I did some looking at side assumptions, but it looks like ruby has thermal conductivity on par with lead or steel, rather than aluminum or copper, so it would experience the significant differential heating necessary for thermal expansion to matter.

Do note that Soul Gems are not actually corundum, just "similar" according to Maiko. This was in reply to Yui asking specifically how durable they are, so properties like thermal expansion may not be the same.

On the other hand, it's Maiko. Who's the kind of person that would say "corundum" instead of "ruby" when talking to someone like Yui and would have to stop and think about it to realize why that might be less than helpful. And who can remark casually on whether soul gems have any plane of cleavage. So.... yeah.

That said, as OOC knowledge I'll say that anything that wouldn't damage a similarly-sized ruby won't damage a soul gem either. Specific properties I won't commit to unless it becomes important because, eh, effort. :V

In other news, a pre-emptive "welcome to the present" for @strauss and @NeverDies, who appear to have been archive binging the quest based on the post rating notifications I've seen. :V

They picked one hell of a time to start reading, is this the most contentious vote yet?

There was a bit of a shitstorm over our wish, but this is definitely up there,

The stuff about the wish doesn't count because that was my fault. :V

I skimmed the index page a while back and looked at the number of pages between updates and I'm pretty sure this was by far the most heavily debated actual vote, even including the wish. All the other large jumps in page numbers were because of tangential discussions, such as backstory or (heh) the moral implications of long-term gemming vs. killing.

(heh) the moral implications of long-term gemming vs. killing.
And so those debates can basically be considered a part of this one (if we cared enough to measure) since they were just a precursor to the actual debate about the morality of killing vs long term gemming (and shipping to Dubai).

And god I never thought I'd type something like that on a forum, but hey, these are the little things that make PMMM quests worth it.

Okay, so here's the current, still confusing tally. Votes are not closed (quite) yet.

The exact vote counts aside, Vebyast's vote is in the lead after a lot of discussion and the total number of votes is... more voters than I realized this Quest even had, actually, so unless something drastic happens in the next couple hours I'm gonna close votes even if I won't have time to write until tomorrow.

Vote tally:

[x] Sigh I'm not dealing with this...
-[x] Telepathically contact Maiko and warn her of what you're about to do. Make sure she can actually catch it.
-[x] Throw her Gem, hard, out to the cut off distance. Have Maiko catch it out of sight and carry it the rest of the way if necessary.
-[x] To Kaede: When I said you were leaving, it was not optional. You'll either leave of your own free will, or I'll disconnect you from your body and you'll wake up in a shipping container on the way to Dubai.
[x] Return their gems and allow them to stay under the same terms as Yumi until they decide.

-[x] ...You're perfectly happy to cut off her contact with her Soul Gem and shelve the problem until you don't have so much to deal with, though.

[x] You'd hand their gems to Yumi or Maiko, but you don't want to have Momoko's reputation, nor do you want to perpetuate the cycle of ruthlessness. You'd exile them, but that would only move the problem somewhere else. So instead you're going to try to rehabilitate them.
[x] Look her right in the eye.
-[x] You don't get to make demands of me. Not of where you'll live, not of what you'll do, and certainly not what I'll do.
[x] Use your ability to usurp and forcibly end both of their soul gem/body connections.
-[x] You'll deal with them later, one at a time, and when it's not urgent. Maybe sooner rather than later for Kaede, but Naoko's going to have to wait until you have more practice and more resources.
--[x] And by resources you mean mindfuckery. Your other option is to kill her. Ethically neutral, pragmatically superior.

Storing them is essentially a non-choice, but whatever. It beats sending them away, at least insofar as it actually leaves us options and gives Maiko and Yumi, and probably a few others, a chance to tell us to suck it up and kill them already.

Anyway, I guess this is where we start our Soul Gem collection, because I'm sure as hell never going to vote to wake them up unless it's to execute them.

Coming from just you, no, you weren't too rude or anything.

Coming from you and 3 other people at the same time, it felt a bit much, but you still weren't explicitly insulting or anything so no worries.

I was more frustrated with my apparent inability to communicate properly, a feeling I'm sure we've all experienced before.

Anyways, no hard feelings?

No hard feelings from me at least. I can definitely relate to trying to say something and people just plain not getting it (which is the main reason I stopped trying to debate Goku vs Superman). It's all good. :)

You think we could hijack the Soul Gem's connection and link it up to ourselves, and become a conglomerate MG? Note: This may be a bad idea.

Well, I guess I'll make my last plea then. Comments like the one above are why I want to make the choice now - because at the moment we have no clear plan to wake them up, and that's just a death sentence, if that doesn't happen in any reasonable time frame.

Please vote to make the decision now.

No. Because I'm not cool with just executing them right now, nor do I think trying to rehabilitate them is either a good idea or worth the effort. I want to exile them, preferably somewhere they can't actually do much damage.

I'm firmly of the opinion that making the decision now will hurt Yui more in the long term than making it later.

You think we could hijack the Soul Gem's connection and link it up to ourselves, and become a conglomerate MG? Note: This may be a bad idea.

Hijacking the connection is kind of the opposite of that? It means controlling the other meguca's body, which Yui would perceive as occupying two bodies simultaneously. On the opposite side of that you could have a double meguca by attaching two Soul Gems to one body, which I think happens in Kazumi because of course it would.

If you want to actually link two Soul Gems directly and be a conglomerate meguca in the same way that Big W is a conglomeration, that's an entirely different matter. It's also pretty high on Maiko's "If only there was an ethical means of experimenting with this" research list, which is why she's interested in studying conglomerate souls in Grief Seed form.

No. Because I'm not cool with just executing them right now, nor do I think trying to rehabilitate them is either a good idea or worth the effort. I want to exile them, preferably somewhere they can't actually do much damage.

The winning vote as written is basically putting off a decision, not choosing to exile. It's a minor point as far as what Yui does, but could make a big difference in what impression the other meguca nearby get of Yui.

If we're making the decision now, I say death sentence.

"But it's not in Yui's character, we can't take the law into our own hands, we can't kill a prisoner in cold blood, we can't..."

Okay, fine. That's why I'm gemming her now so we can discuss option in depth with Maiko and the others. Find out whether rehabilitation is feasible, scrap together an 'inquisition' to learn more about the situation, etc.

It's a minor point as far as what Yui does, but could make a big difference in what impression the other meguca nearby get of Yui.
That's actually the biggest reason that I wanted the "what am I doing" line. It's a very solid, concise way of expressing to everybody around us that we're not being weak so much as refusing to compromise our decisionmaking because someone is trying to browbeat us into making a decision on the spot.

It does. They are twins though, so that may have something to do with it.
Also, they're psychos who collect Soul gems 'cause they're pretty.

I'm aware. Exiling them is something best done after the other, more important people, are taken care of.

And I'll write it as such, yes. It's not so much about appearing weak as it is the impression it gives of how Yui approaches difficult decisions in general.

It does. They are twins though, so that may have something to do with it.

Oh, I forgot those were the same character. Figures.

I wonder if I should have her show up in this quest...

Majo Shoujo Maiko Magica? :V

Honestly though, focusing on Maiko's !!SCIENCE!! would probably get boring pretty quickly. As I've said before, though, there is the possibility of unlocking other meguca as playable perspective characters, including Maiko.
