The One who Strangles Concepts to death
- Location
- Interwebs
Starship Trooper Reading: 92 + 15 (Prodigy) + 15 (Potential) = 123 Artificial Crit
"Father, I have a question," you stop in the middle of the next sentence. You were just at the part where the main characters are surrounded by the Bugs in that fortress, one of the most tense parts of the book, why did she want to stop now?
"Yes honey? What is it?" you put a bookmark on the page that you're on and close the book, as you look over at your daughter.
"The situation those humans are in. It is a rather hopeless situation, correct?"
"That is true, yes."
"They are metaphorically backed against the wall. Their enemies are all around them blocking off every standard method of escape. They don't have enough resources or overall ways to come out of this with what could be called a victory. They are very unlikely to get any type of reinforcement, and have at the very least a 90% chance of total annihilation."
"That is a rather...objective way of looking at it, but yes that is in fact the current situation," it is slightly unsettling how she's able to say these things with such a matter of fact voice. Though you suppose it is all matter of fact to her. She is an Eldritch Horror after all.
"The logical choice here would be to put down their weapons and wait for death. Yet instead, they choose to use what little resources have left to try to survive when they most likely won't. Why?"
You raise your eyebrow at the little girl at your side, "Why...what exactly?"
"Why would they choose that?" you see her squint her eyes, deep in thought on this subject matter, "It's one of the many things I never understood about humans. Why is it that they continue to fight on even when it's obvious that they can't win? You see it everywhere in human myths and otherwise, but there it makes sense. They're myths. They're not supposed to be realistic.
By now Anastasia has started pacing around the room, her hand under her chin and face folded into a frown. To be honest, it looks kind of cute, "But yet, according to my memories, there have been plenty of times when the truth matches the fiction to the letter. Why is that? What could drive an insignificant organism to fight for its own life to such a degree?!"
"Maybe it's because, we're stupid."
Anastasia stops in the middle of the room. She turns to look at you, her expression showing off a rather large amount of interest, "Excuse me?"
"I said maybe it's because we're a bunch of stupid organisms, who don't know when to give up."
"I know what you said," she replies sitting down next to you again, "it's just surprising to hear one insult one's own race that easily."
You smile as you rub the little girl's head, even though she does use her powers to lift your hand off after a time, "It's not an insult. It's the truth. We humans are exceedingly stubborn, to a self-destructive point where we are willing to fight tooth and nail for what we want.
You pick up the Starship Troopers book and slowly rub your hand along the cover, "We're the type of species to look death in the face and tell it to go sit in the corner, we have worked to do. When the universe tells us to die, we tell the universe to go jump in a river somewhere. Even if we're gonna die, we're gonna make sure that the enemy leaves as bloody and broken as we are. It's what makes us human. And it's this drive, this Will to Live, that writers want to capture in the stories they tell. I guess, you could say that we're just too stubborn for our own good sometimes."
You blink slightly and look back down at Anastasia. You have no idea where that came from. It's like the words just flew out of your mouth the minute you started saying them. Though it appears to have an effect on your daughter, as she's staring at you with a wide eyed grin on her face,"That...is one of the most foolish things I have ever heard."
You feel slightly hurt at that, "Well...maybe it's a bit optimistic, but—" you're interrupted by a small child bowling you over onto your back. You look up and Anastasia seems a bit, brighter to say the least.
It's like when you see one of those kids on TV hear that they get to eat ice cream everyday for an entire week, "It's the perfect answer! That's why humans fight even when they know it's hopeless! Their Will to Live! Thank you, father! You've just answered a question that has been burning in my head for years now!"
At that she gets up and bolts off into your bedroom.
….Guess you'll read the rest of the book tomorrow.
(Anastasia Perk Gained: Human's Will to Live! (Beginner): Howard New Perk Gained: Orator (Beginner)!)
Spending Time with Anastasia: 1 = Crit Fail; Trust Roll: 45 = Success
What...happened?
You sit on the edge of your bed, head in your hands.
What the heck happened?
You don't really remember much from after Anastasia ran off into your room.
All you know is that something terrible took place between you and Anastasia.
But what was it?
Lifting your head up, you try your best to recollect what happened a couple of minutes of go. A task which turns out to be much harder than it sounds.
You remember...something starting to smell like sulfur. Then you walked into your room and saw your daughter...performing a...ritual you think? It was rather haphazard and clumsily made, but that's definitely what you saw in your room.
You...got mad….really mad…..and then you started yelling. You're pretty sure she got angry, said something about "researching". You were having none of it, and then you….disturbed the ritual.
You think you scuffed the chalk circle (which was glowing green at that point) with your foot and then it...exploded. You felt….something….something…..escape from the room, and you heard it...laugh or something. The last thing you remember was a massive blast of force that threw you into the wall. Then you blacked out.
You see Anastasia walk by your room and call to her. She responds by looking at you with something that approaches disdain and disappointment, before she continues to walk into the living room.
You're not sure what it is, but you don't think she's going to forget this anytime soon. On top of that, you think you may have brought some unwanted attention onto yourself.
Just peachy.
