Letting Go (Worm/Exalted)

8 - Taylor
-8-

Once more I found myself watching as my surroundings were stripped bare by the silent winds. Or should I say, The Silent Wind. This time, the small guest room at the PRT headquarters - with its blue-sheeted single-bed, built-in wardrobe and ensuite - had disintegrated to reveal the sheer absence of any upper floors. I was left with a view of the entire Bay, or at least what was left of it, distorted by a crimson haze. The silence was unnatural. I had already become accustomed to Sorrowful Hymn's song. Loosing her body hadn't stopped the music; Its absence was worrying.

I felt a kiss on my cheek. Surprised as I was, my mind didn't catch up with the situation until I heard a familiar faint giggling from my right.

"My lost Love." The woman with the strange teeth, who was somehow the very wind that destroyed my city, grabbed hold of my hands. "We have much longer to play now. Won't you join me?"

She dragged me along with her before I could answer. I doubted she'd accept a 'no' anyway. She skipped along backwards through the ruined building, dragging me along and never letting go of my hands. Occasionally she would spin us about in some deranged dance. Other times, she would press up against me as if we were about to Tango. It was disconcerting the way she would invade my personal space, and yet it was the closest thing to a hug I'd had in months. It was in a word, conflicting.

"Where's Sorrowful Hymn of Youthful Indiscretion?" I asked as I was swept up in her enthusiasm, and more literally her winds. My words sounded drowned out, muffled by the strong, yet soundless, swirling breeze.

"Quiet." She barked, all while maintaining her same quiet whisper. The sudden change from joy to anger and back again sent chills down my spine. "Your coadjutor was not invited. This time is for us."

I decided to stop talking, if only to avoid seeing that terrifying rage on her beautiful face once more. It was surprisingly easy to placate the madwoman, as I had no choice but to follow along in her wake as we danced through the rubble.

"I was so fond of the last you. He was so handsome and full of life. It was such a shame when he was killed." She had a wistful expression on her face as she reminisced on who I guessed was Reckless Prophet of Change. "I wanted to flense the skin from his bones myself. The dirty tease."

My face fixed in to a placid mask to avoid setting off my insane dance partner. Meanwhile, I screamed inside.

"Now, now, Dear Sister." A smarmy voice spoke up, halting Adorjan in her tracks and consequently giving me whiplash. I did not like the way her eyes narrowed. "Surely you don't want to break your new toy before she's even had a chance to make a name for herself?"

Her head whipped down and stared a little past my feet. As my eyes followed the movement, I noticed my shadow was moving in a sinuous manner. I most definitely was not.

"You!" Adorjan all but yelled. "How did you survive?"

"Survive is a generous description Dear Sister. I am but a shadow of my former self." He paused, I would have groaned if I wasn't afraid for my life. "I won't ask you to forgive the pun. You never do."

I suddenly found my hands free as Adorjan dove at my shadow. She missed.

"Tut tut. Such aggression." The voice spoke, this time from Adorjan's own shadow, which had taken to moving counter the woman's own movements. "Is that anyway to greet your brother?"

"How did you get here Ebon Dragon?" She snarled as she tried to stomp on her own shadow. I meanwhile was doing my best to remain unobtrusive to this family feud.

"Oh Adorjan. You should know better than any that I am no longer He." This time, the voice came from a patch of darkness cast by a mostly intact pillar. I could make out some serpentine aspects the leading edge of the inky blackness. "Or should I call you Adrián?"

A flurry of wind saw the pillar torn apart, but to no avail as the voice laughed from the sliver of shade provided by a collapsed girder. "No, you saw my old Fetich die, just as I heard the passing of Lilike. The Ebon Dragon died as he lived, via betrayal. Instead, I am now but a Cheerful Witness of Suffering."

Everything was silent for a moment, before it was broken by demented giggling from the terrifying, space-invading lady. I let out my own nervous giggle as the shadow joined in, even if I was missing whatever the joke was. Frankly I was in way over my head. Then as abruptly as it came, the laughter ended.

