Recruiting hired help from Hellish places.
John grinned as they slowly drove along another route of roads near 'Doe Park', as the new facilities would be known. "It is a LOT easier to just replace the top layer of stuff! Thanks sis."

His slightly distracted sister absently nodded. "Not just faster but safer. Since you did a deep replacement for the streets closest to our new bakery and all that, anyone attempting to USE those tunnels and stuff you blocked in will need to find alternative routes."

The car slowed slightly as John began to replace and upgrade another intersection. "If you block EVERYTHING off, people will just dig new tunnels. Or try to, anyway. Best to take advantage of people and demons and stuff being lazy… Leave them detour routes and they won't BOTHER to spend months trying to dig out your barriers around our place."

Huh. That made sense. "After these streets, we just need a couple to connect up to the main roads right?" New road laid down, reinforced with Essence, and wiring not damaged! Check!

Not reinforced with the GOOD stuff, mind you. If the streets out here were TOO strong then they couldn't be dug up for future maintenance work or potential upgrades to lights and stuff. Only the materials next to John and Jessica's property were empowered to be damn near indestructible.

Jessica nodded. "Honestly we could have done HALF this much repair work and called it a day… But having working street lights and a clear and sturdy road to and from our place just makes sense."

True. "I still say I should have put Torches into those street lights, by the way."

She chuckled. "Not with this place so FULL of shady people. They'd hire people to tear them down and that would be annoying and make these roads dark as pitch again… Best to keep stuff like that near our properties where we can protect it."

Meh, fine. "After I get the parking set up, what's the plan?" After all, they'd need lifeguards for the pool and staff for the hotel/apartment complex and get the word out about the flea market, maybe try and draw in some local crafters and stuff to get that jump started…

His sister turned left to get to the last set of roads to repair today. "I can arrange supplies and stuff to be shipped to the place once you get the parking and an unloading dock set up, but after that we will be getting a BUNCH of part time employees thanks to that local school."

Oh. "The one built over the portal to Hell?"

She sighed. "Yeah, that one. We just need enough people to get started and then we can start hiring locals who need a hand for more permanent workers… Since as I told you, the local job hunting agencies are more like menu creation hubs."

Yeah, his sister had NOT been happy how some of the local employment offices acted as snitches to let local monsters know which places are likely to be undefended with delicious outsiders ready to harvest and which individuals were not currently employed/would be missed. "I thought you had mind-whammied them to send employment hunting people directly to us?"

Jessica winced. "From now ON, sure… But it was too late for the previous job searchers by the time I got there. Most… Most don't last long after contacting one of those businesses."

The car ride was a bit silent as John automatically repaired roadwork. "That… That sucks."

She nodded. "Do what you can, adapt to what you can't. I'm hoping that directly hiring people from Sunnydale High and secretly informing the kids about the risks in this town might save them in the long run. So employing students is going to be a long term thing."

Reasonable. "What about the assholes setting people up to die?"

Her eyes focused HARD on the road. "It was mostly three people, one of which was blackmailed to comply. The other two suddenly decided to turn themselves in to the authorities for a multitude of crimes. Though from what I can tell they'll probably be eaten by something before they end up in court here... Anyway, he's the only one left now and he's eager enough to work with us in the future."

Guess that means the other two guys can't be used for experimental purposes after all... Then again, they also get to enjoy a corrupt police system that's been affected by Hell itself... So maybe it balances out?

Either way this basically altered the nature of his future employees. "At least we'll get locals eventually through them, right? This whole plan really only works if we start employing the local community to support it."

Because no one with a choice would want to stay in this reality honestly. Things were almost cartoonishly messed up here, at least in Sunnydale.

Guess in the short term they were going to be stuck with employing part-time workers. "If we are going to be hiring high school kids, should I dumb down the equipment I Craft to make the bread and stuff?"

Jessica chuckled. "If possible, completely automate EVERYTHING. Even THEN I'm positive they will find SOMEWAY to fuck it up… That's just how business works sometimes."

What!? "For real!?"

She nodded. "Never underestimate the talent and hard working nature of a high school student when it comes to somehow doing something embarrassing and socially awkward despite all efforts to do otherwise. And that's NOT considering our new 'Security System' you set up."

