You've started to assemble the basics of a routine, you think. It may not be what you want to do forever, but it is comforting to walk the same path you've walked before, to slowly begin to feel comfortable in your environment. To trust that the step forward will not be meaningfully different from the last - That the ground will not be yanked out from under you. Your changes feel almost mundane - More Scouts, adding flickering wings to their invisible bodies. They produce a slight hum when active, but you think that'll hardly be noticeable, especially if you're careful. Mouths are re-added to Super Spy, hiding in gaps and holes. Tunneler continues to dig and dig.
You could get used to this. But every time you think about it, you are reminded of the dangers. Of the people who clearly need your help. You have to remember - Your goal is not so simple as merely survival, it is to spread
love and
justice and
happiness! You are a
Magical Girl! And it's time to start showing it. Soon, at least. (A new
goal has been added!) And, uh, while you know the gist of being a Magical Girl in your heart, perhaps figuring out the more specific societal context they exist in would also be good. You'll ask about that, today! You start with Sabrina, since she's the one you can actually trust to give you a low-down with the full understanding of your situation. You catch her as she's eating breakfast with her mother, who serves you a plate as well - Which is
great. (Gain

"You're calling yourself one without even knowing what they are?" You pout slightly. "I know what they are! Kinda. In the abstract! I know I'm one." Sabrina flicks her tongue out, narrowing her eyes at your pouting. "Alright, alright…I guess I'll tell you what an
Orion City Magical Girl is, then, rather than what being a girl mage is. It all started out with Orion Starlight's emergence onto the scene, a few years back…"
What's a Magical Girl?
Magical Girls are a recent social movement that has emerged out of, in academic terms, youth dissatisfaction, economic desperation, and the growing pains of Aleria as an independent nation rather than a colonial property. In less academic terms, people are poor, the system doesn't help them, and the kids are pissed off about it. It's prevalent mostly in Orion City, where it originated, but masks and pseudonyms as a cover for social activism and vigilantism are rapidly becoming in vogue the country over. Masked Men, Mystery Vigilantes, and Secret Soldiers are but a few of the various divergent trends. Still, that's getting off-track.
In Orion City, while there had been a few vigilantes and vigilante gangs operating, the real kick-off was when Orion Starlight emerged onto the scene. A teenaged girl, wearing a mask and costume that clearly had been homemade, took down the Eighth Street Strangler single-handedly and then marched up to the City Central Court to publicly throw him at the feet of the Orion City Judicial Society. With him, she nailed to the door of the court a manifesto that excoriated the courts and Guard for their corruption, denounced corporate influence, and called for a truly Republican Aleria. Within hours, it was the talk of the town, and her manifesto became the subject of a dozen reprintings and editorials. Obviously, it had been banned shortly thereafter, but by that time, it was already everywhere, as was her image. Whatever else you can say about her, she certainly struck a figure.
Ever since she's been leading her own little clique of mages. They intersperse their more overt political activism with aiding the unfortunate and downtrodden. They put out factory fires, help hospitals in the slum districts, and generally win the heart of the public more successfully than most others have. If any of the Guard tried to arrest her and hers while they were doing that, they'd have been hung from the streetlamps by the public, and they know it, so they just stay back, if they don't outright help her. Still, she was just the spark - Ever since the fire was lit, seems like every mage who comes into their powers decides to throw on a mask and cloak to take to the streets in favor of their favorite cause, and a lot of them are a lot worse at it than she is.
The local Necrocrat League sponsors their own little paramilitary wing of them, which is one of the better ones, and I wouldn't be surprised if most political organizations didn't count at least one of them as a member at this point. But when you throw a bunch of untrained mages eager to fight crime or lead a revolution single-handedly into the mix of the day-to-day of the city, you wind up with a lot of chaos. Still, most people remember how it started - And the good ones outweigh the bad, really. Oh! And they aren't all girls, either, but the general term is girl, cause, you know. So, that's what a magical girl is, at the core of it - A mage who decides to operate outside the law in favor of what she thinks is right.
You nod, excitedly, on hearing this. "Right! Absolutely. That makes complete sense." Ms. Johnson shakes her head. "Bah. You paint far too rosy a picture of them, Sabrina! They're criminals - Pure and simple." She stares directly at Sabrina, Sabrina stares back, and you think you've been caught in the middle of something private! "Thank you, Ms. Johnson, for breakfast, but I need to go get to work!" She glances away from Sabrina, towards you, and smiles. "Of course, Scarlet, it's always a pleasure! Now, if only
someone else around here would get a
real job." You skip out the door as the sound of an argument erupts behind you. You've got to get to Laurel's Boxing!
After your arrival, you get to work cleaning and wiping things down, waiting for an opportune moment to ask your next question. "Laurel? What do you think about Magical Girls?" Laurel looks at you strangely, even as she hoists up a weight for you to wipe under. "Cowardly - Inefficient, too. Hiding their faces, hiding their names. Are they criminals? Maybe. Teenage rebels? Perhaps. Justified in what they do? Not my place to say. But they ought to do it in the daylight." She sighs, setting the weight down. "No point in it, otherwise. Nobody mourns the nameless. Half the people watching watch to see them unmasked and go down. They're delighting in the thrill of it, not whatever they claim to fight for." You frown, but listen…and take internal notes, as you get back to cleaning.
