Lord of a Fief Quest [Xianxia/Western Fantasy Fusion, CK2-ish]

did you roll for the poisoning the spirit herb garden of the Zhou Clan's Heizhu Valley?

Not yet, that comes with the next update. I broke the winning plan into two parts for two posts.

Haven't fully read the update yet, but had some questions that I finally got around to gathering up @ChaosCircle:

Typo: extra 'of' is redundant.

Just wanted to confirm, out of our 6 landmark rolls, we got 2 positive (Hot spring, Spirit Grain), 2 neutral (Nothing), 2 bad "not so good" (Dire wolvesCao Grass, Outsider)?
Correct.

Could you add the Spirit Core Recipe Book to the Informational as well?
Added.

Also, do any of our allies specialize in beast taming, or are there any famous beast tamer clans that we can try to ally with by using the phoenix egg as a gift?
Allies don't, I can create an action to research that tho just remind me. It'd be a personal action.

Why were there no Archers present as part of the First Toril Foot summoned to defend Mors, are they auxiliaries that are separate? Their listed as part of our Military in the Informational.
First Toril Foot was just 1 company of foot. The other units were left behind. (i.e. Archers)

At what Rank does one become a Clan Elder? Kimora's words here implies a Fief Lord is usually Rank 6, and Bai Shen has constantly said how the position of Lordship is usually given to a trusted Clan Elder. Does this mean Elders are counted from rank 6 onwards?
Correct. I've kinda broken the game with the multiplier on power but xianxia protagonist so I can work around that.

Possible error: There's only been 3 Encounter Rolls, starting from this quote and ending with the Old Man encounter that rewarded us with the Recipe Book. What happened to the 4th Encounter roll?
1 of 2 Orc Raids, The woman alone in the mountains in Summer, 1032 - Orc Raiders, Old Man Recipe Book, Phoenix Egg

  1. Not sure if this was asked already: is there a way to close the Outsider portal?
Not to your knowledge, if you want to research it I can add an action.

  1. Since we took Cross-Cultivation knowledge, does that mean we automatically improve our Brawn/Finesse/Constitution while we cultivate Power as per normal, such as with Seclusion now?
Correct. You cultivate power at 60%, brawn/finesse/constitution at 60%.

  1. Do our Bloody Hand numbers get replenished if depleted, like our Knights?
All casualties (Bloody Hand, Knights, Standard Troops) get replaced on the Winter turn.

  1. Could you add the location of the Spirit Density 2 area that we found during survey to the Map threadmark? I believe it still requires us to build a spirit grain farm there, so will that be included as a Turn Action as I didn't see it in the previous Turn Action vote?
I forgot about it tbh, I'll try to get to it this weekend. If I forget again, remind me.

  1. Is there a Diplomat Adviser position that we can create or fill? I noticed it's our weakest field with only a +10 Bonus.

I was trying to leave you weak in one area but I can create an action for an official diplomat.

  1. Does the Alchemy (Learning) Boost of +30 for Turn Actions come from Divine Luck (+10) and Pill Forger trait (+20)?
Pill forger only counts for pill creation. You have +20 Alchemy and Divine Luck +10.

  1. Just to confirm, will Divine Luck (+10) boost apply to cultivation actions? And does it affect Martial rolls, for example in a Duel?

Yes.

  1. If we get ourselves a bladed spirit treasure, can we still use Ironwood Blade technique in conjunction to boost the spirit treasure itself? Or does Ironwood Blade only create its own constructs?
The latter. Per the tropes of the genre, you'd want flying swords that are spirit treasures.

  1. What Rank is Bai Shen's father as compared to the the previous deceased Clan Head?

You don't know but I'd peg him at an extremely high power level relative to you.

  1. What element does our Stewardship Adviser Liu Chen specialize in, if any?
None.

  1. Was Bai Shen able to detect the Power Rank of the allies he invited to his birthday party? If not, could he tell who was stronger or weaker than him?
They were on par with him.

If we stack all the multipliers, it gets crazy but not sure if that's intended:
2x*2.5x*3x*3x*3x*3x = 405x Speed (Seclusion + Hot Spring + Spirit Stones + Cultivation Aids)
Typo: hand -> had
I didn't quite intend for it to get to 405x tbh. Thoughts on rebalancing it now or should I wait for you to complete this action? ;)

I may just allow it and rebalance the ranks tbh.

Wait a fucking minute... can't believe I almost missed the fine print: it says 'use one per cultivation action, items are consumed on use.' Does this mean we have to buy double of each type to cover our 2 rounds of cultivation, or does paying 200 Silver Bars give us enough to cover both actions?
Yes, you have to pay double. You have to pay 400 Silver Bars to cover both actions. The multiplier gets absurd but that is why its expensive.

That's important, because it gets expensive FAST if we have to buy double for each type. The expenses balloon from 600 Silver Bars -> 1200 Silver Bars and we'd need to sell more assets just to afford the costs.

I really hope this isn't the case.
Your hopes are dashed, sorry.

Between this and hunting for fresh cores, we'll gain significant power boosts, most likely. Enough to prove useful.