"Forgive me for thinking it just another of your ruses, Brother." She smiled once more, in that manic fashion I had first seen her wear. "A fitting end to your great plots of backstabbing and escape. But a bit of advice before I leave my darling Scourge to rest. Never return. If you do, you will join the Neverborn, as none of the others will be as accepting as I."

She turned to me and pressed herself against me once more. With one arm wrapped around my waist, she ran her fingers through my hair and whispered even quieter than usual. "Never trust a Dragon."

I shuddered as the breath tickled my ear, before she dissipated into a scarlet zephyr that joined the rest of the hurricane.

"Good advice that. Luckily, I'm not a Dragon. As such." My shadow said. Or was it Cheerful Witness of Suffering. I could practically hear it reverberating with proper noun status. It was also weird enough to be a name for one of these Yozi creatures. "Now be a good little Infernal and do try to be entertaining for me."

"Define entertaining."

"Oh, I'm sure you'll come up with something. You did mean to do something about those gangs right?"

"You want me to be a hero?" I stared down with a raised eyebrow. He, or at least his former self didn't exactly sound like a good person-place-thing... Actually he didn't sound any better now really. "With a name like yours?"

"Okay, so He Who Laughs at Misfortune is somewhat misleading. Just because I laugh at it, doesn't mean I cause it. What do you take me for, a monster?"

"Yes." It was pretty obvious after all.

"I am wounded." My shadow clutched its chest in mock pain.

"I'm sure." I rolled my eyes. "So what was that Cheerful Witness of Suffering bit if not your name? It is basically the same thing."

"Oh just a bit of an in joke between siblings. It is the name of the sub-soul that became my new Fetich. But back to your earlier question. Sure. Be a hero. Why not. I don't care as long as it is interesting."

"Wonderful." I sighed. "So you're a voyeur."

"I prefer the term proactive schadenfreude enthusiast."

"So an Internet Troll?"

"Nothing so gauche, though the Internet is a most fascinating place now that I have discovered how to observe it. There hasn't been such a pointlessly amusing pastime since the Games of Divinity."

"The what?"

"Never mind that. Your alarm is about to go off."

"How do you know that?"

"Because BEEP BEE-"

*-P BEEP BEEP*

I sat up in the unfamiliar bed and my hair lashed out at the annoying appliance. A loud crunching noise followed soon after.

*BEEEEEEEEEp*

Just what I needed this morning, awkward apologies for breaking an alarm clock.

*Edited out colour text because it was clashing with too many themes.*

....ok I can't help but like this version of the Ebon Dragon. He has class like those old time villains. Sure they will kill you but they are at least nice while doing it.

The one thing that first struck me was Adorjan threatening to permakill CWoS and turning him into a Neverborn. Neither the primordials nor Green Sun Princess possess the ability to permanently kill those possessing primordial-level immortality, so thats an utter impossibility. To quote the infernal book: "Yozi Charms can't kill their own kind past fetich death. Only the Chosen of the gods are so monstrous.".

Beyond that, one thing that I do kinda wonder is where everyone is? I mean is Adorjan still trapped in Malfeas, and yet still able to reach Taylor? Though I think she did have some dream charm (or was that ES homebrew?). I do think it should be explained why Adorjan is so interested in Taylor though? I mean she does still have 9 other GSPs, and all of them presumably far more powerfull.

Poor Taylor. You should really be doing your best to make Adorjan hate you while you still have the chance. :)

Also, where exactly is CWoS and his subsouls? He would arguably be the most powerfull being on the planet. Scion might give him competition, but even thats not really certain.

Adorjan didn't threaten the dragon with killing him by himself, just that others would do it.

The GSP can invent new charms for the Yozi and it is not out of the question to invent a GET equivalent upgrade.

I seriously doubt the Yozi would allow a Solar to GET the new guy. They are terrified of permadeath. This is especially true since the guy that betrayed them was TED, and TED is already mostly dead and gone. They might torment him to some degree simply to vent their anger, but theres a big difference between doing that, and calling a Solar/Abyssal to deal the final blow required.

