Lord of a Fief Quest [Xianxia/Western Fantasy Fusion, CK2-ish]

[X] Plan we need more everything
[X] Blackmail him
--[X] His old cultivation technique, since he is trying to use forbidden techniques, he won't need his old ones. Also, during negotiations, can offer any outsider part we have for sale, maybe a future deal seeing as how we have a rift to deal with

...Okay, guess I'll just X my plan and lay out its pros & cons as there's not much interest.

[X] Plan Prepare for Cold War
-[X] Flood the Market - The Zhou Clan depended on revenues from Heizhu Valley to prosecute their war against you. If you disrupted that flow of income, you would disrupt their ability to attack you directly. Of course, this was not free. It would cost you 500 Silver Bars / Season in losses from your Alchemy products. That said, your spies estimated that would choke off almost all the money your enemies could afford to spend attacking you. A fair trade? You decide.
-[X] Acquire a Diplomat Adviser - Diplomacy was your weakest area of expertise, it was time to short that up with professional help. Have your spies seek out information on various candidates, screen them, then send the short list to you so that you might interview them for the position.
-[X] Border Forts - Establish a network of small forts to alert you to the presence of raiders and also to hold against those same raiders until reinforcements arrive. It would make you look good to your people and if you were expecting increased raids, it would reduce the damage they caused to your lands. This will strengthen you against Orc Raids but weaken you against Bandit Raids.
-[X] Heavy Road Patrols - Build defensible posts along the road to the Imperial Highway upon which most of your trade flows and establish heavier patrols along the roads. It will weaken your defense against Orc Raids but will strengthen you against Bandit Raids.
-[X] Tax Reform - Now that you have settled in and surveyed what there is to survey, you have some ideas on how to increase tax revenue. It may not result in a great inflow of cash but it is something. Increases tax revenue by 150 Silver Bars / Season.
-[X] Purification: You must cleanse yourself of corruption if you are to advance through Cultivation. This is the process by which impurities are purged from the flesh and the soul and you are covered in a black gunk.
++ Corruption Reduced by (1d100+Purification)/25
-[X] Social Actions (You may take 2 of these in exchange for 1 personal action)
--- [X] Have tea with the head of the Adventurer's Guild
--- [X] Have tea with Myeong Kimora
-[X] Send Wong Hui to Seclusion with Two Rank 2 Spirit Stones for 2x Speed per round of cultivation.
-[X] Provide all our Advisers One Rank 2 Spirit Stone for each round of Cultivation they undergo while at Rank 2. (Automatic until Stones run out or reaching Rank 3)
-[X] Report him to the Imperial Court and collect a reward of 20 Rank 3 Spirit Stones as a token of gratitude.
-[X] Do not buy Spirit Stones this Turn.

+ Focuses on preparing for upcoming Zhou Clan Cold War instead of risky & time-consuming endeavors.
+ Conserves money, no Spirit Stones is immediately required this turn.
+ Prepares fief during Winter peacetime for upcoming Spring/Summer raids. Zhou Clan noted to be focusing on us more.
+/- Meets with Kimora in Winter rather than wait for Spring to show our commitment. Otoh, it's forcing Kimora to travel to our Fief during Winter, which is inconvenient to her.
+ Sends our Intrigue Adviser to Seclusion during Winter, a calm period. Didn't pick any Intrigue actions this turn, so losing his bonus is fine.
+ Reports a corrupt, heretical Lord for Imperial Reputation/Favor. Can get Technique Scrolls with existing methods, while reputation gain is harder.
  • Dangerous to make deals with Lord Kim for Outsider parts as it tells him our fief is valuable to him, while asking for his Old Techniques implies we're weak. Poor bargaining position for any negotiation, since Bai Clan is currently debilitated. Getting caught by Imperial authorities is worst case scenario.
- Changed Social Action from Wong Hui (Intrigue) -> Adventurer's Guild so we can hire them, like for clearing Dire Wolves.
- Cannot cultivate any Techniques with current Corruption levels unless spending a long time to purify. Acquiring one isn't an immediate priority.

-[X] Hire Ninja to steal Technique Scrolls from a random clan. With the hot springs in play, a mastery of Earth or Water would play to your strengths. Both elements were also strong against the Fire techniques of the Zhou clan, shoring up your one weakness. Of course, you would make enemies of another clan if you were caught. So there was that. ( Accelerates Element mastery time from 2 years to 3 months. )
--[X] Water
Should specify what type of Technique you're getting beyond just the element, i.e. "Defense" or "Support", etc.

I'd vote cold war if it had included water technique, Ill go for this instead.
So... we acquire a water technique and leave it alone for a year until we can cultivate efficiently again? Our Corruption is very high, it will take a while to purify. There's more urgent priorities than spending an action on something that's not going to be used for a long time.

