Seele Quest: 2.8
This just leaves the corpses, and you don't think you want to deal with them right now. You've had enough of this horrid place for one day.

The two of you head back out of the reactor, and you should be heading back to Tesla, but... You just lean against the wall, sliding down to the ground and curling up, trying not to think.

Vel sits down next to you, putting an arm around your shoulder. She doesn't say anything, but you can definitely feel her concern.

"I'm glad I've got you here," you tell her. She smiles.

"So am I," she replies softly.

Vel is the only person you completely trust. Her and Bronya, of course Bronya, but Bronya's not here right now and you're not sure when you'll see her again. You lean into Vel, and she hugs you tightly, letting you cry into her shoulder.

"It's OK," she whispers to you. "You did good. We all did good. We're alive, aren't we? We'll all make it out of this."

You've made friends with most of the other valkyries. They even seem to respect you, but Vel is the only one you trust. Vel is the only one who really understands what you're going through. Vel is the only one you'd trust with your life.

Vel is also a demon from beyond the stars, sent here to consume your world and others.

...maybe.

Truthfully, you never made your mind up about that. There's been enough madness that you almost think a superpowered evil side is *required* for all valkyries, but Velonia isn't... well, she isn't evil. She's snarky, and protective to a fault, and awkward, and sometimes a living nightmare to anyone you'd describe as an enemy, but she's not... well, she's not all that demonic.

You've seen the way she acts around monsters, and how the monsters react to her. The way her eyes glow when she's angry. The way she can make herself seem more monstrous, all sharp teeth and red eyes and tentacles of blackest night. The way she can make you feel fear, and pain, just by looking at you.

You've seen all of that, but you've also seen her kindness. She supported you at the lowest point of your life, after Bronya sacrificed herself for you. She's making sure you're safe even now, as she holds you in her arms. Mei called her a 'tsundere' when you described her, but she's not...

Vel is a lot of things, but maybe... just maybe... she isn't what you thought she was.

Well, but...

Mei wasn't wrong.

Mei never is wrong.

You've seen what Vel has done to people. She tortured Sin for hurting Bronya, making you feel sad, and she's hardly ever *nice*. Even when she helps you, it's more paternalistic than sisterly. It's only lately, only since you woke up in the dream, that she's been more...

Human?

Is that the word you're looking for?

Vel isn't human. She introduced herself as something else, and so she can't be. Right?

You sigh, leaning into her warmth. Her arms wrap around you, and you feel a faint wetness in your hair.

"Vel..." You murmur. "I want to trust you... I really do."

You reach up, touching her face. Her eyes widen, then she lets out a content sigh as you gently touch her cheek.

Vel, answer me... please. Tell me the truth.

She doesn't, of course. She doesn't read your mind.

You sigh, lying against her as you stare up at the ceiling. The engineering space is brighter now, the big arc-lamps in the ceiling flickering to life one at a time. You hear heavy thuds, off in the distance; you think that's the other reactors firing up. It's that sort of sound. Tesla's giant science experiment in the centre of the room isn't doing much, but you see a few lights flickering on and off, every now and then.

The dull metal walls around you are clean, but a light patina of dust lays undisturbed. The floors are swept clean of any cobwebs or dust, though, and there's a general sense of being well-used. Of course there is. The Hyperion is... how many years old, now?

You're not sure that question has a proper answer anymore. Not for you, and not for the ship.

Sighing, you sit up and lean against the cold metal wall. You can feel the faint thrum of the ship's engines through it, a kind of percussive pounding that's transmitted through into your shoulderblades. On, and off, and on again. You aren't going anywhere -- there's nowhere to go -- but Tesla must be testing the engines. Or maybe the captain is, if she has contact with the bridge. You wonder who's acting as captain now, exactly, but...

It's not very important.

"Let's get back to Tesla," you tell Vel. You let out a long sigh. You don't move, though. You just stay there, slumped against the wall. "We need to see if we can help her fix this..." You wave upwards. "If we do that, then maybe things'll go back to... normal, I guess?"

