Wait, you guys are seriously considering this.

I should probably remind you that by the time we took Kaede on a hunt, she has surrendered completely and we offered her a job. Dragging a random girl who is hostile and has not surrendered (and don't mistake listening to you for surrendering) into a Witch Barrier is going to have hilarious results.

Witch Barriers are perfect kill sites due to limited possibilities of escape. I think she may take it sliiiightly differently.

Even with Kaede who is of middling power and whose will to fight us we have thoroughly broken, Maiko still advised us to be on guard. Cases when you can take someone openly antagonistic on a Witch Hunt and expect good things to come out of it are rare and far between.

I'm not really a fan of inviting her whole team when we haven't even met them, much less taking people on hunts. I feel like we've begun to count our chickens before they hatch with regards to Chizuka's reception to us.

I'm okay with inviting Chizuka herself to our group (based off Maiko's reading of her), or maybe setting up a meeting to to see her group and maybe invite them then, but I feel like we're taking this a bit fast. I'd prefer to make a statement now, and establish ourselves as in charge and capable (as well as recruiting).

I'm still not sure if it's more or less impressive than the concrete-chewing (which already warranted a new tag for this quest).
Maybe we just need an "omnivorous protagonist" tag? :V

I think I have to agree. It was cool that it worked out with Kaede, but this is a different situation and the factors that made it work last time don't seem to apply.

Amuzingly enough, this was brough up before, and Redshirt even amended it in a previous vote...
Probably want to rephrase this to make it more obvious that they'd be folded into our organizational structure instead of allowed to take territory. Something like:

-[] If her group can cooperate and tone things down - risking civilians is not okay, sheesh! - you'd be willing to bring them into your organization.
Vote Version 3.1!
-[x] If her group can cooperate and tone things down - risking civilians is not okay, sheesh! - you'd be willing to consider bringing them into your organization.
But then it resurfaced. Clearly, it's a sign that we fuss over the vote too much since we are going in circles now. :)

Generally, a physical description of a girl's costume, her full name, a rough description of what kind of magic she has, and a few bits of trivia about her life is enough to guarantee that Maiko can look a meguca up quickly and easily.
Wait. We have witnessed Chizuka's costume and magic, and that was enough for Maiko to deduce her name and nature.

Do we have enough information to Google Grimoire the calliguca? Her magic is really standing out, and Minami saw her costume.

I'd prefer to go with the Genial Precis' previous vote, let me see if I can find it.

Just not interested in the recent changes that have been made. *shrugs*

[x] Overtake Chizuka and halt her flight with nonlethal beams.
- [x] Use nonlethal beams to control her movements--make her stay more or less in one place and talk.
-- [x] Have Minami use her menacing targeting reticle to help box her in.
- [x] Snatch up a piece of the steel she was throwing at you before you take off.

[x] Once you've caught her...
- [x] Pop a piece of steel in your mouth and see if it is chewy.
- [x] Explain that, in general, meguca are welcome to immigrate so long as they swear allegiance to Yui as your adorable daimyo and obey some pretty common sense/basic decency rules (like 'not killing people' and 'dont wreck buildings people work really hard on them')
- [x] Anyway, what was she actually doing out here? Shouldn't she have had backup or something, or maybe any other teammates at all to patrol the territory they're apparently trying to claim?
- [x] Ask if she would like to stay and join your group. If not, you must ask her to leave.
-- [x] If she would not, amiably stand aside and let her go. You have no need to personally chase her out; you'll know if she lingers.

[x] Have Minami spy on Chizuka.
- [x] But don't cross the border with Tokyo to do so, and watch out for ambushes.
- [x] Try to use Chizuka to locate her teammates, in order to get info on them to feed to Maiko.
- [x] Use the menacing targeting reticle to chase her out if necessary.

[x] Brainmail the Itabashi girls, with Maiko in the background of the line. Ask if they know about Chizuka. Mention that she's from Nerima, her costume, and her magic. If they do, ask for the super abridged version, you're in the middle of a chase scene!

Vote 4.1

[X] Follow Chizuka up to the Tokyo/Nagamioka border. Try configuring your wand for a multispread configuration of punchbeams while you're at it, then start charging it up.
-[x] Minami and Maiko should tag along in case you get double ambushed by more Nerima girls or something. Minami can search for the other Nerima girls and relay to Maiko as you go.