The same could be said about the tax reform since we already have a good inflow of cash per season.
No it's not the same thing. Cash is always useful, stealing a scroll that's doing nothing for several turns is bad time management. Also, we almost went bankrupt last turn for our Seclusion until we were forced to sell assets, so we do want more cash ASAP. Like, I'm all for getting a Scroll - when the time is appropriate.

[X] Plan Prepare for Cold War

Darn, the Ninja action failed a second time, that sucks. I think we should invest in other actions rather than keep hitting our heads on that particularly unlucky brick wall, at least for now. The Zhou Clan have probably gotten suspicious of the pattern of attacks by now.

Alright, so lots to do. First off guys, please discuss your thoughts first before voting because there's suggestions for potential turn actions yet to be added and questions that might affect Planning.
For those voting for previous Plans, consider the following:
  1. We already hired Ninja Protection covering us for this Winter turn. Using up 1 Action to do so again is redundant until next Turn when it'll expire.
  2. Bai Shen is now a Rank 5 Cultivator. Rank 3 Spirit Stones are likely useless on him, it will only help if we spend it on our Advisers who're reaching it soon. One Rank 3 Stone per Cultivation Action is enough to subsidize a Rank 3 Cultivator, they are still Rank 2.
  3. We are probably reporting Lord Kim to the Imperial Court, gaining us +20 Rank 3 Stones (2000 Silver Bars). It's better to save our money till we actually need those Spirit Stones, especially with Zhou Clan war heating up.
  4. We have a -44 Corruption malus to Cultivation. We're aren't able to cultivate efficiently a stolen Technique Scroll anytime soon until we take several turns of purification, better to hold off until it's relevant.
  5. Seems a bit weird to ask Lord Kim for his old cultivation techniques, which he's abandoning, implying it's somehow less effective. Making a deal to sell Outsider parts to him attracts his attention to our Fief and we just blackmailed a heretical, untrustworthy Lord that's more powerful than us.
  6. Please reconsider investing in any Research actions until we've got a breathing room to perform a high risk & time consuming endeavor, only to increase our revenue or boost cultivation, when we have plenty of easier low-hanging fruit like that 2nd Spirit Grain farm which could potentially net us +1000 Silver Bars, for example. And remember last turn we built those expensive River Mills? Here's what they depend on:

Here's my initial Plan for discussion:

[ ] Plan Prepare for Cold War
-[ ] Flood the Market - The Zhou Clan depended on revenues from Heizhu Valley to prosecute their war against you. If you disrupted that flow of income, you would disrupt their ability to attack you directly. Of course, this was not free. It would cost you 500 Silver Bars / Season in losses from your Alchemy products. -[ ] Border Forts - Establish a network of small forts to alert you to the presence of raiders and also to hold against those same raiders until reinforcements arrive. It would make you look good to your people and if you were expecting increased raids, it would reduce the damage they caused to your lands. This will strengthen you against Orc Raids but weaken you against Bandit Raids.
-[ ] Heavy Road Patrols - Build defensible posts along the road to the Imperial Highway upon which most of your trade flows and establish heavier patrols along the roads. It will weaken your defense against Orc Raids but will strengthen you against Bandit Raids.
-[ ] Tax Reform - Now that you have settled in and surveyed what there is to survey, you have some ideas on how to increase tax revenue. It may not result in a great inflow of cash but it is something. Increases tax revenue by 150 Silver Bars / Season.
-[ ] Purification: You must cleanse yourself of corruption if you are to advance through Cultivation. This is the process by which impurities are purged from the flesh and the soul and you are covered in a black gunk.
++ Corruption Reduced by (1d100+Purification)/25
-[ ] Social Actions (You may take 2 of these in exchange for 1 personal action)
--- [ ] Have Wong Hui over for tea.
--- [ ] Have tea with Myeong Kimora.
-[ ] Send Liu Chen to Seclusion with Two Rank 2 Spirit Stones for 2x Speed.
-[ ] Report him to the Imperial Court and collect a reward of 20 Rank 3 Spirit Stones as a token of gratitude.
-[ ] Do not buy Spirit Stones this Turn.

