Damn, a tree name would be really good for what i'm thinking about for themes, but that'd mean Ilia is the leader. Which doesn't make a lot of sense and would guarantee her and Weiss trying to kill each other within a week.


Exactly, my cousins only turn 21... hah, 21 times in total. And now there's only two left and I don't get to see the family all that often. I love living on my own but when I'm in a different city it limits the amount of normal family gatherings I can make.

This feels a bit more pertinent, and we can get Pyrrha and Ilia's specific opinions on her later. And it'd be better to clear Weiss' grievances sooner, rather than later so they don't fester.

Weiss is the immediate problem, as the one who left in frustration. Making at least some headway on dealing with her issues should buy us time to deal with Illia, who in my opinion is the other ticking timebomb. While I want to help Pyrrha as much as anyone, her issues will not immediately blow up in our face and might even partially solve themselves given time. Especially if we get the other two to chill for a bit.

Let's at least try to talk to the ticking time bomb before trying to take on the more subtle emotional baggage the other team members are carrying.
 
Nothing like watching alerts pop up as people go through the quest and then vote when they catch up.

    For a moment you're tempted to leave Weiss alone. To instead focus on getting to know your other teammates and getting their advice, both as the leader of this team and as a student with no idea what to expect of a school.

    But that would be foolish. Letting frustration simmer and grow into resentment and hate is never the right move. You need to handle this now. Whether Weiss want to talk to you or not.

    So you follow her through the dormitory halls to a courtyard and give her a minute to collect herself before making your presence known.

    Weiss is gazing thoughtfully up at the moon as you push the door shut, the sound making her jump in response. She twirls and frowns when she sees you.

    "What do you want?" She asks, her irritation barely audible.

    "Why do you dislike me?" You ask bluntly. When she hesitates you continue. "I've never spoken to you before today, never seen you before yesterday. Nora and Ren haven't said anything about you. But when we met today you made your feelings clear. And you've only gotten angrier after the fight."

    Weiss sniffs and straightens up, doing her best to match your natural height.

    "Of course you didn't notice. I had the displeasure of sitting across from you at dinner last night. And at breakfast this morning." She says haughtily.

    You can't help but frown and tilt your head in confusion. From what you remember she's telling the truth but that doesn't exactly explain anything.

    "You eat like a child, smearing your food all over your face and clothes then wipe it off on whatever is handy." She adds angrily.

    "That's it?" You ask, considering what she said. You hadn't cared to notice before, but when you think about your last week's worth of meals... Even when Nora drowned her pancakes in syrup she stayed cleaner then you did. Probably because she used the metal cutlery that came with every meal.

    "That was my first impression of you. An uncultured brute with no awareness of where she is or who she's with. And just when I think I could be wrong, you prove me right!" Weiss continues.

    "Because the only reason I wouldn't know how to read is because I'm a barbarian?" You ask, unimpressed. You've seen this arrogance dozens of times, always from people who believe the only correct way to live is theirs.

    "That's not what I meant." Weiss immediately says, sighing before continuing. "Beacon is the best of the Huntsmen Academies. I've been studying and training under the best possible teachers for years to come here. And here you are, my illiterate and uneducated leader." She says, the frustration quickly returning to her voice.

    "It's possible to learn without reading a book." You point out, holding up your hand when Weiss goes to respond. She clearly needs to hear all of this. "And I'm not the first student to attend Beacon who doesn't know how to read. They've given me a year to learn. A year of extra lessons and certain allowances. Then any issues I have are my problem."

    "So you're not dyslexic or..." Weiss trails off, hesitant to continue.

    "I don't know what that is. I don't know how to read because there was never a need for me to learn." You say.

    Weiss considers that for a moment before visibly moving on.

    "Good. I'm certain the teachers know what they're doing. But that doesn't explain why they made you the leader. If it was Pyrrha I could understand, but you?" Weiss asks. Finally, the real problem.

    "Pyrrha is an excellent warrior. That doesn't make her a good leader." You point out.

    "Then why not me? I've studied, I've trained, I've done everything I was meant to. As a Huntress and as the heiress to the Schnee Dust Company. What did you do to make you worthier?" Weiss demands.

    "It doesn't matter what you're going to inherit. I studied and trained as well. I fought all my life just to keep me and mine alive. And now that I have Drakōn I have to be more. To be better." You snap, barely keeping yourself from talking about the following. "But that doesn't make me worthier than you. Leadership isn't about what you deserve. The only thing that matters is which of us will do a better job."

    "Which is you." Weiss says skeptically.

    "That's what the teachers decided. But if you think that they made a mistake, prove it. If you're a better leader than me I will swallow my pride and do all I can to learn from you." You declare. "But all you've done so far is make me wonder what will happen if Ilia or Pyrrha fail to meet your personal standard."

