The Company
[X] [Origin] You are a Jorman from most ancient Jorgard. The Joric people are the oldest in the world for Jorgard endures, having survived multiple apocalypses and on its third pantheon. Located in the frozen north of Kalirea, you have known hardship and had the fortitude to survive. [X] [Companion] Thamara Akram is one of the hardy Kirman of the Great Desert. She has spent most of her life managing the supplies of her nomadic tribe, but now she is attempting the mercenary's life. Stewardship-Focused Companion.

You are Toldur Ironhand, proud Joric warrior and veteran sellsword. Coming from frozen and ancient lands of Jorgard, you have spent your adult life fighting for coin in the south. Falling into the companionship of Mergel Grundler, you joined her mercenary company, Mergel's Red Guard.

Under her leadership, you spent the next three years fighting for money as a soldier of fortune. Most of it was relatively boring guard duty for traders and nobles with coin to spare and things to protect, but you got a fair few fights in. A couple of clashes with the Imperial Legions, a fending off a pirate attack on a trade ship and even a year fighting for the Duchy of Suntom against the invading Daric Commonwealth.

But that was in the past and since then you have moved onto greater things. With plenty of experience under the belt and having amassed a small fortune, you decided to take charge of your own life and found your own mercenary company. Falling with a young Kirman lady by the name of Thamara Akram, the two of you hatched a plan.

While you had plenty of experience at actually being a mercenary, Thamar was pretty darn good at managing supplies and money. You would find some troops and lead them with your greater experience, Thamara would act as your right hand and handle the logistics of running a mercenary company.

All you had to do is find some troops and line up your first job.

What troops does your company start off with?
[] [Troops] You have a handful of likeminded individuals from your homeland of Jorgard, who have flocked to your leadership. While few in number, none can match Jorgardian warriors for quality. Start with 3 Jorgardian Infantry & 2 Jorgardian Hunters.
[] [Troops] You have found yourself a squad of retired Marlean Imperial Legionaries, who seek something more than what they could find in the Legions. Imperial Legionaries are good, disciplined troops who worked well as a unit. Start with 20 Imperial Legionaries.
[] [Troops] You have fallen with a squad of former Larian Royal Marines, having left the Royal Navy to find fortunes aboard. Royal Marines are the finest light infantry in the world. Start with 12 Royal Marines.
[] [Troops] You have acquired a good number of former militiamen and militiawomen, who have taken their arms and armour with them as they seek a more. Heavy Infantry are well-armoured and well-equipped, but more expensive to maintain. Start with 16 Heavy Infantry
[] [Troops] You have recruited a fair few youngsters who have potential even if they don't start with much. Light Infantry are agile and cheap, but can only take so much punishment before breaking. Start with 30 Light Infantry.
[] [Troops] You have rounded up some former hunters and poachers to filled your company with competent archers. Archers were like light infantry, but fight at range rather than in melee. Start with 24 Light Archers.

What special advantage do you and your company have?
[] [Special] Some of your soldiers is a competent magic user. A handful of your troops can use magic.
[] [Special] You are capable of using magic as a cleric of Mirra, the Lighting Soldier and Storm Goddess. Toldur can use magic.
[] [Special] Thamara is capable shaman, with a few old pacts and capable of forging new ones. Thamara can use magic.
[] [Special] You left your old company with a large fortune rather than a small one. Start off with twice as much Budget.
[] [Special] Your troops are especially loyal and reliable. Your starting troops will be extremely dependable.
[] [Special] When you left Jorgard, you took a runic sword with you. Gain a Joric Runic Sword.