Reasonings for my Plan:
  • Continue to 'Flood the Market' as economic warfare is heating up, don't let up the pressure and momentum.
  • Border Forts and Road Patrols (which builds defensible posts despite the name) so we are prepared for any Raids next year, there's lots of hints that it'll get more intense. With how Zhou Clan is focusing on fighting us, I'm betting they will hire conventional bandit raids, not just Orcs.
  • Normal Purification to reduce the large amounts of Corruption we gained this turn. Alchemical Purification is too expensive after our Seclusion spending spree, we need to conserve funds.
  • It reflects better upon us if we reach out to Kimora during the winter. It shows our resolve & commitment despite the difficulties of meeting her during Winter, when the snow prevents much travel. While she isn't annoyed, she's already made a note of it to her maid and it's important to quickly address such issues before they devolve into uncharitable thoughts, if we want to build a strong foundation for marriage.
  • Social Wong Hui so we can improve the loyalty of our Intrigue Adviser as the Zhou Clan war will have lots of skulduggery going on.
  • We don't have enough funds available to buy a decent or similar Ranked Spirit Treasure or Technique Scroll for Bai Shen. Plus, there's a higher priority for us to reach the minimum Power Rank 6 that Elders/Fief Lords usually are before looking to expand our repertoire.
  • Element Training is redundant atm as we don't have any relevant Techniques to train with it.
  • Acquire Alchemy Formula is interesting as I'm hoping to develop one that counteracts the addiction or Corruption from consuming Cores, but that's not a immediate priority as it's research that can wait until we've taken precautions on our current issues.
  • Send one of our Advisers to Seclusion while it's Winter to take advantage of the relative peace. Initially wanted Bai Chenshen as our most loyal retainer, but we need his Martial bonus. Went for Chamberlain cuz he's weakest and we still have +30 Boost to Stewardship actions without his bonus.
  • Report Lord Kim because we don't want to get involved in Shady Politics when our Clan is already walking on a tightrope due to weakening. If we want Secret Techniques it's better to steal them from the Clan that's not dealing with Outsiders since those might be Corruption-related, like Nae Clan's Devouring Path. Furthermore, opportunity cost: we have a method to steal Secret Techniques; we don't have a free, easy way to get Imperial Reputation/Favor.

Obligatory reminders for @ChaosCircle on potential Turn Actions:
  1. Create Stewardship Action: Developing a Spirit Grain Farm on the Spirit Density 2 area we found. (Plus add it to the Informational Map)
  2. Create Personal Action: Research on Beast Taming Clans to ally with by gifting the Phoenix Egg.
  3. Create Martial Action: Increase the unit size of Bloody Hand directly, rather than the general Fief Military. Sub-vote: Option to raise Bloody Hand into cultivators.
Onto my questions:
  1. Can we eventually increase the number of Turn Actions, if so how?
  2. Can we approach allied Clans to trade for Secret Techniques, particularly someone like Myeong Clan, as a potential marriage alliance is a stronger bargaining position?
  3. Does existing Corruption affect the amount of power consuming a Core will give, or does it only affect normal Cultivation?
  4. Does eating less fresh Cores affect the amount of power it gives, or does it only increase Corruption gained?
  5. Do Spirit Stones of a lesser rank still provide any bonuses to Cultivation at all, if they are less than the 10:1 ratio to achieve a similar rank as the Cultivator?
  6. So Bai Shen has mastered the Wood Element itself? Have we mastered all our known Techniques (2 Wood, 1 Heaven), and do we need to train Heaven's Grace since it's recently acquired?
  7. Is there a difference between learning Techniques by consuming Cores vs. learning from a Technique Scroll?
  8. Are there any products that boost Purification results with multipliers?
  9. Will we get options to increase the tradition of our Tax Office in Stewardship actions? Seems weird that's the Area with lowest amount of options, considering our +60 Boost.
  10. Can you give us a Price Range estimate for buying a Rank 5 Water Technique, as an example? We have only have an estimate for quality and it'd be a waste of action if it turned out we didn't have enough funds due to adjusting for Rank.
  11. I assume trading with Ka Clan for Spirit Stones is available for most of the year except for Winter? (We can buy in Spring next turn)
  12. Do we need to micromanage our Adviser's Corruption if we spend Cultivation Aids on them?
  13. Can we return to the Rank 10 Spirit Mine next year to scavenge for more Spirit Stones dislodged by the Spirit Beast living there without trying to secure the whole place?
  14. What was the result of our Cross-Cultivation attribute gains (Brawn/Finesse/Con) for this turn of Seclusion?

I think we may need to hire more troops to get the most out of the border fort and patrol actions. They seem to imply refocusing troops in two opposite directions.

I agree, I considered using the Martial actions on 'Military Reforms' or 'Increase Military Spending' to improve our troops, but doing them at max efficiency requires picking multiple sub-options, which will cost us a lot of Silver Bars.

I wanted us to build a stockpile/buffer of cash as we just went into debt last turn, and picked the easier infrastructure projects. Our revenue is basically +957 Bars/turn because we're committed to spending -500 Bars on flooding the market every turn.

EDIT:
Sorry for pinging you like this but I just realized a really dumb mistake I did and edited my Plan, wanted to let you know the changes since you're voting for it @Mr. Prokosch @Uhtread @asonia

The only changes are sending Wong Hui (Intrigue Adviser) to Seclusion instead of Liu Chen, because my Plan doesn't take any Intrigue Actions this turn, so losing his Intrigue bonus is fine and adding a Clause to automatically share our Rank 2 Spirit Stones for our Advisers to boost their cultivation.

