Skylight Festival - Part I
[X] [Understanding]
[X] Go with Noel to see the town.

-[X] But mention that Duncan also offered to show you around, you need to tell him that you're going with Noel instead. Or maybe you could go together all three of you?
---

You glance at Noel's eyes, nervous but hopeful. It's actually a bit adorable. Were all kids like this?

"Umm... alright." You relent finally.

"O-Oh!" She seems rather surprised by your answer. "Umm... let me grab my coat then! I'll be right back! Don't go anywhere!"

"Wait! I need to--"

She hurries off before you can call out to her. You notice there is a room in the far corner of the garage. It's quite large, and there are a few windows to give you a glimpse inside. Lockers and shelves. It must be the changing room.

You sigh but a small smile inches its way across your face. Noel seemed rather happy that you were able to accompany her. However, a pang of guilt strikes you as you remember agreeing to having Duncan show you around.

"Hmm... maybe we could all go together..." You think to yourself as you make your way outside. Standing under the plastic tarp along with a few other mechanics, you glance quickly around the service district while making sure to stay somewhere Noel can see you. The humvee that you came in with is still there. The driver seems to have passed out in the seat. You figure he must have been tired driving you and the other soldiers around all morning.

Duncan's figure emerges from the radio tower. He notices you on the opposite end and throws you a nod. In his hands you notice two steaming cups. He did promise you a warm drink after all. How thoughtful of him.

"I hope you like milk tea!" Duncan says handing the cup over to you. You can feel the warmth of the ceramic cup as it permeates through your worn leather gloves. "It's a bit hot, so don't drink it too fast."

"Thank you." You say, breathing a puff of mist into the cold air. "I didn't think you'd bring me one too."

"Can't break a promise to a young lady now, can I?" He says with a warm chuckle. You are taken aback by his sincerity. People like these came far and few in between.

You blow softly on steaming cup, the wisps of vapor gently caressing your chilled face. The liquid is a soft, pale color; gentle and comforting. A few bubbles dance along the surface, stirred up by the air from your lips. You take a small sip, careful to keep the liquid from burning your tongue. The taste is a bit sweet, a bit grassy, with a sort of a creamy texture and hint of spice to it. The hot drink feels good as it travels into your belly. You can't recall the last time you had a drink this good. Anything warm was hard to come by in Eden, especially for those who lived alone in the wild. Fire was something difficult for even the most experienced to make, even if one managed to find shelter from the rain.

"Do you like it?" Duncan asks, disrupting your thoughts. "It's got some ginger in it. It's fresh too. We grow our own supply right here in Alphonse. It's supposed to help against the cold, or at least that's what the doctors."

---
[X] "It's good."
"Aha! I'm glad you like it! It's my own special brew. I actually learned it from a family of... oh... well... maybe it wouldn't interest you."

Duncan seems to be delighted at your response.
[X] "No not really..."
"Ah... Well, I get that a lot. Apparently it's an acquired taste."

Duncan seems a bit disappointed at your response.
---

"Well, a warm drink is always good." Duncan continues. "A lot of the men in my unit complain about the taste," he huffs proudly again, "but it's hard to argue against a piping hot drink."

"You can say that again." You offer a short laugh, taking another sip. The heat has begun to seep through the ceramic cup and into your gloves.

"So, are you ready for a tour of the town?" Duncan asks. You nod while humming in agreement.

"We should wait for Noel first." You add. "She wanted to show me around too."

"Hmm? Ah. You have met Noel?" Duncan inquires.

"Do you know her?" You ask, surprised that Duncan seems to know her.

"It's a long story," he replies, "but yes. I was the one who brought her to Alphonse when she was a child... well, my unit did anyway. Mr. Rodriguez over there watches over her. He's the head mechanic here, but I'll bet Noel might have already told you that. She's probably the only kid he lets into the shop."

