Can Ritsuko feed the position of the shelter to the pilots HUDs so they can see it through the snow? At least so that can keep it out of the direct firing line.

Evacuate, sure. You can try it if you'd like. Bear in mind you'd have to come up with a place for them to go, a means to quickly move a lot of people, and also consider the fact that most of them are not dressed or equipped for this kind of weather.

Its a 50/50 no matter which we choose to do then, I would imagine that the shelter is protected with some sort of armor, and hard points for the people inhabiting it, so barring anything other than a direct hit, it should be fine, so I guess the question comes down to the shelters power, do the shelters have their own power generators or are they all hooked into the larger Geofront grid, or both?

The main concern of course being the weather, temperatures are already bad and only getting worse as they continue to fall, and this shelter is directly exposed to the worst of it, if there is a real danger of the power failing, then I do think we are going to need to get these people out while there is still a chance to do so.

You might be able to use Magi to help assist aim if there's good confirmation on its location.

So theoretically if Unit 2 has a visual confirmation on the Angel location, the Magi can use that data to assist with aiming for Units 0/1?

I've played a lot of Armoured Core VI this week, and right now my response to "big monster" is "fly close, launch missiles, charge it in the back with a laser sword". Live fast, die hard, leave a trail of radioactive wreckage - those are words to explode by :V

I think either way we're getting to the point where we should start working on actual countermeasures to Angels trying mind-fuckery.

Actual thinking time:
[X] Instructions for Rei: Ensure there's not going to be any collateral fire on the stuck shelter. Shoot the Angel so we can observe its response. Distribute shots around the body.
[X] Instructions for Shinji: Make sure the stuck shelter isn't behind the Angel from his firing angle.
[X] Instructions for Asuka: Be ready to intercept the Angel in melee; if she's not already in an optimal intercept position, find one and put her in it.

Not my best work, but covers a few of the bases - though I am quite firm on GreatWyrmGold's idea of probing shot(s), that's hopefully going to get us a more solid idea of what the Angel can do.

I like the plan, but it needs a cool name.

I think this should be doable.
* Unit 02 spots the angel
* MAGI calculates the distance and location from Eva-02
* MAGI calculates relative distance of remaining units, and plots the coordinates on their HUD (like during the fight with Ramiel)

I like the plan, but it needs a cool name.
Somehow, describing it as a "cool" name made me imagine an intern asking for operation names while Misato whinges about the cold, with said whinging being turned into operation names. E.g. Operation I'm Freezing My Tits Off, Operation I Can See My Fucking Breath, or Operation Doesn't The Geofront Have Central Heating.

do the shelters have their own power generators or are they all hooked into the larger Geofront grid, or both?
They're on the Tokyo-3/NERV grid. There are three power systems: the main power, the backup power and the reserve power, each with different priorities. Life support systems for the Geofront are high priority for all three, so short of a complete power failure (unheard of! Except that time it did a few months ago), they won't freeze to death. Probably.

Rei interprets your instructions as putting her on defense duty for the stuck shelter. She quickly takes up position between the Angel and the shelter, ready to deploy her AT-Field to deflect projectiles. Meanwhile, Shinji begins adjusting his position to take a wider angle on the Angel to avoid accidentally piercing the shelter with a concentrated burst of antimatter, and starts charging up a shot, awaiting your orders to fire. You work with Ritsuko to have the relative positions of the Evangelions communicated to one another, as well as the location of the shelter. Annoyingly, the Angel keeps disappearing from view due to the weather conditions, so the exact location of it remains frustratingly elusive, though rough estimates of its general location can be made.

You have Asuka position herself between the Null Zone in the path of its most likely attack vector and tell her to wait for visual confirmation. The Angel emerges from the haze of ice crystals one or two blocks to Asuka's right, but otherwise at the expected time and place. Using the data from Asuka's Unit-02, the exact position of the Angel is fed to Units-00 and -01's targeting systems to assist with aiming. Asuka jumps in front of the Angel and begins the process of cutting through its AT-Field with the naginata. The Angel doesn't resist and keeps trying to push forward against Asuka's AT-Field, walking directly into it as if unaware a barrier has been erected. It's certainly persistent.

Rei attempts supporting fire, which the Angel ignores. Its AT-Field is extremely strong, and the shots are harmlessly deflected into the surrounding blocks. The Angel, being single-minded as it is, does not even seem to register Rei's presence and continues to push against Asuka's field.

As for the JSSDF, you can't think of anything for them to do at the moment, so you tell them to stand by. Fine by them; they don't have much interest in dealing with…whatever this is.

Asuka growls in frustration as she keeps pushing back against the Angel. Neither of them is gaining any ground against the other. Come on, you stupid thing, know when you're beat, Asuka snarls. Finally, Asuka's naginata slips past the Angel's defenses and pierces through its left arm, sending a fountain of blue-green blood onto the snow far below. The tears constantly falling from the Angel's eyes flow onto the weapon and congeal into a frozen mass, clotting the wound and causing the weapon to stick in the Angel's body.

Asuka tugs at it a couple of times before scoffing and breaking the weapon into its two halves, leaving one stuck in the Angel. How do you like that, du Hohlkopf?

The Angel does not like this at all, as it turns out. For the first time since the engagement began, the Angel reacts to the threat in front of it. It starts by letting out its wretched, melancholic groan. Then it begins to uncover its face. Rei's heartrate spikes and she begins firing wildly in the Angel's direction, with most shots again bouncing off the AT-Field, which Asuka was not able to fully dissipate, though a few find their mark, leaving ragged wounds in its back which ooze the same poisonous-looking blood.