For those voting for a Plan, sending an Adviser to Seclusion is a big selling point, since Winter is one of the only times you can do so safely. Spending our leftover Rank 2 Stones is also important for increasing our Retainers' power, a subset of our own, and it's why we conserved them in the first place and it's cheap.

Thanks for the reminder.

[ ] Increase the size of the Bloody Hand from 20 to 40 Soldiers. This costs 200 Silver Bars / Season to sustain but provides you with an effective company worth of fighting force.

[ ] Send the Bloody Hand into Cultivation so that they may enter Qi Condensation Stage and advance in Power. This requires a substantial expenditure of 2000 Silver Bars to fund pills and incense to enable them to breakthrough to the Qi Condensation Stage, enabling them to gain a cultivate action.

[ ] Develop a Spirit Grain Farm on the second Spirit Density 2 site in the province - Yields 1000 Silver Bars / Season once operational. Costs 4000 Silver Bars to secure the area and buy enough seed grain to begin operations.

[ ] Research Beast Taming Clans: A phoenix egg is valuable and a good opening gift to the right person, you just needed to figure out who the right person was.

Added as actions.

  1. Can we eventually increase the number of Turn Actions, if so how?

I'm on the fence about that. On one hand, it should be possible to expand your bureaucracy. On the other hand, I can't think of a fair price for an extra strategic action each turn.

Personal actions can be increased through cultivation based on the number of cores you have. (i.e. 1 Core = 3 Actions, 2 Core = 4 Actions)

You can form a maximum of 5 cores or upgrade 1 core 5 times. Once you exit Core Formation stage, you have a number of major bonuses permanently locked.

Core Formation is 1000 to 5000 Power. (i.e. Every 1000 Power you gain a Core)

  1. Can we approach allied Clans to trade for Secret Techniques, particularly someone like Myeong Clan, as a potential marriage alliance is a stronger bargaining position?

You can negotiate it as part of a marriage contract but right now, your relationship with Myeong Kimora hasn't progressed to the point you can start penning down a marriage contract with negotiated exchanges.

  1. Does existing Corruption affect the amount of power consuming a Core will give, or does it only affect normal Cultivation?

The latter. You are more likely to become addicted at high levels of corruption. (i.e. 44 Corruption is a pretty solid chance of +1 vote towards eating cores on every action)

  1. Does eating less fresh Cores affect the amount of power it gives, or does it only increase Corruption gained?

Purely related to Corruption gained.

  1. Do Spirit Stones of a lesser rank still provide any bonuses to Cultivation at all, if they are less than the 10:1 ratio to achieve a similar rank as the Cultivator?

You need to 10:1 them until you are of equal rank. (i.e. Rank 5 is 100 Rank 3 Spirit Stones)

  1. So Bai Shen has mastered the Wood Element itself? Have we mastered all our known Techniques (2 Wood, 1 Heaven), and do we need to train Heaven's Grace since it's recently acquired?

Correct, he mastered the Wood Element itself. Mastering elements provides a bonus to rolls I haven't really defined for techniques that use that element. Right now, I've been silently adding +10 but I'm not sure if that is too much/too little.

You've mastered all 3 techniques. But you can train techniques to provide additional bonuses. (i.e. Heaven's Grace can be trained to give up to an additional +10 when its used)

  1. Is there a difference between learning Techniques by consuming Cores vs. learning from a Technique Scroll?

The former is part of the core consumption action, the latter requires a personal action to learn from a technique scroll.

  1. Are there any products that boost Purification results with multipliers?

No. Its part of why Corruption is such a risk. I may add them into the game later but right now, they'd be too expensive.

  1. Will we get options to increase the tradition of our Tax Office in Stewardship actions? Seems weird that's the Area with lowest amount of options, considering our +60 Boost.

I can add an action for that if you want.

  1. Can you give us a Price Range estimate for buying a Rank 5 Water Technique, as an example? We have only have an estimate for quality and it'd be a waste of action if it turned out we didn't have enough funds due to adjusting for Rank.

Techniques aren't ranked. Publicly available techniques are relatively cheap, like 200 Silver Bars but are of low quality. Secret techniques are of high quality but cannot be bought for currency. Quality affects the cap of what you can train it to. (i.e. Low Quality techniques I'd probably cap at +5 for training them.)

  1. I assume trading with Ka Clan for Spirit Stones is available for most of the year except for Winter? (We can buy in Spring next turn)

Correct.

  1. Do we need to micromanage our Adviser's Corruption if we spend Cultivation Aids on them?
No.

  1. Can we return to the Rank 10 Spirit Mine next year to scavenge for more Spirit Stones dislodged by the Spirit Beast living there without trying to secure the whole place?

