"And then everything changed and both of them changed and Eleanore got her damn monkey and we didn't go adventuring with Jean Jacques anymore and… I tried to make it up with Marzipan years later, but then she went and…"
What's up with the monkey? Did it allow Eleanore to "bleed off" her Evil impulses in a harmless fashion? Did it brainwash her into her current anti-Evil state? Did it push her over the edge from annoying friend to completely intolerable human being?

We actually do have at least one insight into Wardes now: he's fireproof.

I mean, he didn't catch fire despite the proximity to the trio, which can't be explained by anything less than complete immunity to combustion.
Similarly, we can deduce he's stab/slash proof, since he survived their sharp wits non the worse for wear and non-corrodable since he stands up to their caustic sarcasm...

Well, a Minion rates it Minion like, so... Gloating?

Also, is it a His Dark Materials reference?

Waiiiiiiiiit a minute.

A golden monkey? A great cat? Two estranged former associates?

What's next, a golden compass?

EDIT: bloody people thinking the same things I do.

There is another, more horrifying option we have not yet considered... Wardes could also be the mentor figure who taught them everything they know.

Oh yeah, that makes sense... for some reason I misremembered her daemon as an orangutan.

It`s funny, to be honest the best think Louise could do for Eleanore right now would probably be to just leave her in that easily escapable jail cell and lay waste to Montespan, her cronies, and all her stuff.

Also did I correctly catch the implication that Montespan, Magdelene, Eleanore, and Wardes used to adventure together

Truly a formidable boss, even if I am not in favor of just giving bosses arbitrary immunities instead of making them employ some interesting and challenging tactics keeping players on their toes.

Guiche: "My goodness. So who of us do you think is the most likely to have one of the others arrested in eight years time?"

Kirche: "Question! Would they be profiting from the arrest?"

Guiche: "... maybe?"

Kirche: "Then Monmon."

Tabitha: "Montmorency."

Monmon: "Me."

Guiche: "Why are you voting for yourself?"

Monmon: "Because in that hypothetical situation, it means I'm the one with the authority to arrest people, rather than the person being arrested."

Why do I have a feeling Igni may end up setting fire to Montespan's stuff before Louise.

Why do I have the feeling that Igni will set fire to everything BUT Montespan's stuff?

Nah... he seems smart enough to know what overlady does NOT want. 'everything on fire' is one of them since oversister can be set on fire and thus not all things are allowed to be on fire.

... that may be too much logic I agree...

Igni is an Elite Minion. Even if he isn't as smart as Maggat or Maxy, he's still a genius by minion standards who grasps such abstract concepts as "loot before burning".

And that's quite an accomplishment for a Red, who can loot in the middle of a burning building perfectly fine right until the roof falls in on them and then they don't get revived because the blues can't get to them until they extinguish the fire with blue magic.

Yeah, the humor in this fic is what really keeps me coming back for more. You keep all that wordplay going, have interesting characters, and the worldbuilding is top notch as well. Can't wait to see more interactions between Eleanore, Marzipan, and Magdalene in their inevitable confrontation, as well as the former's reaction to the identity of the Overlady of the North. Igni will likely be up to some combustible action next time around, and I can't wait to see it. Keep up the good work.

Eleanore appeared to be quite sanguine about working with Igni talking to herself while one of the Overlady's minions happened to be around. She probably suspected that something more than a simple kidnapping was going on, especially with Igni's insistence that he never hurt her sister. I suspect that Eleanore will keep up the pretence that Louise is the Overlady's captive even when Louise is right in front of her wearing the tell-tale gauntlet:

Eleanore: "Oh woe is me for the Evil Overlady has kidnapped my sister and forced her to do her bidding and that bidding regrettably includes embarrassing my rival and looting or burning all of her possessions, including the warrant for my arrest and the prison where she tried to lock me up. Truly I am quite distraught at all of these depredations."

No, he insisted he'd never threatened her sister. Which he hadn't in their conversation-- it's the kind of thing a minion might say even if she was a real captive. Eleanor may simply be looking at this as pitting two enemies against one another.

Unless I missed something, Eleanore only mentioned "my little sister," singular. Depending on whether she actually read Cattleya's letter or just had the events summarized to her, she might not have learned that Louise is actually alive, and could only know that the Overlady is holding Cattleya.

"Oh, WOE is me, to be so horribly insulted by the Evil Overlady of the North while she has my incapable-of-acting-to-save-her-own-or-her-sisters-lives-and-reputations ashostage thus rendering me unable to respond in kind with righteous indignity and fiery smiting lest my sister-the-hostage suffer wicked retribution such as pinching of the cheeks and the dreaded noogie of doom and such a hiding. I can but hope that my cooperation will ensure her safety for the time so that we may one day be reunited."
