WELL THEN IT"S A GOOD THING THAT MAIKO CAN HELP HIM ANSWER ALL THOSE QUESTIONS HUH WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE START TALKING NERDS

Also not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but upon going back to the first post I noticed that Yui's brother already had a crush on someone who sounds suspiciously like Maiko, though he never was able to get her to notice him because he doesn't seem to have been able to beat her test scores.

I think about three or four new readers have noticed that independently, and if memory serves me I pointed it out myself the first time someone speculated that they'd be a good match.

Initially, I stuck that line in as an open-ended plot hook for future romcom shenanigans involving Kaoru, and to establish that if nothing else Maiko is definitely his type. Over time I drifted toward the "yeah, he actually was talking about Maiko" side and at this point I guess I might as well confirm it? Maybe I already did? Dunno. Theoretically I could still change my mind, but I can't imagine why. That said, Yui has no particular reason to recall the specifics of that conversation or make the connection herself.

Also, uh, for what it's worth Kaoru is kind of socially oblivious. Maiko most certainly did notice him, or was at least very aware of his existence, for reasons that should be obvious if you step outside the perspective of someone who is not only his sister but not even attracted to guys. That said, Maiko had other things on her mind at the time (drifting away from her family toward the full-time meguca life, taking on more of a mentoring/leadership role in Momoko's group) and didn't really think about him except in passing, so given that Aikawa is not a super-unusual name she'd have no reason to both 1) remember him now and 2) realize that he might be related to Yui.

  • [x] You can work with this - you've mostly been coming up with broad strokes plans and having other people pick apart the issues up till now anyway, so with Konno's help you should definitely be able to come up with something.
-[x] You're willing to let the lot of them move into Nagamioka as long as they acknowledge you as boss and follow your rules- you should really type them up or something, but it's nothing too crazy.
--[x] Basically, right now you're in the weird spot of wanting more magical girls to recruit, not less. Unless there're really compelling reasons why you shouldn't, you'd prefer to just recruit all of them.
---[x] Worst case, you could just shuffle any feuding members into separate sections of Nagamioka, as long as things break down in a... non-murdery kind of way.
[x] You've already gone out of your way to make special arrangements for prickly individuals, so would something like that be necessary or appropriate for anyone?
-[x] You could demonstrate your power as a show of force while witch hunting, to satisfy Tamazaki, and anyone else who'd be convinced with that approach.
-[x] Chizuka's issues seem to revolve around feeling like a burden. With a whole city's worth of problems, there should be a lot of situations where her level of firepower is very useful, instead of wasteful. You'd need to make sure you aren't exploiting her, though.
-[x] Miyu's dependence on Honoka is an issue, given Honoka's close ties to Ikue and Ikue's personality. What does Konno know about Ikue's personality - is there a way to disentangle this by taking to Ikue and approaching from that angle?
-[x] Konno's powers in particular would be very useful - knowing your own weaknesses would be fantastic for shoring them up, and you've got a lot of information coming in that she could help examine.
[x] Would Konno be able to make Furuhata agree to something like this? What are the issues she sees with the approach?
[X] Insist on talking with Honoka Furuhata. Tell Konno to push whatever buttons needed to make Furuhata initiate the meeting, then hope you can manage to convince her to actually communicate.
    [X] team red
[X] Ask her to use her magic
    - [X] Offer a Grief Seed as payment
    - [X] Let her set a price, within reason
    - [X] What weaknesses do you see in me? This can be in my magic, my social skills, anything psychological, whatever you can see.
-- [X] Maybe consult Maiko on whether this is a good idea first?
-- [X] Ask Konno to tell us through brainmail?
[X] Hey Konno, what odds would your power give on me sitting everyone involved down and going through the likely shatterpoints of the team presented as my own idea backed as clairvoyance magic - Ikue and Miyu, Ikue and the recent solo hire, Chizuru and the two trying to get her to do a run on a ridiculous creature such as myself? Like, is there any chance at all that getting everything out in the open with a generous helping of grief seeds would let the healing begin?

I will note the primary purpose of that ship for me is seeing his reaction to his little sister recommending him the girl he has a crush on.

