[X] Plan For the Next Fight
Overall Im happy with this plan. Side note, you've put down "35 Fervour per turn" which is the added up cost of all the slotted moves used once. Thats not how the system works unless each one gets used exactly once per turn. Perfect Footing and Strandsense are both free, which is fine, Vanguard's Prayer and Prayer for Perseverance deduct 11 from our Fervour regen, which is what the previous 2? plans have mean when they put "11 per turn on Passives". The moves that we actually use some amount of times as attacks, defences, and in fight utility all cost Fervour each time we use them, and there are 4 attacks that will fire off each round from us, so one of your slotted attacks will fire a second time, and the other guy gets each of his attacks which cost 1 Fervour per attack to Clever Deflection. Overall, it means we don't know just how much Fervour will get used each turn. Just a note on how you appear to have mimicked the previous plan's formatting without understanding the details of why they were done like that. Actual plan is pretty good I'd say tho
I imagine Winfrid is going to turn out to be surprisingly adept in melee, given the first thing anyone who sees him will do is try to get in close, but Audrey is still really, really good at it.

[X] Plan For the Next Fight
-[X] Stance: Prayer For Perseverance, Perfect Footing, Vanguard's Prayer, Strandsense, Darting Strike, Clever Deflection, Faulty Ground, Giant Killing Blow
-[X] 35 Fervour per turn, 3 Zeal for the Boost to Rebuke
-[X] Tactics: Hordebreaker style and going to close the distance, using Perfect Footing to clear out any potential traps or environmental hazards, while deliberately using Faulty Ground to trip Tolstan up to force him to engage in melee while defending from his ranged attacks and charging towards him, while using Strandsense to keep an eye out for unexpected avenues of attack or entrapment, or attempts to break line of sight specifically. Upon reaching melee range, immediately go for the Giant Killing Blow to blow open his close quarters combat defenses, while using Faulty Ground to keep him from making distance immediately afterwards.
A hush fell over the landscape, as the two parties sized each other up, simulations of the clash ahead running through each of their minds as they waited for an unseen signal. At a third point on the triangle sat Margh Grouse, Knight of the Sun, who had declared his intention to cross swords with the victor.
On paper, both sides were of comparable strength. While the Eotenslaga party held two Squires in their ranks to the Tolstan's one–the explosive power of a skilled Thane was very much something to be concerned with given the short duration of the Melee's clashes. As far as most were concerned, two Squires were functionally able to neutralize one another in battle–which meant this was one Squire vs one of the finest Thanes of the generation, and then three Thanes vs two.
So it was that Mildred Schofield extracted something from the pouch at her side–a bright amethyst gemstone, sizzling with a pure light within. Clutched within her off-hand, she glanced between the two fighters she had claimed. A Squire and a Thane should be suicide, struggling to hold her own against that level of pressure. But few had truly grasped the potential of the Schofield Lineage–miners and prospectors all. What was a technique to buy a little time to survive in the depths should the walls cave in found new life in the hands of an aspiring Knight. What should have been a forgettable Thane turned into a promising youth–all because her Master saw potential in her that otherwise would have been missed.
Osric Eotenslaga stood before his foes, his Hama flexing as he prepared the ground. The Giant-Killing Blow would end his fight quickly, which was important because his friend just… He had no real business being here honestly, and should have been eliminated much earlier. There was a certain hierarchy among the fighters of the Anglo-Saxon people, where some lineages were better suited for the killing arts than others.
He was a farmer, a gardener–that his family was adjacent to the coast meant they needed to take up arms against the Danes more frequently, but he lacked any of the secret arts inherited by most of the older dynasties across the land. Diligence helps, but when training and time were equal, what won the day was inevitably inherited wisdom. He'd be no match against a proper fighter.