Your next opportunity comes only a few minutes later, once Laurel leaves you to your own devices. "Hey, Mister Sydney? What do you think about Magical Girls?" Sydney's in the gym today, working away at a punching bag. You can tell he's not using his full strength, otherwise he'd punch clean through, but that it's more about…keeping his form in practice, you think. And perhaps training his restraint, as well! He glances down at you, a little surprised. "Huh? Uh, well…I gotta give the Guard line on that, first, I guess, which is that they're dangerous criminals…but everyone knows that's bullshit, same as their constant speeches about 'gangs'. They're a bunch of young mages who sewed up or magicked up costumes and are using their powers to rebel against the system. Who didn't, when they first mastered magic? I remember I was a real firecracker, back in the day. I got in a lotta fights I didn't need to, wound up rolling through the workhouses a few times, even. Maybe not to their extent, though. Them, though…they're at a sorta tipping point, I think. Either their whole thing blows over in the next few years, just as fast as it emerged, and they die down with it, or they turn into an actual movement with staying power and simmer down the illegal stuff. Right now, I'd say they're more towards the former than the latter..." He glances down at you and chuckles at something you can't figure out. "But I'm obviously biased! I bet those Runvish officials said the same thing 'bout the necrocrats, eh?" You nod, and he chuckles again. "Alright, Scarlet - Don't get yourself into any trouble out there, you hear? I don't wanna have to pick you up for disturbing the peace!" He makes a mock-stern face and waggles his finger at you, even as you nod. You definitely won't get picked up by anyone, even if you do wind up getting into trouble.
After your payment from Laurel (and your less official payment from the courtyard dumpster, gaining
1 Biomass), you skip over to Roy's office. It's been a while since you checked in on the man, and you figured dropping by to say hello would be nice! You knock politely, and the same gruff voice emanates from within. "Come in!" He's holding up a piece of paperwork to the light when you enter, not paying attention. "So, is it-" He glances over. "You're not the plumber." His one eye blinks, focusing on you. "...You're the one who came in here a while ago, aren't you. Why're you back?" The question seems to be borne of genuine surprise.
"To ask you some more questions, Mister Ridley!" He grumbles a bit. "
First time anyone's come back here when they didn't have to, just my luck…" He sighs, setting down the piece of paper he was holding. "Alright, what're your questions? Make them quick - The plumber's going to be back any minute." You tilt your head and think for a second. Hmm…while you're going to ask him about Magical Girls, a more pressing thought has come up in your mind. "Are they going to put up any new posters around here? In the lobbies of the buildings, you know." He blinks. "...Don't think so? Cursed things-" He says this, but you don't think he
means it. Not like you would, if you had said it. "-aren't hung up often, only when the Corporates get a bee buzzing up their-" A quick pause, as if a gear is shifting in his head. "-Bonnet. Anyways, why? Bored of seeing the same ones all the time?" He laughs, a quick and harsh sound. You tilt your head and then nod. Simpler than the real reason. He laughs again. "Hey, me too, lady." Regardless, that's good. That means that there won't be any more 'leaking' ones, you think. But you can't tell which posters hanging around might be normal, or which might be just properly contained ones…not without prying them out of their frames, and that has its own set of risks. You'll need to get a better view of them…somehow.
"Anything else?" You return to the moment. "Oh, yes! Mister Ridley - What do you think about Magical Girls?" He raises an eyebrow. "...Boy, really switching it up on me, huh…" He gives it a moment of genuine thought. "...Better for the property value than the Guard is. The boss doesn't like 'em, but I'd rather them than the gangs. Say what you will about their politics, and gods know they've certainly got strange ones, but ever since they started doing their thing, I've not once had some tough barge in here, talking about 'insurance' and 'soliciting donations'. Not that it was a frequent occurrence before, but it did happen! Not that I gave them anything, of course." He pats his desk, like one would pat a dog. "I've got my ways of scaring off anyone who'd think about laying a hand on
my property." He speaks it with a tone of ownership - He may not legally own it, but he feels as if it's his. Hm…Interesting. But also a point against ever bringing up your current living situation to him. Your musings are interrupted by a knock on the door. "That's the plumber, lady - So now's your time to clear out, mhm? Have yourself a good day." He waves you out, and a mustachioed man enters. You can hear faint discussion behind you as you skip forward.
Alright, then. You've got your payment, and that means more
food! You quickly make your purchases at Jeremy's, then retreat back to your building to share it with Martin…who isn't present! Huh. You set about to preparing it, even as you set about looking for him. The group of Scouts takes to the skies, scattering across the rooftops - And they find him, sitting atop a neighboring one. He's talking with someone - Oh, it's Sabrina! She seems to be giving him some more of his medicine. You flit in closer and see her tongue flicker in and out like it does when she's irritated and worried about something. "-you have to remember, alright, Martin?