[x] Brainmail Yumi, with Maiko in the background of the line. Ask if she knows about Chizuka. Mention that she's from Nerima, her costume, and her magic. If she does, ask for the super abridged version, you're in the middle of a chase scene!

[x] Message Chizuka:
Would you mind stopping? I'd like to talk about this, and being in a whacky chase scene makes that hard.
-[x] If she agrees, skip the next section. Else:

[x] Boost ahead to physically get in front of Chizuka in a burst of speed. Land in a display of physical strength.
- [x] If she tries to approach you in melee or get past you, use nonlethal beams to control her movements and get her to stand still.
- [x] If she tries anything with metal, assert your authority over any magic she tries to pull up and shut it down.

[x] Once she's staying still, speak to Chizuka. Address her by name.
-[X] Nagamioka is a governed territory. Implicitly invoke your authority as its pink and sparkly leader, and magically assert your authority as Momoko's heir to back up that impression.
- [x] If her group is okay with cooperating, you'd be willing to consider bringing them into your organization. But they'd have to tone things down and follow the rules of basic decency — risking civilians and destroying perfectly fine buildings for tactical advantage is not okay. Sheesh!
- [x] And what was she actually doing out here alone? Shouldn't she have had backup or something, or maybe any other teammates at all to patrol the territory they're apparently trying to claim?
- [x] Ask if she would like to stay and discuss things further.
-- [x] If she wouldn't, escort her to the edge of your territory.

[x] Have Minami spy on Chizuka without crossing the border; continue watching out for ambushes.
- [x] Try to use Chizuka to locate her teammates, in order to get info on them to feed to Maiko.

Pretty much what I wanted.

If I'm reading the update right, Maiko herself saw Chizuka, but I don't think she ever came close enough to Calli to see her (unless we can get a Minami pic sent to Maiko, then I don't think Maiko can get information quickly on Calli).

Redshirt's plan, just in the section you quoted directly as being less heavy handed, is attempting to use a very expensive ability (projection of authority) for very little gain

Is it a very expensive ability? I thought it is only expensive when it comes to interfering with wish magic, which it should be, but I can't think of a reason why that would be the case with Chizuka.

Nevill is correct. The initial impression of it being expensive was because Koharu wished to stand out, be noticed and respected and admired as herself. Yui taking charge of the situation in territory Koharu considered her own directly went against that wish, and Yui spent a good chunk of corruption to overpower that wish.

If you read the relevant update you can probably even spot the exact moment that occurs!

As I understand, our magic can force Railguca regard Yui like her group leader, but what the point to force her regard Yui like Momoko's successor?
She should know that Momoko is dead, she came here specifically to claim Momoko's territory and kill/chase away Momoko's successor.

It's magically enforced conviction that we, specifically, really are Momoko's successor, as opposed to just a claimant to that position.

Does she know Momoko has a successor - as in, a protector of the city as opposed to people who divided it and are squabbling over territory like everyone else out there? I don't think word about us got out yet.

To clarify, Yui doesn't have that kind of precise control. Or rather, the magic forces the conclusion ("this girl is legitimately in charge") and lets the target's mind supply a justification for that authority. If the target cannot rationalize a justification for anyone having the necessary authority (for any reason, including "no, I'm in charge" from Hisae or "who fucking cares" from the crowd of drunks you tried it on) the effect won't work.

About the only place where you'd benefit from Momoko's perceived authority would be if you pulled that trick on Maiko or Himari, which... isn't necessary anyway, and would definitely not improve your relationship with them.

Edit: Oh, right, and I was worried someone may connect our family name to the names of the people who apparently own half of the city, find our home and murder them/assassinate us. Unsure of how real that concert is.

The name is common enough that it's not something they'd conclude immediately. The "she's also super rich" bit would probably clue people in, though.

Why? The Menacing Targeting Reticle would play the role of an escort, and I think it would send a more powerful message: instead of being escorted by a meat puppet/the territory holder herself, she will be escorted by an All Seeing Eye.

Bonus: Minami would totally find that idea super cool. :V

Seeing your guests to the door is a part of being a host.

