Last Light of a Dark Age (Warhammer 29K/Disco Elysium)

I'm new to this quest, but if I understand it this version of BigE is a DAOT superweapon right?
There are theories. One of mine is that all the theories are at least partially true because if he becomes a god, I am of the opinion he was at least a minor god during the great crusade, then retroactively all the legends become part of his legend in a manner similar to the prime souls. That perpetual who was at the Tower of Bable? Him. That DAOT weapon that went rogue? Him. That being born of all the shamens' deaths? Him. It's the winner who takes it all, the losers take the fall, fools play by the rules, and the gods may throw the dice.

[X] RHYTHMS. The tempo, in the planet's noise. Harmony with artifice.

Now that we know that the Voice In The Noise that Rhythms allows us to hear is very likely a piece of The Mother I can't not vote for the option that I think could most allow us the possibility to interact with her and I kinda also want to keep D5h as a part of Harmony's mindscape which I think Rhythms has the best chance of doing

It also seems relevant then that The Mother seems to have had prior experience with the White Sun which might also explain why D5h seems to speak about her in a familiar tone

the Mother is legendarily have said to have fought the White Sun

It's also very fun that her name is Sophia given the importance of that name within IRL Gnosticism and after i read that my Though Pattern was just: The Voice In The Noise = S.O.P.H.I.A = The Mother = Must Know More

Year zero, reaching into the primordial past to force it to conform. Psychomythical transmutation. Every hero, every legend, every psychohistorical myth, had been rewritten. Overwritten.

While I was reading Chapter 11: Red Sun, I had the idea that it could be possible that the King In Yellow/GEoM has or will do something similar to Koinon's National God-Birth for themselves but for the entire species instead, as the retroactive rewriting of cultural and historical memory seems like something that the Emperor would be very into and would fit in with the Imperium's whole thing as the stifling of all identity and alternative beliefs/possibilities. Though I unfortunately don't know much about most of the mythologies mentioned.
A king in yellow.

He hatches in Agartha, under the towers behind the moon. Its sacred shell that would shield the world - cracks, yellow.

He rises up to Shamballa, and the pure spring where newborn Kalki would first quench his thirst - runs yellow.

He is in Tian, in the court of jade-jeweled majesty, but the halls are empty, and the jade - glows yellow.

He seals the gates of moksha shut forever with cruel-wrought ropes and chains - of yellow.

The leaves of good gan eden, where walked the first and were meant to walk the last of man - curl yellow.

He brings down the spheres of Paradiso, and heaven's sphere-carved craters - gleam yellow.

The levels of divine pleasure, where the faithful should reside, drown - in yellow.

The cross of passion's lord is empty, and where his body hanged are stains - of yellow.

All fall, before the king in yellow. There is none left, but the king in yellow. But who is he? There was a stranger with a pallid mask, and a king. The man rises upwards to the tatters of the king - and then is born the king in yellow.

Been looking at all the Icons and whether we know anything about them. I don't think the Progeny calendar and the Monadic calendar are the same though so I can't map out each month their associated with exactly.
NOOSPHERE [Trivial - Success]: Knowledge - Icon Dakar, of the Skywatch.
...

COGITATION [Trivial - Success]: Logic - Icon Morow, of Cybaris.
...

BIOMECHANICS [Trivial - Success]: Life - Icon Remari, of the Progeny.
INFOWAR [Trivial - Success]: Freedom - without an icon, since Winterine's death, and the fall of Carnosa.
RHYTHMS [Trivial - Success]: Music - Icon Luricanti, of the Chrome Kings.
LIVING WEAPON [Trivial - Success]: Victory - Icon Bellamona, of Origen.
Dakar went on a spiritual journey through the galaxy and turned a Greater Daemon into delicious cubes. Oh and organized the Skywatch.
Morow fused with an AI and was instated as an Icon as what seems like a concession by Monad for someone they couldn't get rid of. The original Kora said he was a tycoon sim and Holt was going the Yes Man route so I assume he's Mr. House hooked up to Open TTD. Oh and also his name is Tom Morow which definitely isn't concerning in regards to the LETHE revelations. Also goes by Mr. Morow I wonder if he was Monadic monk beforehand?

Rip Remari inextricably linked with a state that didn't exist while you lived and that you would've hated. Gained her status by freeing slaves and helping enable slaves to free themselves. Was a pacifist and was martyred. Saved and taught Kora who did the very normal thing of taking on her exact appearance.
Genuinely rather sad about this one but we do know quite a bit about Winterine and Carnosa. Probably no reason to reinstate them when you could dangle the open slot in front of everyone.
Luricanti converted the Chrome Kings to Gnosis presumably via sick as fuck concerts considering he's the Icon of Music. The last of the Icons to be instated too.

Bellamona beat the shit out of the sinister shapes hard enough that we know there's a cube city in the Dreamspace (the Still Coast also said this but they're heathens so who cares what they have to say). Seems to be the originator of that sick ass "the young eat the old" quote.
SACRED GEOMETRY [Trivial - Success]: Creation - Icon Ukles, of the Emmonites.
...