You laugh at yourself. Of course, you find the situation to be a bit funny. It's so absurd! You should be doing something about it. You let out a groan as you push yourself up to stand.

"What's so funny?" Vel asks, curious.

"Nothing," you say, shaking your head. "Just the situation we're in. Come on..."

You head back to Tesla, with Veliona trailing behind you.

ooOOoo

"Oh, you're back," the red-haired woman says as you enter the room. "I need to calibrate this thing." She points to a large machine, with a large metal disk that seems to be struggling to contain a blue ball of energy. "Hold this thing still, would you?"

"Uh..." You look at the metal disk, wondering if you should touch it. The woman notices your discomfort.

"It's perfectly safe," she says. "There's a protective field here that will prevent you from getting hurt."

You nod, slowly stepping towards the disk. You place your hands on the mettle, and as promised, nothing happens.

"Okay," she says. "Now just hold still, this might tingle a bit."

You nod once again, and brace yourself. The red-haired woman begins to mess with a few of the dials on the machine, and the blue ball of energy on the disk brightens considerably. It begins to tingle, as you feel a static-like sensation run through your body. You grit your teeth, trying not to move a muscle. You know, somehow, that moving will cause something very bad to happen.

"This might take a while," the woman says, fussing with the machine. "We need to calibrate this just right. Hold still..."

It's five whole minutes before she tells you to let go. You slowly drop your arms to your side, working the feeling back into them.

"That's all?" you ask.

"Yes," she sighs. "That's got the balancer stabilized. We should be good for, oh, three or four days before it burns out now, plenty of time... probably." She draws the word out, and you can tell she doesn't believe her own words.

"Okay," you say. "What now?"

"Now?" She looks around the room, then sits down on a chair. "We wait. I'm going to get some sleep, I've been up for long enough that I'm nearly hallucinating."

She says that authoritatively, with the air of a woman who's done it before. You know, because you've seen her do it. She opens up a leather satchel she's been carrying, pulling out some old, worn blankets and a pillow. She makes herself a bed on the floor, and lies down on it.

"I'll be up in a few hours. Try not to touch anything. You should get some sleep yourself, or if you want to do something useful, you could, I dunno, check what's going on with the rest of the ship. Or with that meteor. Or I dunno. Whatever." Her eyes shut tightly the second she hit the ground, and she's slurring the words. "Turn off the light before yo- hnggn. Before you leave."

While write-ins are always welcome, they're extra welcome here. You can pick more than one option, but if you decide to go to sleep then I'd like a few ideas for what to do afterwards. Otherwise the next update will be super short; you're not getting another dream adventure. Too easy to get lost.

I want to be clear that, whatever Seele may think, a meteor is specifically a rock that's gone through the atmosphere and gotten burnt to a cinder.

This isn't that, so it's probably an asteroid. Or a comet. Hard to be sure, at this point.

You realize I keep calling this Dead Space because you keep giving me ammo and reason to, right?

(Psychic) meteor, everyone hallucinating, not-dead corpses...

[X] Go looking for others
-[jk] Alright, time to go find the others... huh, its weirdly quiet behind you, also why are you covered in red? ----- Probably not important. Yes, totally not, you should go find the others.

:V

Let's see, where would others bunker down... cafeteria, armory, bridge... survivors will likely be peeking out with the ship's systems coming back on. If there are any.

Also who is Mai? I know a Mei.

[X] Go looking at the meteor

Let's go look at the giant space rock, somehow fitting in one of the Hyperion's engine rooms. Bugging Tesla about the supernatural fire extinguisher right now seems a poor idea, with how exhausted she is.

You know...

"Kiana" has the Herrscher of Void. Bronya has the Herrscher of Reason... um, ish. Mei has the Herrscher of Thunder... and so it goes.

Seele doesn't. Seele may be the only one of these girls whose superpowered evil side isn't actually evil, no matter how demonic Velonia might come off.

Bronya has the Herrscher of Reason... um, ish.
Bronya isn't a Herrscher, Welt passed down his core to her and she uses it. Unless you mean she has the Herrscher of Reason because Welt is actually walking around and talking to people I suppose.

