Oglethorpe's dream: A Colony of Georgia quest

South Carolina opens Naval Academy:
The Arch-nemesis of the Province of Georgia, the Province of South Carolina has built its own Naval Academy much better than Georgia's to the point that even our own citizens prefer the school in South Carolina. The school in Savannah has informed the government they are bankrupt and have to shut down.

New Government Office set up under Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In Savannah the Office of Immigration is set up in Savannah under the purview of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Maryburg streamlining the process of immigrating to Georgia. This has caused Savannah to significantly expand as it is the main port of call for immigrants in Georgia.

More Ships sink in Savannah Harbor:
Before the new experts at our newly finished New Venice Arsenal can work on the ships of the Georgian Naval Militia they all sink in Savannah Harbor. Our experts current theory is that the ships sank due to the fact that they were completely rotted through.

In Georgia Fair has become slang for Prostitution:
The County Fairs have been a miserable failure and have become Red Light districts. When a man goes to the Fair he is going to visit prostitutes and have copious amounts of sex.

Talks with Board of Trade lead nowhere:
Our Representatives to the Board of Trade in London have been unable to convince the Board to try and change government policy in London towards our favor.

Okay so SC naval academy is a problem because they're our rival and we can be letting them get funding. The rest is mostly just not getting things dined which sucks but isn't the worst but I smell opportunity in the fairs.

I'm thinking if we can regulate and tax and run nice clean red light ops that's some good opportunity to put coin in our pocket, facilitate progressive movement, and form a unique culture. Synergy with ports and ships is great as well.

Also removes potential problems from the board by virtue of them not being problems, turns a bad thing jnto a good one, and makes other problems easier to deal with by virtue of already having a government hand in them.

So important things to do I think are definitely importing teachers for our own better naval academy as well as red light regulation.

Oh, and yes, every time we do something someone else is already doing if we do red light means we can append everything with blackjack and hookers since the foundation of our society is gambling. Like the naval academy which will be our own damn naval academy with blackjack and hookers.

Is there any way we could create a network of agents so they can report back on what other states are doing and the Spanish?
SC Naval Academy pretty much blindside us, better be aware and take advantage to fill in the gaps with others states covering.

regulate the red light district (earn taxes on alcohol, prostitution and gambling)

health standards with regular medical inspection (bonus medical study of venereal diseases)

use brothels as information-gathering tools (set it up as a
HUMINT operation)

vetted bartenders, pay the ladies for good intel, set up listening posts, ....

... I have a feeling we're actually going to dedicate our next turn primarily to red light ops...

Gods I love this quest.

As for the ship hulks.

let's build a diving bell and a floating crane and train some divers in raising wrecks.

We might not have the best ships, but at least we will have the best frogmen.

Wait wait hold up, what do you mean we won't have the best ships? Venetians were the best, cheapest, and fastest built. We'll have the best ships and the best frogmen.

Might not have the best they say. Well at least they say

C'mon mate, there's no no maybe at least here, well be the best yeah.

Honest to god my favorite part of this quest is the rivalry between South Carolina and Georgia. I mean this rivalry has descended into cartoonish proportions

...

Shit you're right, we're using cartoon rival logic on them.

Damn, I guess we should use the clinics to keep disease in these districts down. We should also get to work on the sloops.

...Now I wonder what other people who're aware of this rivelry think about it. Let alone how people studying the history of this timeline will think. Also if this cartoonish rivalry is referenced in future media/whatever.

Tbqh it doesn't feel all that cartoonish within the universe. There was the Evictions, the Border Patrol Military Strategy for the Revolution, and now the S. Carolina's Naval Academy Counter.

Any way we can counter S. Carolina's Naval Academy? Perhaps guerrilla warfare or marines school?

:/
Unfortunate turn of events. Tho if we are legalizing red light district then we might run into trouble with the Catholic and Protestant, the oldest profession doesn't have any love from them.

Edit: But reality of the sailor life might make the faiths soften their opposition if we can spin it a bit, more lambs down the line etc.

I think the best first step to either legalization or ban is having the clinics determine with this is a health hazard for tropical disease. Something to say,' examine this mess while we try to fix this and maybe evict the hookers.'

I don't think we got that many Puritans so it should be mostly Catholics who are the problem and they aren't the most.

Honestly that one is something where there is no way to sell it to then until it's already there. The only way we'll get religious reactionaries to accept the first profession is to practice it and justify to them after the fact. Which does work, almost every movement involving sex in a context other than repression that I can think of in OTL kinda happened without the religious reactionaries and then was just left for them to accept. Like, they don't care about STDs, they care about it destroying society for nebulous because it will type reasons.

