Kingdom on the World's Edge [A Fief Builder / Cultivation Quest]

Voting is open
The Viridian Elk Tribe are perfectly willing to sell elixirs still. Hmm, but not mystic ones. Zheng has to focus on making the best use of her time, which means making royal elixirs to sell to monarchs. And no one else in the elk tribe is good enough to make mystic elixirs.

[ ] Food Aid (Sect) (Administration DC 20/27/32/36)
Sometimes you just want to help some one out for your own reasons. Perhaps you want to make them endebted to you. Perhaps you don't want to keep them as a buffer state. Perhaps you just want to do good. Whatever the reason you can put together shipments of food and mundane goods to help troubled regions.

This will provide enough food to keep a sect and its surroundings stable for a year. The DC affects how much it cuts into your own supplies.

Cost: $300
Improves Relations
Improves Stability of Target Region

Check. That works and doesn't meaningfully change the plan, I don't think.

Hmmm. We probably do want to do this...doing it this turn drops our odds of the highest DC on the Alchemy Hall from 92% to a around 82-83% (since it takes an action away from Nuan Heng's training). Hmmmm. The actual Food Aid roll he'll be rolling with +27 due to his specialization in logistics and would very likely be fine, IMO. With Mystical Elixirs, the first number skyrockets to over 99% and the second becomes a +29.

Oh, actually, thinking about it all the above assumes his logistics specialization wouldn't apply to setting up the Alchemy Hall. If it would, that first number gets much, much, better.

So, @Arcanestomper Would Nuan Heng's logistics bonus apply to setting up the alchemy hall? I mean, it seems like it'd definitely apply to the Food Aid, but I'm less sure about it applying to making a new business.

If it doesn't apply, what does only hitting DC 32 on setting up the Alchemy Hall actually do to our hiring prospects, and can we purchase one or two Mystical Admin Elixirs from the Viridian Elk in order to help us ship them food? Like, we'd tell them our own logistics are stretched (a true statement, as it so happens) and it would help us to help them. I think we probably do it either way (and have edited it into the plan for that reason), but this is the sort of thing where it would make sense for them to be flexible. I mean, they probably have a few stockpiled and dipping into that reserve to let us help them out would make sense...

Still, we probably wouldn't even ask about the elixirs if Nuan Heng's bonus applies to the alchemy hall. We can manage in that case.

With how big the Dc is I do think we should just do our own alchemy hall still if possible. since thats the Same Dc as making the guilds/creating our own orgs.

What we really need their help with is the more rare and obscure elixirs (ie: those for skills other than schools) which I suspect are not as easy to get the recipes for as making our own alchemy hall. Also, helping them out and improving relations might get us access to Royal elixirs, and Royal and Mystical ones are beyond what our own alchemy hall will be able to produce.

Like, we're definitely making our own alchemy hall, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't actually get us more than a Master level alchemist, and so while it might help it doesn't replace our connection over there.

Nuan Heng's bonus applies to anything that involves distributing goods. Which actually makes me realize that it shouldn't apply to things like the census. But definitly the alchemy hall. You have to get it built and stocked after all.

Sweet, no elixirs needed then, we'll just do this as is.

And yeah, it not applying to the census seems correct...I don't think that +2 has ever been needed to succeed at a census, though, so I think it's a non-error.

So, two things:

1. I did a formatting change on my plan posts (doesn't effect the plan in the vote itself) that will carry over going forward to make them less 'giant wall of text'...the length honestly just crept up on me. Hopefully this makes analyzing them easier for people.
2. Apropos of nothing, but we bought the basic manuals for them so we should know: What are the most common Solar and Lunar Schools called and what do they do? I'm super curious. Ditto for the Magma, Bone, and Puppet Schools from the Imbalanced Paths, for that matter. Like, I could guess...but some of my guesses for ones we know would've been very wrong if I was going based on name alone. Full descriptions aren't wildly necessary, but some basic knowledge would be good.

I'm going to close the vote tomorrow. I'm feeling a bit glum right now because well basically I just lost in one of my long running games. So I'm not sure when I'll be in the mood to get the update done. But I'll try and post the schools tomorrow.