Huh? "Why would they be a problem?"

She didn't even glance his way. "You have a personal army of sexy iron women. It is going to mess with these hormonal teenagers BADLY, for the record."

Oh come on! "Hey, SOME of the golems were guys! A whole group of them even! And most of the female ones wore less than NC-17 clothing and armor and stuff! What about that girl with the dreadlocks and the wrappings?"

Jessica snorted. "That girl Sineya? One of the few Guardians you could apparently find details on for some reason, although we are still not sure why?"

John grinned! "Yeah her! Sure most of her stuff was classified and I'm still researching which bits are fiction or accurate, but she was wearing full chest coverings AND a skirt! Even had wrappings on her arms and legs and stuff, so that is like DOUBLE dressed up or something!"

His sister chuckled. "She's basically wearing a bathing suit top and her body is muscles and sex appeal. If anything the damaged wrappings will just melt teenage boys WORSE than simply wearing less because it will keep teasing and taunting them. Some girls too, I don't doubt."

Eugh. "Growing up sounds gross. Everything is about sex appeal and acting 'cool' and stuff."

As she drove back towards already recovered streets, Jessica grinned towards him. "I'm going to remind you of this when your physical body hits puberty, you know."

Meh, age was just a number and lots of gooey chemicals and stuff. "Whatever. Anyway, it's not MY fault most of the Iron Golems look like that."

She shrugged. "If the Defenders are selected because of how well remembered they were, then attractive ones who acted against stereotypes are the ones most likely to be selected. Or I assume exaggerated and with 'enhanced facts', considering how some of those ladies were WAY too attractive to be real."

Uh. "No, their bodies and clothing and stuff should be pretty accurate to what they looked like at the peak moment of raw Belief and at the instant of their legendary actions. At least, from what my senses can tell… Some facts and stuff just have too much momentum and power behind them, far too much to be affected by local memories or thoughts. And it may display a body from a different part of their personal timeline if they are missing a limb or something, since the golem provides the needed material to fix that."

His sister slowed the car to a stop. "You are saying there are hundreds of women THAT attractive in this world?"

Yep. "MOST people here are going to be handsome or beautiful. Because again, the Belief thing and how most parents Believe their kids are beautiful and how popularity or righteousness equals hotness and all that."

His sister considered that.

John glanced into the mirrors of the car… Repaired or not this was still a rough part of town. So at least they weren't blocking traffic. "I think most bad guys and evil people are automatically ugly too, unless it is someone falling into the 'sexy bad boy' or 'hot bad girl' stereotype. Or 'attractive girl but no one notices because she is a nerd' tropes, and stuff like that."

She stared at nothing for a while… And shook her head. "Too bad about the literal portal to Hell and the massive amounts of evil in this place. Right, we're pretty much done here. Let's go buy you some future parking lots."

Woo! "I'm going to be able to park SO MANY CARS!"

~~~Pocket System~~~
"Well I'M not going to apply for this! You know how rough that side of town is!? I might need some spending cash, but I'd rather just wait for my second weekly allowance than risk going to the POOR area."
"But I mean, the pay sounds pretty good…"
"TOO good, suspicious as heck."
"Yeah, probably some sort of sicko looking for high schoolers."
Alexander 'Xander' Harris blinked at the small group crowding around the job listing board.
The area was normally absent of people except those in dire straits and lacking other options… People like him, for example. Considering his home life and the 'support' of his drunk parents, supplementing his income by doing quick/potentially risky/theoretically deadly jobs had been a needed stop gap measure for several months already.
Sure, it was risking his life… But unlike his 'part time defending the world' job with Buffy, THESE risks actually earned him money and let him buy snacks or whatever.
Still: Why was 'his' job board suddenly popularity central?
Standing aside, he caught the attention of one of the socially outcast like himself. "Hey Greg, what's up with that mess?"
The guy huffed! "Hey Xander. Someone misfiled a job posting on the board, clearly got the salary wrong… It's way too high and has almost NO prerequisites or mandatory job history. Also says they are hiring a BUNCH of people…Cooks, custodians, guides, lifeguards, instructors, tutors, you name it! I'm pretty sure it's bullshit."
But you ALSO had one of the contact slips in your hand now, didn't you? "Sounds a bit crazy."
The boy relaxed slightly, assured that he had gotten away with it. "Yeah, I wouldn't bother messing with any of it, just wait till Snyder comes by and rips it down so you don't get in trouble."
Yeah, this must be a DAMN good opportunity if Greg was getting this shifty. "Thanks for the heads up!"
The guy huffed. "Yeah, us dweebs gotta keep an eye out for each other." His hand gripped the paper slip even tighter. "See you later, Harris."
MmHmm. "You too, Greg."
As his classmate scampered off, Xander's eyes shifted to the still crowded mob next to the job posting board.
Either this was an awesome way to not run out of twinkies this month, or it was another world destroying monster or cursed artifact that needed to feed on the souls of children or… Whatever horrific thing needed handling this week.
One or the other, this was right up his alley. "Excuse me, coming through… Oh, was that YOUR foot? Pardon me, Xan-man coming through!"
Let's investigate a job opportunity, shall we?
~~~Pocket System~~~

