[X] Follow him surreptitiously. You're curious as to what he's doing, and honestly? You'd also like to know what's down there. You want some answers.
You follow him quietly down the corridor, slipping out of sight whenever he checks his rear for tails. He takes a route you're only vaguely familiar with, down into the bowels of NERV. The lower parts of NERV are convoluted and poorly lit. You feel like you're descending less into a secure bunker and more into the belly of a strange mechanical monster.
You feel cold and clammy as the darkness grows. Your surroundings remind you of that day fifteen years ago. Your chest feels tight. Still, Kaji continues down into the dark without slowing down. He walks with purpose. He knows exactly where he is going. You see lighted signs for facilities you know little about.
SECOND APOPTOSIS CHAMBER, BOLGIA 7 DEFENSE PERIMETER MACHINE ROOM, DURA-BAKELITE STORAGE TANKS, TYPHON MONITORING STATION. You follow him down a long escalator to the very bottom of NERV.
A sign on the wall, stenciled in chipped maroon paint, reads simply, "Terminal Dogma". Kaji hurries past it, ignoring a brightly lit sign whose text is eerily familiar to you.
KEEP OUT
MAIN L.C.L. PLANT: CIRCULATION LINE NO. 3
TRESSPASSERS WILL BE SHOT ON SIGHT.
VIOLATORS WILL BE LIABLE FOR PENALTIES OF UP 10 YEARS' IMPRISONMENT, $100,000 FINE, OR BOTH.
Kaji must have a death wish, you think to yourself. You hear a faint beeping sound echoing from the far end of the hall, where Kaji is fiddling with a keypad set into an enormous vault door. You shake your head. Kaji isn't a UN Inspector at all. You'd long suspected it, given how cagey he's been about his choice of meeting place with you. Obtaining and auditing documents on the finances and personnel of NERV and the Marduk Institute is one thing. You could buy that sure, maybe he had access to that sort of thing, or had a way of pressuring NERV personnel into giving it to him. But this is clearly espionage. Probably for the Japanese government.
You pull out your service weapon and point it at the back of Kaji's head. He doesn't even flinch. How's Shinji? You tersely say he's fine. You ask if illegally sneaking into ultrasecure NERV facilities is part of his job description, and if so, which job? His job for the United Nations or the one for the Japanese Department of Home Affairs? Kaji asks which one you
think it is dismissively and starts rummaging through his pockets to remove a small key card. Does Commander Ikari have you running counterintelligence operations for him now in addition to babysitting his kids? He must really be shorthanded.
You retort that you came down here of your own accord. Oh good, then he doesn't know you're down here. That's useful. You say you're going to let him off with a warning. But if he keeps this up, he won't live long. You're fuzzy on the specifics, but NERV Intelligence does not seem like it's above making people "disappear". Kaji says Ikari has been using him to run a few errands for him here and there, so he's feeling optimistic about his prospects for the time being. He's sorry for not telling you about this, of course, but you know, a man's got to keep some secrets.
Speaking of secrets, do you want to see one of Ritsuko's and Ikari's? Before you can react, he slides the key card through the reader. It lets out a tired-sounding beep. Deep within the gigantic steel door in front of you, you hear a low groaning sound and the clunk of machinery. The door opens painfully slowly, revealing…something inside a vast underground chamber.
It takes you a moment to figure out what you're even looking at. There's an enormous blood red cross on the far side of the cavernous room the size of a skyscraper. Its base recedes into a purplish haze filling the room. But on the cross...a great white monster.
The creature is shaped like a human figure. The creature is missing the lower half of its body. The creature's hands are pierced by great nails. The creature's flesh is white and rubbery. The flesh hangs loosely from its chin and arms. The creature's head has several tubes protruding from its back. The creature is wearing a pitted dark purple mask. The mask has seven eyes. The lower half of the creature's torso is composed of a cluster of large, pale tumorous growths from which several pairs of white human legs protrude at strange angles. The creature's heart is pierced by an enormous red bident. A fine cascade of orange blood—LCL—runs down the front of the cross and into huge pools below. The creature is—
Adam, says Kaji, how big he has grown. Your throat closes up. You can't seem to breathe in enough oxygen. You hear the screams of the scientists. You feel the frigid air of the Antarctic rake across your face. The stench of blood fills the air. The ground shakes beneath your feet. You see the giant of light.
You snap back to reality. The only thing you can say is how it can't be possible that that
thing is here. The killer of billions is being kept alive in NERV Headquarters. You thought it was destroyed in the Second Impact. But it's here, right in front of you. At first, you're not sure if it's alive, because it is unnaturally still, but in distance, you hear a whistling wind that echoes around the chamber. It is breathing. Your suspicions are further confirmed when one of its "legs" twitches.
A feeling of intense rage, disgust and confusion fills you. Wasn't NERV's mission to
destroy the Angels? Why is the First Angel here, the slayer of half of mankind, alive? Why has nobody told you this?
Kaji says this is the key to everything since the Second Impact. The starting point of all of your misfortunes. It is indeed Adam, the First Angel. The Commander, Fuyutsuki and Ritsuko have been keeping this from you. He knew of it, because Ikari asked him to deliver the embryonic specimen of Adam here. It is how Kaji ingratiated himself with the Commander, and why he's been allowed to stay in Tokyo-3. It's the price he had to pay to have the opportunity to get closer to the truth. That's what he had with him during your fight with the Sixth Angel. Kaji whistles. He wasn't expecting it to have grown to such a massive bulk in such a short period, though.
You're unable to speak.
Kaji thinks that the evidence that NERV is up to something sinister speaks for itself here, don't you think? He wanted to tell you because he wanted to warn you, because you deserve to know. You deserve better. You clench your fists and look him in the eyes.
He's right. You don't know NERV at all. And you're going to get to the bottom of it, and make sure this
thing is disposed of. Kaji grins at you, the way he used to when you were together. The way he always did when the two of you were going to get up to no good. You feel your face grow hot, but you repress the feelings. Now isn't the time for this.
Kaji says for now the best thing is to carry on as if nothing has happened. Focus on killing the Angels for now. He'll continue digging. You tell him not to do anything stupid. He says where's the fun in that.
Taking Shinji Home
You pick up Shinji from the hospital wing and drive home. He's apparently completely fine, and while shaken from the earlier events of the day, doesn't seem to remember much of what happened that well, beyond that it was something bad and that it hurt him. He says it feels more like a bad dream than something that really happened to him. Which is probably for the best. Still, you can tell he's feeling pretty down about it. He did just promise himself to be a better Evangelion pilot, so getting injured the literal next time he sat in the cockpit of one probably hurt his confidence a bit.
He looks out the window of your car in a very Reilike manner, with his hand pressed to his cheek. You resolve to do something nice for him. You never did have a welcome home from the hospital party for the poor kid, did you? Maybe you can do that. You want to try to be there more for your charges. And you need something to distract yourself from what you've just seen. You crave normalcy.