    Weiss gives you a disbelieving look that turns contemplative as you stare defiantly at her.

    "Maybe I've been acting inappropriately. You clearly expected to be made leader but that wasn't your choice." She admits.

    You accept this with a nod, knowing you need to push her to get her to admit to anything more.

    "What experience do you have as a leader? On or off the battlefield?" You ask.

    It takes Weiss a moment to answer, obviously needing to think about what would count.

    "You said your family runs a dust company. Surely you've helped run a caravan or a store." You point out.

    "A Dust company? The SDC is the Dust company. We're the largest producer and exporter of Dust on the planet and our Dust is of the highest quality." Weiss brags before giving you a disbelieving look. "How have you not heard of us?" She asks.

    "Dust is expensive. Too expensive for me to pay it any attention. Maybe the arrows I bought for the Initiation came with an informational pamphlet, but I couldn't read it." You explain.

    "Still. You must seen ads, unless you were a Luddite or..." Weiss says, cutting herself off as you wait for her to finish her sentence.

    "That doesn't matter." You say when she doesn't continue. "What does matter is the your own family clearly didn't give you leadership experience."

    "Not exactly." Weiss agrees.

    "I have had experience. In and out of battle. So until you prove yourself the better leader, I expect you to act appropriately." You say.

    "Of course I will." Weiss says with a determined look.

    "Good. Because if you throw a tantrum like this on the battlefield, you won't like the consequences." You say bluntly, turning to go back inside. You hear Weiss start saying something before catching herself, smiling when she catches up to you. "As the heiress of the Schnee Dust Company you'd be an expert on dust, yes?" You ask, as if nothing had happened.

    "Of course." Weiss says.

    "And you obviously know all about what we'll be learning in class." You continue.

    "I always get top marks." Weiss agrees, happy to be talking about her favourite subject.

    "Then I'll be counting on you to help me and the others learn. Pyrrha is the best fighter, I'm the best hunter and Ilia," You pause and consider what you've seen. "is stealthy and fast, excelling at hit and run attacks and at ambushes. We all bring something to the team, and part of being a good leader is recognising everyone's strengths and weaknesses."

    "Well obviously." Weiss responds. "And I'll be glad to help you when you run into difficulties with reading as well."

    The two of you aren't friends yet. But Weiss shouldn't be a problem unless you screw up.

    Your first week of classes are largely focused on establishing the curriculum and the preexisting knowledge of the students. You quickly find yourself in a simpler class for English and Maths along with several sessions where Professor Hickory focuses only learning how to read.

    This means there's plenty of time for you to get to know your team and your sibling. Siblings? You aren't sure what to call Ren, though he'll clearly be your brother soon enough. You're essentially saying the three of you were in the same following or tribe as kids, but there's no word for that in Taldan. What a useless language.

    What do you focus on with your team?

    [ ] Learning with Weiss - Weiss apparently took your words to heart and is eager to teach you all about dust and how to use it safely. Maybe just worried about her extensive personal supply that she has to keep in the dorm room. Either way you need to learn more about dust and need to figure out how to get more of it.
    [ ] Training with Pyrrha - Pyrrha is undoubtedly the best warrior in your year and she maintains that status with plenty of extra training. She's perfectly happy for you to tag along on her early morning sessions and it's a good chance for you to talk to her without anyone else around.

    What to you talk to Ren and/or Nora about?
    [ ] Family - You took the name of Nora's family and you're saying she's your sister, but that doesn't make it true. There's an adoption ritual you know, one that can easily be adjusted for this situation. And even if your using her name, Nora could clearly benefit from your family.
    [ ] Magic - they're both curious about magic and you can't stand that the only two people at beacon who know about magic are this ignorant about it. It's a basic part of the world, how could they be so blind? Teach them about magic, maybe teach them some if they've got a gift.

    A/N: The next update will be setting up a normal turn, but this lets me handle some introductory stuff. It'll also have rolls again because it makes more sense to have those results come up when I prompt you to decide how much time you spend on schoolwork vs other stuff.

    Obviously this isn't a perfect result, but its the best you'll get when Weiss isn't sure if Xanthe was literally raised by wolves and Xanthe is at best thinking of her as a spoiled noble brat.

    I highly reccomend you go see the D&D movie that just came out. It's great fun and really captures the vibe of playing D&D or Pathfinder.

    That went surprisingly well. Weiss usually can be kinda-sorta reasoned with I guess and getting to her before she's dug her heels in completely helped.

    As much as we need to learn about Dust, we now need to establish rapport with Ilia and Pyrhha, plus Nora and Ren are separated, those two went through a traumatic experience as kids and have most likely developed co-dependency, being separated like this won't do well for hteir mental states.