Its pure awkward and Yui will do it with a pure, radiant, helpful smile.

Fukka creates/controls small bladed weapons she can remote detonate. Is highstrung and serios

Kiyomi wields a meteor hammer and can block/create visible light. Ditzy and carefree

Fuuka can create barriers and create autonomous enemy seeking projectiles. These projectiles are energy intensive but strong so she avoid using them. Extremely lazy
That top one should be Fuuka and the bottom one should be Rio.

Right, Kaoru said "I never got her to notice me because I couldn't ever beat her grades." That... uh, is not how most people get their romantic partners to notice them. I suspected he couldn't get her to notice him because he never really tried, betting on his stupid grade plan, but it's interesting to hear that she noticed and he just didn't notice her noticing.

And the reason that Maiko 'did better in high school than middle school,' having come second place on a couple exams in the anterior, is because he actually managed to beat her on a test or two, even though she was cheating with magic!

It all makes sense! Also I can't find any citations because apparently the SV search engine doesn't understand the meaning of finding an exact quotation ugh. As such, I will now steadfastly refuse to believe any evidence to the contrary that may be subsequently brought to my attention.

The greater point is that his visit is going to be boatloads of fun in all sorts of interesting ways!

....if the Quest makes it there, but since it's been revived there's hope!

Yeah, there is basically nothing about that entire scenario that isn't going to be very, very awkward. Neither Kaoru or Maiko are good with social situations outside their comfort zones and a situation like "anything involving romance" isn't even in the same postal code. :V

To be clear, we are talking about a young man who is:
  • Legitimately an actual genius
  • Physically attractive, of the "basically an anime pretty boy come to life" variety
  • The eldest child of the only child of one of the wealthiest men in Japan
  • Genuinely nice to people, no matter who they are, at least on the rare occasions that he interacts with anyone
  • Seemingly aloof and distant... mostly because of being an awkward introvert but basically nobody at school realized that
Maiko noticed him. Everyone noticed him. Literally the only person in the entire school who ever once thought Kaoru was not-noticeable was Kaoru himself.

And the reason that Maiko 'did better in high school than middle school,' having come second place on a couple exams, is because he actually managed to beat her on a test or two, even though she was cheating with magic!

Maiko does have a competitive streak when it comes to academics and that would probably be about when she got the hang of the whole "not sleeping" thing, so maybe?

On the other hand it's not like there wasn't any other academic competition for the two of them. It's a fairly large school.

The greater point is that his visit is going to be boatloads of fun in all sorts of interesting ways!

I mean, strictly speaking, you could hop on a train and go visit Kaoru yourself. On the mundane side of things you wouldn't even need much of an excuse to do so beyond "I felt like it". Making it an "official" outing as a territory holder and taking Maiko with would be more complicated and she'd immediately shoot down the idea until such a point as Nagamioka is secure and reasonably self-sufficient enough to basically leave someone else in charge for most of a day.

"I want to go visit my brother, but I can't leave Nagamioka right now, sigh! If only... wait! Maiko! You can go in my place as a surrogate Kaoru's-little-sister!"

No wonder his sister has a complex.

I guess she'll just have to settle for being God-Empress of Japan.

I feel that's the only way for us to fulfill that Completely Meaningless Goal of befriending Mami before the first anniversary of her falling out with Kyouko.
Yui got too much on her plate stabilizing Nagamioka and pacifying its immediate neighbors to think "hey, there was some friendly meguca far away to the south. Need to check on her!"

Meanwhile, if Yui does visit Kaoru's university, it would be reasonable for her to check local meguca situation, just to ensure there is no some evil cabal of Familiar-farmers or some big meguca war brewing that can endanger our dear big brother.
And, well, Mitakihara is right next door to Kaoru's university.

First quest I read while lurking, seeing it back made me break down and make an account. So glad it's back.

And Redshirt Army seems to have the right of it so:

[x] Redshirt Army

Also, as a side note; seeing how we're in the southwest, would it be worth jumping on top of a building and using our magic sense to look for caligraphyguca after the conversation with Konno?

Did Kaoru not ever get stacks of valentine chocolate?

Did Kaoru not ever get stacks of valentine chocolate?
"Oh, I couldn't possibly! Such an educated and refined palate would only sneer at what I call chocolate!"