Its three arms slowly slide off the spikes jutting out from its face with an audible squelch. Bizarrely, as the hands slide away from the bases of the spikes, the spikes slowly vanish as they pass through the holes in the Angel's hands, jutting out only from the back of the hands, but not the palms, until they're gone altogether. It savagely backhands Unit-02, catching Asuka by surprise and causing the red Evangelion to stumble backwards. The fog of snow and ice suddenly dissipates, replaced only by quiet snowfall. The wind has abated entirely, making sure everyone gets a good look at its face.

Roll 4d100.

...Yeah, I think this is a roll-under system.

Welp, it was nice not having our minds melted by gazing upon Things That Should Not Be, but I'm still ready to embrace our new exciting future as a cautionary tale!

For some reason, my mind jumped straight to "...because of the car alarms that get set off whenever one of its frozen tears hit an automobile". Would that even set off a car alarm?

Oh. The Angel is barely reacting to the mechs attacking it. This is bad vibes.

Oh, this is very bad vibes.

I do not like these vibes at all.

I'm fearless.

[The die roll thingy doesn't get quoted, but it was 332/400, in a roll-under system]
The vibes can't keep getting worse forever, right?

Actually, now that the angels have seen it's not ADAM in terminal dogma, does anyone think that will have changed their behavior? This is the first one since right?

You look upon the face of the Angel to see…
not much. The Angel's face is unsettlingly devoid of features, except for three large, circular holes, two where its eyes would be, and one in the center of its forehead. The edges of the holes are ragged, as if bored into the Angel's head by a giant awl, and they leak bluish fluid and some kind of dark-colored gore. Its skin is the same smooth dark gray surface as the rest of its body. You find the sight nauseating, but you keep it together.

The rest of the bridge is not so lucky. A number of technicians on the bridge freeze up. One of them begins to have what looks like a seizure, collapsing from his chair and twitching on the floor like a fly in its death throes. Not everyone is affected. Aoba gets up from his chair and shouts for medical support. When his call goes unanswered, he orders one of the technicians under him to contact the medical wing immediately and goes to render first aid. You scan the room quickly. About a third of the bridge staff has frozen in place, some slumping in their chairs.

You turn around and look up at the Commander's chair. Gendo is sitting impassively with his hands folded in front of him. His sunglasses make it hard to tell whether he's also been affected by…whatever this thing is, but he moves and raises his hand, before handing down a series of orders to fill the logistical gaps as much as possible and assigning people to help medical staff now arriving in the room. He orders the main monitor switch to the three Entry Plugs' internal cameras, and for any images of the Angel to not be shown on the screen until Ritsuko or the Magi can figure out what's going on. To Gendo's right, Fuyutsuki has frozen in place, staring at the screen with wide eyes. Gendo seems indifferent to his colleague.

To your alarm, Ritsuko has also stopped responding to stimuli, merely standing in place. The camera switches to the three pilots. All of them appear to be aware of their surroundings, though each wears a look of horror and disgust at what they're seeing. Still, you feel relief as the three of them turn in their seats to check their surroundings. Asuka is the first to say anything: "Ugh." She pulls herself up from the ground as the Angel trundles past her at an appreciably faster clip than before.

You snap your fingers in front of Ritsuko's face and shake her, which finally elicits a response. She snaps out of it, though she's clearly distraught. After a moment of disorientation, Ritsuko says that it is imperative that the Angel be destroyed as quickly as possible. The other bridge staff begin to recover, but some of them are in such states of distress that they are unable to perform their duties. You demand information on the situation.

Aoba says that Casper and Melchior have locked up. Analysis of the situation has caused logic errors in their software. Fortunately, Balthasar is still operational and conjectures that the Angel is exerting a moderate psychological effect caused by looking at its face. It appears that some people are more resistant to it than others. Resilience factors remain to be analyzed. Effects of prolonged exposure to the effect remain unknown. Magi recommend all personnel affected in this manner be removed from direct involvement with this engagement.

Everyone turns to look at Gendo. Gendo raises his hand and says that anyone who wishes is free to leave. There will be no negative consequences. Those who wish to remain, may. Some of your staff shuffle out, leaving your already understaffed bridge even more understaffed. The ability to regulate the Evangelions' operations may be impaired. Resupply or weapons exchange may be slower. Data collection and analysis will take longer.

Notably, Ritsuko and Fuyutsuki remain on the bridge. Fuyutsuki seems to have mostly recovered, though shaken. He turns away from the screen, but he remains next to Gendo. Ritsuko looks worse for wear, clearly not fully recovered. She barks for someone to bring her a laptop so she can begin debugging the two frozen Magi. She begins furiously typing away.

You get word that the JSSDF suffered from a similar incident as NERV. They are attending to the situation in more or less the same way, though some soldiers have been ordered to retreat. You get the sense they aren't telling you everything.

MOVEMENT II

The Angel is moving towards the Null Zone quickly. What now?

[ ] Instructions for the JSSDF (write-in):

You're concerned about Ritsuko's mental state. However, with so much of your staff depleted, you're sure that she's going to be your last line of defense when it comes to technical support for the Evangelions and the Magi. She's probably the only person who can fix the two supercomputers on the bridge right now.

There's still been no sign of Ibuki or Hyuga, presumably unable to reach the Geofront under these weather conditions. You hope they're okay.

[ ] Let Ritsuko do her job. You need all the support you can get under these adverse conditions.
[ ] Use your authority to order her off the bridge. You don't know if she's all there.

I might have been willing to accept one of the pilots failing if Gendo also failed. He deserves to be floored in front of his subordinates.

Aoba says that Casper and Melchior have locked up. Analysis of the situation has caused logic errors in their software.
The Angel made our computers lose SAN points?

This choice seems easy. Ritsuko doesn't want to leave, she's doing something important, we have no substitute.

The pilots...I dunno. Should we continue Operation Cool Name?
