Pathfinder/RWBY: You Call That a God? A Summoner in Remnant Quest

New Bonds of Sisterhood
- You're Nora's sister
"So what was your favourite part of the movie?" Nora asks, barely managing to stay still in the queue for whatever this food stand was selling.

You were back in the park which was now full of people. There were children running around and yelling, adults with dogs on leashes or just walking around in small groups.

Ren had stepped into the airship dock to organise your passage to Beacon while Maria had mumbled something and just vanished, leaving the two of you alone.

"Either Maneki shutting up the Nameless by figuring out its name or that councilor getting called out for getting son many people killed, even if his final fate was a bit... over the top." You say, shuddering when you remember the Nameless's chief weapon - a beam of light that slowly disintegrated that victim. Form the man's screams, it was a painful process.

"Right? I knew Sheen Bean was going to die the moment he showed up, but they really made us wait for it. I was half convinced he was going to survive!" Nora responds. "And the boxer mech-suit was so cool! I almost want to try some grenade-gauntlets myself!" She adds, punching her fists together.

"Would that be safe?" You ask, trying to imagine punching an explosion. It must be painful.

"Sure, if I braced my wrist and was really careful about the explosives. But Ren wouldn't like it and I'm already used to Magnhild." Nora says dismissively. "Maybe I'll try if at Beacon. Their forges are better than any you'll find outside of Atlas."

You shrug noncommittally, still not sure how the local weaponry worked. Your bow was all you needed.

"If we're going to be sisters, there are a few questions you need to answer." You ask, having made your decision a while ago.

Here in a new world, with new rules, it only made sense to find a new way forwards. Your people's ways were best for your home, but Remnant was different. Not as different as you'd feared, but different all the same.

And if the choice was between claiming to follow the ways of bandits, dead or strange strangers or someone you know you can trust in a fight, it wasn't a choice at all.

"Wait, so we're going to be..." Nora says excitedly.

"Yes." You say.

Nora screams in happiness and grabs you in a crushing hug, almost shaking you as she jumps in excitement.

"Xanthe! This is great! I've never had a sister before." She says happily.

"Neither have I." You say. "But I think I know the most important question to ask - are you and Ren partners?"

Nora immediately lets go you and looks away.

"Hopefully we'll be partners at Beacon. It's just been us for so long, and I know now it's all three of us but me and Ren - we've always been together, but not together-together. I mean, it'd be really great if we were, but it'd also be really weird and might ruin everything. Sure I've got you now, and Drakōn I guess, but that isn't the same." She says quickly, blushing as she considers her words.

"So you don't need me to go on evening hunts or sleep particularly deep to give you some alone time?" You ask, amused by her reaction.

"No. No we don't." Nora says.

"Why not?" You press with a vicious smile. It's been a while since you were around anyone so nervous about their feelings. Your people didn't really tolerate this sort of uncertainty. Either you seize the moment and your love or the elders start meddling.

And considering how they've been trying to 'help' you for the last five moons, that's not a fate you'd wish on anyone.

"He's a good fighter, he's calm in a crisis, knows how to cook, smells nice. If you don't want him I might." You say with a smirk. "A man that's shorter than me would be a nice change. Even if it's only by half an inch."

"You wouldn't." Nora hisses, her face pale.

"No, I wouldn't. But someone will." You agree.

"I don't know. What if he says no?" Nora asks as her blush returns.

"Then he's a fool. And he wouldn't say no." You say reassuringly.

"How can you know that?" Nora asks pleadingly.

"I've seen it happen. Again and again, all my life. When there's only a dozen shared tents, you pick up on a lot." You say with a shrug.

"Right." Nora says, obviously not wanting to talk about this any further.

"So, how did we meet Ren? Did we grow up in the same village?" You ask, deciding to move on.

"Oh, uh, no. Mom ditched me-us when we were kids and we met Ren a week later." Nora says, glancing around and relaxing when she's sure no one's paying attention.

"She ditched you?" You ask, trying not to start yelling. "You mean she died or got imprisoned or enslaved right?"

"No. We were traveling and I threw a tantrum. Because of me the Grimm attacked us and nearly killed us. We got away alive but lost everything else. Mom didn't want to risk it happening again." Nora says quietly.

"That 's no excuse." You snarl. "How did you survive?"