Or possibly,

"Please place your chocolates on the table according to the number you received! I, his adorable - if chocolate-starved - sister Yui, will ensure that they reach my brother in a prompt and orderly fashion! After you have deposited your chocolate, please accept the form letter for your contributions at the table where Natsuki-chan is sitting! Please keep the line moving, we have a lot of chocolates to get through today! Thank you!"

Kaoru only wonders why Yui and Natsuki come down sick each week following a Valentines day.

"I want to go visit my brother, but I can't leave Nagamioka right now, sigh! If only... wait! Maiko! You can go in my place as a surrogate Kaoru's-little-sister!"

Except that Yui is trying to set Maiko up with Kaoru, and while Yui may be basically an anime character it's absolutely definitely completely 100% not that kind of anime, thank you very much.

No wonder his sister has a complex.

I guess she'll just have to settle for being God-Empress of Japan.
And having our harem. That's important.

To be fair, in a non-meguca AU by the time Yui would be in high school she'd have almost as much going for her and would be just as popular as Kaoru was.

Though if you go by anime cliche Natsuki would probably have more fangirls than Yui, which would be kind of hilarious.

We've been slacking hard on achievements, so doing that is super important! We've only got one in the whole quest. :V

On the other hand, up until now you also had 100% of the achievements I ever got around to coming up with, so... yeah. :V

Also, as a side note; seeing how we're in the southwest, would it be worth jumping on top of a building and using our magic sense to look for caligraphyguca after the conversation with Konno?

You could certainly try, but unless she happens to be currently transformed, not too far away, and somewhere that doesn't have large groups of people in the background behind her, it won't do much good.

Did Kaoru not ever get stacks of valentine chocolate?

I'm assuming a lot of girls were scared off due to the whole mistaking "awkward introvert" for "cool and aloof" thing. Or lost their nerve and claimed it was the platonic gift version while deluding themselves into thinking he'd somehow magically realize the ~*+*~ true feelings ~*+*~ behind it.

Or maybe he's just that oblivious, who knows.

Kaoru only wonders why Yui and Natsuki come down sick each week following a Valentines day.

Oh god, 9-year-old Yui hopped up on unreasonable quantities of chocolate. That's terrifying.

So this is probably pretty obvious to everybody, but given the delay i've just rediscovered the idea;

Kyuubi is gonna try to fuck us over once we get going. of course. Three things in life are inevitable, death taxes and that little shitstain screwing people over.

But the method he'll use is to support us all the way. No really, he loves us, totally helpful always! And we survive to eventually conquer the city, fill our team up with 20-30 girls, a mix of converts and local newbies.

But Kyuubi keeps contracting new girls. Not at a malicious rate, but steady enough that we cant keep up, the city doesn't have the capacity. We object, but he explains that this girl was in a car wreck, that one was on the edge of suicide, he's saving their life by granting their wish, we wouldn't want him to let them die would we?

So we're full, we're forced to expand, and Kyuubi 'helpfully' supports us as we push outwards. Naturally, this means everybody else is suspicious of us and hates us. The more Kyuubi likes us, the worse our PR gets, but we have no choice but to conquer as our girls starve.

So yeah. The empire of all of japan isn't a choice, its an inevitability.

If you were to indulge us, or me specifically as the concept is personally appealing, what achievements would you give? Using 'achievement' in the sense of the players accomplishing something you didn't necessarily expect.

An example would be:

Masquerade? - Immediately tell Minami the truth behind the 'conspiracy.'

Lunacy:
Carve your face into the moon.

Pest Control: Wipe out the Incubators.

World Peace: Achieve world peace.

These should be good to get us started.

Fortunately this is entirely in line with what I want to have happen, as firmly established two and a half years ago. So I'm not sure that this counts as screwing us at all. A constant stream of recruits to aid Yui in achieving her destiny sounds more like consistent help to me!

First Nagamioka, then Japan, then the world. The system works as long as the rate of recruitment can be compensated for by the rates of expansion and casualties. It's only when we control absolutely everything and there's no fresh territory to expand to that it collapses in on itself and we all die horribly.