Additional Technique Schools
School of Night's Shadow (Lunar)
This school allows cultivators to control non living materials. It is not quite as powerful as any one element, but it covers almost everything a cultivator will encounter in their travels and thus is quite versatile.

School of the Sun's Visage
This school allows cultivators to control living, or once living, things. Although this appears quite similar to wood it also allows cultivators to control animal life, and there is more to control than just brute force. A cultivator of the Sun's visage can reinforce their chosen targets making them stronger and tougher.

School of Magma (Fire, Metal)
The school of magma specializes in intense heat. So intense that the very earth melts and bubbles into pools of lava that the cultivator can then launch at their opponents combining the damage of fire with the weight of a stone.

School of Ash (Fire, Wood)
The school of ash teaches practitioners how to encourage life to grow and flourish, and then be consumed in a raging inferno. Sometimes this is literal, but it can also be used to train spirit beasts or even the cultivators in how to consume their own life force for a boost in power.

School of Rust (Water, Metal)
The school of rust is one of the premier dueling schools. It is all about making quick intense strikes that deliver corrosive rust qi into the target to dissolve them and their weapons from the inside out.

School of Sand (Earth, Fire)
The school of sand allows cultivators to manipulate sand into any kind of form they might desire. This is helpful both in creating treasures and quickly laying out formation. These are very temporary, but can be forged in the heat of battle as long as sand is available. Unsurprisingly one of the pillars of the school is how to dry earth and degrade it into sand at a moments notice.

School of Bone (Wood, Earth)
The school of bone is a somewhat rare one to learn naturally as it emphasizes how wood and bones left underground for extended periods of time turn into rock. Most imbalanced cultivators don't have enough life span to make good use of the full extent of this school, but with a little preparation they can prepare treasures that are much more durable than normal.

School of Poison (Wood, Water)
This is the quintessential poison school. Other paths of poison specialize for different purposes, but the school of poison is about poison for its own sake. As such somewhat ironically practitioners of this path tend to be researchers more than assasins, but given their qi is literally poisonous most people still give them a wide birth.

School of Puppet (Metal, Wood)
This school focuses on crafting puppets to do tasks for their puppet masters, both in combat and outside it. This allows a puppet master to craft specialized puppets for different tasks that while not as strong as a regular cultivator in that task are usually better than a non specialized one.

School of Brick (Metal, Earth)
This school focuses on construction. There isn't anyone better at quickly raising walls and erecting buildings. It doesn't have much use offensively, but is a supreme defense school and brick cultivators are highly sought after for construction work.

Rust maybe, but chances are junjie would find distasteful. Brick would be more intresthing to him but not really for combat.

The Schools of Brick and Rust seem promising for the MC.

Rust is probably unnecessary. Piercing Blade is also dueling-specialized and we're gonna modify it into a custom school quite soon, which will likely take care of our combat school needs for the foreseeable future (a custom school gives bonuses to all kinds of combat...for us, anyway). Brick is actually useful if we want to specialize in building things, but we kinda don't.

Junjie is a pure metal cultivator anyway. So he wouldn't really be able to take advantage of any of these.

Is that an obstacle? So far, using schools with elements other than your own has been perfectly fine (to say nothing of the fact that Junjie does explicitly dabble in Water Schools). Or is it only an obstacle specifically for the Ten Imbalanced Paths? That'd certainly make sense if so given their focus on correcting a Qi imbalance, but others not being able to use them hadn't been mentioned previously.

This is basically an academic question since, as I said, I don't think Junjie wants any of these anyway, but it seems worth asking.

There's nothing stopping Junjie from learning any of these schools, but since they're based on transforming your core into automatic Qi converter in order to generate their specialized Qi he'd be stuck having to convert Qi manually. Which would be a bit of a hassle.

If you're still taking disciple suggestions:

Name: QM's Choice
Role: Horse Girl
Roots: Fire/Wood/Solar
Description: A girl who's very enthusiastic about equestrianism.

Fire/Wood/Solar sounds like it'd be a great root for beastkeepers.

Yes, I'm still taking them. I should make an archival listing somewhere to keep track.

Also my apologies about the update. Between personal matters and my work this week has basically been a wash. I'll try to get everything updated before or on the weekend. But next week is also going to be very busy for me.