You should sell some stones to make up the debt, maybe just the rank 1 stones

Given I adjusted the rules, I'm going to give people until 9-10 AM EST tomorrow to adjust their plans, there will be no vote today.

Alright, I've edited my Plan, for those voting for Plan Cover Debt, Conserve Stones:
[ ] Plan Cover Debt, Conserve Stones
-[ ] Use each type of Cultivation Aid once per cultivation action. (-1200 Silver Bars)
-[ ] Heartwood Incense - 3x Cultivation Speed - 200 Silver Bars, 2d6 Corruption, Stock: 5
-[ ] Daoseed Pill - 3x Cultivation Speed - 200 Silver Bars, 2d6 Corruption, Stock: 5
-[ ] Spiritual Energy Concentrator Array - 3x Cultivation Speed - 200 Silver Bars, 2d6 Corruption, Stock: 5
-[ ] Sell 800 Rank 1 Spirit Stones + 70 Rank 2 Spirit Stones (+1500 Silver Bars) to cover Debt & Cultivation Aid costs.
The only thing that changes is selling most of our Rank 2 Spirit Stones which covers all our debt & (updated) cultivation costs, leaving us with Ten Rank 2 + Two Rank 3 Spirit Stones leftover. Honestly, the only difference with Plan keep debt down is saving 10 Rank 2 stones.

Summary of current Plans:
Plan keep debt down
Uses 3x Speed Cultivation Aids and sells All Rank 1+2 Spirit Stones. (163 Silver Bars, Two Rank 3 Stones leftover)

Plan Cover Debt, Conserve Stones
Uses 3x Speed Cultivation Aids and sells All Rank 1 Spirit Stones, most of Rank 2 Stones. (63 Silver Bars, 10 Rank 2 Stones, Two Rank 3 Stones leftover)

Plan Save Money
Uses 2x Speed Cultivation Aids and sells no Spirit Stones, staying in debt till next turn income. (-537 Silver Bars, 800 Rank 1 Stones, 80 Rank 2 Stones, Two Rank 3 Stones leftover)

EDIT: Had some more questions @ChaosCircle.
Since Bai Shen has started to gain Traits that give Martial bonuses, will it be added to the Turn Action bonus for Martial actions? Right now, the bonus is +30 (Bai Chenshen + Divine Luck), so it could go up to +33 if we include it.
If a named character is a cultivator, it is assumed that they take this personal action if no actions are specified. (i.e. Your advisers will gain power each turn they can cultivate normally)
Just wanted to clarify, our advisers will cultivate normally every turn unless we assign them to Seclusion right?
I was trying to leave you weak in one area but I can create an action for an official diplomat.
Well, it is your prerogative as QM to make it so, but it just seems weird to not have a Diplomat position considering the feudal setting this takes place in.
You don't know but I'd peg him at an extremely high power level relative to you.
Wait, so Bai Shen doesn't know how strong his own father is, or is this referring to the old Clan Head that died in Guilin?

Also, the Bloody Hand is an elite troop unit made up of regular mortals, not cultivators right?

Yeah, I forgot to update the post since I just copy/pasted.

Correct.

Yeah I'll add the option, just remind me if I forget.

Wait, so Bai Shen doesn't know how strong his own father is, or is this referring to the old Clan Head that died in Guilin?

Both. Spirit sense isn't a precise measure mechanically so he knows he is substantially stronger but not how that translates into numbers.

Also, the Bloody Hand is an elite troop unit made up of regular mortals, not cultivators right?
Correct. They are mortals at peak mortal, with enough resources they could be upgraded to cultivators.

[X] Plan: Sabotage and Cultivation
-[X] Hire Ninja to poison the spirit herb garden of the Zhou Clan's Heizhu Valley. If their products became unsafe, sales would dwindle and the damage it would do to their reputation would be irreparable. Of course, they could do the same thing to you...something to think about when you plotted your next move. (20% penalty to income to Heizhu Valley for 2 years until memories fade)
-[X] Seclusion: Seclusion is a personal action that consumes all personal actions for a given turn in return for doubling your Cultivation rate for that turn.
--[X] Use maximum Cultivation Aids & Spirit Stones per round of cultivation. (One Rank 4 Spirit Stone, ten Rank 3 Spirit Stones for 3x speed per round)

As you made your preparations to go into seclusion, word reached you of the results of your only secret order. It was an attempt to poison the spirit herb gardens of the Zhou Clan's Heizhu Valley. An infamous act that would weaken their economic position even further. Unfortunately, news returned that the ninja team that was sent in were all killed before they could complete their mission. It was an unfortunate outcome and you would have to rely on the above board method of simply flooding the market with alchemical products to weaken the Zhou Clan's resolve to wage its secret war against you.

Your affairs settled in Toril, you journeyed to the cultivation resort you established around the Holy Waters Hot Spring. It would be good to take a few months to yourself and focus entirely on meditation and cultivation. The expensive cultivation aids you purchased would improve matters substantially and you were certain you would exceed the 4th rank by the time you were done with your cultivation.

