Something of a status update, I suppose.

Overlady is being worked on, in what I suppose can be called dribs and drabs. I have planned out the conclusion, and do intend to reach it. There are in fact multiple chapters ahead of this one which have already been written.

But I have decided that I will only release arcs when the entire arc has been written. This will ensure that each arc can be read in a format that essentially makes it a satisfying novella, rather than just unreliably producing work as and when it is written.

As this interlude is part of the previous arc (technically speaking), I do not feel that I am breaking this decision by releasing it here and now as an early Christmas present.

(and you're getting it as an early Christmas present because I have another fic that I will be releasing a chapter of on the 25th and I don't want them competing with one another)
Okay I have yet to read the update. (I may even need to catch up on this as it's been a while for me.) With that said if nothing else...

Hm Agnes attacking a small army of automata with little more than a few half-trained maids and cursed artifacts, while injured and full of vampire blood suggests an unfortunate conclusion.

On the other hand, once she rises as a cursed lady of the night, she should be a lot more amenable to her princess' latest hobby!

I'm pretty sure she won't die. We already got a vampire on the team and could really use a non-vampy and non inexperienced demon princess physical combatant that isn't just a minion.

Still it'll be really nice to see how Anges' perspective and relationships work with Louise and Henrietta. They both could probably do with her advice right about now.

Thank you so much!

I got news of multiple cancellations of Christmas plans today, so seeing this update was a wonderful surprise.

This pleases me, for it shows that overlady has still some life- but the cliffhanger is quite vexatious. Good shit

Well, this interpretation of Agnes is certainly enjoyable to read, much like nearly every other character in this story, so the update was a welcome holiday gift.

To get an update on my birthday of my most favourite Familiar of Zero stories was a great present. I eagerly wait more even if it takes another year or more. Merry christmas Earthscorpion and have a nice new years as well.

I'm a little disappointed I'm the first to make the observation that you obviously need the maids to clean house.

So happy to see an update finally, and know that this isn't abandoned and there's more written! Great news!

And this was a wonderful installment. Many of the jokes and characters have alread been commented on, but I'd just like to note how this update referenced previous chapters. For example, Agnes being told her Princess is not in this tower, which is of course a Mario reference, but also the name of the arc where Louise rescued Henrietta. Similar for cleaning house and the Tower Heart being removed, reminding us of the arc where Louise scoured the tower. And the opening commenting on the weather not being properly melodramatic is a perfect callback to the opening lines of this fic.

Agnes is a great character, and it's nice to see some characterization for Helene. I wonder if we'll get more for the other maids. In any case, can't wait for the next chapter!

OK, so I know the story is fantasy, and comedic fantasy at that, but

"Ah, your haemophagaciousness," Gnarl said, as she passed his shuffling form.

Look, I refuse to believe that Gnarl has actually managed to pronounce this correctly without stumbling. It's unpossible.

Hm Agnes attacking a small army of automata with little more than a few half-trained maids and cursed artifacts, while injured and full of vampire blood suggests an unfortunate conclusion.

Nah, that's just a heroic feat, and not even a particularly bullshit one at that.

For Agnes as a recruit, I see two possibilities:

- She goes full heretic aesthetically, complete with demonic weapons, life-seeking bullets, unholy symbols, etc., while still insisting on being on the side of Good (unlike those damn Romalians), thus actually fitting perfectly with Louise (and probably bonding with her over rants about the corrupt establishment, even if they don't perfectly agree on which establishment they mean);

- She doesn't quite become a vampire, but she does get vampire powers as a cursed dark side the allure of which she must resist lest she become danger to her loved ones (it's also, like, wicked cool, so her lamentations about it ring hollow in the audience,s ears, but that's beside the point).

On the other hand, she was unsure if stealing from the venal, corrupt Regency Council was an act of Evil.

In my first reading of this chapter, I thought Agnès was a foil for Karina. Though she has the appearance of a stern and uncompromising heroine like Karina, unlike Karina she believes it is sometimes acceptable to use Evil means. It would be interesting to see what differences might arise because Agnès simply lacks the raw power to back up Karina's Rule of Steel.
On the other hand, she seems prone to motivated reasoning anyways. On the third hand, Catt's blood is having an effect on the chevalier of Milan, made more obvious later this chapter. So it's kind of hard to pick out exactly which parts came from Agnès herself and which parts came from vampiric influence.
Right now, I'm leaning towards Agnès being a foil for Catt instead, with both of them leaning toward Delusional Evil. If I understand the categorisation of Evil correctly, Louise is a mixture of Pragmatic and Delusional, Henrietta is Indulgent, and Jessica isn't actually Evil.

Her hands were shaking from adrenaline so much she spilt her first attempt...
spilt -> spoilt

And the less that is said about the way that the Church uses holy crusades for secular means rather than only in times of crises of the faith, the better!
means -> ends (unless Agnès is making the mistake in-character)

And it turned out that she was neither a morose drunk, or a happy drunk.
or -> nor

...and also not irrelevantly shot here...
here -> her

...than someone who you don't know their levers.
The grammar is a little off; "...who you don't know the levers of", maybe?

And she is used to people too stubborn to stay in bed when ordered.
- Meaning Louise

"And I am a captive of the Steel Maiden."

For some reason, Carmine pulled a face.
- This is either a reference to Henrietta (because of how well Henrietta took to being a prisoner) or Lord Mutik of Jiazha (because of what Louise made her do with him). Speaking of which, what happened to Mutik anyways? We haven't heard a peep from the guy since returning from Xizang.

...free-spirited nigh-immortal vampire...
- Quite an oxymoron, considering how vampirism works in Overlady

In truth, I had already told them to start heating up the oil, so I suppose we'll be having deep-fried rats for dinner tonight...
- Using Agnès as an excuse to have deep-fried rats is such a Gnarl thing to do

Nothing since the last time you asked.
- I like the image of Catt asking if Louise has called the way a child would ask "are we there yet?"

"...there wouldn't be any garlic in the meal, so it would be ... bland and flavourless."
- Horrors of horrors, Agnès is a secretly a Gallian

"So don't feel too obliged to ask for seconds. Or finish everything," the redheaded maid who had poured her soup murmured in her ear.
- I'm probably over-analyzing this, but they likely haven't launched any raids since Louise took the bulk of their forces with her to Albion. The maids may have been reduced to minionish rations, despite later protests to the contrary.

"Oh, no, I don't drink wine," Cattleya said. She licked her lips. "I'm sure I can find something, though."
- This is poor impulse control, even for Catt. Feeding after major blood loss may, like repeated feedings, leave Agnès in an irrecoverable state much like how Catt was by the time Louis's depredation was discovered.

I can't see anyone, so I have to assume that this is you, Cattleya?
"...but there is no one on the other end."
- It took me a second reading to realize this is Catt's lack of reflection at work.

The magic mirror cut off, showing the solid blue of a cloudless sky. A rune in the dark tongue floated in the upper left colour.
- The legendary Blue Screen of Death?

"Such treason from the vizier of the overlady!" Agnès said, horror in her voice. "To betray her to an outside force like that is unforgivable!"
- I can't help but think this is Catt's blood speaking through Agnès

Cattleya broke down into bloody coughing.
- Catt's laughing because Agnès is using the same excuse Catt had given to her parents when she left home.