What is your first job?
[] [Job] One of oligarchs in Commonwealth of Southron wants hire your company to support him and his forces in the Commonwealth' civil war against the Principality of Southron. Will be a supportive element of a larger army. Pitched battles possible, but unlikely and raiding and skirmishes will be far more likely. Risks unknown, but both sides of the Southron Civil War are equally matched. 10 Budget upfront and 50 Budget a month plus the right to keep your loot.
[] [Job] A Marlean noble wants to hire your company to take partake in the raid he is organising against the Seaborn Council for their recent uptick in piracy. Pirates are unlikely to be much of a threat and the biggest danger will be your ship sinking. Shouldn't be too difficult, but the Seaborn Council might have some tricks up their sleeve. 25 Budget upfront and 75 Budget once the job is complete plus a share of any loot.
[] [Job] A Torrin merchant wishes to hire your company to guard his trade caravan for a few months, maybe longer. Standard guard duty job for a trade caravan. Pretty safe barring any unexpected dangers. 8 Budget a week plus an extra 5 Budget upon safely arriving at destination.
[] [Job] A Shiran Clan wants to hire your company to guard their town after their native troops got all but wiped out in recent fighting. Unlikely to face any serious danger outside of an attack by a rival clan. 10 Budget a week plus an extra 5 Budget at the end of every month.

***

Okay, so the first vote is picking your first troops. There is a degree of quality vs quantity there, but different troops will result in different ways of getting things done. Furthermore, while it won't impact the initial list of jobs, what sort of troops your company has to offer will impact what job offers you receive as potential employers will want a company that fits what they need doing.

Second is your starting bonus. You can unlock magic at the start though you will have options to do so in the future regardless of what is chosen here. Otherwise you can get better troop quality, a magic sword for some personal martial buffs or double the amount of money you start off with.

Lastly, you got your starting job. Each one has a brief description plus how risky it will be along with what you will be getting paid. For those wondering, each turn will be a week, with four weeks equalling a month and twelve months equalling a year.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to. Feel to ask questions for more details and information.

@Oshha Just how good are Jorgardians, considering they give only 5 soldiers while all the other choices give at least a dozen?

Jorgard is acknowledged, no matter how reluctantly, to have the best soldiers in the world through the High Kingdom of Laria claims to have the best navy while the Marlean Empire claims to have the best army.

Mm. Low numbers of soldiers means that every loss is extremely biting, and when I want to look for what we want out of a larger unit I'm looking for a cohesive quality that binds them together.

Naturally, this reduces my choices down to either the Marlean Imperian Legionaires, who have experience forming up their own unit, or the heavy militia company, who have the same experience. I think that on balance while the militia company is heavy infantry while the Marlean Imperial Legionaires sounds like they might not be quite heavy infantry, Marlean Imperial Legionaires would have the stronger cohesive element far afield, and so thus they win.

[X] [Troops] You have found yourself a squad of retired Marlean Imperial Legionaries, who seek something more than what they could find in the Legions. Imperial Legionaries are good, disciplined troops who worked well as a unit. Start with 20 Imperial Legionaries.

When it comes to magic a similar calculus applies - while having one immensely powerful artifact or wizard would undoubtedly be a large boon for wherever it could be applied, multiple magic users gives us flexibility and safety to use it.

[X] [Special] Some of your soldiers is a competent magic user. A handful of your troops can use magic.

Thus, we have a contingent of a cohesive fighting force somewhere between light and heavy infantry capable of wielding magic in multiple locations. This does not give us a decisive advantage in the Southron Civil War, and while we're better suited for the naval action than most other combinations and the loot is promising, ultimately our priority should be building our numbers and drilling our forces. Thus in a choice between a roaming merchant caravan and defending the Shiran town this early in the game, the Shiran town wins out.

[X] [Job] A Shiran Clan wants to hire your company to guard their town after their native troops got all but wiped out in recent fighting. Unlikely to face any serious danger outside of an attack by a rival clan. 10 Budget a week plus an extra 5 Budget at the end of every month.

[X] Plan: A clan reborn
One of the lesser clans from Akram's homeland got excommunicated from the larger community at the annual gathering of all desert tribes. After raiding, burning and ritual erasing of all records, the remnants of the clan were being sold at slaver's auction. This is where Toldur Ironhand and Thamara Akram (herself in disgrace) come in and buy everyone they can afford.

