Naruto Quest: The Endless War of the Shinobi Empires (AU, Rinnegan MC)

Winning Vote: Training in either speed or stamina.
"Hm. How about some training? Getting faster or having more stamina would be nice!" you said after pondering the choice for a moment.

Hiricho's casual smile suddenly turned into a grim frown. He crossed his arms and closed his eyes before taking a deep breath. "This is some sort of joke to you?"

"Huh?" you responded, confused.

"Gaikotsu killed many good men and women of my clan and I try to reward you, yet you throw such a basic request in my face?" Hiricho began, opening his eyes, which were now narrow and full of rage. "You dare dishonor the lives lost by that forsaken child!?"

"I didn't mean-"

"SILENCE!" Hiricho roared, standing to his full height. "You have made a mockery of my clan, my generosity, and the dead! Get out of the Kaguya district, your disrespect taints our land!"

[X] Taijutsu.
-[X] Learn the Strong Fist style.

Arc 2: Chapter 23
Winning Vote:
[] Taijutsu.
-[] Learn the Strong Fist style.

---

"I'd like to learn the Strong Fist style! I have ninjutsu and genjutsu in spades, but nothing really focusing in taijutsu other than the Eight Gates." you answered.

"Alright! The Strong Fist is a style that's easy to learn, but hard to master. Are you sure?" Kushina asked, now finishing cleaning the dishes and turning to face you.

"I'm sure!" you nodded.

Kushina smiled and slammed her fist into her open palm. "Then let's change into some proper training attire!"

Without another word, you went upstairs and changed into some clothes you weren't afraid of getting dirty in. You met with Kushina in the backyard where you had your spar and Kushina had changed into her shinobi clothing, tying up her long red hair into a ponytail. The lesson was about to begin!

---

The week went by in a blur. Kushina was right in that the Strong Fist was easy to learn, it was mostly using punches or kicks to take out someone in as few hits as possible. You were more busy learning the fundamentals of the style, how to attack properly and doing strength training to build up your power. You had never worked out harder in that week than you had in your life, and Kushina made sure to let you know that you need to keep polishing your skills even when she wasn't there to help you. While you were training, Jiao sometimes watched from the sidelines, never joining in herself, but then again you don't think she'd mesh well with the Strong Fist anyway.

By the end of the week, you had a firm grasp of the Strong Fist and you could feel some real muscle in your arms and legs! Kushina was mildly surprised by the rate of your growth, but you had expected it by this point. Your Rinnegan truly seemed to be a blessing from the heavens...

+1 Taijutsu and Strength

Eventually, Kushina's week was up and she had to deal with some clan business for awhile that was going to have her gone for long periods of time. Kushina told you and Jiao that as long as you cleaned up after yourselves, you could feel free to stay around as long as needed. The next morning, you were out in the backyard, doing some intense exercises while Jiao watched, sipping from a teacup as she lazily floated a few feet in the air.

"Don't you ever get bored of doing the same thing over and over?" Jiao asked, levitating closer to you.

"It'll make me stronger! You could use some training too, Jiao. A stiff breeze could knock you over!" you said as you did multiple push-ups.

"My strength doesn't come from grotesque muscles or primitive strategies." Jiao haughtily said, a smug grin on her face. "I barely need to lift a finger to beat my foes."

"That's why I beat you with one punch, right?" you said, getting to your feet and flashing Jiao your biggest and most annoying smile.

Jiao's smug grin turned into an annoyed frown. "A cheap, and lucky might I add, shot that would have gotten anyone."

"Uh huh, I'm sure that-" you began, but it was then you noticed a massive chakra only a few dozen yards away. You spun in the direction of the chakra, but it was honestly unneeded, as in the small forest behind Kushina's house, you could see Yukari standing in plain sight. Her head was tilted downward, her long, stringy red hair covering her face except for a small split, showing her almost glowing, narrow yellow eye.

"What is it, Maya?" Jiao began, but the rest of her sentence died in her mouth as she followed your gaze and saw Yukari for herself.

You felt a surge of panic go through your chest, but you forced yourself to remain calm. Even with Kushina away, there's no way Yukari would blatantly attack you in daylight, right? You couldn't feel any hostility from her as well.