After a few months of secluded mediation, you emerged with the power of a 6th rank cultivator. An impressive improvement considering it only took you a few months time. Soon, you were confident you would catch up to the ranks of your peers and enjoy the privileges of the 6th rank of cultivation.

You returned to Toril ready to settle in for the peaceful winter months, the safest and least eventful part of the year in the Seto Region. The fiefs would be locked in by heavy snowfall within the first month and trade would cease, leaving each fief isolated from the others.

You returned to a litany of reports from your spies, most of which were largely background details and rumors that were of little use to you. However, a few items stood out among the avalanche of information.

The first was that the Lord of Heizhu Valley had stopped consuming cultivation aids altogether. It seemed he intended to focus on his war with you and spend that cash elsewhere. That was both a good and a bad sign. In theory, you could eclipse his cultivation and challenge him directly. However, he was a cultivator of unknown power and might be of the 7th or even higher rank. It would be a risky gamble to do so. The reason it was bad was, well, you could expect more than well trained orcs to begin to assault your province. You had weakened their economic situation by hundreds of silver bars but that was no guarantee they lacked the funds to actually attack you.

The next bit of information was Myeong Kimora expected to be invited back for tea. She had mentioned as much to her lady's maid. You probably should get around to doing that as soon as practical. Winter might not be the best season for a social call but certainly by spring, if you were interested you needed to continue to express an interest in her or she might move on.

The last bit of information was that Lord Kim of the Riverlands had begun to delve into techniques most considered forbidden. He was seeking contact with the Outside. You could use this information to blackmail him or report him to the appropriate authorities. The choice was yours.

Strategic Actions (Pick 5; Please vote by Plan)

Casualties are recovered on the Winter turn.

You may write in actions that are not listed if you so desire. Please @ me so I can confirm they are valid and give details.

Revenue:
1435 Silver Bars / Season
Treasury: 1498 Silver Bars

Actions are DC 50 unless specifically mentioned or contested (i.e. Acting against someone such as Flood the Market is an opposed check to determine effects).

Alchemy aka Learning (+30)

[ ] Flood the Market - The Zhou Clan depended on revenues from Heizhu Valley to prosecute their war against you. If you disrupted that flow of income, you would disrupt their ability to attack you directly. Of course, this was not free. It would cost you 500 Silver Bars / Season in losses from your Alchemy products. That said, your spies estimated that would choke off almost all the money your enemies could afford to spend attacking you. A fair trade? You decide.

[ ] Cultivation Aids - With the new hot spring, you were tempted to go into Seclusion. Winter was a relatively safe season to do so. The only problem is to make best use of your time you would need to source more than common pills and cultivation aids. You would need the high end products the powerful nobility normally reserved for themselves. This would cost you something and some time but the results would be worth it. 1x - 5x cultivation speed increase, depending on rolls, corruption, and spend (0-400 silver bars). These can be shared with your retainers if you so choose for additional cost.

[ ] Begin research into cheap single-use grenades - You had a wild hair of an idea of providing alchemical grenades to common troops to take out large quantities of orcs. You are not sure exactly how long this research will take or even if it will be successful. However, grenadiers would likely simplify your conflicts with the Orcs substantially and create results in your favor.

[ ] Experimentation (DC 100) - You had an entire guild of Alchemists at your beck and call. It was time to fund some R&D and see what they could come up with. New products were new sources of revenue and you needed money for your clan's cold war with Zhou. The only real problem was research was high risk and there could be catastrophic failures and casualties. That said, funding it was relatively cheap and would not substantially impact your budget.

[ ] Enhance Spirit Grain Production (DC 100) - A steady diet of spirit grain was important to cultivation and you intended to have the best spirit grain in the Seto region. Of course the selective breeding spirit-energy infused rice was a time consuming endeavor and was fraught with difficulties. That said, why not shoot for the stars?

[ ] Enhance Spirit Herb Garden Yield (DC 100) - You needed spirit herbs for your alchemists and leveraging your existing garden to yield more products was an endeavor worth engaging in. It would increase the profits from your Alchemy guild as well as your own personal cultivation power. The finest pills and cultivation aids required the finest ingredients money could buy, after all.

Diplomacy (+10)

[ ] Acquire a Diplomat Adviser - Diplomacy was your weakest area of expertise, it was time to shore that up with professional help. Have your spies seek out information on various candidates, screen them, then send the short list to you so that you might interview them for the position.

[ ] Parley with the Zhou Clan - Perhaps you could work out some sort of arrangement that would nip this cold war in the bud. Paying a little tribute and losing a little face was a small price for peace, wasn't it? It certainly would save you on military expenses! Of course, it would make your clan look weak as well and could you really stand for that? Perhaps you could, perhaps you could.

[ ] Call in a favor - Conflict with the Zhou Clan was the sort of thing the Bai Clan at a whole should be handling, not you alone and isolated on the frontier of civilization. Your family owed you a favor for employing Bai Chenshen. It was time to call it in for support against the Zhou Clan.

[ ] Hold a party and summon various neighbors to participate. - It was time to get to know the neighbors and expand your understanding of the Seto Region. However, a party worthy of Rank 6 Cultivators would be expensive to throw costing you 300 Silver Bars.