Also define evil. Cause she's hella selfish, but isn't looking to commit genocide or anything like that. Maybe a bit of homicide though.

I guess that's fair. Bronya doesn't have anyone willing to commit genocide stuck in her, and neither does Seele.

...even if only because Seele isn't.

Everyone else though...

I will drag this fandom into proper German usage and not misgendering people kicking and screaming if I have to.

Was the gratuitous German really necessary, English localization team? Really?

"I'll be up in a few hours. Try not to touch anything. You should get some sleep yourself, or if you want to do something useful, you could, I dunno, check what's going on with the rest of the ship. Or with that meteor. Or I dunno. Whatever." Her eyes shut tightly the second she hit the ground, and she's slurring the words. "Turn off the light before yo- hnggn. Before you leave."

She's asleep in seconds.

You turn around, and sure enough, there's a light switch just behind you. You flip it off, plunging the room into darkness. You wait a minute for your eyes to adjust, then start to leave.

A thought crosses your mind. You're not really tired, but the last time you slept was...

The last time you slept was on Yvette's shoulder, hours ago. While you were killing her.

Your stomach clenches, and you feel bile rising up inside of you. You clamp your mouth shut, trying to force it back down. You breathe in, then out, then in again. You're in control. Calm blue, like Yvette's eyes.

You shudder, then crouch down next to the bed. There's enough light to see by flowing in from the doorway, though what light does make it through is dim. There's plenty of light to see Tesla, even without dipping into your more esoteric senses. She's covered in a thin layer of sweat, and she's breathing erratically. Her lips are partially open, and you can see her eyes darting around underneath her eyelids.

She's dreaming. And from the look of it...

It's not a good one.

Her eyes are darting around underneath her eyelids, and they shift into a sort of... Worry. Her eyebrows are furrowed, and she's biting her lip.

You have no idea what she's seeing. All you can see is the fear on her face. You should go look for the others – really, you shouldn't care about the nightmares of a woman you hardly like – but Tesla's mental wellbeing is important, too. At any rate that's what you tell yourself, when you sit down next to her and put one of your hands on her shoulder.

You expect her to wake up then, but she doesn't. She just keeps on breathing erratically and twitching. She's having a nightmare. You look down at her face, then press your hand against her shoulder a little more firmly.

And she still doesn't wake up.

What should you do?

"You should kiss her," Vel says, mischievously. "Isn't that how you love to wake Bronya?"

You ignore Veliona, and go back to worrying about Tesla. You look at her face, at the closed eyes and twitching eyebrows and pursed lips. The expression she's making is one of fear – no, of terror. She's kept it together well enough in front of you, but her mind is trawling through something horrible.

You reach out to her face with your right hand, gently moving a strand of hair out of her eyes. She doesn't react, so you start stroking her head, slowly. Her hair is soft and smooth as silk, but a little cool to the touch. You keep on petting her head for a minute more, before you realize that she's stopped breathing erratically. Her eyes have changed, too. They're less focused on whatever it is that's scaring her.

"Hey..." You say, but she's fast asleep. You stay there a few minutes longer, making sure she's comfortable. She definitely seems more relaxed.

You sigh, then stand up. You know you won't find Bronya here, but it's time you search the rest of the ship. So far it's been painfully empty; Tesla hinted at an explanation when she talked about 'safe zones', but that doesn't explain why she was alone in engineering. It doesn't explain what happened to the four people in reactor #4.

You shake your head. There'll be time to think about it later. Right now, you just want to find your friends.

With no better ideas, you start wandering the ship.

It's an... experience. You find nothing as outré as the dimensionally distorted giant meteor that Tesla was examining, but there's still plenty to see. In fact, the whole ship feels like it's been squished together with half a dozen places that have *no* business existing in a military vessel, or anywhere describable as 'indoors' for that matter. Some of them are, at least, close. You come across large rooms filled with computer banks, large pieces of equipment you don't recognize, and signs proclaiming it to be part of Cambridge university. One room contains a dozen huge glass tubes, filled with nothing but a thick green fluid.