---
[X] "Noel is not a child?" You can't help but notice that Duncan's dialogue is rather strange. Noel seems to be rather young, so she couldn't be that much older than the other children here.
[X] Try not to think too much about it.
---

"She seems like a good kid." You nod over in the direction of the shop. "Mr. Rodriguez seems like a good mechanic as well. He's got a nice apprentice. She really knows her stuff."

"Indeed. I've heard good things about Noel from the men in the workshop." Duncan adds. "She's been doing good work. I'm glad she found something she likes. It helps to have something to keep you going."

"I was thinking the same thing." You chuckle lightly. "Alphonse seems like a great place."

"Well, we do have our fair share of troubles. But for the most part it is fairly stable for now. You might like it here if you plan to stay."

"I don't think I'll be staying too long." You reply.

"I figured as much." The man concedes. "You Wanderers never stay long. You all seem to always have somewhere you need to go."

"It's part of the job description I guess." You offer a shrug.

"Hey!" You hear Noel's voice call out behind you. She waves to you before running up to you, slightly out of breath and wearing a large coat. You can hardly make out her face from the cloak around her head.

"Ah, Noel!" Duncan offers his customary greeting. "How are things going in the workshop?"

She pauses for a moment, dusting herself off. "Good day Duncan sir." Her speech is a bit more formal compared to when she talks with you, although she does not seem all that uncomfortable . "I-I'm doing very well sir."

"Oh Noel..." He places a hand on her shoulder, "... you don't have to be so formal. Just call me Duncan, like I told you to."

"O-okay Duncan... sir..."

"Well," Duncan continues, ignoring her mistake, "I heard from our new friend here that you've been doing pretty well with Mr. Rodriguez."

"Ah... Y-yes." She replies with a bit more energy in her tone. "Today we replaced five engine blocks, thirty-two sparkplugs, and completed maintenence on three jeep turrets."

"Oh. That's great progress!" Duncan exclaims, surprising you. He doesn't seem to be lying, and you're rather intrigued at how genuine his tone is towards the child-like girl. "My men and I will greatly appreciate this. We've been losing quite a few vehicles out there..."

"A-ah... well... maintenance was a bit slower today than usual." Noel replied with an embarassed smile. "The rain seems heavier today, so we needed to scrub and treat the vehicles more than usual."

"Hmm... Well I didn't think the heavier rain would have been a problem." Duncan strokes his chin in deep thought. "Ahhh... I guess the laquer we're using isn't as good as the stuff they sell in Central... Maybe I'll talk to the Good Professor again later." He then turns to you. "Forgive me young lady. The two of us seemed to have drifted off into our own world."

"Don't worry." You reply with nod as he chuckles warmly.

"Ah! Mister Wanderer." Noel reaches into her pocket and pulls out an envelope. "U-umm, Mr. Rodriguez says that there's a festival going on in town. He says I should probably show you around. I-it's pretty fun, if you're interested."

"Oh, right." Duncan chimes in. "The Festival of the Skylights is going on for the next few days. You came just at the right time." He then strokes his chin again in thought. "Hmm... but I think we should probably visit the market district first. You're probably low on supplies right? It looked like you'd been walking for quite awhile when we picked you up."

Duncan was right. For the most part you knew nothing about the contents in the bag on your back. It was the bag of a dead man after all. On top of that, you probably looked pretty washed up and sickly were it not for the thick scarf of your cloak and dagger covering most of your face. Picking up supplies and getting adequate rest would be your priority.

However, you can't resist the hopeful look in the young girl's eyes. She seems rather eager to go with you.

Retcon Alert

I'm changing "Festival of the Sun" to "Festival of the Skylights", because it fits better with what I have in mind to write about.

"B-but the festivities are starting today!" Noel protests.

"I know Noel. But I'm sure our friend here probably would like to get their things in order."

You see Noel pout a bit. You have to admit she is rather cute in her mannerisms. She looks like a kid through and through. Maybe Duncan just had a slip of the tongue?

"Why don't we let our friend decide. She is our guest today, why don't we give her the honor."

"O-okay..." The girl looks a bit dejected. She must have expected you to want to go to the market district. You're surprised she wasn't startled about Duncan referring to you as a woman.