John was now underground and overworked. "Look, my sister really wants your group to stay down here in Safe Harbor's 'adult swim' area, alright? Just for now! And I'd really appreciate it."

The more explicitly clothed golems mostly shrugged or flicked him off or bounced on their toes or… Well, there was a range of reactions, but the massive number of sexy nearly-or-actually nude iron women began moving towards the newest underground swimming area.

Because being nude or close to it was hopefully more socially acceptable if concentrated into a single swimming area. At least, that's what Jessica argued.

John personally thought that the new secondary pool with its age restricted swimming policy would be plenty enough to accomplish her requirements, but whatever.

The important bit now was that all the men and women golems out HERE had clothing. Mostly.

It was just annoying, since over 30% of the summoned defenders turned out to be compromised when it came to clothing integrity.

What was it about this Realm that caused SO MUCH clothing damage to defenders? Or was his sister right and he was doing this subconsciously somehow?

[[System does not detect any known influence or modification of needed Crafting recipes that would cause such a discrepancy during Iron Golem construction.]]

Well, whatever. In the end he just needed to keep making golems until he had enough non-explicit ones to properly protect the rest of the facilities down here.

That said? The Adult Swim area was VERY well defended now. From near anything. Sheesh.

Right. "Should I set up the baked good production machines now? I'm going to build the bakery an actual kitchen too, because why not, but those automated Essence Food construction blocks are going to need a bit of testing first."

Jessica was still staring at the departed women.

John hummed. "Some infinite water source blocks will handle the vast majority of our future material needs, but maybe I should also make something that generates Wheat itself and processes it into flour too… You know, so if we hire actual bakers or cooks or whatever, they can start making new stuff."

After all, with Essence versions of water and flour and milk and eggs and stuff? Well you could bake up a whole MESS of new dishes!

Jessica still stared at nothing. "Damn…"

Wait, was she drooling? "Sis?"

She jerked in place. "I'VE GOT THE SUNSCREEN!"

…Uh. "Good?"

The siblings stared at each other for a moment.

John coughed. "So… Set up the bakery machines now? Yes?"

She nodded firmly while blushing! "Yep, great idea, good, let's go do that now. Onwards!"

Right, let's automate some cooking equipment! John just had to make it so simple a high schooler could do it.

That shouldn't be TOO hard, right?

So, will the iron golems need cleaning? You know that'd be a very important and desired job for teens. Most buffed and polished statues ever.

I can't wait to see what the neutral belief food/water does to the locals. Improving luck is just the start. That they already start out at a 7 and just go on up from there should mean that physical changes are less.

If their pools cleaned off the local belief and enhanced beauty, I could see the local cheer team going from 9s down to 6s.

Folks would show up just to see the statues. That alone would be a major tourist draw. I can see Greg, Xander, and Willow ending up trying to research who those statues are of.

It could end up having a temple effect as well. Everyone that visits would just know to nod their heads and respect their past heroes. The more that believe, the more likely their legends are to be known and remembered as well.

Once the locals get a look at the Doe's businesses, they'll think that they've accidentally entered a fae realm or similar.

Right.

…Damn, he was short again, wasn't he?

[[HOST's current body is biologically 16 years old.]]

Eugh. "Growing up sounds gross. Everything is about sex appeal and acting 'cool' and stuff."