The GSP can invent new charms for the Yozi and it is not out of the question to invent a GET equivalent upgrade.

Eh, maybe. Would probably depend on the author/storyteller. Personally I would argue that its simply not normally possible, since the GSP do draw their power from Primordial charms/power, and they are explicitly unable to do this.

I could perhaps see somekind of heretical charm being capable of doing it perhaps, since those draw and combine things from multiple Yozi, and could be said to transcend whats normally possible for the Yozi (GSP do have the potential to go Primordial 2.0 afterall). However I also suspect that a GSP that invented a heretical charm capable of permakilling Primordials would be a dead GSP very quickly if discovered.

Indeed. Here you are.

Tiger Devours Impotent Cubs

: -; Mins: Essence 6; Type: Permanent
Keywords: Heretical
Duration: Permanent
Prerequisite Charms: Triumphant Howl of the Devil Tiger

The Devil-Tiger has proclaimed his legend for all to hear. The Primordials of old are lesser; weaker than he. They are the worthless vestiges of a failed prototype species whose sole purpose was the manufacturing of a new, perfect form of life. As that perfect being, all others are unnecessary beneath your gaze. They are not fit to live in this world - in your world.

Spirits slain by the Infernal do not disperse and reform. They merely lay as a carcass at the Infernal's feet. They cannot speak nor take actions, though they can see and hear. As a miscellaneous action, the Infernal may gesture over the corpse, and give mercy to the fallen, allowing the spirit to reform as it normally would - although they gain an intimacy of fear towards the Infernal as they know all too well what might have happened.

Alternatively, and more likely, the Infernal may feast upon the spirit-flesh of the creature, killing it utterly, and robbing it of its ability to return to life while also restoring (Infernal's Essence x 2) of the Infernal's motes. Spirits so killed become intertwined with the Devil-Tiger's legend; not an important passage by any means, but rather a footnote proclaiming his savage glory, and the assertion of his dominance over so pitiful a being. Those that view the Infernal with Essence Sight see, trailing behind him, a list of his victims, their last words, and the demises they suffered.

A second purchase allows the Infernal to attain even further sustenance from his spiritual meals. When he devours a spirit carcass, he may roll his (Essence + Willpower), gleaning one piece of useful information per success rolled that the spirit would have known in the form of memories and experiences integrated into the Infernal's own mind and soul. The Infernal may choose specific memories he would like to go for (such as "The happiest moment in the spirit's life."), or simply general guidelines ("Stuff involving martial arts."). If no guidelines are given, then particularly vivid memories involving the spirit's intimacies appear first and foremost.

If the Devil-Tiger integrates at least (Spirit's Essence) memories into himself, then the essential network of the universe becomes confused, mistaking the subsumed lines in the Infernal's legend for the spirit in question. When an effect would discern the specific identity of an individual, the Infernal may choose to be considered one such integrated spirit (though he does not stop being considered himself).

For example, a manse designed to read the Essence signature of "Nara-O" and open only for them, would recognize the Infernal as Nara-O after they have feasted on that spirit. A binding spiritual oath to "Serve Ahlat" would be just as binding to an Infernal that has integrated Ahlat with himself.

The Infernal can always choose to just not be considered a particular spirit if he does not wish to be.

Titanic Resorption Imposition

: -; Mins: Essence 6; Type: Permanent
Keywords: Heretical
Duration: Permanent
Prerequisite Charms: The Flame of the Rising Phoenix, Tiger Devours Impotent Cubs (x2)

The perfection that is the Devil-Tiger was birthed from the union of two Primordials. Low and pathetic as they are, they served a valuable purpose, providing the building blocks to something greater. Still, that does not afford them mercy - just as a feeble twin is devoured in the womb to feed the stronger child in his preparation for life, so too is it the place of the fallen titans to be food for the Tiger.

