No real reason, it just appeals to me a bit more.

As a (not so) side benefit hares are also symbols of eternity, believe it or not, especially in groups of three, arranged in a circle. They also have other connections to circles, like the old belief about them going around your house. If you wander out of Europe, a white hare stands on the moon making the elixir of life, the ultimate goal of all alchemy (sort of).
Though, if you're interested in a familiar that would act as foil, rather than enable Lily's laziness and other traits, you could go for something else.
Not to fuffed about appearance, nor family status, really. Just thought I should mention the excellency of the hare.

... Insects are animals. They are part of the animal kingdom, and given turtles, a reptile, hasn't been vetoed, I doubt we're limited to mammals.
