Think ot the choice between ships and mechs this way.
The navy is a shield around our territory.
Loss of mechs makes the shield overall weaker, but leaves no holes, while loosing ships does not overall weaken the shield, but creates holes in it.
But replacing mechs is faster, and you can reshuffle them between ships, allowing for strengthening that shield in specific locations, while loss of ships takes longer, leaving you more vulnerable to surprise pinpoint attacks.

Ships also allow our side to hit further, while additional mechs allow us to hit harder.
It does not matter how hard we can hit, if enemy can sit outside the range of our ability to hit them.
And mechs can be reshuffled if needed, and can be replaced in smaller chunks, even if full recovery would take similar length of time, than ships.

Let me put it in a way everyone can understand then.

What happens to ships without air cover in a post aviation setting?

They die in droves, that's what. Better to have an overstrength mech screen and fewer warships than to have an anemic screen with too many ships to cover, when the other side will have their own mechs to deploy.

Mechs without ships are not very useful outside stationary defenses, and even then ships can outrange them with heavier weapons.
Ships without mechs can act as couriers, scouts, transport.
And mechs can be shuffled between ships to provide screen where it is needed, and are faster to rebuild than ships.

As for the analogy of planes and ships.
Carriers take several years to build, planes, can be cranked out from a factory assembly line.

But here's the issue.

All those long term considerations are moot because the crisis is right now.

I'm going to presume that "ships are lost" isn't going to be asshole genied into "and because of that, you functionally lost a lot of your mechs too nerds" when we're explicitly taking mechs as a surviving asset.

Wow you folks really want to kill off a princess

Huh, nevermind, this thread grew three pages between my loading a page and posting.

Yeah, assuming that losing our ships means that our mecha will be useless is assuming that Gazeteer will be a dick QM. When she so far hasn't been.

I mean, change the sentence to a prince and it would be correct (if somewhat out of our reach by now).

The usurper is not an emperor, after all.

I hope this update has the knock on effect of lighting a fire under Kei's ass.

Please don't count on it, I'm super lame and less good than @Gazetteer .

Yeah, but it's still been about a month since the last update.
(Kei I don't pay you, just ignore this)

It's fine, we all know I'm a hack~

Kei's updated like twice since I put out my last one!

That last one. You update more frequently than me usually.

This thread is a no putting Kei down zone, that means you.

I'm the only one you can call a hack in here

In the interests of getting to work and updating in a timelier fashion this time, calling the vote here.

It's a Mecha anime, not a ship anime. Let's not let our Bridge Bunny POV distract us from what truly matters.

The only way I can think of us losing morale is if we lose the princess, and i really don't want that to happen.

Since we didn't choose to not loose a bunch of mecha, does this mean Perbeck's subordinates are going to die again?
... Darn it, at least one of them are, aren't they?

At this point Lori is probably as cursed as the Rose, only instead of taking cripling damage herself it's everyone around her.

The vote is already locked, but luckily for you the plan you voted for won.

Also, another way I could see morale fail would be massive civilian casualties. Which also would've been doupleplus-ungood.

o_O Omegahugger suggested 'massive civilian casualties' as an alternative explanation for massive morale damage.
Also pretty sure the princess is on the flagship, either a battleship or capital sized carrier.
If you like, I can have stray ordinance from the battle ended up on a collision course with a civilian habitat, which is an increasing concern the closer in to the more densely inhabited parts of Saturn's orbit they get.

I love this story and it's written so well but goddamn every choice is heart-wrenching. I so love how much thought you obviously put into it all.

Guys and gals, I just had a terrible thought!

Remember how we said that sacrificing our mecha wouldn't kill Gloriana, because that would be a dick move? Well, you know whose also flying around in a mecha and is a much more vulnerable non-love interest side character? OWUSU! There's a non-zero chance that our actions just killed off the resident bestboy (suck it Mazlo), and worst of all I hadn't even realised it before now!

Okay, calm down Omegahugger. Nothing has happened, the update has not been released yet. There's still a chance the empathic 'this is war' casualty will be someone less important to you like J6. As long as Owusu has not picked up any deathflags recently he is going to be fi-