One spoonful a night. And don't take it in front of the kid - Don't share it with her,
nothing. Got it? If my
host finds out I'm still doing this, and, worse, that I'm involving her new favorite child, she'll kick me out, so don't make me regret this." He nods, fervently. "You won't, I promise, yep, I really do. I-You know I can't pay much, times have been hard, for everyone, but, you know, but I've been scrounging up for a while to try and give you a fair price, more than just scraps, especially since Scarlet's been buying me food, real food, not just scraps, and I even found a place that'll give me a second chance for-" She holds up a hand. "Don't. Just, don't, man. Focus on getting yourself out of your hole, first. Consider this-" She points to the filled bottle. "-a loan. And not a monetary one. I'll need a favor from you, at some point, when the heat dies down, and this is the down payment on that." He keeps nodding, even as you flit away. Hm. Interesting. You're not quite sure what to think of this. At least the rooftops are pretty. This is the first real time you've explored a bit up here, and it's quite beautiful! In the distance, the sea churns, and above you, the clouds circle. From here, you could almost think you're on top of the world itself.
(You've discovered - Somewhat later than I thought you would, hah,
The City From On High! Rather than a 'traditional location', the City From On High guarantees the discovery of a new location, a new sub-area in a previously discovered location, meeting a character, finding two characters talking to each other, finding something interesting…you get the gist. Think of it as rolling the dice, or generating a random encounter. There are quite a few things that can only happen through exploring the City From On High…but it doesn't exactly count towards 'familiarizing' yourself with an area. And, unfortunately, you can't spread yourself up there. Yet.)
Meanwhile, down below ground, you're focusing more on stabilizing what you've gained. Your tunnels are stabilized, the entrance (or hidden peepholes) into your discoveries are formalized, and you carve out slightly higher portions, for easier passage…or perhaps for spreading into, now that you've established that it's pretty safe. However, you think in terms of strictly exploring the Underground of Your Street, you've hit something of a brick wall - Somewhat literally! All that's really left are the
Sewer and the
Basements to check out, though in the process you'll have enough to chow down on to constitute at least a few more chunks of
biomass. (The
Underground has been updated to the
Underground of Your Street!
Your Tunnels have been added as a sub-area! Traditional exploration of the Underground has hit a wall - Explore unexplored sub-areas to finish learning about the area! Also, gain
1 Biomass.)
When Martin re-appears downstairs, it is with a meal prepared for him, and you politely waiting. He stammers a bit. "O-oh, uh, I didn't keep you waiting, to eat, like, did I? Sorry, I'm really sorry, uh, I was, you know-" You put up a hand. "You don't have to explain yourself, Martin! Just sit down and eat, the food's getting stiff!" He nods, grateful, and starts to dig in. You can see the full bottle in his pocket. You don't know enough to judge…but you know he hasn't been taking just one spoonful. And you doubt that's about to change. That may be a problem - But that doesn't mean you can't take a moment to simply enjoy the present. You're having a meal with a friend. And that's what comes first, right now.

Explore a newly discovered location or sub-area! Make sure to specify which asset is exploring - This will have an impact on what may or may not be discovered! Feel free to include write-in instructions if you so desire.
Sometimes, you need to play defense - Or simply linger in an area you've been before! This means patrolling that area and finding out what's changed about it, or if it's going to change in the future. This will do any jobs that are in the area as well.
Frederick was such a nice young man, you feel at least a little obligated to visit! Sure, you don't have any money, but you're sure you can talk your way into it, to at least watch or something. And maybe you'll even see Frederick again!
Note: Visiting here will unlock a new Location. You can assume this of most 'visit' actions.
You're visiting this place with Sabrina to investigate it! So that you can shut it down, because it probably seems to be evil!
You need to deal with the Poster, and there's only one way to find out how - Experimentation. Throw something at the poster and see what happens. Note: This may cause damage to whatever assets you throw at the Poster.
Create an asset and pick as many keywords as you'd like for them, so long as you have the Biomass!
Recyle an asset or parts of an asset. Make sure to specify which asset and/or which keywords. Important Note: This can be done in the same 'turn' in which you create a new asset with the biomass from the old asset!
You currently have the Immutable Keywords of Magical Biohorror, Broadcaster, Immobile, and Idealist. You have the normal keywords of Cute, Pactmaker, Split, Perceptive, Likeable, Refresh, and Recorder. You may add keywords to this, which will not be immutable and can be recycled and changed as you wish!
Choose a
sub-area of interest in a
fully explored location and you may spread your core flesh there for 1 Biomass and with the permission of the inhabitants (if any)! This will have a number of benefits, such as applying Core Keywords to the sub-area in question, if applicable, the passive accumulation of biomass from allies in the sub-area if possible (negating the need for even a patrol action), and other, area-specific bonuses and benefits, both to yourself and to inhabitants.
This will be necessary to unlock future Biomass options.
QM's Note: Standard 12 hour moratorium and 48 hours voting! Tell me if I made any errors!