When the Infernal devours the carcass of a Primordial's fetich or jouten via Tiger Devours Impotent Cubs, for which he utilized a charm of as a prerequisite for Triumphant Howl of the Devil-Tiger, he consumes so much more than a fleeting name. As the vast motonic substrata of the Primordial explodes and swirls around the Infernal, formless in the purest expression of itself, it is denied both a reconstitution into a new form, and the eternal nightmare of the Neverborn. Instead, it is consumed wholesale by the Heretical Exaltation.

Firstly, the Infernal's mind, soul, and very being are warped and twisted by the influx of power. They attain the full knowledge of the consumed Primordial's likely eon-spanning memory as it mixes with their own. Their Excellency, Devil-Tiger Charm Set, Caste, physical appearance, and personality incorporate at least one aspect of the fallen titan if they did not sufficiently already. The tale of the Primordial is overlaid with the Devil-Tiger, and though the Infernal likely appears as a mere man, the universe has trouble distinguishing the two in the same way as spirits that have been integrated perfectly with the second purchase of "Tiger Devours Impotent Cubs".

Were a fellow Yozi to lay eyes upon a Devil-Tiger that has consumed Malfeas, for instance, they would not only see the Infernal, but their king as well - and not just their bleeding, wretched, shattered king, but a new king; an ascended, glorious being all wrath and wonder and worship. Oaths made to that king would still bind, should the Tiger choose it.

Secondly, the Devil-Tiger loses all charms that he knew from the consumed Primordial's charm tree, converting them into experience which he may only use to purchase charms from his own unique charm tree - preferably charms that incorporate aspects and themes from the Primordial in question. If that Primordial was Favored for him, it loses that distinction, and a new Favored Primordial may be reflexively chosen at a later date.

Prerequisite Charms: Tiger Devours Impotent Cubs (x2), Spirit of the Living World

While the final, perfect product of the Devil Tiger is undeniably existent for all the world to see, as one unified work of magnificence, it may amuse him to look back upon the words and volumes that compose the whole.

Upon taking this charm, a Memetic Simulacrum appears in the Infernal's inner world; one for each spirit he has consumed with Tiger Devours Impotent Cubs. It has no statistics, nor charms - it is a mere consciousness, with an illusory body appearing identical to the one which they had in life, composed of what information the Devil Tiger knew about them, as well as what memories of their own that he integrated with himself. So, too, does there exist a memory-construct of the Infernal's mortal self, prior to their Second Breath - the foundation of what would come.

The constructs may be spoken to, and will respond in kind, as closely as they are able, given the information contained within them. It is possible that such beings retain the solipsistic string of consciousness that inhabited their old form, as if their journey from the outside world into the Infernal's stomach were a nightly slumber from which they emerged with incomplete memories. It is, however, unlikely.

If the Infernal has consumed a Primordial with Titanic Resorption Imposition, the Primordial so represented also supplies Memetic Simulacra of their Third Circle and Second Circle souls, although it is unlikely that any First Circle souls stick out in their memory vividly enough to count. Because the catalog of their memory is so perfect, these Simulacra may even tutor beings that can appear in the Infernal's inner world so far as their own Primordial or Spirit charms are concerned. The Infernal has no particular way of controlling the behavior of Memetic Simulacra, so such cooperation is not guaranteed.

A bit overpowered but yeah, thats the basic idea. I would not necessarily even require the full devil-tiger thing. I mean TED is gone in this story, but you could for example say that Ebon Dragons Ultimate Darkness Internalization (become a creature of death connected to Oblivion. Oblivion that came into existence when the first Primordials died) + Malfeas Radiant Fury Dissolution (spirit killer charm of the Primordial that somewhat remembers death due to Ruvelias death, but was not totally reset due to Ligier) and maybe Demon-Wracking Shout (if you wanted to make it higher essence) could create a heretical GET equivalent without going full devil-tiger, which is tough to get due to E6 requirement.

