Let's Play Every Final Fantasy Game In Order Of Release [Now Playing: Final Fantasy IX]

But, hrm.

If Dirge of Cerberus is the worst Star Wars, what's "Final Fantasy 7: The First SOLDIER"?

Vagrant Story isn't a Final Fantasy though. It doesn't pass the ultimate "Is this a Final Fantasy?" test: it doesn't have Final Fantasy in the title.
Vagrant Story also, more significantly, has nothing in common with Final Fantasy - the magic and monsters have different names, the gameplay is structured very differently, the tone and themes of the story are unlike any seen in any actual Final Fantasy, and the setting is different in any conceivable manner. If the game wasn't produced by Square staff that had worked on some Final Fantasy titles before, nobody would even think to draw any connection between it and Final Fantasy; it has more in common with Dark Soul (of which is likely one of the inspirations) than it does with any Final Fantasy title, even the more modern ones.

No, Crystal Star is much worse than the Jedi Prince series. It's actually a strong contender for the worst piece of fiction I've ever read.

You're probably right. I honestly just wanted an excuse to talk about Trioculous. Now let us commence the Mofference with this nice meal of Whaledon meat as we enjoy a reading from the Book of Dark Side Lore. I sure hope that Princess Leia, who is real and definitely NOT a secret robot doesn't decide to assassinate anyone with her laser eyes that she definitely *doesn't* have.

To make matters worse it even takes place in the same setting as a previous Final Fantasy game
Does it? Because, within the text of the game itself, I was unable to find any proof of this. Now, the developers might have said otherwise, but George Lucas also said that he had a whole trilogy planned before he wrote Star Wars after the film was a massive success, despite that being untrue, so I am not inclined to trust developers comments over what is in the actual game being discussed.

This might be me getting some stuff confused and misremembering some things.
I thought it was stated somewhere that the game took place in the distant future of Ivalice but a quick googling doesn't confirm anything so that might just be me getting some stuff mixed up

According to Wikipedia, Matsuno has gone back and forth on whether Vagrant Story is an Ivalice title or the references are just Easter eggs.

If I remember right, wasn't Vagrant Story created first, and FF Tactics was created as a distant maybe-prequel later on (with FFXII then later being created as a prequel to that)?

So even if it was fully intended for all of them to take place in the same setting, it makes sense that Vagrant Story wouldn't have much in the way of direct references with it being originally a standalone game.

Final Fantasy Tactics was released in 1997, Vagrant Story in 2000; Tactics was already out before any development on Vagrant Story started.

Oh huh! I could've sworn Vagrant Story came first.

Well in that case yeah, seems like it's just a case of being inconsistent whether or not it's a sequel.
