I wonder if I should make it so that you guys get to ask various questions about the setting. It would let you guys kinda roleplay by having your questions be asked by the Wanderer to the various characters she is with. It would give me something to do while I'm writing the next major event, while letting you guys participate more in the world.
EDIT: For example, you can ask a question in the thread right now, and either Duncan or Noel could answer it for you if they have the answers to. The same will apply to the other characters that you meet later in the story.
What do you guys think???
Also, would you guys like to have your own Wanderers appear in the story to help the protagonist on jobs? I can probably put together some kind of character sheet for you guys.

That's fine too! I didn't intend for it to be anything too big. I remember reading another quest where the OP allowed us to ask questions about the setting and it would be relayed to us in the form of in-universe explanations from the characters. It's just for if you want things clarified in the setting, or want to know more about a particular place or thing that isn't explained to your liking by the main events. It would not be anything huge, but just be simple questions that would be answered in smaller semi-IC posts. That way you could at least get to see more of the worldbuilding while I'm working on the next main event post. So overall it is not too much work on your end. You just ask a question and I'll answer it via an NPC answering the question as if the Wanderer had asked the question.
For the most part, I would be writing about the characters you give me. I would, of course try to be as in-character as I could according to the Character Sheet. I don't want to have to burden you with having to contribute to the quest as well, since most people often just enjoy reading quests and participating in them. The CS would come with a personality section, so I would have an idea of how they act and what kind of person they would be. In a sense, it would be kind of a surprise too, because you would get to see how I interpret your character. Of course, if I do something about your character that you don't like, you're free to PM me and I can make appropriate changes. On the flip side, you can choose to do nothing and see how your character develops over the course of the story since there are still a bunch of things that you don't know yet about the setting. lol, even I haven't completely figured out the setting yet... xD
I thought it might be a good idea, since it would let you guys see your wanderers doing stuff, while giving me a good writing exercise since I'm writing about characters who's personalities I may not like very much or agree with, or maybe their personalities are just hard for me to write since I'm so used to writing certain character archetypes. I guess I just want to add more fun and flavor to the quest too.
Hm...well, writing exercises are good--basically the entirety of my current quest is one--but I'm not sure about the amount of time I have available...