Yes, but the gains will probably be substantially less.

  1. What was the result of our Cross-Cultivation attribute gains (Brawn/Finesse/Con) for this turn of Seclusion?

I'm an idiot, I did pure power instead of Cross-Cultivation. I'll just leave the Power as is and give some Brawn/Finesse/Con gains.

So... we acquire a water technique and leave it alone for a year until we can cultivate efficiently again? Our Corruption is very high, it will take a while to purify. There's more urgent priorities than spending an action on something that's not going to be used for a long time.

This is not correct. You can learn scrolls w/o worrying about Corruption.

You can form a maximum of 5 cores or upgrade 1 core 5 times. Once you exit Core Formation stage, you have a number of major bonuses permanently locked.

Core Formation is 1000 to 5000 Power. (i.e. Every 1000 Power you gain a Core)
One trope of xianxia is that sometimes the protagonist will delay their breakthrough to the next cultivation realm in order to strengthen their foundation. Would we have the option of doing something like that, perhaps by sacrificing part of our power to do so?

E.g. Losing 500 or 1000 power gives us the capacity to create an extra core or upgrade an existing one by a single rank.

So, if we earned 25,000 power, and reset 20,000 of it, we could then create 5 cores that were each at rank 5. This would give big bonuses to our future growth, and make it so that our ultimate limits were that much greater, at the cost of handicapping us in the short term, and risking falling behind our rivals for a time.

Ok so... I just found 3 glaring errors that needs some tweaking @ChaosCircle and I definitely sympathize lol:
  • There's an error in calculating Fief Tax Revenue:
Revenue
17185 Silver Bars
/ Year or 4371 Silver Bars / Season
Our revenue per year should be 17,220 Silver Bars/Year. Calculations are as follows:
+1000 from Alchemy Hall (does not specify per season, assuming per year)
+1000 from Spirit Grain Farm (does not specify per season, assuming per year)
+1000 from Spirit Herb Garden (does not specify per season, assuming per year)
+300/season or +1200/year from River Mills
+100/year from Cao Grass
+12100/year from Population Centers
+5% from Stone Roads
Total: 16,400*5% = 17220 Bars/Year or 4305 Bars/Season

Also, even if the above wasn't the case, the Per Year & Per Season values don't match up:
17,185/4 seasons = 4296.25 Bars (not 4371).

[ ] Develop a Spirit Grain Farm on the second Spirit Density 2 site in the province - Yields 1000 Silver Bars / Season once operational.
Are you sure about making it 1k Bars/Season? That's 4k/Year, a substantial boost and it doesn't match the calculations for the 1st Grain Farm.

Spirit Grain Farm - Your ancestors managed to pacify a stretch of land saturated with magical energy (Spirit Density 2) and turn into a farm for spirit grain. A regular diet of spirit grain speeds cultivation, making it quite the valuable commodity. Gain +10 to Cultivation attempts as well as a decent source of revenue. Of course, your rivals envy this particular asset and would seek to take it from you. (+1000 Silver Bars Tax Revenue)
The Cultivation bonus for our Seclusion was +50: 40 from Attribute, 10 from Divine Luck. You forgot to add an extra +10 from Spirit Grains.

Follow-up questions:
You can form a maximum of 5 cores or upgrade 1 core 5 times. Once you exit Core Formation stage, you have a number of major bonuses permanently locked.

Core Formation is 1000 to 5000 Power. (i.e. Every 1000 Power you gain a Core)
- What's the difference between forming a new core vs. upgrading an existing one?
- Can you mix and match cores, getting a 3-level Core and 2-level upgraded core instead of 5 individual cores, for example?
- Can you define how Power Ranks fall under the stages of Cultivation? E.g. Becoming a Cultivator is Qi Condensation (Rank 1) and leaving Core Formation is Rank 50 (Power 5000?), but I recall Rank 50 is reaching Immortality?
Once you exit Core Formation stage, you have a number of major bonuses permanently locked.
When you say "permanently locked major bonuses" does that imply we get to choose what the bonuses are, and can switch between them beforehand? Or do you mean "unlock" new bonuses after leaving Core Formation.
You can negotiate it as part of a marriage contract but right now, your relationship with Myeong Kimora hasn't progressed to the point you can start penning down a marriage contract with negotiated exchanges.
How sacred is a clan's secret technique in this setting's culture:
- How often does stealing of a Secret Technique happen? If it happens is it a big deal, does it become a debacle that will involve lots of drama?
- What are the consequences of getting caught stealing; the punishments?
- Can Secret Techniques ever be traded for with favors and such instead of base currency? Does it always require a formal relationship like marriage?
- How secret is a technique kept in general; only to main branch members, only to the clan head + heir, specific to each Clan?
- Are Clans the only source of Secret Techniques? What about Sects, for example.
- Has there been a secret market/auction selling Secret Techniques in history? Can we go looking for alternatives before resorting to stealing, or is that the easiest method?
- Is the Bai's Ironwood techniques an example of a Secret Technique?
- What happens to failing Clans that can no longer keep their Techniques to themselves? Has there ever been examples of Secret Techniques being pawned off/sold as a Clan degrades?