Generally you could homebrew charms that were Yozi only and not heretical for most things so long as it was not too distorted from the theme, so I figure Heretical charms should be for things that seem otherwise forbidden for GSPs, but still sorta solaroid shard themed. Like for example I believe Earthscorpion has a heretical charm for summoning elementals (normally impossible for GSPs). I would also be cool with a heretical charm that somehow gave GSP ability to use sidereal MA (not that they really need it and I am sure there is one somewhere, but you get the idea). And so on.

Though this is getting a bit off-topic. My main point was that given that the Yozi are understandably pretty freaked out about the whole "I CAN DIE!?!" thing, and given that TED already underwent fetich death and is not really TED anymore, and given the improbability of finding a primordial-level spirit killer, Adorjans threat did not really seem to fit. Would actually have made more sense if Adorjan had threatened to redo the fetich death repeatedly until she got a TED-incarnation that was willing to stay away or something.

I'm neutral on her joining the Wards, but you'd better start letting go of that hope (har) because the PRT are unusually well-developed and that probably isn't going to be thrown away.

Its also worth remembering that an Adorjan GSP that has actually started embracing her teaching due to the whole near suicide thing would probably make a rather unique ward experience.

Shadow Stalker: "Why the fuck did you kill that guy! We were supposed to capture him!"
Taylor: "Can't blame me! I was hungry!"
Shadow Stalker: "Hungry? Are you insane! Shit, the others will be here in just a few moments! What are we supposed to do with the body!"
Taylor: "Chill Sophia. You should learn to let these things go. Now just relax, and let me take a deep breath."

Adorjan has charm where killing people satiates physical hunger. And another where she can inhale corpses.

A Lot less "not change much" and more along the lines of "Not loose power".

The New TED is just as powerful as the old TED but with altered themes, personality etc. Hence less Dick Dastardly and more Affably Evil.

What I am unsure about is how that affects GSPs?

I mean lets say the new TEDs charmset no longer has Loom-Snarling Deception (for example). Could Taylor still get it, even if the Yozi who it originates from no longer has it?

Likewise, if new TED has new charms that fit his new personality, like say voyeur-like charms to observe things remotely or thinker charms to learn everything about people the new TED is stalking observing (similar to say Tattletale), would GSPs automatically gain access to those, or would the new TED have to open up his charmset anew due to being reset by fetich death?

Am I the only one hearing Bill Cipher's voice?
Yes, if only because I had never watched Gravity Falls before googling that name. :p
May have to watch it after all.

*Cough* Messy Divorce *cough*

I figure as she is a Scourge, she shares some connection to Adorjan that allows communication regardless of metaphysical distance (otherwise access to charms would be iffy), this may also allow others if Adorjan feels like sharing. I am undecided whether I'll have Malfeas/Ligier visit at some point give his status as her other Patron.

As for interest, that will be elaborated. But how many of those other 9 are in a different world that has never been touched by Adorjan's gentle caress?

He Who Laughs at Misfortune and his few remaining sub-souls are around. They may even be... doing things.

What I am unsure about is how that affects GSPs?

Taylor will not get any TED charms.
Other things, well, you'll have to wait and see.

Taylor will not get any TED charms.

Of course not. Those Charms don't exist anymore. Nor do Adrian's Charms, or those of The Lidless Eye That Sees, or He Who Bleeds The Unknown Word, or those of any other Primordial who underwent fetich death. Malfeas is the only exception, because Theion had two fetiches instead of one; Malfeas still has the Charms that would allow him to have two fetiches (A Prince For The Queen and Two Hearts As One), but is too wounded to make use of them.

I don't think one Yozi can borrow anothers like that. Also truthfully, I am kinda hoping that the Yozi won't take over the story like that. HWLM for example should basically be extremely powerfull. As was pointed above, existence of GSP means no power loss. I dunno how many 3rd circles TED had, but lets go to absolute minimum and say 8 (sickly and dying Autochton has 8, so HWLM probably has more than twice that, but lets go with absolute minimum).

