John grinned as they slowly drove along another route of roads near 'Doe Park', as the new facilities would be known. "It is a LOT easier to just replace the top layer of stuff! Thanks sis."
His slightly distracted sister absently nodded. "Not just faster but safer. Since you did a deep replacement for the streets closest to our new bakery and all that, anyone attempting to USE those tunnels and stuff you blocked in will need to find alternative routes."
The car slowed slightly as John began to replace and upgrade another intersection. "If you block EVERYTHING off, people will just dig new tunnels. Or try to, anyway. Best to take advantage of people and demons and stuff being lazy… Leave them detour routes and they won't BOTHER to spend months trying to dig out your barriers around our place."
Huh. That made sense. "After these streets, we just need a couple to connect up to the main roads right?" New road laid down, reinforced with Essence, and wiring not damaged! Check!
Not reinforced with the GOOD stuff, mind you. If the streets out here were TOO strong then they couldn't be dug up for future maintenance work or potential upgrades to lights and stuff. Only the materials next to John and Jessica's property were empowered to be damn near indestructible.
Jessica nodded. "Honestly we could have done HALF this much repair work and called it a day… But having working street lights and a clear and sturdy road to and from our place just makes sense."
True. "I still say I should have put Torches into those street lights, by the way."
She chuckled. "Not with this place so FULL of shady people. They'd hire people to tear them down and that would be annoying and make these roads dark as pitch again… Best to keep stuff like that near our properties where we can protect it."
Meh, fine. "After I get the parking set up, what's the plan?" After all, they'd need lifeguards for the pool and staff for the hotel/apartment complex and get the word out about the flea market, maybe try and draw in some local crafters and stuff to get that jump started…
His sister turned left to get to the last set of roads to repair today. "I can arrange supplies and stuff to be shipped to the place once you get the parking and an unloading dock set up, but after that we will be getting a BUNCH of part time employees thanks to that local school."
Oh. "The one built over the portal to Hell?"
She sighed. "Yeah, that one. We just need enough people to get started and then we can start hiring locals who need a hand for more permanent workers… Since as I told you, the local job hunting agencies are more like menu creation hubs."
Yeah, his sister had NOT been happy how some of the local employment offices acted as snitches to let local monsters know which places are likely to be undefended with delicious outsiders ready to harvest and which individuals were not currently employed/would be missed. "I thought you had mind-whammied them to send employment hunting people directly to us?"
Jessica winced. "From now ON, sure… But it was too late for the previous job searchers by the time I got there. Most… Most don't last long after contacting one of those businesses."
The car ride was a bit silent as John automatically repaired roadwork. "That… That sucks."
She nodded. "Do what you can, adapt to what you can't. I'm hoping that directly hiring people from
Sunnydale High and secretly informing the kids about the risks in this town might save them in the long run. So employing students is going to be a long term thing."
Reasonable. "What about the assholes setting people up to die?"
Her eyes focused HARD on the road. "It was mostly three people, one of which was blackmailed to comply. The other two suddenly decided to turn themselves in to the authorities for a multitude of crimes. Though from what I can tell they'll probably be eaten by something before they end up in court here... Anyway, he's the only one left now and he's eager enough to work with us in the future."
Guess that means the other two guys can't be used for experimental purposes after all... Then again, they also get to enjoy a corrupt police system that's been affected by Hell itself... So maybe it balances out?
Either way this basically altered the nature of his future employees. "At least we'll get locals eventually through them, right? This whole plan really only works if we start employing the local community to support it."
Because no one with a choice would want to stay in this reality honestly. Things were almost cartoonishly messed up here, at least in Sunnydale.
Guess in the short term they were going to be stuck with employing part-time workers. "If we are going to be hiring high school kids, should I dumb down the equipment I Craft to make the bread and stuff?"
Jessica chuckled. "If possible, completely automate EVERYTHING. Even THEN I'm positive they will find SOMEWAY to fuck it up… That's just how business works sometimes."