Others are less sensible. A maintenance closet, when you step inside it, opens on a winter forest. A wing of the ship that contains nothing but row upon row of metal stakes, some splattered with dried blood. A room filled with red, black and silver balloons. A hallway that seems to extend deeper than the laws of physics should allow, that you walk down a full minute, but when you turn around you're barely inside it.

It's... unsettling. Not dangerous, but you think you see what Tesla's been doing – the area of the ship she's in is, by far, the most *real*. That's not something you noticed when you entered it, but it's obvious now that you're wandering.

The main corridors were reasonably undamaged. The smaller accessways are– not so much, though you're not sure if you can call this 'battle damage'.

Maybe.

As to your quest of finding people, you haven't found any yet, but you're starting to build a map of the ship. It's in four parts, basically.

There's the cockpit and sensor rooms, all the stuff that's in the front of the ship – you haven't found a safe path there, but you can tell when you wander thataways that things get a little less wonky, although still skewed in some way you can't name. It's a good place to look for some of your friends – Bronya used to spend most of her time on the bridge, acting as gofer, and Kiana's taken that role recently. Theresa would certainly be there.

There's the engineering space, running from the bow to the aft of the ship. It's wrapped around the railgun... well, what used to be the railgun, and which is now Tesla's science experiment. You wonder if it was supposed to be some kind of gun? If it is, it isn't a good one. There's no direct path from there to the bridge section, but in principle you could find your way out through the front and knock on the windscreen. With the ship in the state it is, it's anyone's guess what you'd find there. Engineering is almost entirely intact, so you can treat it as a highway of sorts.

There's the living quarters, training rooms, offices and so on. They're all in the mid-section of the ship, but at least half the ones you've seen are mixed with some fragmentary reality that has no business existing in your home. The main corridors might be okay, but the smaller ones are traps, as dangerous as sticking your hand into a blender. You can cope – really, nothing you've seen could hurt you – but if anyone is still alive in there, they'll certainly need help. You haven't found any corpses yet, and you're not sure if you should be happy about that, or worried.

Then, finally, there's the engine section and hull. The ship has a lot of passageways going right next to the hull, and they're large enough for you to crawl through, but only barely. They're not really meant for people. As for the engines, it's... hard to say, really, what the purpose of going there would be. You can't use engines in the quantum sea, anti-grav or otherwise.

So really, your options are the bridge or the living quarters.

You suppose there's also the outside of the ship. The deck is meant for valkyries to sortie from, or sometimes fight on, and last time you were there there was a helicopter parked, but... that was back when the Hyperion existed in normal space, in a place with an atmosphere. It butts up right against the quantum sea, which might as well be acid – there definitely can't be any survivors. If you go there now, you don't think you'll find the hull of a ship.

Those are your options. Pick one and find your friends.

= = =

You heard her, I guess.

You can of course go searching through one of those – other places – but whatever you find there is less than likely to be anyone you know. If that suits your fancy, you can write in whatever you like – why not visit an infinite library?

The ship is... not too solid right now, as far as being sensical in geometry and physics, it seems.

I mean, I noticed Narnia, but that one was obvious.

Hmmm...

Theresa is, um, sort of in charge of this whole "The-Artists-Formerly-Known-As-The-Shicksal-Far-East-Branch-And-Also-Parts-Of-Anti-Entropy-I-Guess" faction, and thus Seele's boss. We may wish to check in with whatever remains of the chain of command.

Kiana, meanwhile, is ... the most likely person to be ... capable of exploring the ship safely? I should hope so, at least; it'd be nice if being Herrscherin of the Void actually was useful for once for a second time instead of just making her die of tragic anime coughing sickness - and this does seem like the sort of environment where "space-time magic powered by the infinite hatred of the Honkai what dwell within the Sea of Quanta" seems like it ought to be useful. At the very least, I'd expect it to keep her from accidentally walking into, like, bits of mangled space and getting hurt.