Osric considered his approach and eventually decided the way to go. A shockwave through the ground would force the enemy to jump, luring him into the invisible noose he was wrapping around the tree branch above. Immobilizing him long enough to go for his tendons, binding his movements by the time he broke out. Join the other engagement and strike with the Giant-Killing Blow from a dead angle, ending the fight promptly. He'd have only one likely shot left afterward before needing a bit of a lie-down, but it'd mostly be Cousin Audrey taking the lead for the final matchup anyway.
Simple enough of a plan, easily enough executed.
Audrey Eotenslaga matched the gaze of Winfrid Tolstan–master archer and terror of the northern woods. Favored by many as being a candidate to claim victory in the melee. Audrey never really liked that much though–it wasn't even anything wrong about him! She could sense the threat the faerie-blooded ranger emanated even now, greater than any she had assessed before.
But how few people placed faith in the rising Knights of Wessex? Why was it the only Squire favored to win being a foreigner bringing foreign treasure to win a contest?
This wouldn't do at all.
She had to teach the audience a lesson–that Audrey Eotenslaga and her peers were every bit the equal of the long-standing champions of Wessex! That their youth did not mean they were a flash in the pan!
This would be a wonderful opportunity to establish this truth.
The wind picked up, the leaves rustling, the fresh scent of upturned grass and wildflowers filling her nostrils.
THERE!
The world went mad, as nine youths unfurled their souls and clashed–with the bared grin of a tenth watching the proceedings from the prime seat.

Audrey's blade rang from its scabbard as she closed the distance to Winfrid Tolstan in the blink of her eyes, the power of her magical boots pulsing through her. She could sense that his cloak had power, and someone willing to draw a bow and no other weapon in a place like this had to be confident of their speed. Draining the mobility she had been storing over the battles of this tournament and the walks from place to place slowly should be enough to counter his agility.
She could see her foe's speed, a match for her own despite the Vanguard's Prayer cycling through her vessel. If she could strike first, victory would assuredly belong to her! The Initiative was the most important thing in the world!
But Winfrid Tolstan was more agile still–hands like greased lightning nocking an arrow of flint, flash-forged in the blink of an eye, flanked by four additional arrows materializing at all sides. He loosed! The five bolts volleying out, each curved in their way, but all angled to strike in the same window! None could block all of the attacks, and even if each blow was only a trifle–so too were the Sea's waves against the Land. Yet the Land continues to recede by inches, year by year.
This was rather faster, Audrey's blade darting between each attack bit by bit, the blows raining down on her with shocking force for how little Maegen she felt in the arrows. She understood the secret then.
It was said that all martial techniques could be measured in five layers. The Idea, the Application, the Refinement, Mastery, and Perfection. Each step is more efficient by far, drawing out more potential from the same investiture of energy. The hallmark of Perfection, however, was the integration of the technique to a level where it becomes second nature–no more difficult to unleash than walking down the road.
It was little surprise that his strength was overwhelming when he could attack five times in the blink of an eye, with the same difficulty a lesser archer would spend firing once! Even the Protection of Knightly Armor must acknowledge such mastery to an extent.
But that recognition only goes so far.
The remaining arrows that Audrey could not deflect bounced off of Zeal-infused Plate, her clever movements and additional investment being sufficient to overcome even the primacy of a Perfected Technique. In a heartbeat longer, she was upon her foe–blade outstretched to test his Hama.
From below emerged a wall of flint, growing from the earth itself to obstruct her movement, even as her opponent leaped off from his current position to the treetops. Not one to be deterred by such things, Audrey forced her way through it, her Plate shining as it warded off jagged edges and arcane wardings, and took to the branches herself, Hama supporting her using the thin surfaces as a scaffolding.
Her blade struck home–slowed, but not stopped by the transient obstruction. Though tangled in his Hama briefly, it wasn't enough to prevent her from withdrawing it and settling into a two-handed battle stance. She could feel something coiling underneath the platform her Hama formed through the branches–the pine scent of her foe's extended reach lurking beneath, most heavily condensed at his feet.