What!? "For real!?"
She nodded. "Never underestimate the talent and hard working nature of a high school student when it comes to somehow doing something embarrassing and socially awkward despite all efforts to do otherwise. And that's NOT considering our new 'Security System' you set up."
Huh? "Why would they be a problem?"
She didn't even glance his way. "You have a personal army of sexy iron women. It is going to mess with these hormonal teenagers BADLY, for the record."
Oh come on! "Hey, SOME of the golems were guys! A whole group of them even! And most of the female ones wore less than NC-17 clothing and armor and stuff! What about that girl with the dreadlocks and the wrappings?"
Jessica snorted. "That girl
Sineya? One of the few Guardians you could apparently find details on for some reason, although we are still not sure why?"
John grinned! "Yeah her! Sure most of her stuff was classified and I'm still researching which bits are fiction or accurate, but she was wearing full chest coverings AND a skirt! Even had wrappings on her arms and legs and stuff, so that is like DOUBLE dressed up or something!"
His sister chuckled. "She's basically wearing a bathing suit top and her body is muscles and sex appeal. If anything the damaged wrappings will just melt teenage boys WORSE than simply wearing less because it will keep teasing and taunting them. Some girls too, I don't doubt."
Eugh. "Growing up sounds gross. Everything is about sex appeal and acting 'cool' and stuff."
As she drove back towards already recovered streets, Jessica grinned towards him. "I'm going to remind you of this when your physical body hits puberty, you know."
Meh, age was just a number and lots of gooey chemicals and stuff. "Whatever. Anyway, it's not MY fault most of the Iron Golems look like that."
She shrugged. "If the Defenders are selected because of how well remembered they were, then attractive ones who acted against stereotypes are the ones most likely to be selected. Or I assume exaggerated and with 'enhanced facts', considering how some of those ladies were WAY too attractive to be real."
Uh. "No, their bodies and clothing and stuff should be pretty accurate to what they looked like at the peak moment of raw Belief and at the instant of their legendary actions. At least, from what my senses can tell… Some facts and stuff just have too much momentum and power behind them, far too much to be affected by local memories or thoughts. And it may display a body from a different part of their personal timeline if they are missing a limb or something, since the golem provides the needed material to fix that."
His sister slowed the car to a stop. "You are saying there are hundreds of women THAT attractive in this world?"
Yep. "MOST people here are going to be handsome or beautiful. Because again, the Belief thing and how most parents Believe their kids are beautiful and how popularity or righteousness equals hotness and all that."
His sister considered that.
John glanced into the mirrors of the car… Repaired or not this was still a rough part of town. So at least they weren't blocking traffic. "I think most bad guys and evil people are automatically ugly too, unless it is someone falling into the 'sexy bad boy' or 'hot bad girl' stereotype. Or 'attractive girl but no one notices because she is a nerd' tropes, and stuff like that."
She stared at nothing for a while… And shook her head. "Too bad about the literal portal to Hell and the massive amounts of evil in this place. Right, we're pretty much done here. Let's go buy you some future parking lots."
Woo! "I'm going to be able to park SO MANY CARS!"
~~~Pocket System~~~
"Well I'M not going to apply for this! You know how rough that side of town is!? I might need some spending cash, but I'd rather just wait for my second weekly allowance than risk going to the POOR area."
"But I mean, the pay sounds pretty good…"
"TOO good, suspicious as heck."
"Yeah, probably some sort of sicko looking for high schoolers."
Alexander 'Xander' Harris blinked at the small group crowding around the job listing board.
The area was normally absent of people except those in dire straits and lacking other options… People like him, for example. Considering his home life and the 'support' of his drunk parents, supplementing his income by doing quick/potentially risky/theoretically deadly jobs had been a needed stop gap measure for several months already.
Sure, it was risking his life… But unlike his 'part time defending the world' job with
Buffy, THESE risks actually earned him money and let him buy snacks or whatever.