Oh. Well the idea was that I would be doing most of the writing. All you have to do is give me a character. So it is hopefully not too much work on your part beyond making a character. :3
Ah, I just realized my concept art has some spoilers... if you guys still want to see it I'll still post it up. Probably tomorrow since I am off work.
[X] You are more of the Philosophical sort. While it was true that in the wild practicality and rationality often ruled one's actions, there was nothing wrong with thinking of other possibilities and meanings in life. After all, you have found that it helps to keep you going on those days where you've felt that a bullet to the brain was the only form of respite you had left. [X] You believe that cooperation is ideal. After all, no one makes it out there alone by themselves. Having people to watch your back is always a welcome relief. Wanderers may have found artifacts that have made life better for the settlements, but it has always been the townspeople and the soldiers who have made sure that there was a settlement for Wanderers to come back to after their long journeys. Working together always has its benefits. [X] Offer to watch over Noel as Duncan waits in line.
---
"It's alright." You interrupt them suddenly. You find them both looking at you as you clear your throat. "I can watch over her while you wait in line."
You see Noel's face light up as she gasps softly in surprise. Duncan, however makes a face full of concern. "Hmm... well... I'm not too sure I can just let her go around with a stranger. I know you are our guest... but still..."
"I-it's okay." Noel protests. "I-I think mister here is a good person."
She still thinks you're a man. You chuckle softly at the thought of this, but decide to let it go. It probably won't matter too much in the long run. You probably won't be seeing them too much after you leave the settlement anyway.
"Hmm..." You see Duncan squint really hard and rub his chin. "Well, alright." He finally relents "Our friend here doesn't seem too bad." He then turns to you. "I think you're alright too. They often say that I'm not too good at reading people, but I think I'm right on the money with you!" He then laughs heartily, although it feels a bit overly enthusiastic. You guess probably to give the little girl some peace of mind.
"Alright." You say with a smile, although you realize quickly that your scarf is covering half your face. "I'll watch over her with my life."
--- [X] You mean what you say.
[X] Say it just to give him peace of mind.
[X] Say it to give yourself some peace of mind.
---
"Quite the bold words." Duncan says, but then he sticks out his fist and extends his thumb upwards. "But I like your dedication! You guys can get going first, I will catch up shortly. Please enjoy yourselves!"
"Uhh... right." You reply, a bit overwhelmed by his enthusiasum. This guy was like a walking fireblossom.
"A-ah! Then, let's get going mister!" Noel exclaims. She grips your hand, and with a strength you thought wasn't possible for a kid her age she pulls you along through the busy crowd, laughing all the way.
"W-woah! Wait a second!" You grip your cap, pulling it down over your head so that it doesn't fall off. You figure she must be pretty strong since she's a mechanic. Maybe she's just excited. Or maybe you're just exhausted.
"Let's do this one first!" She pulls you sideways to a nearby stall. You see an older couple standing over a large wooden bin filled with water. There seem to be quite a few other children crowded around and shouting and yelling amongst one another. Noel goes and picks an open spot, she pulls out a card and hands it over to the couple. At this point you tower over the children, so you step forward behind them and steal a glance down into the large bin. It is well made, you can see the waterproof varnish layered over the smooth frame. Little fish swim are swimming inside, dodging the paper net scoops used by the children to catch them. "Would you like to try?" Noel asks.
"Sure." You say. "It looks like fun."
You figure that since you're already here you should probably enjoy yourself for a bit. It shouldn't be too hard, you figure. It was a child's carnival game after all. It should be no problem for you compared to the dangers of the Eden frontier.
After all you were a Wanderer, someone who braved the dangers of the frontier alone with nothing but her wit and skill and maybe a little luck. A little carnival game should be no problem for you.
Or so you thought...
"Oh, not like that Wanderer." Noel tells you as you meet with your first failure.
"A-ah, you have to be a little more gentle with it." You scrunch your face slighly as you watch your paper net dissolve.
"Heehee, the fish are all swimming away from you!"
Eventually you are left standing with nothing but a handful of broken paper nets and a strange crushing sense of complete defeat. To add insult to injury, you notice that Noel has a little glass jar with three little fish already swimming inside.
"W-well... I-I've been doing this for awhile so..." She gives you a nervous smile. "Would you like to try again?"
"I'll kindly pass." You breathe an exasperated sigh, but give her a reassuring smile. "So, where else would you like to go?"
"Ah! Over there." She points to stalls further down the path.
Hand in hand, Noel leads you to the next nearest stall. You think that it's nice that she is letting you play some games while Duncan is getting tickets. She must really like you, you figure, or maybe she hasn't had a chance to go with anyone. Duncan always seemed like he would be busy in military affairs, being a high-ranking officer, while Mr. Rodriguez with his memories of the Old World was stuck in his shop teaching the new mechanics how to fix the various vehicles and machines needed for Alphonse's defense. It makes you wonder how two such men came to know such a carefree little girl like Noel. It certainly seemed a bit out of place, you figure.
--- [X] However, you brush that thought aside. In Eden there were people who came from all walks of life, you yourself included. You you have no right to question how they came to be. Besides, it's good that a girl like Noel happens to be familiar with two seemingly good guys with straight heads.
[X] You decide not to worry too much about it, but keep your suspicions in the back of your mind. Hopefully there was nothing strange going on. You'd much rather prefer to believe in this rather peaceful and thriving settlement that Duncan and Noel have shown you.
---
You try not to indulge yourself too much despite the young girl's insistence. It's her hard-earned money after all. Although the thought of a young child spoiling someone much older than them was a rather amusing one.
The two of you spend the next few hours playing more carnival games together--or rather, it seems like Noel is insistant on getting around to playing all of them. You find many of them just as difficult as the previous ones, although you don't mind as you see Noel having the time of her life: a bright smile plastered on her face as she boasts about her carnival game skills to you. To your luck you seem to redeem yourself in the shooting gallery, much to Noel's chagrin as you watch the girl miss all of her shots. At least your marksmanship skills haven't dulled, and thankfully the airguns seem to be in good working condition. You admit, you've never really tried shooting at something that wasn't trying to kill you. It's a bit relieving to say the least, if not a little odd and strange. At Noel's insistence you play a few more times, getting more comfortable to the gun and managing to hit dead center in the targets each time. Your shooting wasn't the best, definitely not among the other Wanderers, but at that distance it was easy, almost child's play. You make your last shot as Noel tries stubbornly to score a hit. The man hands you a stack of prize tickets, which you stare at curiously.
"Take your pick. You must be a Wanderer yes?" A middle-aged man asks you.
"Yeah." You reply, rubbing the back of your head sheepishly. You figure you're probably doing him some bad business. "Sorry about that."
To your surprise though, he doesn't seem too upset. "Don't worry about it." He chuckles. "We don't get many Wanderers in here during the festival. You folks always seem to be too busy trying to kill yourselves running out there into the forests. It's good to know that you guys enjoy a little downtime too like the rest of us."
"Well, we're only human after all right?" You remark.
"A-again!" You hear Noel exclaim. She has a determined, if not somewhat stubborn look on her face. She holds up another card to the man, who reloads her airgun. Five shots for one punch on the card, you take note.
"You must be here with Noel huh?" The man continues. "The kid has been here for the last three years trying to win a prize from my stall. It's too bad that she's such a poor shot."
"It's not like she's practicing with the soldiers though right?" You remark. You eye her form. At least she has a good grasp on the rifle, no doubt coming from her dexterity as a mechanic working with Mr. Rodriguez in the shop.
"I-I hit one!" The girl exclaims happily after about twenty more tries. The two of you go to the other end of the booth, where you exchange your tickets for prizes. You give her the prize tickets you have won. It's not like they were really yours to begin with anyway, since you won them using her money. She looks at you, a bit apprehensive, a bit surprised, a bit joyful. "I-I can have these?" Her emerald irises stare at you curiously.
"Think of it as me paying you back for letting me have some fun." You say offering a smile.
"O-okay!" She takes the tickets from you and eyes the prize wall intently. You figure this must have been the first time she actually won anything from this stall. She looks back at you, her eyes seemingly asking 'What would you like?'
"Go ahead and choose what you want." You wave her away with a reassuring look. "This will probably be your first time right?"
"O-okay!" She exclaims. "I-I'll be right back!"
After a few moments you somehow end up staring at a squeeky hammer in your hand.
"I-It's cute right!" Noel exclaims. She clutches a fox mask to her chest that she picked out. "I-I thought you would like it..." Her voice seems to shrink into a squeek as the last word leaves her slighly chapped lips.
"Oh..." You stare at the toy hammer. "Thanks..."
--- [X]"How am I supposed to use this?" [Practical] [X]"I guess it might have some use... someday..." [Optimistic] [X] "This is... cute...?" [Puzzled]
---
"Umm! I-I thought that maybe you might like something..." She begins. You notice her expression falling "Y-you know... umm... I-I wanted... maybe thought that... I should get... you something... as th-thanks for helping me out... umm..." She trails off, her voice is a bit nervous. You see she's been avoiding your gaze for a few moments now, and seems to have found the dirt extremely interesting to look at.
--- [X]"I'll treasure it Noel. Thank you." She seems to have given it her all in choosing a gift for you. You can't seem to recall the last time you have been shownsuch kindness, from both her and Duncan. [X]"I don't think I'll be able to take this with me Noel. I'm sorry." As much as you'd like to have it, it ultimately is of no use to you in the wilderness. [X] "I'm sorry but this is pretty useless to me." You don't have room or time to mess around with toys.