You are more likely to become addicted at high levels of corruption. (i.e. 44 Corruption is a pretty solid chance of +1 vote towards eating cores on every action)
Can we get addicted to Cores passively while trying to purify the Corruption, or does it require us to actively eat Cores while maintaining a high Corruption level? i.e. Is it unsafe to enter high Corruption at all (very limiting), or does it need a combo of both.
I can add an action for that if you want.
You don't necessarily need to create an Action, just create a mechanic to fiddle with Tradition and integrate it with existing/normal Actions and make it available. I'm just looking for a method to start solving that hole in our fief.

You've mastered all 3 techniques. But you can train techniques to provide additional bonuses. (i.e. Heaven's Grace can be trained to give up to an additional +10 when its used)
I think a better word for it is "Learnt/Known" techniques instead of Mastered, if we still need to Train to reach the max bonus. The connotations of "Mastered" implies there's no more room for improvement, which you've said there still is.

So to confirm, we can still train all 3 Techniques? I.e. they haven't reached their max bonus yet. If so, which action applies for that, Element Training or Skill Training?
Also to confirm, is there still room for improvement in mastering Wood Element itself?

This is not correct. You can learn scrolls w/o worrying about Corruption.
The main goal of acquiring a technique is not just to learn it, but to fulfill the Hot Spring requirement to gain its 3x Cultivation Speed multiplier. It's the underlying intention in the previous discussion thus it's still a somewhat valid point.

We can learn and use a Water technique without worrying of Corruption. We can't cultivate with it using the hot springs. Ergo, stealing and learning a Technique Scroll doesn't fulfill the main objective. Priority should still be increasing Power > Versatility. Bai Shen is still under-powered until he reaches Rank 6, the lowest minimum for his position.

EDIT: Important question to consider whether meeting Kimora in Winter is wise.
ChaosCircle, can you tell us of the likelihood of Kimora getting offended if we invited her to our fief during the Winter?
- Is traveling during Winter normal in the Empire, at least for Cultivators like Kimora? Would inviting her during Winter be a burden on her?
- If she does travel to our fief, will she be stuck there for the duration of Winter, since apparently travel becomes difficult?
- Does Bai Shen know if Kimora expressed her desire to meet urgently? I.e. Is this a test made by her or just an idle wish to meet "soon" that held low expectations.
- How often are you expected to meet during courtship? I.e. We saw her recently in Summer, is a 3-month absence normal, if we delay till Spring?

Another Question:
Would there be any benefit to selling our Cao Grass to Myeong Clan, would it be the same as selling Poisons 'openly'? Do we already sell to them, and if not would changing buyers cost an action? I want to show our goodwill as we're courting Kimora, just not sure if it'd be worth our AP.

General rule of thumb for authors - don't commit to increasing the writeload. Make actions do things more powerfully, more quickly, or more widely, but additional actions rarely end well for quest quality.

There are techniques that would allow you to sit at Peak Core Formation and form additional cores. (i.e. 5000 -> 6000 but then you cycle 1000 power for an additional core) You don't know any at present.

That said, Core Formation is just setting the foundation for future advancement. You can build onto it if you want but its not without cost.

Ok so... I just found 3 glaring errors that needs some tweaking @ChaosCircle and I definitely sympathize lol:
  • There's an error in calculating Fief Tax Revenue:

Updated.

Are you sure about making it 1k Bars/Season? That's 4k/Year, a substantial boost and it doesn't match the calculations for the 1st Grain Farm.
Changed to 1k a year.

The Cultivation bonus for our Seclusion was +50: 40 from Attribute, 10 from Divine Skill. You forgot to add an extra +10 from Spirit Grains.

I'm going to ignore that because I'm already going to give you more power Power than I was supposed to.

Follow-up questions:

- What's the difference between forming a new core vs. upgrading an existing one?
New Core = New Element
Upgrading an existing Core =

- Can you mix and match cores, getting a 3-level Core and 2-level upgraded core instead of 5 individual cores, for example?
Yes.

- Can you define how Power Ranks fall under the stages of Cultivation? E.g. Becoming a Cultivator is Qi Condensation (Rank 1) and leaving Core Formation is Rank 50 (Power 5000?), but I recall Rank 50 is reaching Immortality?
Peak Core Formation = Immortality.