Still: Why was 'his' job board suddenly popularity central?
Standing aside, he caught the attention of one of the socially outcast like himself. "Hey Greg, what's up with that mess?"
The guy huffed! "Hey Xander. Someone misfiled a job posting on the board, clearly got the salary wrong… It's way too high and has almost NO prerequisites or mandatory job history. Also says they are hiring a BUNCH of people…Cooks, custodians, guides, lifeguards, instructors, tutors, you name it! I'm pretty sure it's bullshit."
But you ALSO had one of the contact slips in your hand now, didn't you? "Sounds a bit crazy."
The boy relaxed slightly, assured that he had gotten away with it. "Yeah, I wouldn't bother messing with any of it, just wait till
Snyder comes by and rips it down so you don't get in trouble."
Yeah, this must be a DAMN good opportunity if Greg was getting this shifty. "Thanks for the heads up!"
The guy huffed. "Yeah, us dweebs gotta keep an eye out for each other." His hand gripped the paper slip even tighter. "See you later, Harris."
MmHmm. "You too, Greg."
As his classmate scampered off, Xander's eyes shifted to the still crowded mob next to the job posting board.
Either this was an awesome way to not run out of twinkies this month, or it was another world destroying monster or cursed artifact that needed to feed on the souls of children or… Whatever horrific thing needed handling this week.
One or the other, this was right up his alley. "Excuse me, coming through… Oh, was that YOUR foot? Pardon me, Xan-man coming through!"
Let's investigate a job opportunity, shall we?
~~~Pocket System~~~
John was now underground and overworked. "Look, my sister really wants your group to stay down here in Safe Harbor's 'adult swim' area, alright? Just for now! And I'd really appreciate it."
The more explicitly clothed golems mostly shrugged or flicked him off or bounced on their toes or… Well, there was a range of reactions, but the massive number of sexy nearly-or-actually nude iron women began moving towards the newest underground swimming area.
Because being nude or close to it was hopefully more socially acceptable if concentrated into a single swimming area. At least, that's what Jessica argued.
John personally thought that the new secondary pool with its age restricted swimming policy would be plenty enough to accomplish her requirements, but whatever.
The important bit now was that all the men and women golems out HERE had clothing. Mostly.
It was just annoying, since over 30% of the summoned defenders turned out to be compromised when it came to clothing integrity.
What was it about this Realm that caused SO MUCH clothing damage to defenders? Or was his sister right and he was doing this subconsciously somehow?
[[System does not detect any known influence or modification of needed Crafting recipes that would cause such a discrepancy during Iron Golem construction.]]
Well, whatever. In the end he just needed to keep making golems until he had enough non-explicit ones to properly protect the rest of the facilities down here.
That said? The Adult Swim area was VERY well defended now. From near anything. Sheesh.
Right. "Should I set up the baked good production machines now? I'm going to build the bakery an actual kitchen too, because why not, but those automated Essence Food construction blocks are going to need a bit of testing first."
Jessica was still staring at the departed women.
John hummed. "Some infinite water source blocks will handle the vast majority of our future material needs, but maybe I should also make something that generates Wheat itself and processes it into flour too… You know, so if we hire actual bakers or cooks or whatever, they can start making new stuff."
After all, with Essence versions of water and flour and milk and eggs and stuff? Well you could bake up a whole MESS of new dishes!
Jessica still stared at nothing. "Damn…"
Wait, was she drooling? "Sis?"
She jerked in place. "I'VE GOT THE SUNSCREEN!"
…Uh. "Good?"
The siblings stared at each other for a moment.
John coughed. "So… Set up the bakery machines now? Yes?"
She nodded firmly while blushing! "Yep, great idea, good, let's go do that now. Onwards!"
Right, let's automate some cooking equipment! John just had to make it so simple a high schooler could do it.
That shouldn't be TOO hard, right?