Junjie

You take some time considering what you are intending before you finally get down to the work of forging the treasure, or rather scribing it. For in this case you are making a large tome filled with formations of space bending and knowledge. Then you have scribes copy a large portion of your library, which you then insert into said formations.

Finally you make a sort of artificial spirit that you task with inhabiting the book and answering questions about the contents. The intent of course is to make a portable library that an aspiring sage can use to quickly and easily look up any information they might need for their studies. You think it works well enough when you test it. Though you haven't made anything like it before so only actual use will show for sure.

The next item on your agenda is another painting. This time you make it a grand landscape of Xian Gu. With the five elements and the holy land in the center it is a surprisingly insightful piece. You see the same thing every day from your balcony, but committing it to canvas has a way of opening your eyes to details you have long overlooked.

Next you make another set of royal armor. Normally this would be one of your most favorite pieces to forge in the whole world, but you have to admit that even you are getting a little tired of your own workshop. You don't normally spend quite this much time inside it's walls.

Still you don't let that impede your work. You methodically craft a set of scale armor using the best materials you can get your hands on and your most thorough understanding of Qi and battle. The end result is quite pleasing. Not your absolute best work, but still well above what anyone else can accomplish.

The final item on your list is one you hesitate over. You feel as if a set of meditation beads will not be of the most help to your Uncle in law. He already seems to have his own cultivation well in hand. Then you shrug. You might as well make them. It won't hurt. If he doesn't need them you have no doubt he will be able to sell them for a significant sum, which will only help Longshan.

You've made enough of these things that you don't even need to refer to your plans as you hammer out another set of perfect spheres. This set will be able to handle significantly more Qi than the ones you have made before, but otherwise corresponds to the same basic pattern.

Perfected Royal Treasure: +4 Cultivation – Training Sage Only
Perfected Royal Treasure: +4 Sage
Perfected Royal Treasure: +4 Armor
Perfected Royal Treasure: +4 Cultivation

Mei

Li Mei wanders into the wilds in search of adventure and maybe some form of potent Qi to help with the drought and Uncle Rong's ascension. She travels through weeks across the wilds. The vast majority of the land she covers is weak and barren. That is why it is unsettled after all.

But there are exceptions. Ancient ruins, dragon springs, and upwellings of Qi as strong as any in Longshan or even Baishan. Or even more so. That is why the Wild Lands are not safe, and the other reason they aren't settled.

Still after traveling for some time she was somewhat displeased to have not found anything of particular interest. Nothing of particular use for a monarch at least. So she is somewhat excited when she finally feels a massive beacon of qi on the horizon.

She immediately flies to it and is somewhat confused to find nothing but more forest, that is until she concentrates on the beacon again and realizes that it is not in the ground, but in fact in the sky. This would be a major obstacle even for most monarchs, but Li Mei is not most monarchs.

She transforms into lightning and flies up and up. All the way through the cloud banks until finally she is far above the earth. From there she sees an amazing sight. An enormous island flying in the sky.

It is covered in forest and waterfalls splash down over the sides. She can see birds flying around it and hear animals flocking among the trees. And it is overflowing with Qi. Such an enormous amount that it makes her salivate at the thought. Enough for Uncle Rong to advance and keep Longshan supplied all at once.

And even better, the island is floating. So perhaps it can be moved somewhere more suitable than the wastes.

Li Mei flies closer, but as she does she spots a small hut. It looks to be made from old branches, rice straw, and clay. A simple peasant thing with some old broken tools lying in the yard. Li Mei is not fooled. This is a floating island filled with qi in the middle of the wastes. Peasants do not live here.

Cautiously she lands and approaches what she can only assume is the home of a hidden master. As much as she would like to explore the island itself, whoever lives here must at least be a monarch. It would be wise to greet them first.

Calling out, she announces herself, "I am Queen Li Mei. I offer my greetings to the mistress of the island."

The door creaks open and an old peasant woman hobbles out. Her shawl is filthy, her eyes are crusted over, and she is using a badly repaired hoe to walk. "Oh, oh who goes there. A Queen? Oh no I wasn't expecting a guest."