"I panicked and followed a river. I followed it to Ren's village and..." She trails off, struggling to say what comes next.

"Where you met Ren. The villagers took you in but the Grimm destroyed it soon after, leaving you and Ren to fend for yourselves. And now you and Ren want to make sure it never happens to anyone else, ever again." You finish, able to guess from what you haven't been told about their families.

"They didn't take me in. I had to steal food and I slept in a drain. But yeah." Nora says softly.

"It isn't theft if you're starving and you only take food. It's hunting. Erastil himself would agree." You say resolutely. "God of the hunt, the harvest and community. He taught us archery when the world was young." You add when Nora gives you a questioning look.

You pause and think about the other things you've seen be important to siblings.

"How old are you?" You ask. Seniority and size were both constant signs of superiority back home and you were definitely taller, though she was more muscular.

"Seventeen. I don't know exactly when my birthday is, so I just put down the ninth of February. It was the New Year when Ren asked and I didn't realise it changes." Nora answers.

"I'm also seventeen. Born when the Flood Moon was waning. Which is Gozran which is..." You trail off, trying to remember the local months.

'The middle of April. She's older than you, born at the start of Snappe.' Drakōn tells you.

"April." You finish.

"Oh, we'll be twins then. And since I'm older, I say we were born in February. That way we don't have to wait as long to turn eighteen." Nora decides.

"Does eighteen matter?" You ask.

"It's when we're adults and get to drive." Nora says, cackling as she imagines it. "I'm definitely getting a monster truck."

"I have a dinosaur." You note smugly. "I'll be calling myself Xanthe Valkyrie then?"

"If we're twins you probably should. Parents can choose to give kids different last names but most twins have the same name. But it's up to you." Nora answers reassuringly.

You nod, considering the idea. You weren't exactly attached to Scythia - you'd inherited it from your grandfather but it was his deed name. He was an expert with his scythe, an accomplished warrior and devotee of Magdh. She was one of the Eldest, those fey that had achieved godhood. She was the patron of the norns and any who tried to divine the future. Supposedly a prophecy had led him to your people and he never said anything of his past.

You were always meant to set his name aside when you earned your own. Technically you already had, but whether God Caller was a proper deed name or if it should be something more poetic was a debate you'd left to the elders. Drakōn hadn't been any help, instead focusing on the mysterious prophecy that had led your grandfather north.

Not that you knew what it was.

"Favourite colour?" You ask, switching to a different track.

"Pink, obviously. Is yours red?" Nora asks, jabbing at your cheek.

"No, blue. Favourite food?" You say, gesturing at your clothes.

"Pancakes. Pancakes and waffles. And eggs and bacon. I kind of just love breakfast, but especially pancakes with syrup." Nora says as you reach the end of the line. "Oh, and cotton candy. Try some."

You take the odd pink fluff from her with some trepidation, blinking as you all but inhale it.

"Sweet." You say, more than a little surprised.

"Right? Anyway, about your bow." Nora begins as you walk away from the stall, devouring the sticky treat.

Your second trip on an airship is much longer. You manage to sleep some of it away, but who do you talk to?
[ ] Maria, about the ones who hunted her down
[ ] Nora, about her plans for the future
[ ] Ren, about how he met Nora.

A/N: Two or three updates until we hit Beacon I think.

Xanthe: "Nora, I have this ritual I want to show you. Can you get Ren?"
Nora: "What type of ritual is it? Oooh, can you make it rain syrup?!"
Xanthe: "I'm doing a marriage ritual to bind your and Ren's two fates together."

What about aura? Can her's be unlocked?
I've been dodging that for a while since Ren and Nora don't know how to do it (both unlocked their auras by triggering their semblances for the first time) and don't have Scrolls with fancy aura detectors, but I'm leaning towards 'yes and it's weird'.

Aura could easily be an explanation for high level fighters and barbarians but obviously isn't known on Golarion like it is on Remnant. Different techniques would lead to different results and I think widespread magic should influence aura, but I'm not 100% yet.

It's definitely easier to say Xanthe has her aura unlocked but semi-inactive so you don't get a super easy power boost.

Let's grill our new sister's maybe but hopefully boyfriend!

