Movie Tycoon Quest - Temple Productions (2000-)

And that's not always the case.

Its not the general rule, no. But it is a good rule of thumb to remember. Now wikipedia says Pitch Black did 53 million off a budget of 23 million. Which means it probably posted a small profit.

Which isn't good enough for me.

This would be what I'd do:

[X] Yes - $3,000,000

A sci-fi horror is not gonna play well unless it really has an added oomph.

Edit: Front page says we have $5 mil in the warchest, so this would spend a considerable bit of it, but it'll probably need it.

[x] Yes - $3,000,000

I agree, we either go big or go home with this.

I'm looking for a crit that will create a whole franchise for our company to exploit and for us to use to create a really good relationship with Vin.

Uh, if we only get +1 for every $250,000, then spending $3mil would only give us a bonus of +12 total. That's...not much. I mean, it's something, but... yikes.

[X] Yes - $3,000,000

It also means that we have a 13% chance to crit now. Though I imagine that if we get a nat 100 we'd be looking at Pitch Black as the next coming of Star Wars.

@Droman What's the Merchandising looking like? Or is it just rolled into ticket sales for Quest simplicity?

If this movie only does as well it did IRL, then we'll take a $1 million dollar loss at least. So it depends on what the thresholds for success and rewards are. But we need this movie to make at least $56 million dollars to break even.

29/05/2000 - The Box Office Results (Pitch Black)
And the box office results read....

$ 77,880,000 dollars!

Hell of a start for the Temple, if you had to say so yourself. Apparently your last minute marketing scheme helped make the push overseas, where 26.2% of the overall numbers came from. Of course, 29.5% came from the opening weekend and you ran it for 13 weekends in total, so....

Eh, whatever, you're rolling in cash now!

....

Oh right, you still have to deduct the cuts for Universal (and the exhibitors) and Legendary.

Let's see now, they each get a quarter, so that's $ 19,470,000 for each.

And that leaves you with $ 38,940,000 in cold hard cash to join your remaining funds of $ 2,000,000.

And you spent $ 33,000,000 to get the rights to this movie and market it, though most of that money was only briefly yours.

Leaving you with a net profit of $ 5,940,000.

And that's before the tax man gets his due.

Now, as for audience and critical reactions....

Damn. Now isn't that a tale of two audiences?

Critics are really taking the film to task, but word on the street is your little movie might as well have been a summer blockbuster given how well people liked it. And even if the critics are slamming it as a "sci-fi schlock fest", it's not like they'll buy the merchandise!

Speaking of merchandise...

You'd gotten a couple of offers since before the movie got it's run to get some merchandise ready to sell. T-Shirts, figurines of Pitch Black's lead character Riddick and the monsters, even a prequel comic by this company called WildStorm... You'd signed off on all of them of course, but now the money is starting to come in on those...

Nothing really sold too well given how small the focus was by your partners (in fact they're quickly scrambling to produce slightly larger amounts just in case), but given you asked for money up front and got a limited selling time, $ 2,725,000 dollars certainly doesn't hurt the piggy bank. You even suggested Pitch Black's director David Twohy have first crack at the prequel comic, since he'd also co-written the script. Not much of a gig of course, but it's his baby more than it is yours.

Still, both Legendary and Universal are unlikely to be too happy with their cuts, given how much they invested. And given that Universal has distribution rights and Legendary has sequel co-production rights...

Maybe it's time to take a step back and visit another project.

[] 20th Century Fox - Apparently Fox has been having issues with their long gestating Planet of the Apes film. They've tinkered around with the damn thing so much even you've lost track of where it's meant to be. Maybe you could negotiate your way in to help produce a part of the film, and carve out a part of the box office as a result?
[] Dimension Films - Your old pal Robert Rodriguez is producing a film called Spy Kids that they don't see much potential in. Frankly it's a little too kiddy for you, but working with Robert is always nice.
[] Universal Pictures - You're hearing talk that Universal thinks Vin can be groomed to be one of their next box office stars. Something about some racing film coming up next year. Maybe you should try and lock that down on your own...
[] Walt Disney Studios - An animated film called Atlantis. A lot of good creative people behind, but not a lot of love from upstairs. Disney's never done science fiction, so they're looking to head off the worst.

Look, I love Atlantis. I'd love to produce it. But you never say no to a movie that canonically started a franchise that's still going super strong today.

Wow, that did really well at the box office and with the viewing audience.

Just like the original, it's gonna have a cult following. And on that note, let's get Vin the franchise while he's hot.

Well this is interesting.

Always loved this movie and hopefully it can become something more with some guidance and sacrifices to the dice.