[X] [Troops] You have recruited a fair few youngsters who have potential even if they don't start with much. Light Infantry are agile and cheap, but can only take so much punishment before breaking. Start with 30 Light Infantry.
[X] [Troops] You have rounded up some former hunters and poachers to filled your company with competent archers. Archers were like light infantry, but fight at range rather than in melee. Start with 24 Light Archers.
15 light infantry + 12 archers

while the Marlean Imperial Legionaires sounds like they might not be quite heavy infantry,

Imperial Legionaries have crossbows, shields, maces and some metal armour (breastplate, boots and gauntlets and a Barbute-style helmet) on top of gambeson. They act as sort of heavy troops, but work best as disciplined cohesive unit that works alongside other disciplined cohesive unit or as meatshields for formations of mages (only the Marlean Empire is capable of mass-producing battle-mages)

[X] Plan: A clan reborn

No plan voting for character creation stage. Plan voting will begin once you get to the CK2 style actions.

...so, these Marlean Imperial Legionaires are equipped with significant metal armor, are equipped with crossbows and maces for anti-armor work, and act as the forces to tie down other enemy heavy infantry forces while the battle mages are the artillery to their infantry.

They are equipped with armor and carry specifically anti-armor weaponry while fighting "as a cohesive unit" to protect artillery forces.

This really sounds like they're heavy infantry with more words, so I take it then that the militia explicitly called out as heavy infantry is equipped with even better gear, like full plate harnesses and pikes?

Well, it isn't so much specifically carrying anti-armour weapon as crossbows are easier to train conscripts with then regular bows and the magocratic government decided that a lump of metal on a stick works fine for smacking someone with if your troops somehow find themselves in melee combat. Through they have gotten pretty good at it due to constant low-level warfare with Jorgard for the last couple thousand years. Also, none of that equipment is high-quality, it is cheap stuff with which corners get cut to produce a lot of it. The Marlean mentality amongst its upper classes is very much 'elegant and noble magic does the real work whilst we can plug stop any gaps with easily replaced reserves of non-magical stuff'.

On paper, the Imperial Legions are very good, but in practice, they are handicapped by the nobility wanting something which looks good and then cutting corners to achieve it cheaply whilst also indulging their sense of magical supremacy. Also well-trained for the Imperial Legions means less good at fighting and war in general and more will follow orders without question and won't break even when being used as expendable meatshields. Imperial Legionaries work best when part of an army and empire that is meant to support them.

That said, plenty of potential employers will look at Imperial Legionaries and think the same thing that you did.

I figured greatswords or war hammers or battle axes or halberds rather than pikes and not quite full plate, but pretty much that or like the Imperial Legions, but with training and equipment of decent quality.

Hm. This actually changes the decisionmaking quite a bit. The militia heavy infantry, then, sound like they come from a tradition where the infantry are valued and thus will feel obligated to perform that way - meanwhile, we have inadvertently created the same conditions in the Marlean Imperial Army in our own infantry forces, and that will de-emphasize the value of our infantry (and they'll see it that way!), which will likely make on paper what should only be a slight advantage for the militia heavy infantry into a decisive advantage favoring the militia, who will hold the line when the legionaires break.

May I ask whether we use latest vote only for this vote? I just want to know whether I need to unvote my previous troop vote.

Imperial Legionaries will take far more to break than the militia unless you are talking about getting killed rather than morale, in which case, it is a toss up. Imperial Legionaries are a lot better on paper than in practice, but they are still pretty good in practice and could take on the heavy infantry just fine in a fight.

May I ask whether we use latest vote only for this vote? I just want to know whether I need to unvote my previous troop vote.

Latest vote and you will want to add in your votes for the other two tasks as well as you are currently only voting for troops.

Well...okay, if it's that much of a tossup between the Marlean Imperial Legionnaire morale and the militia heavy infantry morale, I think my original vote goes back to making sense - since clearly these guys are also heavy infantry, who will have mage support by the Special vote.

Tossup of getting killed between the Imperial Legionaries and the Heavy Infantry. Morale-wise, the Imperial Legionaries are far superior to the Heavy Infantry. A fight between the two would go to Imperial Legionaries if they fought as units, but the Heavy Infantry would in one-on-one fights.

Are light infantry just faster on foot, or are they dragoons, travelling with horses?

On foot, but due to wearing and carrying less, they are more agile and mobile through not as good in a fight.

The vote is still open.