Martial (+33)

[ ] Military Reforms (Pick any combination of the following declarations)
--- [ ] 200 Silver Bars / Season - Increase pay for your existing troops, increases Tradition by 10. Increases the cost of all Increase Military Spending options by 10%.
--- [ ] Landed Pensions - Pensioners are granted land to grow rice in your villages as freeholders. This annoys your Knights (-10 Loyalty) but increases Tradition by 10.
--- [ ] Meritocracy - Promote men based on merit, not connections, to improve the effectiveness of your army. This will annoy some of the existing leadership. -10 Tradition; +10 Effectiveness
--- [ ] Looters' Rights - Your men may keep loot earned in battle but they might be a bit aggressive at declaring what loot is "theirs". +5 Tradition; Some chance of incidents when involving third parties in your battles.

[ ] Increase Military Spending (Pick any combination of the following options)
--- [ ] 200 Silver Bars / Season - Hire an adventuring party in Summer to fight the Orcs and/or Spirit Beasts. (4 Rank 3 Cultivators to fight on your behalf for each Summer)
--- [ ] 200 Silver Bars / Season - Hire 1 Rank 3 Knight to fight on your behalf, a Lord's Champion if you will.
--- [ ] 200 Silver Bars / Season - Add 1 company of Cavalry to your forces, a quick reaction force to deal with problems.
--- [ ] 200 Silver Bars / Season - Add 2 companies of Infantry to garrison your most vulnerable villages.

[ ] Increase the size of the Bloody Hand from 20 to 40 Soldiers. This costs 200 Silver Bars / Season to sustain but provides you with an effective company worth of fighting force.

[ ] Send the Bloody Hand into Cultivation so that they may enter Qi Condensation Stage and advance in Power. This requires a substantial expenditure of 2000 Silver Bars to fund pills and incense to enable them to breakthrough to the Qi Condensation Stage, enabling them to gain a cultivate action.

[ ] Border Forts - Establish a network of small forts to alert you to the presence of raiders and also to hold against those same raiders until reinforcements arrive. It would make you look good to your people and if you were expecting increased raids, it would reduce the damage they caused to your lands. This will strengthen you against Orc Raids but weaken you against Bandit Raids.

[ ] Heavy Road Patrols - Build defensible posts along the road to the Imperial Highway upon which most of your trade flows and establish heavier patrols along the roads. It will weaken your defense against Orc Raids but will strengthen you against Bandit Raids.

Stewardship (+60)

[ ] Industrial R&D (DC 100; Project complexity varies and sometimes multiple successes will be required depending on the option you pick) - The obvious ways to improve revenue for the Bloodthorne Fief have been largely exhausted, it was time to move on to breaking new ground and discovering new technologies which might enable you to produce more with the quantity of workers you had. You cannot afford to feed more people without greater revenues and already your existing farmland is fully occupied. Economic might is what will win your war with the Zhou Clan so it was time to move onto projects that were relevant in that regard.
--- [ ] If you have a specific idea you want to implement, write in. Otherwise, I'll come up with one at random to be your success.

[ ] Tax Reform - Now that you have settled in and surveyed what there is to survey, you have some ideas on how to increase tax revenue. It may not result in a great inflow of cash but it is something. Increases tax revenue by 150 Silver Bars / Season.

[ ] Develop a Spirit Grain Farm on the second Spirit Density 2 site in the province - Yields 1000 Silver Bars / Year once operational. Costs 2000 Silver Bars to secure the area and buy enough seed grain to begin operations.

Intrigue (+30)

[ ] Hire human bandits to plague Heizhu Valley. Attacking trade caravans, raiding villages, and generally making a nuisance of themselves. This is similar to Orc Raids but more politically acceptable if you get caught, the more you spend the more damage you will do. Of course, humans are less effective raiders than Orcs so you can expect a step less damage to be inflicted.
--- [ ] 200 Silver Bars
--- [ ] 400 Silver Bars
--- [ ] 600 Silver Bars

[ ] Hire Orcs to raid Heizhu Valley. An Orc Tribe will raid Heizhu Valley instead of their current target, this may or may not reduce the number of raids you experience this Summer. The net result will be a degree of damage to Heizhu Valley, the exact effectiveness will be directly related to how much you spend. Of course the more you spend, the more likely it is tongues will wag and you will get "caught".
--- [ ] 200 Silver Bars
--- [ ] 400 Silver Bars
--- [ ] 600 Silver Bars

[ ] Hire Ninja to protect yourself against enemy Ninja. Hidden Villages were mercenaries first and foremost and would do anything for a price. It was best to have countermeasures in place before disaster struck. Provides +20 vs. Intrigue actions.
--- [ ] Through the end of next year (-800 Silver Bars)
--- [ ] Ongoing (-200 Silver Bars / Season, indefinitely)

[ ] Hire Ninja to poison the Lord of Heizhu Valley. It would be a slow acting poison, one that would need to be administered multiple times in succession, but it would send a very strong message to leave you alone to the Zhou Clan. Powerful cultivators were difficult to replace. Of course, it also invited retaliation in kind so it would be best to have your defenses in place in the event you went through with this. This action must be taken multiple times on consecutive turns to be successful. A single failure will not reset the counter to 0 since poison does damage even if it isn't fatal, merely alert the enemy to your actions.

