This location technically didn't exist. Not as far as the local Realm was concerned, at least.
It wasn't a virtual conference room, or even located within the local Realm, this was more a massive box in his Pocket that sort of flowed on its own timeline that matched with the local Realm, and was ridiculously costly to keep operating like this… Practically 100% a waste of resources.
But it allowed him and his sister to interact with the new stuff without returning to the Realm directly and getting messed with by reality, and he NEEDED to be physically here for very important reasons, so the cost was fine. Fine, he said!
This was for a good cause, damn it!
John happily hummed while carefully chewing on the metallic shards from Batch 3320.
Mmm. "Can we get more of these ones? I think they came as big armor plates. I want like… A LOT of them."
Sure they were a tad tricky to snack on, what with the forces required potentially causing shrapnel to escape at lethal velocity if he chews with his mouth open, but they were so zesty!
His sister was still inventorying the massive amount of junk that Jeremiah had been delivering to them over the last few days while Temptation was out hunting again for Mister Sinister and Grace continued reexamining Pocket security modules, but she still paused her work to look up in confusion. "I'm sorry, what?"
John held up the fragmented armor chunk. "This stuff, the ablative armor layers or whatever this is, the armor plate segments from the Chitauri's invasions and whatnot? Let's ask Gramps to send me all he can find!"
Jessica blinked. "You want even more? We've already collected tons of that stuff! Literally tons, MOST of the Chitauri's vehicles and ships used it for defensive layers."
John crunched again with happiness before swallowing. "Yeah, but I've found that at least some of the taste comes from the History connected to the material. I can Craft new stuff easily, but it tastes bland without the reverberation of being forged and welded and used and all that."
He grabbed another sample fragment of material from the next pile… And winced. "Not that batch though, mark that batch for recycling. Not sure what it went through exactly, but a LOT of death and anger was involved compared to the rest so far."
Jessica blinked and checked the inventory logs. "Let me see… Batch 3321? Oh, it is some of the confiscated armor. I'll just set all worn materials and weaponry aside then?"
John nodded, wiping his mouth again. Eww. "Yeah, stuff that constantly comes in contact with the Chitauri directly on a constant basis? Let's just write ALL that off as a loss. The outer layers of ship and stuff basically only got handled during refits and repairs, it isn't soaked with mindless rage and murder and stuff despite being used in conflicts."
She nodded while pointing at a different block of material. "Want to try another 'sample' then? This stuff took longer to get than the Carbonadium and the reinforced prestressed fibrous steel, but it's pretty amazing material apparently."
Hmm? "Is this Vibranium?" He'd been REALLY looking forward to tasting that stuff!"
HIs sister sighed. "No, grandfather is having issues finding any samples of that stuff that people are actually willing to sell. This is
Adamantium, a US classified steel alloy that we were talking about earlier."
John blinked at the shimmering material. "Why'd it take longer than the rest if it's made here locally and out of something available like steel?" Steel was pretty common after all.
She sighed holding up her data tablet. "Getting it isn't THAT hard, getting it LEGALLY on the other hand? In the end, Gramps gave up and had Charlotte just have it delivered from the black market. Several samples from this recent batch came from those channels, but even WITH those methods Vibranium is proving elusive… Anyway, how's it taste?"
Dunno. Let's find out! "Om nom nom N͔̻͖̲̕͝o̶̖̟̜̖͚̣̥̼͔̝͜m͢͏̲̬̟͜͟͡!̱͖̬̭̪̻̟͘͡͠ͅ"
Ooh! "It tastes like endless stability!"
And sort of zingy? Like how when you chewed on aluminum foil, but with layers of Conceptual
infrangibility to it? "I'm glad it tastes so good even though I've gotten almost no History from it. I don't think this thing's been used before."
His sister nodded, holding up another oddly shaped blob. "This alloy is not only really hard to make and requires super classified compounds mixed together, but after eight minutes? It sets up and can't be worked with unless someone manually shifts the molecules one at a time, which isn't exactly cheap or easy to do."
She turned the odd object in her hands. "So if you make too much for your project? If there was a mistake or a blemish when forming it? A spillage or overflow? You end up with little blobs like this that are basically REALLY expensive and HIGHLY classified trash. Practically useless, but still highly restricted stuff."
Mmm. Something felt off about this treat. "Tasty trash though! And easy enough to work with, if all I have to do is just reshape the material on a molecular level, I think… Well, easy for us I mean, not for anyone else."
Hang on, that wasn't right. "System, craft me an ingot of this stuff please." A bar landed in his hand. "Thank you… Now, let's try this with a larger serving size."