What will you do?

[] You and Jiao are going back into Kushina's house. It'll be safer in there than outside!

[] Stand your ground and ask why Yukari's here. You can't show weakness here!

[] Tell Jiao to fly away and get help, you'll try to stall Yukari until then!

Arc 2: Chapter 24
Stand your ground and ask why Yukari's here. You can't show weakness here!

---

"Why are you here, Yukari?" you loudly asked, taking a step forward and pushing down your instinctual fear.

"What are you doing Maya? Shouldn't we run?" Jiao whispered, so focused on Yukari that she had stopped floating, now standing next to you.

"If we stand our ground, we can bluff more confidently." you muttered back. Jiao made a face at that, but said nothing as Yukari shambled forwards, walking very stiff and unnaturally. She eventually crossed into Kushina's backyard, standing only a few feet away from you now. She moved her hair out of her face, her pale arm covered with black seals. Now that you were much closer, you could see the deep, dark bags around Yukari's eyes, which made them look like they had sunken into her skull. Her narrow yellow eyes quickly shifted between you and Jiao, an unimpressed frown on her face.

Yukari's Theme

"I don't get it..." Yukari said, her voice a rough and raspy whisper. "What does he see in you?"

"Who is he?" Jiao asked, although you already knew the answer.

"You...I can understand. Exotic, a rare fruit. But he does not care for you." Yukari said, ignoring the question and glaring at Jiao. She then turned her attention towards you, disgust clearly shown on her face. "Barely matured, average looks, common trash. But he only has eyes for you...and not for me..."

"Are you talking about Kotei?" you replied, feeling rather unnerved but keeping a stony face.

"DO NOT SPEAK HIS NAME!" Yukari shrieked, rearing back her fist to strike you! You put up your arms to defend, but Yukari didn't continue her attack, her entire arm shaking violently. She limply dropped her arm to her side. "N-No. He said not to strike...not now. I can't..."

You looked at Jiao for a moment, seeing that she was rather disturbed by Yukari's behavior. If you were being honest, you were too, but something inside you knew that something was...wrong. Yukari is dangerous, but even from these brief moments, you could see how much control Kotei had over her.

"What are you doing here?" you asked gently.

"I can't understand. Why has he shown interest in you? Am I not good enough? She is weak...I can crush her right now. We can go back to how it was. Me and him. But he said not to harm her...does he like her? Over me? But..." Yukari mumbled to herself. You could see tears forming in her eyes at this perceived betrayal by Kotei.

You wanted to say something to Yukari, but should you? She seemed like a bomb waiting to go off at any moment...

What will you do?

[] Tell Yukari that you have no interest in Kotei. Perhaps soothing her fears might help?

[] Tell Yukari that you're sure Kotei would never betray her. You have no idea if he actually would, but you don't need her exploding in a rage right now.

[] Ask Yukari if Kotei actually said these things, or if she's overthinking this. Maybe trying to rationalize this will help out.

[] Stay silent. Anything you say might go wrong, it's better to be passive for now.

[] Write In.

DIfficult decision.
Telling her there's no interest in Kotei can be taken wrong and she seems to be in a mindset that would take it wrong as an insult against Kotei.
Staying silent is probably also bad, because she is going to spiral around and probably an extreme. It can also be taken wrong (No defense>Admission of some guilt)

[] Tell Yukari that you're sure Kotei would never betray her. You have no idea if he actually would, but you don't need her exploding in a rage right now.
(this can also be taken wrong, because it implies that we are closer to him than we actually are)

[x] Ask Yukari if Kotei actually said these things, or if she's overthinking this. Maybe trying to rationalize this will help out.

Somewhere between these options probably.
Probably a write in for it that is a bit more elegant would be best and I would switch to that.

[x] Ask Yukari if Kotei actually said these things, or if she's overthinking this. Maybe trying to rationalize this will help out.
-[X] Has he shown this type of behavior in the past? He seems to be the type that values facing powerful or unique opponents.