Feel like the MC should be more... Idk, curious about that stuff? instead of acting like he is not growing up too, or like he is not going through puberty too. That or he has already experienced puberty, and should now be attracted to that stuff.

Dunno what those swimming area's look like, but I'm personally going to imagine them as looking like an indoor Water Park, and for the Adult Swim section, maybe something like a hedonistic Greek Bath, combined with some elements from an indoor waterpark for fun. Maybe pool bar too.

How long till Buffy starts investigating? Will she recognize some likenesses? Will the Watchers Council send someone? The Asshats. It has/ had good guys, but most retired.

Does Buffy count? As she died once and was revived by Xander ( Who Buffy thought Liam did, a Vampire. )

If hostiles try to invade, does it send out a call like a hivemind to all?

Chance of Xander becoming possessed by the Cookie Monster due to a serious of unfortunate events: Rising.

Who will get involved after Xander? Will it be a curious Buffy or a jelly Willow? Xander is surrounded by Iron Supermodel/ bots! Dressed scantily/ summer fling!

Will he be called Pool-boy, and not mind at all?

The Bakery, will it make Essence Doughnuts that transform into Twinkies?

Xander will become a Paladin! A protector of twinkies!

"If you block EVERYTHING off, people will just dig new tunnels. Or try to, anyway. Best to take advantage of people and demons and stuff being lazy… Leave them detour routes and they won't BOTHER to spend months trying to dig out your barriers around our place."
Oh hey, something about that seems familiar. :V
True. "I still say I should have put Torches into those street lights, by the way."

She chuckled. "Not with this place so FULL of shady people. They'd hire people to tear them down and that would be annoying and make these roads dark as pitch again… Best to keep stuff like that near our properties where we can protect it."
Well, to hire people to tear them down would require them to figure out what was causing the issue. So it's likely that it'd just be 'hire people to mess things up in general, in the hopes of finding and breaking it by chance'. I would think that such an action might classify the vandals as 'hostile', but I suppose it might not fall under the Torch protections (given that for them to be an actual problem to be taken down, it kind of feels like it would help prevent that as well). It would certainly fall under the Iron Golem protections.

Completely believable that Jessica was getting a 'close enough' reasoning to prevent John from creating a huge, attention grabbing situation. And allow her and John to get data on how the areas they're directly defending are reacted to by Bills and other monsters. Where they can easily get said data. I mean, already they've done some drastic changes in creating a Safe area in what was one of the more Dangerous ones, along with whatever knock-on effects of dealing with the job hunting agencies no longer providing free/easy meals for monsters. (Though I am a bit curious as to what the remaining guy was blackmailed with, considering that he wasn't turned over to the police as well. So it couldn't be too serious. So probably something incredibly embarrassing/reputation shattering, but not actually illegal, combined with threats on his life.)

Speaking of the Iron Golems, I kind of half expect John to decide to try making clothing for them as their numbers continue to rise. Just so he can have them defend other areas too. With them either being overly fancy/bizarre or just make the issue worse. (On the fist part, something like Iron Golems in business suits or expensive clothing in general. Or in what are essentially elaborate Halloween costumes. Or cosplay outfits.) Jessica might be a bit disappointed, though.

Sineya being one of the Defenders, and not causing issues, at least implies that this is post Buffy confronting her. Outside of maybe her Iron Golem form not counting as 'The Slayer', thus not part of the 'has to work alone'. Which might be the case, since the rest pretty much states it's before that point.

Sill: Why was 'his' job board suddenly popularity central?
'Still'.

K: ...Your spelling needs work. It's legitimately painful to try parsing what you're trying to say.

Jessica's mind helpfully envisioned another 20 sinful battle maidens of iron and war and armor looking

Having finished the Buffy TV show, I can safely say that that is a very good idea. Also, hopefully Kendra
will return as a golem.

Jessica snorted. "That girl Sineya? One of the few Guardians you could apparently find details on for some reason, although we are still not sure why?"

Just read the latest chapter, All the slayers are gonna turn up in iron form like the world's best demon invasion aren't they?

Either this was an awesome way to not run out of twinkies this month, or it was another world destroying monster or cursed artifact that needed to feed on the souls of children or… Whatever horrific thing needed handling this week.