Which would explain how he was moving so quickly, she supposed. It wasn't quite the same as the Eotenslaga Shape, but it seemed centered similarly.
Her rival took a moment to calculate his next move, then nodded in recognition–Audrey's intrusion into his domain as a challenger. Then he shifted the grip on his bow–two hands on the stave.
It flashed with light, Maegen flowed freely, and Audrey found her rattled as like lightning, the stave crashed into her side, enchanted wood and sung spell seeking to cast her from the canopy to the ground, where its blessed son could strike freely.
Between her firm grip on her Ground and the blessing of her Plate, such magic found itself rebuffed, splashing away from her vessel with only a slight abrasion of her Hama from the force. A little rude of him, but she could return the favor with ease–she raised her blade high, as though she intended to cleave him in twain–but from below, she surged the Hama she stood upon to lash out–a set of jaws snapping up at Winfrid's leg.
It was no more effective than his assault, the jaws caught fast and tangled by strands of Hama. Still, it left Winfrid Tolstand wary of sharing the same branch as her, so with a flick of his wrist, an extension of Hama snapped from him to a tree, and reeled him back to a further position–shifting his grip once more to a shooting posture as another barrage of arrows began to manifest.
Audrey gave chase, dripping with ablated Zeal and Fervour, her wicked grin only concealed by her impassive visor, uncaring to the force of his blow–even as he gathered a greater quantity of Maegen into his assault–no longer would this be a casual probing strike, but a blow forceful enough to crack the plate of even a fully ordained Knight.
Fivefold darts burst out, once again volleying forward to pierce through Audrey. She did not hesitate, even as blow after blow rained down on her plate. Two were deflected, and three more struck home–chipping away at her protective Hama inch by bloody inch.
But they did not pierce her defenses, despite the strength invested in them. And she had the pleasure of witnessing Winfrid's eyes widen as she channeled the Black-Red Lightning into her sword.
Once again, ancient flint burst from below–defying the wood the two combatants clashed over–once again, conjured flint did little more than slightly delay the Eotenslaga scion's march, as the Giant-Killing Blow screamed in victory as it landed home, carving through Hama and mail alike, seeking flesh!
It found nothing, abruptly, as Audrey suddenly found the resistance facing her blade cease. A twitch in the threads of her web, from her blind spot!
She spun about, absorbing the force of her own evaded blow, the Eotenslaga Sword rising in an uppercut motion, in just the nick of time to catch the tip of something far more fearsome! An arrow–no, more like a javelin launched by an old Roman siege engine–entirely of Maegen and Ealdor-forged flint. She could see the shape of Winfrid's strategy now–a gambit to disappear when his foe was fully committed, only to strike at their blind spot with a baneful attack. Either be ground down by his storm of arrows or pinned by this ultimate attack and torn to bits.
Audrey Eotenslaga's Strandsense was not fooled though, feeling the disruption of his rapid translocation, and the intense power gathered at his destination. It was time enough to catch the attempted sneak-attack out.
And with a drop of Fervour, her blade cut through–the two halves parting harmlessly to either side of her.
"You know, that really should have worked," Winfrid mused, standing four trees away, breathing a little heavily after that gambit. "Well played, the advantage for the moment is yours."
Audrey inclined her head graciously in recognition of his point, flickering through the intervening space as the Darting Strike and her Perfect Footing allowed her to strike like counter-battery fire at her depleted rival. He did not bother to deploy the flint wall this time–having measured the potential of her strike and finding it no threat.
No, that wasn't the case at all! She didn't detect it until her feet shared the same branch–but the amount of Maegen within that branch had surged beyond all reason! Something was coming!
Trusting her instincts, Audrey jumped--a mere heartbeat before the branch shattered under the weight of an uncounted volume of Hama-roots, questing to shatter bone, to bind limb–to meddle and interfere in any fashion they could. It was a near thing–a desperate thing, but her quick reaction was barely enough to take her out of the way. Instinctually, she formed the Giant-Killing Blow again, lashing out with the destructive force that broke Giants in ancient times.
