Hey, I wonder if we can go see Sheogorath and have him make us an honorary Manic?

We already have the requisite number of voices in our head...

we need to level grind our skills before we hit the Isils of madness if a bandit can injure us.

now we need a blind bandit and a few hours off constant sneaking for us to become the sneakeyst being alive ( ish)

an Immortal target that dosent mind us beating the crap out if it.

a Ton of Iron and leather so we start grinding our smithing

and of course we need to eat a book to learn magic!

I can testify to the usefulness of this. I had a 100 in both Smithing and Enchanting, and never used deadric artefacts or special weapons/armour because they were actually worse then my gear, even when they were upgraded. I did something like 200 damage per strike?

Hey this is the spirit of RPG gamer here can we improve our shoddy swordsmanship first before we try to learning a different style of fighting?

actually the system seems to be based on TES 4. weapons are grouped into Blunt and Bladed, so its possible that spears will use the same skill that swords do...

[X] Our sword skill sucks! we need to get to work on that stay close to the door and do practice swings ( away from the entrance)
-[X] basic attack Flurry ( 4 quick strikes)
-[X] Power thrust
-[X] Standing power strike
[X] when that's done start doing basic strikes again

Why not do something moderately sensible for once?

Who knows? You might like it!

standing off to the side of the inn and swing our sword around like a nutjob is sensible?

besides, this isn't The Gamer, attack skills only increase if you attack a valid living target.
Compared to pretty much everything else currently suggested? Yes. Yes it is.

I am perfectly aware of the elder scrolls levelling mechanics, but it is unclear whether they are being used in this quest, particularly their more arbitrary aspects, like the one you mentioned.

Given that we are rusty enough to let our sword fly from our grip in combat, we kinda need the practice.

Wh8ile you are here, can I get clarification on whether running through weapons drills is of any merit whatever?
I just write stuff, you need @Verminlord1 for stuff like that but we did discuss it so I do know this one :lol Training isn't gonna get you as much 'XP' or whatever towards the skill but it does grant you a smaller amount.

Does the tree count as a legitimate target for damage?

For 'Training' only. As my fellow GM said, non-legitimate targets get reduced points towards the skill. Also repeating the same type of training will give diminishing returns. Hitting a tree will not a master swordsman create.

..... it's an inanimate object. I'm gonna tentatively say no, when my co-gm gets back online he can overrule/reinforce what I just said.
Well, actually, they are technically animate objects, being alive, and capable of a degree of motion and growth.

There is even some cutting-edge research that indicates that plants actually perform some pretty basic information processing, as well.

In practical terms, though, fair call. "It was growing at me imperceptibly slowly" does not constitute any form of challenge or threat.