"Hmm..." You ponder for a few moments. "How about we go to the festival first?"

You see the girl's eyes light up and a big smile grow on her face.

"Oh great!" She exclaims happily. "Let's go Mister Wanderer!"

"Are you sure about this?" Duncan asks. He seems a bit surprised by your decision. You can relate though. If it wasn't for this little girl, you probably would have gone straight to the market district with him.

"Yeah." You reply. "I'll probably be in town for a few days. I don't need supplies right away. This festival sounds interesting. I'd like to see what it's all about."

"Hmm... alright." Duncan nods in agreement. "It is actually not too far from here." He points in the direction of a busy street from where you first came from. "The market district is on the other side of Alphonse, so we would probably need to go there by car. The festival area is close to the town square though. We could walk there if you wanted to. The rain isn't too terrible today."

"O-oh!" Noel exclaims. "If we walk, I can tell you all about Alphonse along the way."

"Ah yes." Duncan adds. "There's quite a bit to see in Alphonse. We do have our fair share of troublemakers, but through the efforts of the citizens we've been able to make it into a great place."

---
[X] Walk there with Duncan and Noel. It's been awhile since you were last able to enjoy a walk without fearing for your life. Having companions with you might not be such a bad thing either, and you can probably do a little sightseeing on the way.
[X] Take the car. You'd much rather prefer not to walk around in the rain. With the car you could probably get there a bit faster and see what this festival is all about. Noel seems a bit excited about it too.

A/N: This one is a bit short. I will try to write more once I get off work.

Hopefully it's not too boring. The upcoming festival chapters will be much more exciting with even some badass moments thrown in for good measure.

Skylight Festival - Part III
[X] Walk there with Duncan and Noel.

---

You eye Duncan and Noel while you decide what to do. You can't remember the last time you had visited a settlement in any sort of detail. Your memory must be getting really bad these days.

"Let's go for a walk then. I'd like to see this place."

"Alright then, it's settled!" Duncan pumps a fist into the air. "Let's get going." Noel chuckles in agreement.

The three of you leave the busy base and the sounds of huming machinery and shouting engineers behind. The street grows quiety but more lively as the crowds of men and women in jumpsuits and coveralls begin to transition into merchants and common folk. This must be what Alphonse is like, you think to yourself as you follow Duncan and Noel into the busy street. It feels strange to be around people who are suddenly so carefree and talking about what you feel to be insignificant things in their lives.

"Are you going to the festival tonight?"

"The rain seems a bit lighter today."

"Oh! Did you hear about Miss Bennett? She's gave birth to twins..."

"Look there. Mister Duncan must be out for a stroll today after the patrol."

"I just picked these vegetables fresh today. The mold attacks have been pretty sparse this season!"

You have to admit though, it is a pleasant feeling to see people smiling and enjoying their lives. As a Wanderer, it means your efforts have paid off. You have made a difference in this dreary world.

"Hmm?" Noel eyes you. "Is everything alright Mister?"

"Huh?" You look down at her with a confused expression on your face.

"Heehee..." She giggles softly, "... you had a wonderful smile on your face just now."

"H-huh? I did?" You touch your fingers to your face. It feels a bit warm, almost hot.

"It's good to be able to laugh and smile right?" Duncan says without turning back to the two of you. "I'm glad you can make those kinds of faces too, Wanderer."

"Uh... yeah..." Duncan's sincerity always seems to throw you off. It's hard to tell whether he is lying or not, you haven't met anyone who could say such corny things so straightforwardly.

You don't say too much as the three of you walk down the street. It isn't so much that you don't want to talk as it is that you were always rather poor with conversations. Instead, you simply watch Noel and Duncan banter in silence while admiring the structures of the settlement.

Alphonse appears to have been around for some time, perhaps longer than Duncan and Noel have been alive. Many of the buildings appear to be fairly old, their walls made from the strange metal plating that was used build the city walls. The shapes of the the buildings were strange and uneven. Perhaps the ancient metal was difficult to cut into. You can't recall there being too many tools--or weapons for that matter--capable of damaging the metal plate. But the sheer size of the gigantic sheets made it impractical for use unless one possessed ancient cutting and crafting tools.