Out of position, with limited ability to maneuver in the air, she landed just short of Winfrid, who had already leaped back and was nocking another arrow. Was it that terrifying Elf-Shot again? The volley fire?
No!
Once again did the roots strike out–and this time, her momentum spent, they found themselves coiling around Audrey's legs, plate straining to hold them out, her Hama buckling under the pressure. More rose to coil around her arms, to render her helpless to defend herself, all while her foe seemed to relax, the expected Elf-shot only now beginning to form.
If he had faced Audrey before this journey had begun, it would have been checkmate, undoubtedly.
But she was not the same woman as the one who had first set foot into Winchester!
Her Hama reached into her gauntlet, twisting the ring hidden within just so.
The Strength-of-Stone Ring–a trifle, really–was precisely what she needed to turn the tides once more. Ripping through the Hama construct that sought to bind her, Audrey flew through the trees separating her from her foe, sword crashing against his Hama–and finally scratching against his mail!
It was just a touch, but his defenses were degrading! She just needed to keep this up for a while longer–and she could do this all day if needed!
Winfrid Tolstan, meanwhile, looked like he had eaten a sour bunch of berries at that, a hand tapping his chest. She saw calculation in his eyes for a moment, then a look of acceptance.
"That's that then." He said, helplessly. "We could continue this for another six exchanges by my reckoning, but with you having broken out from that second trap, I no longer have a viable path to victory."
Audrey snapped to stillness. "Wait… Really? Just like that?"
Winfrid nodded. "Just like that, there's no further point in wasting additional energy for a lost cause. It'll just weaken the both of us and at the end of the day, there's still one more challenge to go up against." He glanced back towards the clearing the battle had begun in. "Cornwall may be a good neighbor, and brothers in all but name… But they're still not part of Wessex."
Audrey mulled that over for a time, and then nodded. "True enough–well fought, Winfrid Tolstan!" She grinned then, raising her visor with one hand and offering her hand in acceptance. "I'd release you, but…"
The fae-blooded ranger shrugged. "You have companions who need compensation, I understand, fortunately, I've claimed enough victories to pay my ransom and then some, I've little to fear in that regard. My interest was mostly in showing my skills to the King's Court. I believe our clash has done that quite adequately." He glances back to the clearing. "Take a moment to get your breath, your cousin appears willing to buy you that time."
Audrey blinked. "Wait, what?"
0~0~0
"Gah!" Osric cried out, a flash of molten sunfire tearing through Hama, Mail, and flesh as he was blown back into a tree, slumping over. "Ha…" He laughs weakly. "Barely two exchanges, huh?"
"That's impressive indeed!" Margh Grouse compliments, though his cheery voice is reduced somewhat by the great helm he wears, adding a metallic echo. "To even last two exchanges puts you in rarified company. Be proud! Osric Eotenslaga! You are indeed among the mighty! You need not fear any penalty inflicted on my part, your kinsman was gracious to my own, and I have not forgotten that!"
"Wonderful" Osric groaned. "You still handed me my arse in no time though."
"But of course! I am not at my mightiest right now, true enough, but with the Sun still high in the sky, I have few equals short of those decades our senior." Margh magnanimously declares. "I admit though, I'm quite excited to challenge your cousin. Sir Eotenslaga did ask for a match." He cricked his neck, as though he had merely gone through a modest stretch. "Now, I believe he's finished up with Sir Tolstan by now, so if I go and catch up in a hurry…"
" AUGH!" Cried another voice, followed by a rush of heat, and the two fighters both looked to the side to witness Mildred Schofield standing strong, her armor scuffed, smoldering flames licking off of the sword currently outstretched before her, fragments of shattered jewels all over the place–and craters and pockmarks everywhere, leading on to a trail of scorched grass and the unconscious form of the Squire she had clashed with.