"Om nom nom N͔̻͖̲̕͝o̶̖̟̜̖͚̣̥̼͔̝͜m͢͏̲̬̟͜͟͡!̱͖̬̭̪̻̟͘͡͠ͅ"
…Hmm.
John stared at the stuff and his frown deepened. "I can only eat this stuff here. In this Realm."
Jessica looked up from shifting material piles around. "What?"
He held up the bar. "The 'zingy' or 'zesty' flavor? It's from active conflict. The Concepts belonging to each of the composite materials that were used to make this alloy are attempting to destroy each other on a higher layer of interaction than normal reality."
Shit. "I won't even be able to snack on these things before they explode or evaporate small chunks of Reality or whatever when we leave this place. Damn it!"
Frantically pulling forth Crafted samples of other snacks… "Oh for crying out loud, ALL the zesty stuff has some amount of Conceptual conflict going on!"
This one too, and the glowing orange rocks, and the odd empowered liquid from one of the alien doo- bobs… "Crud, I think the reason this stuff has 'magical' properties and effects here is due to the Realm itself somehow allowing conflicting Concepts to just argue forever instead of instantly annihilating each other!"
His sister frowned. "Does this mean you won't be able to use this elsewhere on our travels?"
Meh. "Most of it will just degrade to a more stable state and become less impossibly awesome, but still good material… But the TASTE will be ruined! Except for the extreme stuff like Adamantium and probably Vibranium, that's going to be locked to Realms like this one where two conflicting realities can so easily overlap with only mild disagreements. DARN IT!"
Jessica considered that… And nodded. "Then we can reduce the shopping list we have with grandfather then. I'm sure your new sister will appreciate that at least."
Meh. "Charlotte's happy enough thanks to all the raw material we've been Crafting for her from scans of the expensive stuff she's been handing over… Though that won't work with Adamantium in this case, since we don't have the stuff used to make the alloy and can only Craft the material directly in the final form."
Maybe he could make a Crafting Chest to make stuff for her when they moved on? It'd have to be improved though, more interactive with an ability to design patterns for the finished Adamantium products to match… That could be a fun side project! Yeah, let's do that!
Happily chewing on the Adamantium sample, he began opening windows and interfaces… The new Crafting Chest could have holographic emitters easily enough, the Duel Monster Battle Stadium hardware was a massive cheat in this case, saved a WHOLE bunch of work and…
"John?"
Hmm? "Yes sis?"
Jessica had set aside her materials and tablet. "About our next 'test Transfer', to test our readjusted security modules? And about all the issues we ran into THIS time, with this test?"
He didn't flinch.
She sat next to him, pulling him into a hug. "Do you want to talk about it?"
…No. "Yeah."
He just sat there for a bit, feeling her willing to wait for him to find the words… "I'm not really worried about our next trip I guess. I trust Grace and Temptation to fix everything, get all the new settings right in my modules and stuff… But about when I first got here…"
Even as he was drugged on that medical table, things had felt wrong for some reason. "Something about how I integrated into Grampa, about how confused and… It felt off I guess. Never really felt right again until we separated and I pushed him out of my Soul Network Mesh entirely, and stuff."
Jessica blinked at that revelation and pulled back a little to see him better. "Even back then? Why didn't you say anything?"
Because they were counting on him to run this 'test run'. "I didn't want to give up. To fail."
John gripped his metallic snack a bit harder. "I should have called everything off when I had issues focusing, when I was fading in and out of character, when I had to 'sleep' to allow me to get this whole mess to work."
The thought burned inside, the feeling of shame. "But if I gave up, like a wimp, and just… We all worked so hard to get this security module test set up and ready, and I didn't want it all to fall apart just because I had a few issues…"
She hummed. "You know we expected problems from the beginning, yes? And that, if you told us to call it off, that would only be expected so we could fix stuff, right?"
He winced. "I… It felt like if I admitted that I wanted to stop, that I wasn't being good enough. That I had failed everyone who was working so hard to help me get better."
Her hug tightened. "Never, little brother. John, getting sick, being hurt, feeling scared… All of that isn't a bad thing. It's nothing to feel guilty for, nothing to blame yourself over. Sometimes life makes something a bit complicated, outside of our expectations… But even if none of this had gone off the rails, even if everything had played out as expected?"
She pulled him close. "We'd still stop anytime you felt things were going to be too much to handle, and that would be alright. You know I and your girls are here for you. That we just want to help you, and make sure your modules are protecting you like they should."
John didn't sniffle. "Thanks, sis."