Despite this the structures appeared to have been extremely well-kept, and you can tell whoever lived in them had tried their hardest to make them seem like home. Treated cloth and tarps of various colors were draped over the walls. Windows had been stamped into the rough holes cut out of the metal to keep out the cold, while letting in what little daylight graced the somber forests of Eden. Where the strange, ceramic-like metal was thickest and unmalleable, wooden walls were erected to complete the structures of the huts and taverns. You glance into an open doorway of one of these homes as a plump-looking woman throws out a dish of stale water into the street, a cloud of steam rising like a streak as the hot water splashes onto the stone sidewalk. A hard-wood floor has been installed to keep out the mud, and you can see various rugs strewn about inside and on the doorways. It must be home to a large family, as you make note of a number of muddy boots by the door and coats on the wall rack.

Other buildings were far more elaborate and uniform, perhaps owing to more advanced and refined construction techniques as Alphonse began to establish itself as a vibrant frontier colony. Their designs were... familiar. You can't quite place your finger on it, but an air of nostalgia surrounds them. You can't recall where you've seen it but foggy wisps of memory flutter faintly in the back of your mind, calling you back...

... back towards where? You push the thought out of your head and try not to think too much about it. Memory sickness was common among the denizens of Eden. Some people believed it came about as way of dealing with the harsh reality of the frontier. Others felt a more spiritual connection to this condition. You recall a conversation with someone who explained it to you as "visions of a past life in another world". At first you thought it was a bit crazy, but over time you weren't so sure anymore. Many others you have met were similar, speaking of experiences from before Eden itself and of places that even the oldest of the Wanderers didn't know existed.

---
[X] But the memory sickness was simply that, a sickness. You've always been part of the group who was inclined to believe in the former. People often delude themselves to escape the harshness of reality, one free from the Shades, Beaskin, and The Machines. A life that you didn't have to worry about freezing to death, or contracting flesh-eating molds and hypothermia due to being wet and freezing most of the time. While it is comforting to have such memories, they are nothing but a weakness in a world where death lurks around every corner. [Practical]

[X] Perhaps that person was right. These pangs of nostalgia that you feel in your heart but can't quite grasp. Perhaps they are memories of your past. But of what past exactly? You've been in Eden for as long as you can remember. But, you can't help but feel comforted by these hazy memories that drift to and fro like a stream in your mind. They are warm and comforting as a fire in the dead of night. Perhaps they mean something more... [Philosophical]
---

You notice that the street has grown quieter. The The sound of music and inaudible chatter grows in the distance down the sidewalk. It must be the festival that Noel and Duncan were talking about. You notice a number of people going in the same direction. Some are alone, some are in groups of friends, and others walk slowly together hand in hand while laughing together about needless things. You can already see the tents coming into view ahead, a blur of colored tarp and drapings rising above a flow of bodies. However, something else catches your attention, or rather Noel's sudden pause.

"Wha..." Her voice trails off and she grips at the hem of her coat. She seems to be looking across the street. You eye her face for a moment, studying the look of fascination on her face.

"Hmm?" You mumble to yourself without thinking. Your gaze follows hers, and you see two figures standing in the alleyway. A young man and a woman are together, and awfully close too. Your first thought is that maybe she is being assaulted, but a faint laugh emanating from their lips convinces you otherwise. You glance back to Noel. The girl seems rather fascinated with what is going on, her eyes full of anticipation watching intently.

The two individuals exchange a few words, the man seems to be mostly doing the talking. He seems a bit embarassed, and it seems like he stumbles over his words. But he seems to get out what he has to say. Judging by his look, he appears to be a soldier but not one from Duncan's company. The young woman seems to be just a towngirl

"Hmm... It must be one of those..." You hear Duncan comment.