"Yukari," you gently said, snapping her out of her muttering to glare at you, hate, anger, and confusion in her eyes. You felt a pit in your stomach. You hated comparing a person to an animal, but that's the exact feeling you had from Yukari. Wild, dangerous...but also scared. Terrified even. You took a moment to review all the data you had on Kotei from your talks with Kushina and Makima before speaking carefully. "Has...he actually said anything to you about this? Perhaps you're letting these thoughts stray from the truth."

"OF COURSE HE HASN'T SAID IT!" Yukari shrieked in your face, making you take a step backwards from shock. "But he can talk in so many other ways! The way his eyes flick away from me, the way his nostrils flare, the way he tenses up, the way his breathing changes! I know every inch of his being! I know what he says when he isn't even here! I can hear him!"

Yukari whipped her head around, frantically looking for...something. She brought the tip of right thumb to her mouth, the tip of the digit was heavily calloused and scarred. Yukari began to rapidly nibble on it, chewing through the thick, scarred skin until blood began to leak from it. She was starting to tremble, panting heavily.

"Yukari, slow down. Take a deep breath, alright?" you soothingly said, taking your own deep breath as well. Surprisingly, Yukari did what you said. She inhaled deeply through her nose and exhaled from her mouth sharply and her arms went limp at her sides. With Yukari being...as calm as she could be, you continued your questioning. "Has Ko- I mean, has he shown this type of behavior in the past? From my very limited interactions, he seems to be the type that values facing powerful or unique opponents."

Yukari turned to look at you, confusion clear on her face. She opened her jaw as if to speak, but nothing came out. After a long moment she replied, "H-He has. He has...shown interest like this before. But you. You. You. When he speaks about you, he's much more livelier. More than he ever has in years."

"I don't know what I've done to attract such attention, but I have no personal intentions of going between you and Kotei." you said. You expected Yukari to lash out as you said his name, but she didn't. She just kept her same puzzled glare.

"I don't get it." was all Yukari said before walking away, chewing on her thumb and muttering to herself. You watched as she walked until she was shrouded in the dense forest beyond Kushina's house.

"...What a freak." Jiao bluntly said, crossing her arms. "I don't know how you did it, but you managed to repel her."

"She isn't well." you muttered.

"I think anyone with working eyes or ears could tell that." Jiao spat.

"Did you see how she talked about Kotei? She's obsessed with him, but she was so terrified. She's..." you trailed off.

"Maya, no." Jiao firmly stated, now moving in front of you. She snapped her fingers to get your full attention and continued, "She's highly dangerous and unstable. I know what you want to do, but you can't save everyone. It won't be as easy as merely taking care of Kotei, you saw how she clung to him even when he wasn't here."

"She's clearly suffering! I could see and hear her fear. If I ignored her, could I really be honest to myself and others about my goal? About helping and and saving the people of these lands?" you shot back.

Jiao sighed, shaking her head. "Maya, I've been around authority and leadership my entire life. I've seen the type of commands and orders kings and emperors have to make. You have to make the hardest choices! Yukari isn't worth the risk. You don't know how she'd react if Kotei were to die!"

"I'm sorry Jiao, but when I see someone suffering that much, I cannot turn a blind eye towards them! As I said, I could see her fear and-"

"Did you actually see that? Or are you projecting your own feelings of Kotei onto her?" Jiao interjected coldly, stopping you in your tracks. When you couldn't answer, Jiao continued. "I know whatever Kotei has done to Yukari is sickening. But I also know you're scared of him as well. I'm no fan of him either, but don't make rash choices purely to make yourself feel better."

Jiao's tone at the end was soft, almost gentle. You genuinely didn't think of yourself projecting into Yukari, but Jiao was right on one point. Kotei does scare you, from the stories you've heard, his incredible strength, and the fact he's so laser focused on you that Yukari felt the need to investigate. But were you really only wanting to save Yukari in a roundabout way of conquering your own fear?

What is your response to Jiao?

[] Jiao made some good points, but you simply cannot leave Yukari to her fate. One way or another, you will rescue her. (Starts Sidequest)

[] You can't help but feel for Yukari, but Jiao was right. You may just be projecting, and Yukari is much too dangerous.

"Jiao, I recognize what you're saying. Maybe this is a fruitless endeavor, but I simply cannot turn a blind eye to someone who's clearly suffering. Logically, I know I cannot save everyone. But I will save as many as I can." you firmly said, looking at Jiao.