When you say "permanently locked major bonuses" does that imply we get to choose what the bonuses are, and can switch between them beforehand? Or do you mean "unlock" new bonuses after leaving Core Formation.
You can reforge your Cores in Core Formation. Once you exit Core Formation, your Core Formation is locked.

How sacred is a clan's secret technique in this setting's culture:
- How often does stealing of a Secret Technique happen? If it happens is it a big deal, does it become a debacle that will involve lots of drama?
Throughout the Empire? Probably once or twice a season.

Its a big deal to the clan it gets stolen from but it doesn't make waves beyond that.

- What are the consequences of getting caught stealing; the punishments?
Well, you use Ninja. The Ninja are blamed, their employer isn't. The ninja you send don't even know their employer's name.

The whole purpose of the Hidden Village system is the employer is 100% shielded from responsibility and the Hidden Village takes 100% of the blame.

- Can Secret Techniques ever be traded for with favors and such instead of base currency? Does it always require a formal relationship like marriage?
Yes but it always requires a formal marriage or other serious relationship.

- How secret is a technique kept in general; only to main branch members, only to the clan head + heir, specific to each Clan?
Only main branch members.

- Are Clans the only source of Secret Techniques? What about Sects, for example.
Sects have their own secret techniques but they aren't likely to share them.

- Has there been a secret market/auction selling Secret Techniques in history? Can we go looking for alternatives before resorting to stealing, or is that the easiest method?
No. Stealing is the easiest method. People don't sell these things as they one of the pillars of power for a Clan. Having a repository of secret techniques gives you a major advantage.

- Is the Bai's Ironwood techniques an example of a Secret Technique?
Yes.

- What happens to failing Clans that can no longer keep their Techniques to themselves? Has there ever been examples of Secret Techniques being pawned off/sold as a Clan degrades?
They marry/merge into another Clan and share their secret techniques with them.

Can we get addicted to Cores passively while trying to purify the Corruption, or does it require us to actively eat Cores while maintaining a high Corruption level? i.e. Is it unsafe to enter high Corruption at all (very limiting), or does it need a combo of both.
It requires you to eat the Cores while maintaining Corruption.

You don't necessarily need to create an Action, just create a mechanic to fiddle with Tradition and integrate it with existing/normal Actions and make it available. I'm just looking for a method to start solving that hole in our fief.
Okay.

I think a better word for it is "Learnt/Known" techniques instead of Mastered, if we still need to Train to reach the max bonus. The connotations of "Mastered" implies there's no more room for improvement, which you've said there still is.
Fair enough.

So to confirm, we can still train all 3 Techniques? I.e. they haven't reached their max bonus yet. If so, which action applies for that, Element Training or Skill Training?
Skill training.

Also to confirm, is there still room for improvement in mastering Wood Element itself?
Only by achieving Core Formation and creating a Wood Core.

The main goal of acquiring a technique is not just to learn it, but to fulfill the Hot Spring requirement to gain its 3x Cultivation Speed multiplier. It's the underlying intention in the previous discussion thus it's still a somewhat valid point.
Fair enough, I was just trying to make sure there wasn't a misunderstanding.

EDIT: Important question to consider whether meeting Kimora in Winter is wise.
ChaosCircle, can you tell us of the likelihood of Kimora getting offended if we invited her to our fief during the Winter?
She won't be offended.

- Is traveling during Winter normal in the Empire, at least for Cultivators like Kimora? Would inviting her during Winter be a burden on her?
Its generally avoided but its not an undue burden. Its basically annoying for Cultivators.

- If she does travel to our fief, will she be stuck there for the duration of Winter, since apparently travel becomes difficult?
As a cultivator? No. But she probably would come with a cultivator bodyguard plus herself rather than a full staff so its an annoyance because she has to take care of herself.

- Does Bai Shen know if Kimora expressed her desire to meet urgently? I.e. Is this a test made by her or just an idle wish to meet "soon" that held low expectations.
No.

- How often are you expected to meet during courtship? I.e. We saw her recently in Summer, is a 3-month absence normal, if we delay till Spring?
It'll be a 6 month absence if you wait until Spring.

3-6 months is normal.

You already sell it to them.

First of all, thanks for being so thorough in answering Chaos, appreciate it. Also wanted to preface the following by hoping that I'm not being a nuisance with my pestering and my record-keeping is useful for keeping track of details. Apologies if I come off as being annoying instead, let me know and I'll stop.