A moment passes between the couple, the man appearing distressed while the woman averts her gaze from him. However she finally lifts her chin to gaze back at him, taking his hands in hers without a word. Her cheeks are a bit rosy, whether from the frigid air or embarassment you can't really tell. The young woman brings his hands up to her lips and breaths softly on them. Her misty breath flows between their cupped hands, entertwining with their fingers. A few words pass between them, and they exchange smiles before leaving and walking down the road towards the settlement.

"W-woah..." Noah covers her hands with her mouth. As her words catch your attention, you realize that you've been staring at them now too.

"Ahem!" Duncan clears his throat, bringing the two of you back to reality. "Shall we get going then?"

"Oh... uhh... yeah..."

"R-right!"

Feeling a bit silly, you fall in quickly behind Noel. It seems the couple didn't notice you at all. Perhaps they were too caught up in the moment. It's for the best, you figure. It'd be rather bothersome to have them catch the two of you eavesdropping on their moment. And having to explain yourselves to them would have been a bit of a pain to do so.

"S-sorry..." You apologize.

"Don't worry about it." Duncan replies as if nothing happened. "That must be your first time seeing something like that huh?"

"The first that I remember..." You say. You're surprised that you can't recall anything similar from the other settlements.

Duncan laughs. "I've been seeing it a bit more often in town. It's really a wonderful thing." You notice his expression grow somber for a moment. "It makes everything we worked hard for worth it..."

"Yeah." You glance at a group of kids running towards the festival. "I can see that."

"It's so romantic!" Noel exclaims, a slight blush on her face. "Ehehe... it's like every girl's dream."

"Is it now?" You glance in her direction, examining her smiling face curiously. The last time you held a man's hands it was because you were trying to stop him from choking you to death. You vaguely remember him trying to rob you. Or maybe he was trying to rape you? You couldn't quite remember as he became a corpse rather quickly after you jammed a knife through his windpipe and caved his face in with a rock.

"Every Alphonse girl dreams of being whisked away by a brave and handsome soldier." Noel replies, covering her cheeks with her hands.

"Even you huh?" You ask. You can't help but smile at her.

"A-ah... well... I'm not too good with people s-so..." Her voice trails off, and you notice her expression changes as she fiddles with a lock of her hair. "B-being with Mr. Rodriguez in the workshop is much more fun."

"But you can't do that forever can you?" You give her a look of concern.

"O-oh!" Noel points towards a building on the other side of the street. You guess she either didn't hear you or didn't want to talk about it any further. "That's Ms. Beatrice's cafe!"

"The tavern is on the other side of the street as well." Duncan adds. "It's favorite of mine. I highly recommend you stop by there some time. George is pretty welcoming to newcomers, and it's also a gathering place for Wanderers seeking help on client orders. You're probably going to start looking for work after this right?"

"I see." You reply "I'll definitely check it out."

[X] Work is always good, as Wanderers need to put food on the table at night as well. Being able to find backup amongst fellow Wanderers like yourself to lend you a hand is always a welcome blessing. [Cooperative]

---

You soon reach the town square where the festival is being held. Numerous stalls line the streets, covered in tarps of colors you never even thought would have existed in Eden. The sound of laughter and vendors advertising their products fills the air alongside the music of drums and horns. You see young people and children playing games in some stalls, trying to win the prizes on the wall. In some sections, large tarps have been spread over the sky to create large dry areas where you can see the townsfolk dance and sit down to eat food. The thought of food makes your mouth water, and as you breathe in you can smell the sizzling fat of roasts and sweet scent of grilled meats.

"We're here!" Noel exclaims. She takes a deep breath, taking in the smells. "Where would you like to go first?" She looks to you as she asks.

"Hmm..." Duncan. "Well, you can't really buy anything from the festival area if you don't have any money can you?"

"A-ah..." Noel begins digging in her pockets, she pulls out a small stack of cards. "Mr. Rodriguez gave me an advance so that I could go out and play today."