Hit points are sort of a strange counterpart to Aura in any case, being as how you don't need to worry about bleeding to death or getting broken bones or whatever as a D&D character and you can recover from injury pretty fast. Almost to the point you could sell the idea everyone in D&D has something like Aura already. There are a few differences like Semblances that are probably worth exploring though.

[X] Ren, about how he met Nora.

There are the 2e variant rules about Stamina that seem to fit Aura pretty well: relatively easy to recover if you have a moment out of combat, but not affected by explicit healing magic.

[X] Maria, about the ones who hunted her down

Let's figure out more about the threats of this world.

Between Stamina, Barbarian Rages, the ability of Rangers, Rogues, Monks and Fighters to pick up varying forms of magic, the things Alchemists can do that RAW don't involve magic and just high level martials getting to be full on anime, there's a lot of room for aura existing on Golarion without anyone noticing / everyone calls it something different.

Barbarian Rages especially have interesting implications - growing to the size of a giant, growing claws or horns, channeling the breath weapon of a dragon, summoning the spirits of your ancestors or manifesting anti-magic via fury happens again and again across Golarion. It could be because of the muddled ancestry of everyone on Golarion, but it could be something else.

Yeah, the simplest explanation for Aura on Golarion is that the baseline supernatural forces that give Golaion's heroes their durability and extraordinary but non-magical powers are the same thing as Aura, just manifested differently.

After all, a level 10 gnome less than 3 feet in height might well be able to survive being trampled by an angry mammoth, repeatedly. Not much different from Aura force fields except the layer is under the skin, rather than over it.

Might be an adaptation to the fact that soul-eating outsiders are more common on Golarion, so going around wearing your soul externally might not be wise.

Edit: I now wonder if Xanthe's first reaction to learning what Aura is, as a veteran of the Wirldwound, will fall under 'what kind of mad people push their souls out where anything can see them? That's like hanging a steak from your chest as armour if you ever meet a proper demon!'

In terms of power, the Mammoth Lords that lead the various followings tend to fall between levels 8-12. The Mammoth lords and similarly elite members of the Watching Wolf tend towards the higher end of that scale because you were one of the groups constantly fighting any demons that tried going west instead of east, but those that ventured into the Worldwound to fight the demons on their own turf and the crusaders/reclaimers trend a bit higher.

Nenio and the other companions of the Knight Commander of the 5th Crusade are of course level 20 with various levels of mythic power, but they won't be too relevant because they're kind of gamebreaking.

She'll go through a period of disbelief first but that's one reaction Xanthe could have. Depends on how she finds out about it.

DnD demons aren't actually particularly good at dealing with soul magic... It may kill any chance at stealth a hunter may have had though because yeah they can sense souls on some level.

Necromancy and the undead seem like a bigger problem in terms of using Aura the way they do in RWBY.

Like, I wouldn't guarantee 'Vampiric Touch' would be more effective, but it wouldn't surprise me. And incorporeal undead that drain stats or levels on touch are pretty common.

Questions in Transit
Ren, about how he met Nora.
You hadn't realised before that Beacon was in another land before, never mind another continent. But apparently it is and the airship flight there demands additional security.

Ren accepts your chosen identity with a silent nod before guiding your group through the security checks and onto the airship.

This airship is larger than the last one and filled with seating. Apparently a lot of people fly here from the kingdom of Mistral and continue on to Vale - or vice versa. And from what Maria says, most of them don't leave the dock.

You soon find yourself in a seat next to a small, oddly layered window, with Ren next to you and Nora in the aisle, Maria having claimed a seat elsewhere due to her age.

You watch Anima go by the window as the airship takes off, half listening to Nora's excited chatter about Beacon that abruptly turns into silence when she falls asleep.

"So, Ren." You begin, keeping your voice low. "I need to go over a few things with you about your past."

"Our past." He corrects you, his voice even quieter. "Go ahead."

"Are you and Nora together?" You ask, not wanting to immediately ask about what is probably the worst day of his life.

From his surprised reaction he apparently thought you would.

"No, we're not." He says after a moment.

"So you're siblings?" You ask, already knowing how Nora feels.

Ren gives you a blank look as he thinks.

"No, we're not." He eventually answers.

You nod, letting him think about that.

"Nora told me about our mother and meeting you in a village. And while I can guess what happened, if I was there I need to know a little more." You ask.