Errors:
Revenue: 1457 Silver Bars / Season
Treasury: 1520 Silver Bars
The latest Turn Order post still needs fixing with the new Tax Revenue changes. We had 63 Silver Bars leftover after last turn's (Fall) expenditures. So 63+1435 = 1498 (-32 Silver Bars from Treasury).
Power: 587 (+59); Rank 3
Should this be Rank 5 instead?
[ ] Hire Ninja to protect yourself against enemy Ninja. Hidden Villages were mercenaries first and foremost and would do anything for a price. It was best to have countermeasures in place before disaster struck. Provides +20 vs. Intrigue actions.
--- [ ] Through the end of the year (-600 Silver Bars)
--- [ ] Ongoing (-200 Silver Bars / Season, indefinitely)
Accounting Error: Hiring Ninja Protection cost the same 600 Silver Bars for both Summer and Fall Turn Orders, likely from Copy-Pasting. This means we paid an extra 200 Silver Bars when we hired them during Fall, it's supposed to only cost 400 Silver Bars for 2 Seasons of protection.
[ ] Acquire a Diplomat Adviser - Diplomacy was your weakest area of expertise, it was time to short that up with professional help.
Typo: short -> shore? (probably)

Main Questions:
The Myeong's gift was not a physical thing but a bargain. They would not take their usual cut of the fee for the Village Hidden in the Mountain's services when it came to the Zhou. The Zhou were a mutual enemy as far as they were concerned.
Question: Did we ever get charged for the 1st attempt at hiring Ninjas before we met Kimora? I'm not sure if we ever got charged for that, and we should subtract our funds accordingly, if not.
Out of curiosity, if we did get charged, how much did it cost? It's not directly listed and the Myeong Clan is now giving us free service so we don't know the amount.

[ ] Concoct Cultivation Aids: You are a talented alchemist, you can produce pills and incense with your own skill in the Dao of Medicine. Why not do so? (Create cultivation aids at a 50% discount; List is the standard list you rolled previously to give you an idea of the effects)
Can you add the list of Cultivation Aids to Informational so we have a reference there as there's a 'standard list' with each type having a Stock, which means they don't run out or get switched. It'd be more accessible so we can plan for using them without checking Turn results.
Also bit unclear, do the rolls for producing Cultivation Aids affect the multiplier only, or the pricing as well, or all 3 (including Corruption)?
Sects have their own secret techniques but they aren't likely to share them.
Are Sect Secret Techniques any better or easier to steal than Clans', and if so will we get the option to target them?
Well, you use Ninja. The Ninja are blamed, their employer isn't. The ninja you send don't even know their employer's name.

The whole purpose of the Hidden Village system is the employer is 100% shielded from responsibility and the Hidden Village takes 100% of the blame.
[ ] Hire Ninja to steal Technique Scrolls from a random clan. With the hot springs in play, a mastery of Earth or Water would play to your strengths. Both elements were also strong against the Fire techniques of the Zhou clan, shoring up your one weakness. Of course, you would make enemies of another clan if you were caught. So there was that.
So... just to clarify, the description of getting caught in the actual Action is revised to be completely risk-free?

Thoughts & Minor Questions:
When we do get to eventually training a Technique, there should probably be stages of progression that needs to be listed on the Informational post, so we can keep track. Just a suggestion.
Upgrading an existing Core =

Peak Core Formation = Immortality.
First line got cut-off, but I'm assuming it's supposed to be "Upgrade Element Core" or similar.

Huh, Core Formation gets you Immortality? Neat. Is there an intermediate Foundation Building realm between Qi Condensation and Core Formation? My best guess is Foundation Building would be around Rank 6, that's why Elders start there, because Rank 10 would be the start of Core Formation.
It'll be a 6 month absence if you wait until Spring.

3-6 months is normal.

But she probably would come with a cultivator bodyguard plus herself rather than a full staff so its an annoyance because she has to take care of herself.
Oops, had a brain fart. You're right, it'd be 6 months if we skip meeting Kimora this Winter. Darn, I'm somewhat on the fence but still gonna lean towards meeting her early, so we can have some flexibility for Spring's Personal Actions. Winter doesn't have much going on apparently, so we can safely meet her without urgency.

Since Kimora's Earth-aspect helps endure bad weather, hopefully that'll mitigate some of her annoyance. Can we go further by providing our staff for her usage while visiting though, or will she decline our offer as a matter of trust? (i.e. She can't trust unfamiliar servants)

On the bright side, this is good to know for planning so we know to meet Kimora twice a year or every other turn. Ideally, we should wait till Spring to meet her so the next time our meeting happens in Fall, rather than Winter again. However, I don't want to take chances on souring relations this early; better play it safe and meet her after 3 months separation, since we heard about it from Kimora telling her maid.
Then, next year with our schedule busy we can wait for 6 months and arrange the next meeting in Fall.

I'm going to ignore that because I'm already going to give you more power Power than I was supposed to.
Appreciate that, it wasn't my intention to min-max or nitpick, just pointed it out of OCD habit. So we got a flat +10 gain to Str/Agi/Con Attributes? Just curious about the improvement rather than any complaint.