And a bonus: if they're both there, we have a quorum, and can call a meeting of the local chapter of the "Walking-Monuments-To-The-Extremely-Poor-Grasp-Of-Experimental-Ethics-Possessed-By-The-Alarmingly-High-Number-Of-Mad-Scientists-In-This-Setting" Club!

Yeah, Kiana can probably walk through the place and bump things back in place where Seele would be tripping over crap left on the ground and cutting holes in the reality to make progress between areas.

Of course everyone else would die basically instantly, so even that's good in comparison.

One wonders what the TSAB would make of this situation.
They'd die basically instantly.

I won't say they couldn't figure it out, but they'd be in the same position as anyone who knows nothing about Honkai would be, because they don't. My interpretation of their universe has dimensional space as equivalent to Brane cosmology, which is to say that imaginary space is equivalent to the depths of the Bulk.

All nice and sensible, if difficult to survive in, but completely disjoint from the quantum-mechanical madness that is the mangled-worlds space of the Sea of Quanta. If I merged the two, then you could, in principle, find shattered shards of any element of TSAB space in here -- anything from imaginary space to, yes, the Infinite Library. Which doesn't mean those places would stop existing otherwise, because that's not how quantum mechanics works. Even the bastard offshoot I'm using still works in that fashion; timelines split up, shatter, and then the fragments merge back to the larger, more solid timelines -- to little (but nonzero) effect on those timelines.

What Tesla has pulled off is getting the Hyperion's timeline to stay intact despite being too low-measure to reasonably exist, at least a small part of it -- the part containing the Hyperion -- and that's a piece of magic that the TSAB couldn't possibly pull off without decades of research. Tesla, of course, had a cheat sheet, but she hasn't quite managed to stop other shattered timelines from conglomerating around this one slightly more intact one, and at this measure the effect no longer rounds down to zero.

Her 'science experiment' is supposed to stop that, but it's not quite working. Not entirely.

A TSAB cruiser, if dumped into the sea of quanta, would cease to exist in a matter of seconds.

Haha, I appreciate the serious answer to my joke at the mention of an infinite library.

Yeah, I didn't really get the impression they could actually survive here. At best it came off to me as the rough equivalent of them trying to dive into Imaginary Space which uh... isn't something I would anticipate them surviving. (I suppose it might be less deadly than the Sea of Quanta appears to be because off the top of my head I forget if Nanoha-verse Imaginary Space was actively harmful to physical matter rather than just being a space where magic can't function so hypothetically while a TSAB cruiser might not be able to escape from Imaginary Space and would face the immediate problem of being stranded without hope of recovery, it might stay physically intact there and a crew could survive for as long as their resources lasted if it was "just" a giant void of anti-magic.)

That seems to be exactly what Imaginary Space is, not that we've seen much of it.

Going back to M-theory, the Bulk is simply... where the universe isn't. It's not inherently dangerous, but if you get there, you're stuck.

I have not grown tired of the quest.

I mention this because there will probably not be any updates for a couple days. Outside circumstances -- I'm heading back to Dublin. Honestly, it's addictive putting out ~1500 word updates every day, even if I'm only writing half of them...

EDIT: Honestly, I'm just travelling, I'm not getting brain surgery.

Seele Quest: 3.1
The bridge, then. It's the safest choice, and as much as you feel you should search for people to rescue, you are, after all, a valkyrie. With Theresa for a commanding officer, courage is always recommended, but not always required. Following orders isn't as optional, and you're pre~tty sure she'd order you to visit if she had any idea you still exist.

You walk through the halls towards the bridge, passing by several empty rooms. It's... quiet. Oddly quiet. The distant clangs and other sounds are gone. There's just you in this part of the ship, not even the hiss of ventilation. The air is probably safe regardless--

"I miss seeing this place alive," Vel says, walking beside you.

She wasn't there a second ago, but you don't miss a beat before replying. "It's empty now. Just us ghosts." You stroll on, not needing to look at her to see the frown on her face. She disapproves of your metaphor, and breaks her silence to tell you so.

"We aren't dead yet," she grumbles.