Knowing Xander's luck, this is Probably John and Jessica, but he might run into a demon somehow, even with all of the protections.

That said? The Adult Swim area was VERY well defended now. From near anything. Sheesh.

That pool is going to be filled with iron. If it's hot girls or nose bleeds, it will be filled.

Update today as scheduled.
I'm a bit worried that some habits of Adam might have an influencing effect on the Pocket System.

Or maybe John just has similar habits? No... No, this might be closer to unconscious, subliminal contamination. Not a ton, but... Yeah.

On the plus side, the new facilities will be VERY sturdy, modularly built, and able to withstand a surprisingly large amount of water pressure despite being built underground!

On an unrelated note, I've been reading about Harry Potter accidentally finding himself and then making himself a pet to himself. In a non-sexual way. And I once more am thankful that John has a three part unification system of Soul, Body, and Mind and not a hive-mind/existence setup. Much easier to keep an eye on your bits and pieces if they stay connected in a literal way most of the time.

Woo! "I'm going to be able to park SO MANY CARS!"

"What do you mean there aren't that many cars in California/USA/North America/World?"

Feel like the MC should be more... Idk, curious about that stuff? instead of acting like he is not growing up too, or like he is not going through puberty too. That or he has already experienced puberty, and should now be attracted to that stuff.

Alien psychology. He doesn't map well with "human" growth and thought processes.

Rapturous Construction
John hummed happily as he continued modifying materials. "See, at first I was worried about trying to Craft Command Blocks outside of Steve's world, since it might accidentally hook itself into the fundamental workings of the local reality…"

Which could be an issue, and might make the block itself connected to existence and stuff, thus making its removal or modification tricky.

He grinned as the design hissed and popped. "But then I was like, 'Go on, do it!' and it turned out alright! A hopper to feed in materials, an integrated chest to hold the output, a furnace to take care of any Essential baking that was required, one crafting table for obvious reasons… And voila!"

John's sister stared at the silver cube monstrosity/creation with… Less than thunderous applause. "No."

What!? Wait, stay calm. "What do you mean, 'no'?"

She began moving around his prototype. "The input can NOT be big enough for a person or a teenager WILL climb into it eventually. You need a dedicated input specifically for your Essence Water source blocks, or a chamber built into it to generate the new ones required… Either way, we can't risk infinite water leaks. Get rid of ALL these buttons, that control panel, the levers and pulleys and…"

Huh!? "But how will people be able to adjust the crust density of the Bread!? You NEED these settings!"

Jessica gave him a look. "Won't the bread shift into a new form entirely for each customer?"

That wasn't the point! "Just because the final product CAN modify itself to be perfect for every entity with self identity that attempts to consume it doesn't mean we should skimp corners! How will this machine even be considered functional if you can't adjust the heating density field and the harmonic nutritional disturbulator curves!?"

She pointed at the mass of wires hanging off the device from most of its sides, ignoring his entirely valid concerns. "Those will get yanked or cut or twisted, or shock someone. Get rid of ALL those sharp edges, add rubber to the base so it won't slide so easily…"

Her suggestions/complaints/issues were enumerated and ongoing. Damn it. "Wait, no! I want to keep the 'brokenness' meter! What if someone needs to know what percentage of the equipment isn't already automatically repaired yet!? The entire system could be down and unusable for an entire HOUR or so with no calculated time till recovery! This is important information!"

Jessica groaned for some reason. "John, would you please listen to me?"

…Damn it. "Yes sis."

She gave him a grateful smile. "Thank you. See how your device can do… Basically everything?"

Well, yeah. "It covers MOST of my design requirements, yes?"

His sister nodded. "Now, stop for a moment. Imagine using this machine for a lengthy amount of time. Let's say an eight hour shift."

Where was she going with this? Fine, whatever. "Alright, I'm doing that."

Jessica gave a wry grin. "NOW imagine, without your knowledge, someone tries to be helpful and flips… Uh, THIS knob/switch/toggle thing, over here."

WHAT!? "But THAT would alter the flour dispersal patterns and…" Wait, was she about to!? "STOP! THE BROWNING MIGHT BE UNEVEN!"