(Trust and Satiety Decreased! Howard's Notoriety Increased! Gain Perk: A Divide between Father and Daughter!)
Making Friends: 33 = Fail
You're a bit too focused on trying to mend bridges with Anastasia to focus on making some new friends right now, so you forgo the trip outside. Especially in this rain.
(No Progress Made)
Read the Journal: 64 = Success
Once I discovered the truth about my sudden child and those that hunted them, I went in search of a way to defend myself. My search brought me to discover the thing that we humans seem to covet the most, yet squander when we finally obtain it;
Magic.
The ancient powers with which men can move mountains and turn rock into metal, I began my search for it. It drove me to the darkest, most well hidden places in the world, but I was determined and desperate. Libraries filled with tomes, powerful words that could rend bodies apart, and more were soon made known to me.
However, power is never something that is freely given.
I was no exception.
For in order to obtain the power that I so desired, I found that I must —
Something must of happened to this book a long time ago, because this part of the page is almost completely covered in some kind of rot. It smells horrid, and whenever you touch it, it pulsates slightly.
You decide to leave it alone for now, in case you end up catching a disease or something.
Still, this is a rather amazing discovery.
Magic actually exist!
Boy would that be something to have!
Too bad the last half of the page is covered in...whatever that stuff is.
Hmm, maybe Anastasia could tell you something about it. If you can get her to stop being mad at you.
(You discovered that Magic Exist! New Action Available!)
Practice Powers: 84 - 15 = 67 = Success
Even though she said she had it under control, you wanted to have a little peace of mind about her powers. You look over from the sofa in the living room where you've been reading the Journal. Anastasia, using one of your old shirts as a sort of nightgown as it is bigger than her body, is currently in the kitchen fixing herself another bowl of warm milk. Strangely enough, that seems to be the only thing she drinks and eats.
Yes, eats. You have never once seen her eat anything else in the house.
Rather than come over to the sofa, she sits down on the table and starts to drink. Feeling a tiny bit hurt, you clear your throat and attempt a conversation starter, "Um, honey?"
She stops mid-swallow and appears to wait for you to finish, "Do you think you could...maybe show me a more focused demonstration of your powers? Just so I can get a clear idea of what they are."
She stays silent for a moment, then finishes her current slurp before setting the bowl down, "Well, you would have been able to see more of them, if someone didn't interrupt my testing last night, and cause an Eldritch Horror to escape from the Ritual Circle!" Her tone doesn't hold any malice to it, but she gets the feeling across all the same.
You suddenly start to feel very small and vulnerable in front of the adopted child. Still, you latch onto the last thing she said, "Wait….I accidentally let an—"
"Oh don't worry so much," she waves her hand dismissively while finishing her...breakfast you guess you would call it? "It was a very weak one. Probably at the level of one of those 'Shadow Creatures' that got into the house last time. I can take care of it if and when I feel like it."
"But, shouldn't we stop it before it can hurt anyone?"
She chuckles deeply, and lifts up a slender finger, "First, it's not we. It's me. You would probably get torn to shreds within seconds of meeting the creature. And that's including the very unlikely chance that you can dodge its first blow!
And second…" her raised finger comes down, and you smell sulfur again as the air in the room grows cold. Outside, you hear three thumps against the window to your right. You look out that way, and gasp as you see three birds smashed against the glass. There aren't any cracks, but you see blood splattered where their necks snapped upon impact. You vaguely note that the rain has cleared up as the bodies slump into the grass, "I am very confident in my abilities."
You gulp audibly and leave the conversation at that.
(Anastasia has a good grip on her powers!)
Anastasia Reading: 94 + 15 (Prodigy) +15 (Potential) = 124 Artificial Crit
"Oh, yes. Also, while you were reading that book," at the mention her voice seems to take on an acrid tone, "I was looking through one of the other Sci-Fi books you bought. Which one was it?" she starts to tap her finger up against her chin. Then she snaps her fingers, "Oh yes! Warhammer, that was it!
I must say, those 'Chaos Gods' are rather interesting! Beings manifested out of Mankind's' worst vices and greatest virtues! I am especially interested in that Khorne fellow! Though his methods are rather...brutal, they are very effective. It got me thinking, what if I could use my own powers to strengthen my own form's physical prowess? The result?"
At that she grabs the table, and lifts it higher than you ever could using only one finger. She then starts to twirl it like a pro-basketball player would, without any strain evident on her face, "Outstanding isn't it? Now," she puts the table down with a soft thud, "I believe it is about time to start the day. Wouldn't you agree?"
Before you can get a word in edgewise, she saunters off down the hallway to your room, no doubt to get her clothes that you bought for her.
….Well, guess you'll wait for her to finish.

Sorry it took so long guys.
I've been trying to enjoy the New Year, Christmas, play FFXV, play Samurai Warriors 4: Empires, do Exalted for my brothers, and keep track of my College Classes as they just started back.
That and I was having trouble spinning the Crit Fail you guys rolled, so sorry if that seems kind of subpar.
For those of you still interested, here's the new update, and I hope you enjoy it.
As always, I shall do my best to answer questions and respond to criticism.