Items Obtained
Squeeky Hammer:"A toy hammer made from wood and rubber and given away as a prize during the Festival of the Skylights. It is red and yellow in color and squeeks when striking something. It is fairly robust and isn't too heavy. Perfect for a child to play with!"
- Condition: [][][][][]
- <Memento>Given to you as a gift from Noel. This item signifies the bond the that the two of you share. Bonds are an irreplacable item in Eden, as comrades are few and far in between. Those scarce connections that you can find are always worth holding on to.
Glass Jar with Fishes: "A symbol of your first defeat. You are holding it for Noel while she plays more of the festival games. The fishes are fairly small and are an orange and cream color with notably large and vibrant fins. They seem to be of a common species found in Eden, as you recall seeing a few of them swimming about the vinepools in the frontier. It appears that they make great pets"
Prize Tickets: "Tickets used for prizes at game stalls. They all seem interchangeable which makes it easier for children to collect them for specific prizes. It doesn't seem like they have much use beyond the festivities however, but the dry, dusty paper would probably make for excellent fire starter material.
- Condition: [][][]
- Number: 2 Tickets; You gave the rest to Noel, but accidentally left a few in your pocket.

Can't really not treasure it, not after that bit in the spoiler box.

--- {X} You speak to Duncan with the weight of your heart behind your words, but at the same time you can't help but say those words in some vain attempt to ease your own mind as well. The thought of making promises takes your mind to dark places, and you try to think about something else. Now is not the time...