So yeah, you're not selling prostitution to hardliners via any other method than doing it well and demonstrating that it won't lead to the destruction of society. After you've done it then you can sell it to them. Least that's how I've gotten anything sex related across to Hardline religious folk and how I remember it happening historically.

Either do it or don't but selling it to them before it's done is a battle that can't be won.

Like, they don't care about STDs

People do care about Malaria and Yellow Fever. It was part of the reason for British Campaign faltering in the Caribbean here.

Edit: To elaborate, it's to try a remedy a situation with the use of newly created clinics, or at the very least try and make something of the situation. There is no doubt we might very well just leave the situation as is but the presence of an organized response is just as important as a solution, if we decide this is in fact a problem.

I mean yeah but that's not what I was talking about, I was talking about the red light districts and vice regulation. Clinics are a good thing but won't convince the Catholic reactionaries that vice legalization is anything but the end of the world until after we've done it.

Organizing clinics is an extremely important thing to do on almost every level.

The General Assembly has assembled in Maryburg to plan the next six month plan as usual though they have a rather Bizarre situation to deal with. Their is one mandatory action to deal with.

Wife sells her Husband at auction:
The process of Wife Selling began in England due to the inaccessibility of divorce for the common people. The selling wasn't an actual auction but more a ritual as the wife and husband both agreed to the selling and a buyer was arranged for long in advance. In the event that something went wrong though the wife had the right to refuse to be sold and reopen bidding.

The ritual itself involved the husband putting a halter around his wife's waist or neck and tying her to a pole or fence. After this all the men who wished to participate in the spectacle gathered at the chosen location and the husband would open bidding which was usually immediately won by the pre-chosen candidate. Though if the man who was supposed to buy her didn't show up the wife was allowed to bid for herself and buy herself.

Due to Georgia mostly copying England's law system the practice was imported to Georgia as like in England getting a divorce was basically impossible. This brings us to a unique situation in Savannah were a wife sold her fourteen year old husband.

The backstory is that a twenty-three year old woman named Mary Smith married a fourteen year old boy named Thomas so he could escape from his abusive parents. They had apparently been planning the scheme for a long time as the moment he reached the age of consent he married Mrs. Smith. (the age of consent is legally twelve for woman and fourteen for men) Thomas moved into Mrs. Smith's house and their relationship developed into a warm maternal one with Mrs. Smith acting as the mother that Thomas never had.

The only hiccup in their life was that Thomas fell in love with a woman. Her name was Miss. Georgia Helm an eighteen year old woman who seemed equally smitten with Thomas. At their six month anniversary Thomas and Mrs. Smith (who was very maternal and protective over Thomas) received Miss. Helm in their parlor where it was agreed that Miss. Helm would "buy" Thomas. And so the ceremony was preformed with Mrs. Smith leading Thomas to one of the many open air courtyards in Savannah with a halter tied around his neck. After he was tied to a pole the ladies of Savannah assembled in the courtyard and Mrs. Smith opened the bidding. After token competition from the other ladies Miss. Helm won the auction paying ten shillings, two pigs and a pint of beer to Mrs. Smith. Afterwards Miss. Helm paid her promised money, livestock and alcohol and Mrs. Smith untied Thomas and handed his halter to Miss. Helm and they signed a contract.

I Mrs. Mary Smith have consented to sell my husband Thomas to Miss. Georgia Helm and to hand him into her custody after the agreed payment of ten shillings, two pigs and a pint of beer.
I Miss. Georgia Helm hereby agree to assume the obligations of supporting and caring for Thomas and hereby agree to assume the legal obligations that come with taking him as my husband and dependent.

Afterwards a tasteful reception was held at Mrs. Smith's house it is also reported that Mrs. Smith visits Thomas at least three times a week.

Having such an extraordinary auction has brought the practice of wife selling or in this case husband selling to the doors of the General Assembly. How should the government react to this case should wife/husband selling be banned in Georgia? Should the age of consent be raised from fourteen (male) and twelve (female) and if the age of majority is raised what is to be done about child brides and grooms like Thomas who are happily married? Should divorce be legalized in Georgia? Whatever is decided it is clear that the issue of wife/husband selling must be confronted by the General Assembly.

So we should ban this since it's like slavery in that a person was sold. Also because it's part of a greater issue of stopping the red light distracts we spawned.

Well 99.9% of the time both the husband and wife are completely ok with doing this and there are legal protections to the person being sold such as they can refuse to be "bought" by the bidder that wins and they can buy themselves. Also the selling part doesn't change your legal status under the law it just changes your spouse. Also this is already not legal the people just don't care what the government thinks at all.

Right... it's just very disconcerting to 21th century man. Especially so, if you flip all the genders of people involved.