There was little time to rest though, like a machine, she pivoted in her position to be ready to face Margh Grouse.
"Ahhh, there was you too Sir Schofield!" He sounded elated. "The more the merrier I always say! And that was a fine technique you displayed there! I'm excited to see how mine matches up!" He saunters forward, blade casually held at his side. "So, while Sir Eotenslaga catches up…"
"No need for that!"
A whistle was all that preceded Audrey Eotenslaga landing back in the clearing, a perfect three-pointed landing with the Eotenslaga sword brandished and held in her remaining hand. She looked up, matching Margh's gaze. "Apologies for the delay, Winfrid was a formidable opponent."
"Great!" Osric gives a weak thumbs up. "Kick his arse for me, would you? I think… I'm going to have a bit of a lie-down if that would be alright." He slumped over in place–still breathing, but too spent to do anything more.
Audrey's eyes narrowed, as she finally assessed her foe properly. Mildred was still at the flank, she wouldn't be fighting this behemoth alone, and her armor seemed to be repairing itself properly, so…
"Shall we begin then?" Margh's smile was nearly audible, even behind his full helmet. "I'm very excited to see how well you two can do! It's alright to come at me all at once! I did approach you while the sun was still high after all, it would hardly be sporting to demand a one-on-one duel in light of that, would it not?"
The pressure wafting off of Margh Grouse was suffocating.
Audrey couldn't wait to see if he was as tough as the reputation said!

You are facing Margh Grouse, and…
[KNIGHT OF THE SUN]
You can't get a good read on him. All you know is that his strength waxes as the sun approaches its zenith. You're well past that point but he's still far stronger than anyone else in this contest. Mildred will support you as best as she sees fit, but you should expect to be outmatched in this duel.
That being said, from what you've read of his personality, he's an honest sort, you probably don't need to worry about any real deception coming from him. That being said, you've seen him using unarmed attacks, so he almost certainly is an adept grappler, even if that's not necessarily his primary focus. There's probably no easy solution to this fight, so you'll have to employ what you learned about Brythonic Cultivation in fighting Jory and the legends he seeks to emulate to devise an effective strategy against him.
You can't directly order Mildred, even if you know her specific toolkit. But you know she has access to her Jewel-based Revelation, and she's done something heat-related as well, though none of you caught what it was. She's not helpless in close quarters of course, but she's likely at her best when given space and time to operate, similar to Gilbert, but much more seasoned and not quite as meek.
Because you're not stupid, and this is likely to be your final match of the Melee, you've taken the liberty of restoring your Armor to full (-4 Zeal, -1 Armor Charge). You still have 5 to spend, and you should seriously consider doing so. You've had a chance to get your breath and recover your Hama thanks to Osric challenging Margh to a duel while you waited. So it's back to full capacity.
This is the final battle! Do your best!

AN: And that's how important compatibility is in a fight, someone who would have crushed 99% of the competitors here goes down against a gorilla who's almost perfectly specced against him, who'd have thought it.

I believe we can get away with not using Perfect Footing, but Prayer for Perseverance and Vanguards Prayer are a given. Slip Free is probably a good one to swap in instead of that. Clever Deflection is required, and the remaining 4 slots should be various attacks I think. @Alectai what gear is Sunbro using, as I don't immediately see any listed

It'd be weird if it wasn't at least Fine, but he's doing Some Shit to make it hard to read his build properly. (Which is why you're not getting that usual "This is what I think they'll do" thing here. It's purely Audrey listing out information she already got and trying to extrapolate from there)
He might have one piece of Superior quality gear, but yeah, for the most part, he probably will be mostly Fine quality. He's definitely wearing mail and a helmet though, and definitely has a sword.
There's probably no easy solution to this fight, so you'll have to employ what you learned about Brythonic Cultivation in fighting Jory and the legends he seeks to emulate to devise an effective strategy against him.