{X} "This is... cute...?" You can't figure out how that girl thinks this thing is cute. People must have strange tastes, you figure. You quickly push the thought of Noel wearing a chubby hammer costume out of your mind. Turns out you're not too different. Figures... You should probably sleep soon. [Puzzled]
{X} You decide to hold onto the hammer Noel has given you. The girl's feelings seem genuine enough to you, and while a dark feeling lurks in the back of your mind you decide to accept them anyways. Who knows? Maybe this hammer will come in handy to you!
---
"I'll treasure it Noel. Thank you." Your answer seems to catch her by surprise. Her eyes widen as she hears your words. You can swear you see even her big hat jump slightly.
"O-oh..." She looks up at you, clutching her fox mask tight, her eyes looking at you. You can't help but notice that she's quite adorable. "... r-really?"
"Really." You gaze back at her. Not blinking. You were never really good with kids, so you've always treated them like any other person.
"R-really really?"
"Really really."
"Y-you're just not trying to be nice are you?" She pouts a bit, teary-eyed.
"I wouldn't take it if I didn't like it." You reassure her. Your faceless expression breaks into a smile to reinforce your words.
"O-oh... okay..." She wipes her eyes and laughs softly with relief. "I-I remembered that maybe you wouldn't be able to use it for anything... s-so I thought that maybe you wouldn't like it..."
"It's alright." You say. You hold the hammer in one hand and swing it around a few times. It is incredibly well-balanced, almost terribly so. You could probably give someone a good jar if you whacked them in the face hard enough with this. Never mind how incredibly silly it would look, though you figure it'd be far more humiliating to the unfortunate victim than you.
Your new "weapon" obtained, and Noel's spirits lifted, you turn to her and ask, "Where shall we go next?"
Noel brings a finger to her lips in a thinking gesture as she ponders the next activity. Her eyes light up after a few moments as she decides what to do next. "O-oh! Would you like to light some lanterns?"
"Lanterns?" You thought she might have wanted to play some more games. There seemed to still be a number of stalls left over that the two of you haven't visited yet, nevermind the food stands that you had to pass up. The thought of food makes your stomach grumble again for the hundredth time, and the hunger pains return to you. Although you admit that it was mostly your fault in that regard, since you never bothered to tell anyone that you haven't eaten in well over a day... or was it two? It was hard to remember sometimes. You look around and notice that much of the day has passed since you first walked through the gates of Alphonse, and the day is now growing darker. Time passed more quickly than you had anticipated, you must have really enjoyed yourself for once.
A couple brushes past you. You notice a box-like object being carried in their arms. It seems to be framed with a dark-colored wood and covered in a pale sheet of paper. It isn't too large either. You could probably carry it under your arm if you wanted, but it looks a bit too fragile for any rough handling.
"Those must be the lanterns." You say, eyeing them curiously.
"Yup!" Noel says. "We can buy some over there." She points to a street where a small crowd is beginning to gather under a few tents. "There are a bunch of different colors too!"
"Oh... but I don't have any money." You point out to her. Taking note of the time of day, you add, "Maybe we should go find Duncan first. He's probably looking for us."
"A-ah, you're right." Noel looks a bit worried. She pauses and you watch as her eyes suddenly widen in horror at the realization before her mouth drops . "Ohhh!!! W-we totally lost track of time! Mister Duncan will be so mad!"
Duncan? Mad? "I don't think so." You reassure her. The thought of Duncan laughing merrily about the two of you having a good time at the festival is the only thing you can think of that comes to mind. It's probably wrong to make such an assumption, but you feel that you aren't really that far off either.
"B-but we just left him there!" She exclaims, her voice full of worry.
"He said it would be okay."
"B-but what if he's been looking for us this whole time!?"
"I'm sure he can handle himself."
"B-but he didn't get to play with us!"
"Maybe he's playing right now."
"We should go find him!"
"By the way? Are you hungry?"
"Wha... eh?"
As you look at Noel's confused face, you realize you are just as confused as she is.
"Umm... well..." You look away, slightly embarassed. You've never been more glad to have a scarf hiding your face as you have been now. But you manage to save face quickly. "It's been a long day and you haven't really eaten anything."
Your hunger must be getting to you, and you feel a bit guilty about suggesting food just so you can get some for yourself--even if it was unintentional.
Thankfully, the girl presses a small hand against her stomach, a look of embarrassment on her face. "Um... well... I guess... a little..." She gives you an equally flustered smile, her cheeks slightly red, whether from the cold or her growling stomach you can't tell. "I-I forgot I haven't eaten anything since I was helping Mr. Rodriguez.... ehehe..." She frowns again, although this time she seems to be talking more to herself albeit audibly. "I wonder if Mister Duncan will want to eat with us too..."
Unfortunately, she seems to have a hard time deciding what to do next. You wonder if perhaps you should take the lead this time...
--- [X] Agree to light the lanterns.
[X] Suggest looking for Duncan.
[X] Suggest getting something to eat.

A/N: A short one. Between being sick and not being able to sleep, and a severe case of writer's bloc, I have managed to get something out. Enjoy for now!