Jessica nodded. "Now, I want you to promise me that NEXT time, when we arrive at the next Realm, you will tell me or the girls IMMEDIATELY if something feels wrong or off, alright? After all, the System is part of YOU, and those feelings are important! They may even be subtle warnings that some larger problem is going on, and if you tell us we might catch issues before anything can happen and keep you safe… So, tell us if something feels wrong, or bad, or whatever alright?"
Yeah, alright. "Okay… I promise. Sorry."
She rocked them both slightly side to side. "You have nothing to be sorry about! Everyone needs to talk about stuff every now and then, about worries and fears and all that. Learning when to rely on yourself and when to ask for help, well that's just part of growing up… And honestly, I've had issues reaching out for help myself more than once or twice in the past too, you know?"
John couldn't help but snort. "It must be a family thing, Grandpa's got a whole LIFETIME of doing it all himself because he thought everyone else would muck it up or something. Until Charlotte, I mean."
Jessica grinned back at him. "See? Now, onto a different but also important topic: The next 'Transfer Test'. Did you read Grace's thoughts on what we should do for this next run?"
That massive dozen paged document? Yeah. Sigh. "I think we aim towards another green node for stability, but as for the method of Transfer… I guess we need to do [[Incarnation]] again?"
She shook her head. "No, we can wait if you don't feel like it. There are other options after all…"
No, then he'd feel tempted to put it off again and again. "It's fine, we can just follow Grace's suggestions and it should fix the issues we had THIS time."
Basically, her advice was to pre-select a bunch of answers to theoretical questions the Realm might ask before showing up. Make the Transfer process fast and near automatic, rather than hang around yelling at reality while making decisions.
Sure this was going to be a little annoying, since the exact questions wouldn't be known in advance and that meant John had to fill in a bunch of THEORETICAL stuff, but it would be better than letting all of existence use him like a chew toy. "First of all, I don't want to Incarnate into anyone while their Soul is still there. I'd like to wait at least an hour or so, I'm pretty sure the near instant replacement after death experience was what caused so many issues when I got here and became grandpa."
His sister nodded. "Reasonable… And make sure to specify that your new body should be mostly undamaged. Not smashed or evaporated or anything like that, please."
Oh, good point! "I'm pretty sure we can get away with a full Body scan and Craft a fixed up duplication as long as the Realm isn't looming over our backs this time, but that would prevent a LOT of hassle."
She gave him that look again. "AND prevent you from feeling all that pain when trying to Incarnate as a fragmented person, right?"
Huh? "Oh! No, Grace told me she found that possible issue this time, I won't be actually possessing the new Body until my Pocket fixes them up entirely. It just simplifies the whole 'going undercover thing' if I don't have to explain regenerating limbs and stuff to the locals."
Jessica blinked and raised a hand. "Hold up."
Uh. "Yes?"
She stared at him. "Are you saying you COULD have been forced to incarnate into someone HERE that was in a WORSE situation than Jeremiah Wilks dying on an operating table?"
Oops. "Well not anymore! Grace fixed that! AND if I end up being cut open again, from now ON I won't feel the entire thing too! Problem solved!"
She froze. "What do you mean, 'feel the entire thing'?"
Huh? "Well, when I first became Jeremiah here, I was mostly just a Soul and Mind you know? His Body was drugged up, but while it was connecting I could still feel the lingering pain of his Soul passing away six times and of course you know how damaged those memories were and… Uh… I mean, I passed out before the pain got TOO bad and…"
His sister did NOT look happy. "It's FINE! Don't worry about it, Grace fixed those settings and all that, it won't happen next time!" Shit, this wasn't working.
This was why he asked Grace not to tell sis about that mess in the FIRST place! It wasn't a big deal! "ANYWAY, back to my list of Transfer requirements, alright? Got a lot more to do, right?"
Jessica took a calming breath in… And out. "How did the System not TELL us, me OR the girls, that you were feeling that sort of pain at the time?"
Ah, that. "Because reality expected the 'dying' Jeremiah Wickles to be feeling such pain, and part of my security and privacy modules were set to ensure I matched so we'd go undetected and… Look, it doesn't matter any more, alright? Grace fixed it, let's move on."
She held back a growl, which… Was probably the best he could get right now. Fair enough. "Anyway! Let's uh… Let's go over my next [[Insertion]] requirements for now, alright?"
Grumbling, his sister pulled him into an even more massive hug. "Just… I'm so sorry, John."
It… It was fine. Sniff. "We… We aren't going to get anything done like this."
She didn't shift an inch. "The samples and stuff can wait, my brother is more important."
Sniff.