[ ] Hire Ninja to poison the spirit herb garden of the Zhou Clan's Heizhu Valley. If their products became unsafe, sales would dwindle and the damage it would do to their reputation would be irreparable. Of course, they could do the same thing to you...something to think about when you plotted your next move. (20% penalty to income to Heizhu Valley for 2 years until memories fade)

[ ] Hire Ninja to steal Technique Scrolls from the Zhou Clan. You might not be a master of Fire but sometimes it was best to fight fire with fire. You would discover their techniques, master them, master their chosen element and face your enemies with their own power. It also wouldn't hurt to have access to the element you were weakest against. ( Accelerates Element mastery time from 2 years to 3 months. )

[ ] Hire Ninja to steal Technique Scrolls from a random clan. With the hot springs in play, a mastery of Earth or Water would play to your strengths. Both elements were also strong against the Fire techniques of the Zhou clan, shoring up your one weakness. Of course, you would make enemies of another clan if you were caught. So there was that. ( Accelerates Element mastery time from 2 years to 3 months. )
--- [ ] Earth
--- [ ] Water
--- [ ] Some other element

Personal Actions (2 Actions; Each may be taken multiple times)
[ ] Social Actions (You may take 2 of these in exchange for 1 personal action)
--- [ ] Have Liu Chen over for tea.
--- [ ] Have Wong Hui over for tea.
--- [ ] Have Bai Chenshen over for tea.
--- [ ] Have tea with the head of the Adventurer's Guild
--- [ ] Have tea with the head of the Alchemist's Guild
--- [ ] Have tea with the mayor of Toril
--- [ ] Have a Knight over for tea. (Knight selected randomly at first so I don't have to list out fifteen options today with no real IC knowledge of what they mean)
--- [ ] Have a random Lord over for tea. (Lord is selected randomly from the Seto region as you don't know have pull in the Seto Region.)
--- [ ] Have tea with Myeong Kimora
--- [ ] Have tea with Nae Fang
--- [ ] Have tea with Ka Rushan
--- [ ] Have tea with Han Xin

[ ] Research Beast Taming Clans: A phoenix egg is valuable and a good opening gift to the right person, you just needed to figure out who the right person was.

[ ] The Outsider Portal: There must be a way to close it, you should investigate your options and send for books on the subject immediately!

[ ] Purge the wolves: Lead an expedition to purge the wolf pack that exists in your lands. They need to be dealt with eventually.

[ ] Call in a favor: The Bai Clan owes you a favor, its time to call it in.
--- [ ] Write in what you want.

[ ] A Visit to the Imperial Court: The Imperial Court is the main power center in the entire Empire. Han Xin suggested you visit, you could take him up on the offer and have him show you around and meet eligible women. It could broaden your marriage options but you probably do not want to visit if you have a high corruption stat. People with Corruption-sense exist at the Imperial Court, its a rare talent but one that has its uses in politics.

[ ] Purchase technique scroll(s): Costs vary depending on the quality and rank of the technique scroll. For your current level, costs are about 500 Silver Bars for an average quality technique. High quality techniques double the price. Secret techniques are not for sale and must be stolen.
--- [ ] Write in technique you want to learn.
--- [ ] Water and Earth cultivation techniques to build an elemental affinity to gain access to the extra .5 from the Culitvation Resort are options to look for but their effectiveness is less than stealing a bunch of technique scrolls related to it.
--- [ ] You may name as many techniques as you like, although the fewer you name the more options you will receive for purchase.

[ ] Purchase spirit treasure(s): Costs vary depending on the quality and rank of the spirit treasure. Rank 3 spirit treasures of high quality generally cost around 1000 Silver Bars per treasure. Rank 4 of high quality would cost around 2000 Silver Bars per treasure. Rank 5 of high quality would cost around 4000 Silver Bars per treasure. etc. Generally, you would not buy spirit treasures of lower rank than yourself.
--- [ ] Name a spirit treasure you are looking for. (i.e. Flying Sword)
--- [ ] You may name as many spirit treasures as you like, although the fewer you name the more options you will receive for purchase.

[ ] Alchemical Purification: You must cleanse yourself of corruption if you are to advance through Cultivation. This is basically taking the Purification action except enhanced by expensive drugs. It costs 1000 Silver Bars.
++ Corruption Reduced by (1d100+Cultivation)/10.

[ ] Purification: You must cleanse yourself of corruption if you are to advance through Cultivation. This is the process by which impurities are purged from the flesh and the soul and you are covered in a black gunk.
++ Corruption Reduced by (1d100+Purification)/25

[ ] Go Hunting for Cores: There were powerful spirit beasts in the Tian Shen mountains. You had the power to kill them solo or with a retinue. It was time to take advantage of that power and acquire more spirit cores to consume. You needed more power, corruption was a cost you were willing to pay.
--- [ ] Alone
----- [ ] Use Recipe Book
----- [ ] Don't use Recipe Book
--- [ ] With a Retinue (Removes downside of bad rolls in terms of personal harm)
----- [ ] Use Recipe Book
----- [ ] Don't use Recipe Book

[ ] Cultivation: Cultivation is a standard personal action that causes a cultivator to cultivate. If a named character is a cultivator, it is assumed that they take this personal action if no actions are specified. (i.e. Your advisers will gain power each turn they can cultivate normally)
++ (1d100+Cultivation)/10 Power * 2.5 (Resort bonus) Increase.