"How about you?" Duncan asks. "I know you Wanderers don't have much of a use for ration cards or money since you fellows are always going from town to town. But you should at least have something to trade in for currency right?"

"Uhh... yeah..." Your voice trails off as you pull your scarf over your face. The drink Duncan gave you seems to be wearing off, and the chill seems to be seeping back into your body again. You recall grabbing a nearby random pack from the convoy after you woke up. You still have no idea what was in it.

Duncan laughs at your sheepish answer. "Well. Worry not. We can head over to the exchange stand to get you something. Think of it as a little welcome present for your first time in Alphonse! My treat."

"A-ah... but I want to go play the stall games..." Noel seems a bit dejected, and you can see why as you glance over towards the exchange booth. The line is rather long, and it appears like it would take a long time for the three of you to get through it. You can understand why though, having fun was something many people didn't have time for. Free time was in short supply, as one was always either treating equipmment or shelters against the rain.

"Now now Noel..." Duncan begins, "we can't leave our guests out of the fun can we?"

"Yes... yes sir..." Comes her concession of defeat.

I wonder if I should make it so that you guys get to ask various questions about the setting. It would let you guys kinda roleplay by having your questions be asked by the Wanderer to the various characters she is with. It would give me something to do while I'm writing the next major event, while letting you guys participate more in the world.

EDIT: For example, you can ask a question in the thread right now, and either Duncan or Noel could answer it for you if they have the answers to. The same will apply to the other characters that you meet later in the story.

What do you guys think???

Also, would you guys like to have your own Wanderers appear in the story to help the protagonist on jobs? I can probably put together some kind of character sheet for you guys.

Hmmm. I'd love to interact more, but I'm rather busy usually so I wouldn't be able to contribute nearly as much as I'd like. Running a quest, IRL stuff, and all that ya know?

As for our own Wanderers, that'd be pretty cool, but what would it entail on our end?

That's fine too! I didn't intend for it to be anything too big. I remember reading another quest where the OP allowed us to ask questions about the setting and it would be relayed to us in the form of in-universe explanations from the characters. It's just for if you want things clarified in the setting, or want to know more about a particular place or thing that isn't explained to your liking by the main events. It would not be anything huge, but just be simple questions that would be answered in smaller semi-IC posts. That way you could at least get to see more of the worldbuilding while I'm working on the next main event post. So overall it is not too much work on your end. You just ask a question and I'll answer it via an NPC answering the question as if the Wanderer had asked the question.

Hmm... Well, I want you to be able to see your characters running around in the setting. I always felt bad that some people didn't get to see the Wanderer that they wanted in the opening posts when we were voting for what kind of character we wanted. So maybe this would be the opportunity for you guys to have a character you might want to see interact in the setting, as well as provide more information about the setting to the protagonist.

For the most part, I would be writing about the characters you give me. I would, of course try to be as in-character as I could according to the Character Sheet. I don't want to have to burden you with having to contribute to the quest as well, since most people often just enjoy reading quests and participating in them. The CS would come with a personality section, so I would have an idea of how they act and what kind of person they would be. In a sense, it would be kind of a surprise too, because you would get to see how I interpret your character. Of course, if I do something about your character that you don't like, you're free to PM me and I can make appropriate changes. On the flip side, you can choose to do nothing and see how your character develops over the course of the story since there are still a bunch of things that you don't know yet about the setting. lol, even I haven't completely figured out the setting yet... xD

I thought it might be a good idea, since it would let you guys see your wanderers doing stuff, while giving me a good writing exercise since I'm writing about characters who's personalities I may not like very much or agree with, or maybe their personalities are just hard for me to write since I'm so used to writing certain character archetypes. I guess I just want to add more fun and flavor to the quest too.

Gah! Why does my writing sound so formal. It feels kinda pretentious... :(

Also dat wall of text... I must be procrastinating... :(

Your writing is fine! I sounds super pretentious IRL cause of my vocabulary, but in writing it makes you sound smart. ;)

As for the rest, I'm more interested in the world so I'll definitely ask questions, but refrain from the other characters.