"It was a town, not a village. Kuroyuri was built by people who wanted to leave Mistral behind and build something better. My parents really believed in it." Ren begins.

His people were embracing Erastil's teachings? A noble calling that your people took to its proper conclusion.

"But it wasn't perfect. The townsfolk had disagreements about how to handle outsiders - whether they were travelers, huntsmen or unfortunate kids like Nora. There were probably other issues, but I didn't know about them." Ren continues. "We'd always had trouble with Grimm, but usually managed to see them off. There was even a retired Huntsmen living there.

"Then the same day I met Nora, something changed. A powerful Grimm ripped through the defenses in minutes and started the to pick us off one by one, with the lesser Grimm following it preventing anyone from getting away. We were the only survivors." Ren says solemnly.

"How? Were you two not in town when it happened?" You ask, easily able to imagine the destruction. You'd come across too many ruined Sarkorian villages in the last year.

"No. My Semblance activated for the first time. It hid us from the Grimm for long enough for us to get away." Ren says, looking at Nora as he speaks.

"And ever since it's just been the two of you." You finish.

Ren nods with a faint smile.

"It was hard at first. But we got through it together." He says.

"That's how it's meant to go." You agree. "Whether you look to the pack, the herd or the forest - working together means we're all better off."

You pause, trying to figure out your next question.

"The Grimm that destroyed your town. Is it still out there? Or would it have died by now?" You ask, not sure what the possibilities were.

"I don't know." Ren says, his face unreadable.

"Once we graduate we could find out. Hunt it down, make sure its dead and maybe try rebuilding your home." You suggest.

"Maybe." Ren says noncommittally.

You shrug and decide to move on.

"So how do people end up... together here." You ask, trying to remember the right words. "My father carved my mother's lineage into a smilodon fang and gave it to her. Apparently he was so anxious after that he didn't manage to hunt anything until she made him a bracelet from mammoth fur and twigs."

"You ask them to go on a date and see what happens from there." Ren says, elaborating when you raise an eyebrow.

"So if you wanted to ask Nora out on a date you'd go somewhere with nice food then go fight something afterwards." You say when he's finished.

"Maybe." Ren says, just barely frowning as he considers it.

"Something for you to think about. Because with us spending four years at Beacon, someone will ask Nora out if you don't." You point out.

Ren gives you an odd look at that, as if he'd never considered the idea before.

Upon arriving in Vale you have two days before needing to submit your application to Beacon and needing to prove you meet their standards. What do you do with your spare time?
The four most popular options will be chosen
[ ] Discuss the spell that sent you here with Drakōn and try to figure out why summoning him feels different
[ ] Get Ren and Nora used to the effects of your magic
[ ] Investigate Dust, whatever it is
[ ] Sort through Nenio's books and figure out exactly what you have
[ ] Talk to Maria and find out why she was targeted
[ ] Try and learn a destructive spell - Acid Arrow is excellent against a single target, but all you have for groups is Burning Hands, a spell with a limited range.
[ ] Try and learn an enhancing spell - Bull's Strength is always useful, but you've almost mastered Enlarge and could use more variety
[ ] Try and learn a summoning spell - you can summon animals other than Drakōn and learning to summon elementals or fey should be fairly easy.

A/N: I can't believe I stuck the votes in a spoiler box two votes ago and no one pointed it out. As always, ask any questions you have.

[X] Try and learn a summoning spell - you can summon animals other than Drakōn and learning to summon elementals or fey should be fairly easy.

This is the most useful spell we could have given our limited spell selection. Fey in particular have all sorts of useful SLAs that I imagine would be rather OCP to the locals and since I do not imagine many of them are carrying around cold iron they should be surprisingly sturdy as well for their level

[X] Get Ren and Nora used to the effects of your magic

We are trying to sell that we are related to one of these people, if they react with shock to a normal part of our powers this will raise questions, plus it is just good adventuring courtesy not to freak out your party members

[X] Investigate Dust, whatever it is

We should look into potentially more esoteric side of the local cosmology so we do not get OCP-ed ourselves

[X] Sort through Nenio's books and figure out exactly what you have

It is rather odd to be lugging around stuff we do not know anything about, they might even be dangerous depending on what protections are on them.