[ ] Seclusion: Seclusion is a personal action that consumes all personal actions for a given turn in return for doubling your Cultivation rate for that turn.
++ 2x Cultivation, each action consumed is the equivalent of one Cultivate action.
++ Characters in Seclusion have 50% passive resistance to assassination attempts.
--- Characters in Seclusion are unavailable to respond to intra-turn crises that might arise, such as orc raids.
--- Characters in Seclusion do not provide their normal bonuses (such as an Intrigue Adviser providing Intrigue Bonuses) as they are considered unavailable for that turn.

[ ] Acquire Alchemy Formulae: You are a talented alchemist but the recipes you know are limited. Why not expand your repertoire with a bit of research and experimentation?
--- [ ] Write In what sort of pill you want to research. Combat enhancing pills and such are options.

[ ] Concoct Cultivation Aids: You are a talented alchemist, you can produce pills and incense with your own skill in the Dao of Medicine. Why not do so? (Create cultivation aids at a 50% discount; List is the standard list you rolled previously to give you an idea of the effects)

[ ] Train Skill: Cultivation was not the only way to advance in the world. Grandmasters of martial arts can fight above their cultivation level to an impressive degree. You could seek to become such a master of a given skill.
-- [ ] Write In Skill (i.e. Cultivation, Purification). You can also request a skill not currently on the sheet that makes logical sense. (i.e. Martial Arts)

[ ] Train Element: Your mastery of wood would be well complimented by a variety of elements such as Earth and Water that would help you resist Fire-focused cultivators. As you approach Core Formation, you should focus on acquiring another element to shore up your weaknesses. Note: This takes 16 personal actions without a technique scroll.
--- [ ] Write in Element to Learn

Do you send any advisers into Seclusion?

[ ] Write in names (if any)

Deal with Ka Rushan

[ ] Buy 6 Rank 3 Spirit Stones at a 10% discount. This would cost you 540 Silver Bars. (Because I forgot this option for the Fall Turn, not normally available)
[ ] Buy 3 Rank 3 Spirit Stones at a 10% discount. This would cost you 270 Silver Bars.
[ ] Do not buy Spirit Stones this Turn.

Lord Kim of the Riverlands

[ ] Report him to the Imperial Court and collect a reward of 20 Rank 3 Spirit Stones as a token of gratitude.
[ ] Blackmail him
--- [ ] For what?

Cultivation Multiplier:
2 (Seclusion) + 2.5 (Springs) + 3 (Spirit Stones) + 3 (Incense) + 3 (Pill) + 3 (Concentrator Array) = 16.5x per action
6d6 Corruption gained per action (Pill+Incense+Concentrator Array)

1D100+50-4 => 106 / 10 = 10.6 * 16.5 = +174.9 Power
6D6 => +24 Corruption

1D100+50-28 => 98 / 10 = 9.8 * 16.5 = +161.7 Power
6D6 => +16 Corruption

Hire Ninja to poison the spirit herb garden: 1D100+30 => 43 vs. 63

Liu Chen: 1D100+20 => 48 / 10 = 4.8 * 2.5 = 12 Power
Wong Hui: 1D100+20 => 118 / 10 = 11.8 * 2.5 = 30 Power
Bai Chenshen: 1D100+20 => 112 / 10 = 11.2 * 2.5 = 28 Power

[X] Plan we need more everything
-[X] Flood the Market - The Zhou Clan depended on revenues from Heizhu Valley to prosecute their war against you. You decide.
-[X] Acquire a Diplomat Adviser - Diplomacy was your weakest area of expertise, it was time to short that up with professional help. Have your spies seek out information on various candidates, screen them, then send the short list to you so that you might interview them for the position.
-[X] Tax Reform - Now that you have settled in and surveyed what there is to survey, you have some ideas on how to increase tax revenue. It may not result in a great inflow of cash but it is something. Increases tax revenue by 150 Silver Bars / Season.
-[X] Enhance Spirit Grain Production (DC 100) - A steady diet of spirit grain was important to cultivation and you intended to have the best spirit grain in the Seto region. Of course the selective breeding spirit-energy infused rice was a time consuming endeavor and was fraught with difficulties. That said, why not shoot for the stars?
-[X] Hire Ninja to steal Technique Scrolls from a random clan. With the hot springs in play, a mastery of Earth or Water would play to your strengths. Both elements were also strong against the Fire techniques of the Zhou clan, shoring up your one weakness. Of course, you would make enemies of another clan if you were caught. So there was that. ( Accelerates Element mastery time from 2 years to 3 months. )
--[X] Water
-[X] Social Actions (You may take 2 of these in exchange for 1 personal action)
--[X] Have tea with the head of the Adventurer's Guild
--[X] Have tea with Myeong Kimora
-[X] Purification: You must cleanse yourself of corruption if you are to advance through Cultivation. This is the process by which impurities are purged from the flesh and the soul and you are covered in a black gunk.
++ Corruption Reduced by (1d100+Purification)/25
-[X] Buy 6 Rank 3 Spirit Stones at a 10% discount. This would cost you 540 Silver Bars. (Because I forgot this option for the Fall Turn, not normally available)