INCANDESCENCE [Trivial - Success]: Justice - Icon Dikasyne, of Koinon.
INTERLACE [Trivial - Success]: Peace - Icon Mohina, of Tetras.
RELIQUARY [Trivial - Success]: Memorial - Icon Aberqasem, of Titanagalbat.
...

MOTION BLUR [Trivial - Success]: Movement - Icon Marathar, of Mozel.
GLAMOUR [Trivial - Success]: And style - Icon Moriani, of Origen.
Don't know anything about these so just throwing so speculation out there. Eleusia was the Hero of Blind Justice and the Koinon Icon Dikasyne is Icon of Justice. The Tetrasi are all about peace and love even while they're at war so Mohina makes sense even though we don't know the details. The others I'm curious about especially how stylish you have to be to be made an Icon of it.

One of the few things we know relatively for sure about the Emperor is that he both did not plan/did not want to be a god and kinda hated being the Emperor. This is stated repeatedly from a variety of sources old and new with some of them actually in on the Emperor's plans like Malcador's internal narration and words. The "Emperor wants to/is aiming to become a god" stuff was the lie fed to Horus and that he essentially ends up becoming not just a deity but one of the worst possible deities stuck in an eternal agonizing martyrdom is part of the Emperor's ironic hell. So I really doubt he accidentally became a god during the Great Crusade even if he was building up steam/warp mojo, especially since even the demi-godhood of the prime souls took a lot of deliberate buildup and ritualistic steps.

Of course this invites a lot of questions about why he operated the way he did both IC from those in a position to do so and OOC for the readers. One motivation which pops up in text is a need for speed and some form of stability in the chaos caused by the fall of Old Night and given that Illuminata is just a major example of how fucked up things can be I can sympathize with that. Shit's fucked on a galactic scale and atm he and Malcador are going through the Unification Wars which highlight just the kinds of horrors that will end up being slain by the Great Crusade or locked beneath the Imperial Palace.

gen has been unusually resistant against the dreamshape's infiltration, delaying it's hatching by a good decade.

This means that if there was a mass deployement, for the majority of people, the hatching occured years ago. And given that such a thing would have likely had major societal effects, some of the implants or thoughtforms should have had memory of it. So, either that too got filtered out, every staple has been doing the dream resistance thing, or the shape has filtered itself out of memory.
Or Harmony/Miss Normal was singled out because she's a Monadic agent and most of the staples are, in fact, benign.

Yeah, I don't buy that LETHE itself is fully subverted, and definitely don't buy that it's mass-converting its populace. A big group performing mass reprogramming of highly capable, PTSD-ridden war veterans? The gnosis-FBI (Monadic agents) would have to be absolutely asleep at the wheel to not be scrutinizing it closely, and we know they're out and doing their jobs. The 'bedbugs' have been actively keeping the Geometers and Hydra at bay for a thousand years, which implies a good level of baseline competence. If it were that easy, the planet would already be a trapezoid.

A corroborating bit is D5h's behavior itself: our parasite is self-confident, but not broadly so. It's taking great care to integrate seamlessly into broader Illuminatan society, preserving Miss Normal's outward facade, and makes no mention of joining a broader group or infiltrator network. If LETHE had been mass-converting its patients, we'd be in a They Live sort of situation, but D5h is acting instead like it's in a John le Carre novel.

Similarly, let's not forget that 'corporation' on Illuminata shouldn't be taken at face value. This is an entire society built up from the ashes of what we know, and its mirror of organic humanity is...let's call it 'somewhat skewed.' This is not to say that the Morow-fork running LETHE is somehow immune to corruption, as evidenced by the Dreamscape interrupt back in the 'Red Sun' chapter. However, we shouldn't assume that LETHE is post-postmodern private equity willing to sell out the planet for a slightly better quarterly return, lol

The LETHE Corporation is certainly suborned, but I suspect it's at the individual project level (the whole 'hylic treatment' program) rather than completely through and through. The gnosis-FBI would certainly perform pneumatic-run checkups on LETHE's patients, looking for dreamscape or Hydra infiltration, but hylics treated using some weird-ass experimental therapy? 'A dreamshape infiltration using recently-developed Nurglite poison to bypass a hylic's psychic protections' is an awfully niche little trick, and a forgiveable oversight for the denizens of Origen Station.

At the same time, there's nothing stopping a suborned R&D head or the like from subverting other hylics, so we shouldn't assume that we're the only Trojan Horse out there. If the dreamshapes use their new agents to make runs on Dis like D5h is doing with us, they won't leave behind much incriminating evidence either. Thank you, Noosphere, for blowing such a key actor wide open.

There's always the possibility that Monad have managed to get themselves subverted, allowing LETHE to get away with the total cultural annihilation of Illuminata for their esoteric ends. There's a danger (an an exciting tension!) to secret societies: They're particularly vulnerable to being collapsed from within without anyone from the outside ever knowing about it. Secrecy is a shield and a dangerous blindspot.