Thats still 8 Eidolon level immortal beings. Each also has 7 2nd circles, who are very powerfull beings, so thats 56 highlevel Brute/Trump/Blasters. And each of those is capable of spawning entire species of 1st circles and creating vast armies of anykind of demon they desire. And that is ofcourse ignoring whatever powerfull Jouten form(s) HWLM has. Granted I dunno how this all works, so I guess they could still be trapped in Malfeas or Creation?

However if they are here, then, if none of those subsouls carve kingdoms for themselves, it kinda makes one wonder why not? Even if HWLM overall is basically only interested in watching, he has subsouls who almost certainly arent.

Also, having Adorjan appear constantly could likely make her appearances tiresome (familiary breeds contempt), and if Ligier wants to appear, he should damn well find a way for Taylor to learn 3rd circle sorcery and get properly summoned, rather than somehow "borrow" Adorjans charms. :)

Ultimately, I kinda worry that if Adorjan and HWLM and even Malfeas/Ligier (somehow!??) get constantly involved too much, Taylor is basically going to end up mostly meaningless, since a total newbie exalt is insignificant in comparison to primordials and 3rd circles. And I would rather read about Taylors adventures (though thats just me.)

One would also think the Yozi would be rather distracted with events happening in Creation (TED did escape, at the very least proving that it IS possible. World is wrecked. UCQ might be dead and a new one might have taken up the job (and not be addicted to crack). The seal of 8 divinities is open and and alchemical exalted are running all over the place. Auto might even be in be awaking. Etc.

I can sorta see Adorjan occasionally paying attention to Taylor, but Malfeas&Ligier should have no business caring about some newbie GSP somewhere, when Creation basically turned upside down very recently.

My point was that they might be recorded in the GSP exaltation shards. TED is unique in that he fetich died AFTER the existence of GSPs.

Actually, nevermind. Turns out thats not the case according to the corebook atleast:

Much as they might wish otherwise, the Yozis can't take back the power they bestow. The use of a Yozi's Charms in no way depends on the cooperation of that being, though fetich death radically transforms and replaces their Charms with more appropriate effects for most wielders. The Principle of Hierarchy has definitively calculated that Green Sun Prince Exaltations would preserve a dead Yozi's Charms intact, warding that titan from suffering final death as a Neverborn or suffering net power loss as a result of fetich death so long as a single Green Sun Prince lives to preserve the seed of her former self. True death into a Neverborn would certainly have catastrophic implications on a slain titan's Charms that the Yozis do not understand or want to discover. Yozis are permanently immune to harm from their own Charms, but they can and do hurt one another. However, Yozi Charms can't kill their own kind past fetich death. Only the Chosen of the gods are so monstrous.

Going by author intent expressed on the old White Wolf Forums (and hence uncheckable, because they went down years ago and weren't properly backed up), despite SWLiHN's hopes, an infernal won't protect a Yozi from death, though once a charmset has been opened to the Infernals that version of the charmset will forever be open, and an Infernal could potential become another, for instance, Ebon Dragon by taking the Ebon Dragon's version of the "I am" charm.

Edit: specifically -

The first part is right, the second wrong.

Let us just say in regards to the warning, that things have gotten rather messy / interesting in Creation/Malfeas.

As for sub souls and empires, things will be revealed as the story progresses. There are assumptions being made that might skew one's expectations. Suffice to say that Adorjan is not going to be present physically, and won't visit every dream for the very reasons you've stated. The story will be focusing on Taylor, as while there may be powerful beings about, the world is a big and fascinating place beyond Brockton Bay..

Taylor X Ligier OTP as stated in @Thief of Words 's quest.

Edit: To actually add something. To have Ligier actually put forth all that effort to communicate with Taylor, he's probably hoping this new world can be a way around the Surrender-Oaths. And I would guess that it's probably going to be her Urge if Ligier directs her to do so directly.

Have we actually discussed what Hymn (sorry can't remember off hand) is gonna urge Taylor to do?