Well, a quick google and wikipedia skim doesn't give an obvious weakness of gawain other than perhaps a bit about two of the versions of his death being blows that his helmet doesn't stop, one of them because his helmet was unlaced... Of course, i'm pretty sure trying to stab through his visor would be rather unsporting in a friendly tournament even if that was the answer
So, given that it's clear that Brythonic Cultivators use the Welsh progenitor myths just as much as the later iterations of the story, just gonna drop something about the Welsh origin for Gawain, Gwalchmei:
Dude was giant-blooded, but also babyshook Witches and Giants himself
So. Going all in with the Eotenslaga techs is probably our only real chance to keep up in this fight for long enough that Mildreds contributions can prove decisive
Because Mildred getting caught for even a second will probably trigger any anti-Witchcraft bonuses he might be benefiting from

K, thanks. Mainly was confused over if he had a shield or not, and therefore whether to open with darting strike or axe toss.
Gear wise, assuming everything is Fine, he is looking at 70 armour, +6 to Defence (I'm assuming this is Forged Iron gear, as I'm raiding NQ1 for these stats), and something I can't find for attacks (probs a +4?). If his mail is Superior, then thats an extra 10hp and +1 Defence, the helm and the sword would just give him a +1 Defence/Attack. Gear wise, we are simply better, but his stats are probably just unreasonably high right now so overall we're at best even I'd say. At least he just has armour and fortitude, no Hama equivilent.
[] Back to Basics, Stab Him v1
-[] Stance: Prayer for Perseverance (5/turn), Vanguards Prayer (6/turn), Clever Deflection, Slip Free, Darting Strike, Black Scratch, Giant Killing Blow, Faulty Ground
-[] Expenditures: 11 Fervour per Turn, 8/8 Capacity Used, No Zeal used yet as idk where to use it
-[] Tactics: Rush him, try and trip him up, stab him a bunch? Use GKB when he's just launched off a big attack as he should have to move over to his next "Chalice" of Fervour-Equivalent and therefore shouldn't be able to throw a major defence in the way. If grappled, get the hell out immediately.
Pls give ideas on where to shove our 5 Zeal (3 for +1 to all rolls for a round, 1 per 20 damage, 1 to uncap fervour use on a single move to defeat Rebuke style stuff, probs useless here). Also better tactics and and move complaints are welcome.
This is very much Audrey facing a build that's currently "Her, But Better"
With the stone strength ring expended I don't believe that she can win a grapple clash, and I'd bet against a Hama-reliant strategy being truly effective here
The best move is probably going to be TANKING Margh until the tag team partner can burn him down
If we're expecting to lose and don't actually have a clever strategy why not just swarm him with GKB?
With Audrey replenish and reserves she can mange 3 ish rounds of full on GKB with every attack, if we're judging from previous battles in this tournament they don't really go past round 2 and as this is the last battle we don't need to save our resources.
So a basic plan that just calls for back to back to back GKB's would at least mathematically mean one or two of them gets through and that would do a lot of damage.
But really even if it doesn't, we need to consider more then just the mechanical aspect and the narrative of Audrey spamming GKB at him means he must focus on her least he gets hit by one of her uberblows and leave our partner free to attack and support.
And if we already assume we wont really last long (to the fourth round) we don't lose much.
Honestly, unless something really clever gets pitched that likely the plan I'll make, get in his face, spam GKB and force him to focus on Audurey.

He is something of a head on fighter so he might take us on, but the qm's have said several times that you need a big opening for GKB so i'd imagine that won't work unless he chooses to let us spam it. Otherwise i'm sure he's capable of just backpedaling.
Thinking we might want to go more for black scratch spam.
Also think that stunning blow could be a useful tactic here if zeal boosted. His attacks are likely too big for us to reliably clever deflect so it could create an opening for GKB.
Tho i am curious as to the narrative coolness of zeal boosted black scratches or a mega boosted zeal GKB dump.