[X] Blackmail him
--[X] His old cultivation technique, since he is trying to use forbidden techniques, he won't need his old ones. Also, during negotiations, can offer any outsider part we have for sale, maybe a future deal seeing as how we have a rift to deal with

blackmail as separate vote, because I'm not sure what else to ask for

-[X] Experimentation (DC 100) - You had an entire guild of Alchemists at your beck and call. It was time to fund some R&D and see what they could come up with. The only real problem was research was high risk and there could be catastrophic failures and casualties. That said, funding it was relatively cheap and would not substantially impact your budget.

We still have ninjas protecting us this turn and it's better to have our tea with Myeong Kimora during spring. Still unsure about what to do with the blackmail

Darn, the Ninja action failed a second time, that sucks. I think we should invest in other actions rather than keep hitting our heads on that particularly unlucky brick wall, at least for now. The Zhou Clan have probably gotten suspicious of the pattern of attacks by now.

Alright, so lots to do. First off guys, please discuss your thoughts first before voting because there's suggestions for potential turn actions yet to be added and questions that might affect Planning.
For those voting for previous Plans, consider the following:
  1. We already hired Ninja Protection covering us for this Winter turn. Using up 1 Action to do so again is redundant until next Turn when it'll expire.
  2. Bai Shen is now a Rank 5 Cultivator. Rank 3 Spirit Stones are likely useless on him, it will only help if we spend it on our Advisers who're reaching it soon. One Rank 3 Stone per Cultivation Action is enough to subsidize a Rank 3 Cultivator, they are still Rank 2.
  3. We are probably reporting Lord Kim to the Imperial Court, gaining us +20 Rank 3 Stones (2000 Silver Bars). It's better to save our money till we actually need those Spirit Stones, especially with Zhou Clan war heating up.
  4. We have a -44 Corruption malus to Cultivation. We aren't able to cultivate efficiently a stolen Technique Scroll anytime soon until we take several turns of purification, better to hold off until it's relevant.
  5. Seems a bit weird to ask Lord Kim for his old cultivation techniques, which he's abandoning, implying it's somehow less effective. Making a deal to sell Outsider parts to him attracts his attention to our Fief and we just blackmailed a heretical, untrustworthy Lord that's more powerful than us.
  6. Please reconsider investing in any Research actions until we've got a breathing room to perform a high risk & time consuming endeavor. Research improves our revenue or cultivation aids, but we have plenty of easier low-hanging fruit like that 2nd Spirit Grain farm which could potentially net us +1000 Silver Bars, for example. And remember last turn we built those expensive River Mills? Here's what they depend on:
It required a substantial investment in coin but it would repay you back in a year or two as long as you defended the heart of your fief against the Orcs. Given you intended to kill Orcs and harvest their cores for techniques whenever the opportunity presented itself, it was a done deal that you would protect your fief against all comers.

Here's my initial Plan for discussion:

[ ] Plan Prepare for Cold War
-[ ] Flood the Market - The Zhou Clan depended on revenues from Heizhu Valley to prosecute their war against you. You decide.
-[ ] Acquire a Diplomat Adviser - Diplomacy was your weakest area of expertise, it was time to short that up with professional help. Have your spies seek out information on various candidates, screen them, then send the short list to you so that you might interview them for the position.
-[ ] Border Forts - Establish a network of small forts to alert you to the presence of raiders and also to hold against those same raiders until reinforcements arrive. It would make you look good to your people and if you were expecting increased raids, it would reduce the damage they caused to your lands. This will strengthen you against Orc Raids but weaken you against Bandit Raids.
-[ ] Heavy Road Patrols - Build defensible posts along the road to the Imperial Highway upon which most of your trade flows and establish heavier patrols along the roads. It will weaken your defense against Orc Raids but will strengthen you against Bandit Raids.
-[ ] Tax Reform - Now that you have settled in and surveyed what there is to survey, you have some ideas on how to increase tax revenue. It may not result in a great inflow of cash but it is something. Increases tax revenue by 150 Silver Bars / Season.
-[ ] Purification: You must cleanse yourself of corruption if you are to advance through Cultivation. This is the process by which impurities are purged from the flesh and the soul and you are covered in a black gunk.
++ Corruption Reduced by (1d100+Purification)/25
-[ ] Social Actions (You may take 2 of these in exchange for 1 personal action)
--- [ ] Have Wong Hui over for tea.
--- [ ] Have tea with Myeong Kimora.
-[ ] Send Liu Chen to Seclusion with Two Rank 2 Spirit Stones for 2x Speed.
-[ ] Report him to the Imperial Court and collect a reward of 20 Rank 3 Spirit Stones as a token of gratitude.
-[ ] Do not buy Spirit Stones this Turn.

