Not to trash talk gman...but I'm not feeling any of those. The way I was picturing our protagonist...she's a riverboat captain, and given her lowly birth she clawed her way up to that position from the bottom.

Not...ancient, but the vibe I'm getting is she's much closer to middle aged than young, and with a lot of those years spent doing rough work out of doors, she probably looks older than she is, maybe even has some grey in her hair.

Probably has a strapping set of shoulders on her as well, given that her weapon's a battle oar and she would have come up rowing, loading cargo, etc.

Basically....if I could find something like this

But a bit younger and a lot more Asian looking, that's how I've been imagining her.

@Wade Garrett I was mostly looking for something that could be a face mark or could conceal said face mark more than age.

[x] Calm down.
"In your place?" Think, what would you do?
Well, if you thought one of your crew was messing things up...you'd talk to him find out if you were right, if you were you'd kick him off your ship. Can't exactly do that as Emperor though.

"I would summon him to me to speak privately, and interrogate him with my own eyes and words. If I believed him innocent then, I would allow him to return to Zayko Toshi. If not, I would I find a reason to keep him in the capital, and send another to Zayko Toshi. If I was unsure, I would send him back but send one of my loyal subordinates to watch from afar and report back to me. Depending on that report my cousin would be removed or not."

@gman391
No worries, I'm just saying how I see it, and I get that "Middle aged female yakuza riverboat captain with red birthmark on face"...I'm digging through Google Images too and it's rough going to get anything even close.

C'mon L5R art people what is this even the female Hida Bush are 18 year old 80 pound supermodels get real! :p

I'd intended her to be a lot younger than that, even. Maybe not 17, but probably 25 or so.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to find good pictures of characters with birthmarks.

I've been looking for women with more of a yakuza-esque look to them and mentally adding the birthmark. Not perfect, I know, but it is what it is.

It's pretty much how I've been picturing her. :)

Pintrest has some stuff. Is this kinda what you were talking about?
Almost missed this since it was posted while I was writing. Yeah, this looks great too! ^_^

This makes no mention of any punishment if he was found to be guilty. I'm not familiar with the honour system in L5R, but it feels like sparing a criminal just because they were your relative might count as dishonourable behaviour, so I'm not sure that's something we should suggest to the emperor.

Perhaps there is a way for the emperor to avoid having to make such a choice? Reassign him somewhere that couldn't be harmed by any corrupt behaviour he might display, perhaps? Or maybe create a position in the city's government with even higher status and fill it with someone trustworthy so they could clamp down on any corruption that might exist, without technically reducing Genryu's status?

We're not. He said that he didn't want to kill his cousin.
So the course of action is proposed to be sufficiently ambiguous for kill or not kill
'Keep in him in the capital' can range from demoting him to paper boy. Or to imprisoning him, or to putting his ashes in an urn in the Imperial tomb after he commits seppukku. Similarly, 'remove him' is also helpfully ambiguous. My hope is that the Emperor a canny sort will read between the lines and see the following:
1. We are not particularly bloodthirsty about killing our own family.
2. We are also not willing to let family get in the way of good governance if we have to.
3. We trust his judgement on his cousin. We have hearsay, that's it, and while it's valid enough, we are ronin, our testimony should not, cannot trump his cousin's. That's just not how Rokugan works.
4. We are in no way telling him to kill his cousin outright, that's just rude.

At least that was my thought process going into this.

The easiest way for the Emperor to save face and not have a relative be publicly accused of corruption would be to send that relative to a monastery. It wouldn't be true justice though.

Alternately, you could try to preserve your Emperor's honor by encouraging him to do the right thing even though it is painful.

Reassignment to somewhere insignificant is probably the most lenient that the Emperor could possibly be.

Thing is
Status trumps in Rokugan

If Otomo Bigshot says he ain't corrupt, then we were clearly mistaken. Because we're a ronin pirate captain, and he's an Otomo Bigshot his word trumps ours. So saying as Empress we'd ask him if he was right, is yet another out if he wants it. It's all circles man...I need to go to sleep.

Thing is, our character's a half Scorpion ronin yakuza smuggler. It seems a bit out of left field for her to care about "true justice".

Now on the other hand...this Otomo obviously likes the finer things in life and the pleasures of the world in general (hence the taking bribes for everything) and I'd wager he's fairly fond of his status as Local Big Shot I'm The Emperor's Cousin, You Know.

And then you take all his material possessions away, you take all his status away, and you make him a bottom of the rung do these drudge labor chores as you seek inner peace neophyte in the Brotherhood of Shinsei...it may not be true justice, but it's definitely not a slap on the wrist, the problem is solved, and the appearance of honor on behalf of all involved is maintained.

Which feels appropriate for our character, after all, she makes a living because the Yasuki, Crane, and Scorpion all have things they really want to trade with one another but "Ewww! Trade with them? How dishonorable!" (And also "Ewww! Trade! How dishonorable!" for two of those three) so you employ a middle man and you know where it's going, the people who get it know where it came from, but you can say "What, me, trade with those Yasuki/Crane/Scorpion scum don't be absurd!" and be technically honest (the best kind of honest).

The fourth one you posted isn't too bad! I like the first one as well - I don't think it fits Tsubaki specifically, but it'd be a good fit for a descendent of yours once we get to some of the CKII segments.

[X] Get thee to a nunnery monastery.

I don't think direct anything suits the situation. Tsubaki seems the sort who just knows things, and all directly questioning a liar and thief gets you is an earful of their venom or pointless tears and confession of a thing you already knew. Killing family certainly feels out of character, but exile (of a sort), removal of everything they value and betrayed their trust for? Totally bloodless, but completely vindictive. Make it a monastery up in Dragon lands for good measure.

If she's a bit younger as well a less courtly approach with the political maneuvering makes sense, not to mention the low odds chance that the emperor actually follows through with this plan, the Otomo ends up passing muster and landing back in the city knowing now that someone set his cousin after him.

Okay then, that's two votes for monastery, and one vote for confronting his cousin directly. I'd like a few more votes / opinions before I get started writing the next chapter.