She sighed, moving her hand away. "See? And that was just a scenario where I was being helpful. What if I was just careless? Or wanted to see what one of those levers did? Or worse: If I was angry for some reason and just wanted to mess with the entire thing?"

GASP! "You WOULDN'T!"

Jessica nodded. "Correct… But a teenager would."

John stared at her in complete confusion. "...What?"

His sister walked around the machine being examined. "Some kids will argue over something, or get distracted, or be tired, or THINK they are doing things correctly… And they will mess with stuff. Anything and anything you let them interact with? Assume someone might, maliciously or not, accidentally or not, mess up that setting."

Oh.

Oh dear.

That would be bad. "I… I need to redesign this."

Jessica nodded. "It would be for the best. Besides, I thought the plan was for our new bakery to have one machine for each auto-Crafted product type sold?"

Huh? "Yes?"

She waved at the device. "Why try and smush them all into one device?"

John blinked at her. "I didn't." He pointed at the equipment that filled up the back of this entire room. "This just makes bread."

Jessica paused. "I'm sorry?"

He began reviewing the design from basic principles. "Yeah, I guess it was good to talk about this before working on the machine for Crafting Cookies."

She stared at him… Then back at the van sized device covered in control panels, levers, toggles, tiggles, ropes, sliders, shifters, grinders, flippers and floppers. And again back to him.

Which was fine, because he was now going to be SUPER busy and at least she was letting him think about the issue. "Right, if I establish far more static variables and settings I can remove a lot of the interfaces, probably even remove the reloading mechanisms and half the delivery storage queue since it won't be requiring temporal manipulation to allow time for chef input during the Crafting process…"

He was half through disassembling the entire mess when Jessica was suddenly THERE holding him up in her hands. "Uh… Yes? Sis?"

She stared into his eyes. "New design requirements: Two inputs only, one for your special water, the other for purchased raw material. One product produced. One output container. A single switch to turn it off or on, with it automatically cutting off if the output container is full or it doesn't have enough input or if it detects something is broken or whatever."

Normally, here he would argue. Complain about how much fine grade control would be lost in the Crafting process without his ingenious and intuitive control mechanisms, about the potential drop of efficiency by an entire 0.0000384 %! About all SORTS of things that would be lost by such a drastic simplification!

Then again, John was currently dangled in her grip.

His sister was STRONG for her size, good grief! "Uh… For just the bread machine, right?"

Her eyes were serious. "One machine. Per. Product. One for cookies, one for bread, one for cake, ONE. Got it?"

Aww. "Yes sis."

Jessica nodded, already much happier. "Thank you, John. At least this way we won't have some bully accidentally or purposefully attempt to turn a classmate into cookies when working part time."

Huh? Why would ANYONE… How COULD anyone even!?

Oh.

…He glanced at the room sized input hopper.

The one that his future employees theoretically would be entering all the time to stack up the materials for processing, the one that would automatically harvest materials within when activated.

Yeah.

Yeah, that was a fairly good point.

In fact? Best prevent that scenario entirely. "I'll just… Add some safety checks to make sure nothing sentient or sapient is accepted by the equipment as input, shall I?"

Maybe… Maybe a LOT of safety and security checks.