Well yeah. Battles of life and death are no cause to be rude, geez.

My bigger worry than a simple invasion is guerrillas, to be honest.

Well, compared to Yui they are pretty big, but-- oh, guerrillas. Never mind.

Same here; I hope we get Chou's tracking magic soon.

There's a reason I've added "check on her garden" to vote suggestions recently...

Maybe we just need an "omnivorous protagonist" tag? :V

Eh... so far, Yui has at least been sensible enough not to actually eat this stuff. :V

Maiko managed to get a clear view of Chizuka's Soul Gem for long enough to do the search that way. That's by far the most efficient option, but Maiko needs to see the Gem in person for it to work.

Do we have enough information to Google Grimoire the calliguca? Her magic is really standing out, and Minami saw her costume.

Not enough for Maiko to find her immediately. Given how distinctive her magic is, though, with a description from Minami and a bit of guesswork she can probably look up calligraphy girl in a few minutes rather than half an hour.

The name is common enough that it's not something they'd conclude immediately.

Speaking of which, while checking whether I used a common way of writing Aikawa (I did) I was reminded how hilariously appropriate it seemed when I picked it. You'd expect the "ai" part to mean "love", right? Magical girl genre conventions about the power of love and all that, of course the protagonist would be named something involving love, &c. Yeah? Yeah.

Yui's family name (and keep in mind, this is apparently one of the common ways to write it) is 哀川, where the kanji 哀 means "sorrow, grief, pathos". :V

Mm-hm, I see.
"Look, we'll talk later. Go home," you order Koharu. "They're after her, anyway."
"But, I--" Koharu protests, but you cut her off.
"Just go," you say. "Nobody's taking your territory, and nobody's dying tonight."
She hesitates. You meet her eyes, and the tension in the air seems to shatter. Koharu looks away, head lowered. "Sorry for the trouble," she says quietly, then turns and runs back to Nagamioka.
(Emphasis mine.)

Good to know. Dropping it.

Does that mean Yui can make an Ozymandias quote a pun on her name?

That sounds pretty Yui...

Or "pathetic", apparently, if my googling doesn't fail me. And the second character means... "river"? Somehow "grief river" as a phrase sounds like a metaphor for tears.

...and her first name's character, 唯, means alone. Our protagonist is literally named "cries alone".

Hardly seems fitting for such an optimistic girl, but I suppose there's plenty of story ahead...

Judging by the words using that kanji, I'm fairly certain that should be "pathetic" in purely the "deserving of pity/sympathy" sense, not the usual pejorative sense. And yeah, -kawa or -gawa meaning river is super common in Japanese family names.

...and her first name's character, 唯, means alone.

Again, judging by the words using that kanji, I think that's "alone" in the sense of standing apart or being distinctly one of a kind, not in the sense of "lonely". Though there's obviously some overlap there.

Our protagonist is literally named "cries alone".

Well, grieving in isolation while shielding others within her barrier is the core theme of Yui's witch. :V

Though it was more obvious with the original concept before I decided to put Yui's wish up for a vote.

I was ninja'd but I came here to say that her name does indeed mean "river of sorrow." ( Trust me. I'm a Japanese major. :p Although I still don't consider myself anywhere near fluent so ymmv!)

Anyway, votes? Hmm. This looks good.

Actually, here: The Witch card profile for the original concept of Yui's Witch:

the hollow witch
The Hollow Witch, whose nature is to carry burdens.

A tender-hearted witch who cannot abide suffering. She has discarded everything that once filled her heart and now exists merely to carry the burdens of others. All who enter the garden of her barrier will know only joy, their sorrows stolen away to be borne by the witch who kneels in chains of her own making. Her tears fall freely, flowing as rivers that bring forth lotus blossoms wherever they reach.

As the weight of her burden grows, so too does the expanse of her garden. She will not rest until she has taken upon her back all the sorrows of the mortal world. Then, at the end of all things, the Hollow Witch shall weep alone forevermore.

???: Familiars of the Hollow Witch. Their duty is to care for the witch's guests and ensure their safety. As the outside world only causes pain, they regretfully forbid guests from leaving.

Basically a mini-Gretchen. :V