Of course, if that were the case, then we're falling back to the problem you've identified: Dreamscape would, almost certainly, have already used this power to "win" Illuminata. There would be no point in focusing on Harmony in particular. It's possible that her subversion is a first- or second-step of a multi-step process to begin the task of subsuming Monad, but... I'm not so sure. While she's a apparently a famous Monk, and presumably of high rank and standing, the structure of Monad seems decentralized enough that kill-and-replacing any one Agent or cell of Agents runs the danger of getting you jumped by the remaining dozens of cells that are capable of checking in on you and have the tools to know you're acting suspiciously geometrical.

Err---but that's mostly a guess. We know very little about how Monad operates, but I'd be surprised if they had a top-heavy organization that's vulnerable to this kind of subversion. It'll be very hard to understand the Shape's motives until we know more about the international situation postwar.

Reading over the update again and the shape makes no mention of Sympathy's memories as far as I can tell. If it could see them you'd think it'd comment on it so I have to assume it can't.

INFOWAR [Medium - Success]: We're good, boss. From what little you know of dreamspace and the hydra, we'd be in a much worse state than having to retread through memories if you were somehow possessed, as a blank. Our bones would all be gone, for one.

BIOMECHANICS [Trivial - Success]: Our bones remain intact. All is well.

INFOWAR [AUTOFAIL]: We can conclude for sure: the warp was not involved.
🤔

Well, guess we know now the source of those failures! INFOWAR a false success, or at least one that managed with faulty info.

Also, has anyone else noticed the symbol for the white sun looks awfully like the Eye of Providence?

No, Infowar is right.

You aren't possessed by a Dreamshape - Gen is.

Oh hey new diceroller update, you can now roll without needing to edit the post and insert it directly. Let's celebrate by a very normal rhythms roll. RHYTHMS [CHALLENGING - 12]. Roll a 2d6 as always. First poster to roll is taken.

Nah, you didn't pass. Don't worry though - rhythms roll fails just mean you hear a different tune than you were trying to :)

I'm calling it, the tune we will hear will be the Dirge of the Eater. Or at least something demiurge aligned.
Yeah, I can see it. I won't panic (much) because we were told not to vote for the attribute based on stats, but I won't be surprised if Harmony suddenly gets a deal-with-the-devil offer from the Demiurge to get her out of this situation.

<What about the Black Noise? Isn't that the old hyper-advanced planetary comms network?>
INFOWAR: Boss, the Black Noise is full of infohazards. Only the machines have secure lines of communication through it. Make too much of a racket in there and you stir up things better left un-stirred.
RHYTHMS: Wise is the one who does not waken them.
Harmony: I'm sorry I can't hear you over the cacophonous reverberation of the depth charge I just set off and the screams of the myriad hoard of horrors racing to dine upon and take up residence in my body and not soul. The risk I took was not calculated, I'm on an all suffering diet, I really hated my current tenant, and I am willing to do anything to survive. In my defense, It's what Kora would have done.

LEGACY FLESH: And glowing crimson in the rocket's red glare, a projection five-kilometers tall and wide appeared on the Cube's outer wall screen. Mr. Tomasin Morow, Cybaris Company's founder and owner. His sunny, mustachioed, suited, balding, and grandfatherly visage dwarfed the assembled crowd and even the elite of the gnostic parade. Some fainted from vertigo, at the unfathomable vastness of his projected form. To those who remained standing, He promised in an enthused and warm tone: this was only the beginning. Only a furtive glimpse of the wonders still to come. Only a figment compared to the dream of tomorrow.
And Mr. Morow, betraying Koinon, keeps his word not to follow - his third and final trick.

It was never his plan to win this war. He plays an entirely different game, by different rules.
EVENT HORIZON: Eighteen missiles continue to their targets. I'm sorry, little self. It was never the Dreamshapes' intent to save us. They are playing a different game.
I'm pretty sure that all of Cybaris is completely suborned, on a leadership level with likely shapes seeded through areas where they have broader control at key points. So it doesn't really matter how suborned at a project level LETHE is because their superiors are all on the Dreamshapes take. The only real question in my mind is whether Mr. Morrow's original human self was completely taken over/suborned by a pre-fall machine entity loyal to the Philosophers/Shapes or if he's just making a deal with the Shapes/offering loyalty so he can rule over any future incubator society of humans the shapes want when the dust settles. Given that Morrow was the one to detonate the peace talks I'd be entirely unsurprised if that Carnosan terrorist attack was caused by dreamspace proxies or suborned agents. With the previous secret alliance with Koinon being arranged specifically so that they'd be dragged into an unwinnable war and resort to creating the Prime Souls.

honestly nothing more disco elysium about this quest than the way he has us coming up with insane sounding conspiracy theories that are just plausible enough we can't dismiss them

Next update is being worked on. It is quite long (though not to worry, not Red Sun long haha) and has a lot of moving parts but I have gotten pretty far along so with hope it will be out in a few days.

In general I intend for a few more longer updates and then to shift to a shorter update size and schedule.

Thanks for keeping your ravenous reader base in the loop. In the interest of further tension, is the next chapter roll-heavy? Also, I have another song recommendation for Harmony. I think it has a certain thematic relevance.