Jiao stayed silent for a moment before muttering, "That fire in your eyes. Truly, you are like him..."

"Him?" you repeated, curious.

"You remind me of someone from my past, that is all." Jiao said, clearly not wanting to explain further. "Fine, do as you wish with Yukari, and I will lend my aid if you need it."

"Thank you, Jiao. I genuinely appreciate it." you softly replied. Jiao rolled her eyes, but nodded.

"Well, I am going back inside. The sunlight is going to damage my skin if I stay out any longer." Jiao said, floating back into Kushina's house. You sighed and looked around. You could continue your exercises, but if you were being honest, the whole thing with Yukari ruined that for now. You looked into the bright blue sky, wondering what you'll do now.

[] Continue your training. You need to push through and get stronger.

[] Hang out with Jiao. You're rather curious about that person Jiao talked about.

[] Go into town and try to learn about Yukari. If you're going to help her, you need all the information you can get.

[] Go into town and investigate Kotei and his actions. If you're going to help Yukari, then you need to learn about the source of her troubles.

[] Perhaps you should do as Byakuren asked and gather information on various clans of the Whirlpool. It would look bad if you came back completely empty handed.

Surely these can both be folded into the same general action.

Asking about that guy might get his attention before we have done enough level grinding, lets just do what tourists do and very not suspiciously ask a bunch of obnoxious questions about things.

With Yukari fresh on your mind, you decided to kill two birds with one stone. You'll investigate about Kotei, and at the same time you'll do the job Byakuren gave you by learning more about the clans! With your plans set, you went back into Kushina's house and refreshed your body with a shower and a quick meal. You told Jiao that you were going out, to which she merely nodded in response, clearly being more interested in a book she found.

You were worried about Kotei finding you, but remembering Kushina's words that Kotei never did anything outwardly illegal gave you some comfort. He wasn't going to swoop in from the sky and nab you...hopefully. With a deep sigh you walked out of Kushina's house and down the road. You remember Makima, Kotei's sister, coming out of a house near Kushina's, but you were going to explore further into the area, hopefully you'd gain some information on both the Uragiri clan and Kotei! As you walked down the road and further into the Uragiri district of the clan area, you noticed a few things.

The first thing was that you noticed was you were surrounded in a sea of redheads. From deep crimsons to almost pinks, but with your knowledge of Kotei and Makima, you could tell the main difference between the Uzumaki and the Uragiri was eye color. The Uzumaki tended to be variable in color, but every Uragiri you saw had some sort of orange eyes. Adding onto this, you were surprised how close the Uzumaki and Uragiri clans were.

"Seems like the two clans are extremely close." you thought. Because of this, you stuck out, being the only one with black hair in the area. Thankfully, your Perfect Transformation genjutsu was doing it's job well, making you seem like natural fit to the crowd. Eventually, you ended up in a plaza of sorts, a square where people sat on benches to talk, kids played, and in the center of it all, a large bronze statue of the symbols of the Leaf and Whirlpool, signifying their unity.

You tried your best to find any hint of Kotei or the Uragiri clan's abilities, but clearly you weren't going to find it by simply wandering around and hoping it find you. You found a free bench and sat down, taking in the sights once again. In the distance, you could see a temple with a road starting from the plaza leading to it. Next, you saw another road that eventually transformed into a dirt path going towards the hint of a field, perhaps a training area? Finally, you noticed a man across the plaza who was slender and handsome, with extremely long and silky looking silver hair. He was reading a book and you could notice a group of girls hiding behind the statue to stare at him.

"Damn, he's hot! Huh...between him and Kimimaro...do I have a thing for white haired pretty boys? Then again, Jiao's a looker herself and she's neither white haired or a boy! Eh, oh well, doesn't matter all that much. For now." you thought, as you decided what to do next.

[] Go visit the temple. You've never really been to a religious place before, perhaps you can learn something new.

[] Go to the fields. Should it be a training area, you could easily see if there's any notable Uragiri techniques!

[] Go talk to the white haired man. Barring your physical attraction to him, he clearly contrasts with everyone else in the area, that's enough to get you curious.

[] Perhaps you should walk around more, perhaps you can find something interesting.