Reasonings for my Plan:
  • Continue to 'Flood the Market' as economic warfare is heating up, don't let up the pressure and momentum.
  • Border Forts and Road Patrols (which builds defensible posts despite the name) so we are prepared for any Raids next year, there's lots of hints that it'll get more intense. With how Zhou Clan is focusing on fighting us, I'm betting they will hire conventional bandit raids, not just Orcs.
  • Normal Purification to reduce the large amounts of Corruption we gained this turn. Alchemical Purification is too expensive after our Seclusion spending spree, we need to conserve funds.
  • It reflects better upon us if we reach out to Kimora during the winter. It shows our resolve & commitment despite the difficulties of meeting her during Winter, when the snow prevents much travel. While she isn't annoyed, she's already made a note of it to her maid and it's important to quickly address such issues before they devolve into uncharitable thoughts, if we want to build a strong foundation for marriage.
  • Social Wong Hui so we can improve the loyalty of our Intrigue Adviser as the Zhou Clan war will have lots of skulduggery going on.
  • We don't have enough funds available to buy a decent or similar Ranked Spirit Treasure or Technique Scroll for Bai Shen. Plus, there's a higher priority for us to reach the minimum Power Rank 6 that Elders/Fief Lords usually are before looking to expand our repertoire.
  • Element Training is redundant atm as we don't have any relevant Techniques to train with it.
  • Acquire Alchemy Formula is interesting as I'm hoping to develop one that counteracts the addiction or Corruption from consuming Cores, but that's not a immediate priority as it's research that can wait until we've taken precautions on our current issues.
  • Send one of our Advisers to Seclusion while it's Winter to take advantage of the relative peace. Initially wanted Bai Chenshen as our most loyal retainer, but we need his Martial bonus. Went for Chamberlain cuz he's weakest and we still have +30 Boost to Stewardship actions without his bonus.
  • Report Lord Kim because we don't want to get involved in Shady Politics when our Clan is already walking on a tightrope due to weakening. If we want Secret Techniques it's better to steal them from the Clan that's not dealing with Outsiders since those might be Corruption-related, like Nae Clan's Devouring Path. Furthermore, opportunity cost: we have a method to steal Secret Techniques; we don't have a free, easy way to get Imperial Reputation/Favor.

Obligatory reminders for @ChaosCircle on potential Turn Actions:
  1. Create Stewardship Action: Developing a Spirit Grain Farm on the Spirit Density 2 area we found. (Plus add it to the Informational Map)
  2. Create Personal Action: Research on Beast Taming Clans to ally with by gifting the Phoenix Egg.
  3. Create Martial Action: Increase the unit size of Bloody Hand directly, rather than the general Fief Military. Sub-vote: Option to raise Bloody Hand into cultivators.
Onto my questions:
  1. Can we eventually increase the number of Turn Actions, if so how?
  2. Can we approach allied Clans to trade for Secret Techniques, particularly someone like Myeong Clan, as a potential marriage alliance is a stronger bargaining position?
  3. Does existing Corruption affect the amount of power consuming a Core will give, or does it only affect normal Cultivation?
  4. Does eating less fresh Cores affect the amount of power it gives, or does it only increase Corruption gained?
  5. Do Spirit Stones of a lesser rank still provide any bonuses to Cultivation at all, if they are less than the 10:1 ratio to achieve a similar rank as the Cultivator?
  6. So Bai Shen has mastered the Wood Element itself? Have we mastered all our known Techniques (2 Wood, 1 Heaven), and do we need to train Heaven's Grace since it's recently acquired?
  7. Is there a difference between learning Techniques by consuming Cores vs. learning from a Technique Scroll?
  8. Are there any products that boost Purification results with multipliers?
  9. Will we get options to increase the tradition of our Tax Office in Stewardship actions? Seems weird that's the Area with lowest amount of options, considering our +60 Boost.
  10. Can you give us a Price Range estimate for buying a Rank 5 Water Technique, as an example? We have only have an estimate for quality and it'd be a waste of action if it turned out we didn't have enough funds due to adjusting for Rank.
  11. I assume trading with Ka Clan for Spirit Stones is available for most of the year except for Winter? (We can buy in Spring next turn)
  12. Do we need to micromanage our Adviser's Corruption if we spend Cultivation Aids on them?
  13. Can we return to the Rank 10 Spirit Mine next year to scavenge for more Spirit Stones dislodged by the Spirit Beast living there without trying to secure the whole place?
  14. What was the result of our Cross-Cultivation attribute gains (Brawn/Finesse/Con) for this turn of Seclusion?

-[] Hire Ninja to protect yourself against enemy Ninja. Hidden Villages were mercenaries first and foremost and would do anything for a price. It was best to have countermeasures in place before disaster struck. Provides +20 vs. Intrigue actions.
--[] Ongoing (-200 Silver Bars / Season, indefinitely)
We already hired ninjas for protection this turn, can you switch it out for something else?