Just in case.

~~~Pocket System~~~
Mayor Richard Wilkins happily hummed as he strode between meetings. "And BOTH of them suddenly decided to turn themselves in?"
Allan Finch nodded. "Confessed to a rather lengthy number of crimes and past actions as well."
The Mayor sat with a cheerful sigh at his now blood splatter free desk with satisfaction. "I suppose they might have felt a sudden surge of guilt and undergone a moral crisis of some sort. Not everyone can handle the up and going lifestyle of lower middle class consumerism and the deadly risks of part time employment and/or recruitment."
Mr. Finch nodded, unmoved. "Of course, sir."
Oh well, in the end it mattered not. "Will we need to arrange replacements? After all, the town always requires an active temp agency or three considering the turnover rate."
Perhaps another culling was in order… Though that tended to be a bit harsh on his poll numbers most times. Or a major boost, depending on who was being culled… Politics was a bit of a rough profession as well, when it came down to it!
Mayor Wilkins checked his schedule… Yes, he still had a bit of time before his next appointment. "Anyone we know responsible for those two suddenly growing a conscience? Or at least, pretending to have one for a few hours."
Mr. Finch nodded as he accepted a report from one of those lovely creatures that worked in the informational departments.
Lovely fellows, those shadow demons, very efficient! Even if their required payments of unsullied Souls was a bit steep they were worth every sacrifice.
His deputy reviewed the information. "It was that young miss reported yesterday Sir."
Hmm? Oh! "The young lady and younger brother pair with the recent unfortunate luck of losing so many grandparents at once? The ones with the large inheritance?"
A nod. "Indeed."
Sigh, these were dangerous times all over.
The Mayor idly tidied up his desk and ensured no finger segments or bone fragments were lost about or hiding away in some crevice. Cleanliness was important after all! "Last I heard they were setting up a quaint little home near the Skyreach Burial Grounds place, next to Daginash Mausoleum. Though if I remember correctly, our people had some issues checking up on them as requested."
It was always so nice up in that part of town this time of year! So calm and peaceful, as long as nothing living wandered within range. Just a pleasant place to spend an evening or two.
Although, that did remind him of his three informants and their lack of performance. "Speaking of which, did I mention my displeasure over those fellows who abandoned their tasks without properly informing us beforehand?"
Mr. Finch nodded as he continued reviewing the documents. "Already processed sir. The garden should be quite lovely after a few weeks now. Meanwhile, replacements are already being selected and will be prepared by the end of the day."
Oh, very good. "So the young lady was visiting employment agencies? And SURVIVED the experience as well!? Quite impressive! I always support the younger generation, biological or otherwise, taking the initiative and getting out there. Striving for their dreams and goals! Having a bit of pep in your step always helps you, I like to say."
His deputy shifted papers before handing one over. "As you say, sir. She seems to have used the large amounts of inherited funds to invest in the local community as well. The following properties have been acquired over the last thirty two hours."
Oh!? A young civic minded woman indeed! "Let's see here… Oh, THAT area of town."
Hmm, it was the section most recently scheduled for 'decontamination', repossession, and eventual reconstruction into something useful over the next few months... But such plans were easily restructured and altered! "This is quite a sizable amount of real estate… I do hope this effort goes well for her."
Mr. Finch hesitated. "Shall I… Suggest certain elements steer clear of said location?"
Hmm? "Oh no, not needed. Being able to withstand the struggles of business and avoid the risks of entrepreneurship is part of what builds character!" Besides, something told him that she'd be able to handle the local night life just fine even without special consideration.
After all, those two gentlemen who suddenly turned themselves in didn't show ANY obvious signs of persuasion at all. Not even a small amount of organ consumption or Soul piercing! Very impressive indeed.
Such a young lady with that level of professionalism and such immeasurable talent and abilities, related to sorcery or supernatural origins or not?
She'd be fine even without him offering an unneeded hand. "Has the young woman submitted any plans for the property acquired? Requested any business licenses or needed permits?"
Another page was passed over. Let's see here… Oh! This was quite ambitious! Housing, temporary and otherwise, a community area, a public market… A bakery? How charming! "On second thought, send a few memos out to keep an eye on the local riff raff. I don't want her upcoming grand opening to be disturbed in any way."
Mr. Finch blinked, apparently stunned by him altering his decision so decisively. "Sir?"
Mayor Wilkins waved the paper. "A bakery, Mr. Finch! My breakfast snacks haven't been the same since that lovely place over on the west side closed down so explosively."
Losing access to Mrs. Cinglins' breakfast muffins had been quite… Frustrating to the Mayor.
And the following bloodbath, satisfying or not, properly delegated or not, had failed to return such lovely muffins to his morning routine.
Hopefully this new bakery could fill such a void until additional options could be established in his town… It could be surprisingly difficult to ensure a proper swath of available services in Sunnydale despite the amount of resources he dedicated towards that purpose.
That this ongoing difficulty was likely due to the fairly high death rate of his domain was unfortunate, but he'd adapt to the inconvenience like he always did.
A sudden scream perked him right up. "Oh! My 10:30 seems to be here! Send them in, Mr. Finch."
His deputy nodded. "Yes sir."
Oops, best put away the stainable paperwork and such first! Blood and internal juices always wreaked havoc with his paperwork.