"When's the last time you ate?" You counter. "Or slept?"

She's quiet for a second longer than you expected, and you turn to face her. Of course, she doesn't have a response.

"You got meaner, Seele," she says, and a slight smile shows on her face. "I'm glad."

You pause, and blush slightly. You turn away with the same smile on your face. She's right. It's been a tough couple of months, but you've gotten much better at dealing with people-- especially her.

"I just don't want to lose anyone else," you say, almost a whisper.

"We won't," she says, her voice confident and soothing. "I promise." She holds out her hand, and you grab it. With the other one, she lifts up your chin so that you're looking at each other.

"Together, then?"

"Together," you say, and you feel a surge of confidence.

The rest of the trip to the bridge isn't eventful. That is, granted, mainly because you're you. Anyone else would have suffocated, or gotten stuck in a geometric flaw, or been fooled by a barely-there illusion of a city, or... or fallen into a hole, on two occasions.

That you actually did fall into one of them is, well, something you're keeping to yourself-- Vel says she doesn't want to know. (Yvette would be disappointed.)

Eventually, you reach your goal. The bridge isn't anything fancy. It's just a giant metal walkway leading across the nothingness to the cockpit.

You pause, staring at it for a second.

"What's up?" Vel asks. She rounds the corner behind you, then stops, blinking.

"It's..." You stare at the bridge, at a loss for words. How do you describe this? "It's like... an idea, but this isn't-- bridges aren't--"

You look around. Behind you, the usual metal hallways of the ship, getting steadily more real as you approached the bridge. A bridge which, you remind yourself, is supposed to be the type with consoles, and monitors, and chairs. Not the type meant for, you guess, bicycles. The empty air stretches on for a hundred feet, and it's only two feet wide. Two feet wide and suspended over nothingness.

It's surreal. It's impossible. It breaks your mind in half, and you have to stare, captivated.

A foot hits the deck behind you, and Vel's voice startles you from behind. "Woah."

"Yeah." You walk on. The bridge stretches onward, taunting you with the impossibility of its concept. It's a quantum bridge, or... something. It's made by someone who has no idea what she's doing. Someone whose best idea for going from A to B was to build a literal bridge. Someone who Vel would call an idiot. Someone like--

"Oh, it's Kiana!" Vel raises her hand, waving. "Kiana, over here!"

You stare at the other girl. She turns, looking at you, and smiles. Her long white hair sits just above her waist, and her armor clings tightly to the curves of her form. The color of honey, she walks forward with a smile on her face.

"Seele! You're alive! I'm so glad to see you!" She gives you a quick hug, and you return it nervously.

"I'm... glad to see you too," you say, stumbling over your words. The hug ends, but she's still smiling. Her long hair drapes down her front, and she runs her fingers through it.

"So..."

Kiana's eyes are yellow.

Well, she's standing in the middle of a half-built... bridge. Putting that aside, she's obviously still Kiana. Her skin is still pale, she's still smiling, and her stance is still confident-- not arrogant. Her eyes are still kind, even if they are... a little different.

"It's great to see you," she says, in Kiana's voice, and if there's a slight resonance to it, you might be imagining it. "And this is?"

She motions to Vel.

= = =

I could have continued, but I really want to see what you'll make of this. By the same token -- I could have provided options, but I didn't. The AI seems to mostly go for "Veliona", which is admittedly true, but I don't think that's what she's asking.

Interestingly, the -- er, the 'bridge' was not my invention, and Seele's reaction to it isn't either. Though I think any reasonable person would react this way.

...Hahahaha, well played AI - this bridge twist got a smile out of me.

My most immediate question to those who would know - is my suspicion this may not be the real Kiana justifiable in any way? Any time the prose starts to dip into less certain diction like "speaks in Kiana's voice" rather than simply, "Kiana says" or something similar I perk up a bit and start getting mighty suspicious of it - even when just prior it asserts "she's obviously still Kiana". Is the apparent fact that she doesn't know Vel and wants an introduction suspicious? I know it's been hinted that Vel is new to having an actual physical form but...