Cautiously Mei extends her presence to touch the old woman. She feels nothing at all. Not even a scrap of qi. She must not be a simple mortal and presents no danger whatsoever. So of course Mei bows, "Greetings senior. This one humbly asks if she may explore the island."

There is a very long pause, and the peasant woman says, "Not even a little hubris eh. Honestly I was expecting more violence from the Violet Dragon."

Li Mei remains bowed and doesn't say a word. "Fine, fine. I can see you pay attention to the old tales. You may rise." By the end the voice has transformed from a creaking drawl to a smooth lilt. And when Mei looks up she sees that the house and peasant woman are gone, replaced by an lady in flowing robes that glows with ethereal green light.

"I have never heard tales of this island honored one, but I can spot the discrepancies."

The other figure laughs, "You'd be surprised at how many people don't. I was looking forward to a more drawn out test of character. I don't get many visitors up here after all." She sighs, "Very well I suppose you've passed my trial such as it was. I am Tianshu Yawen, the Lady of Piāofú de shù. You're probably here because you sensed Qi. So I'll let you explore the island. Pick some herbs. Mine some rocks. Or maybe instead have some tea with me. It's been a while since I had some to talk with."

Mei considers.

[ ] Look for materials
Just here at the end of the forest Li Mei can spot dozens of royal herbs sticking up out of the grass. Given the elevated levels of Qi on the rest of the island she is certain that she could find a bountiful harvest, and Lady Tianshu doesn't seem to mind.

[ ] Talk with Lady Tianshu
In all the tales Li Mei has read it's usually better to pass up material rewards for the chance at wisdom. But not all tales are true, and these old cultivators can be very unpredictable. Yes, getting some cultivation tips from Lady Tianshu would probably be beneficial, she's almost certainly an Imperial at least, but Li Mei might end up being thrown off the island with her cultivation sealed if she says the wrong thing. Or even if she says the right thing. As another "trial."

The Puppet Division
After returning from her travels Mei calls Zan Yaling to her court to discuss the new division. She appoints the Commander Zan to be her Royal General and they begin to go over the logistics of drastically expanding the puppet corps.

Unfortunately there are two major obstacles before them. The first is the sheer size of a division. Even with the other Xian Gu divisions added into the puppet corps they are still well understrength. Hundreds of new soldiers will have to be recruited and trained. Which isn't a problem in itself. There are plenty of low level cultivators who would sign up for a chance at steady work and training.

The problem is the leadership. A division requires three grandmasters to lead it properly. General Zan can't do it alone, and most of the other grandmasters in Longshan are otherwise occupied. Count Zhou and Count Gu would be good fits, but they are leading their respective sects. Bishop Jiang is a powerful and experienced cultivator, but has little experience leading an army. The same goes for Grandmaster Wu Fen. Guardian Yin would be a good choice, but is also busy running the kingdom's guards. And grandmaster Li is just not suitable with his primary specialty being beast taming.

There are effectively two choices

[ ] Recruit from the current grandmasters
-[ ] Pick two
This would allow the leadership of the division to be quickly put into place fostering its development. And the current grandmasters are all relatively loyal to Queen Mei. However it would take away from their other duties.

[ ] Try to recruit wandering grandmasters
There aren't a ton of itinerant grandmasters and even less with the necessary skills. Most itinerant cultivators tend to settle down once they reach that level. But there are some. Hiring them will likely be expensive however, and their loyalty won't be guaranteed.

The other issue with the division is simply training. Even with the current regiments being mixed in with the recruits it will take some time to bring everyone up to a proper level of skill.

New Division
Costs: $1,200/Turn; Costs increase by $120/turn until it reaches $4,800/Turn.

Li Chao

This year is when Li Chao formally starts his cultivation training, never mind the fact that he's already been an apprentice for three years now is the time when you solemnly hand him the manuals on the school of the caged sun and inform him of your plans for his development.

He then demonstrates that his precocity extends to more than just his intelligence as he engages in a bit of rebellion several years ahead of your timeline. Of course his rebellion doesn't consist of anything so unseemly as shirking his studies or going to play with friends.

No, instead he plops down in the inner courtyard of his palace and informs you that he's not coming out until he's a warrior. He seems fully intent on fulfilling this mandate until you send a bit of qi into his meridians to disrupt his breakthrough. Sitting down with your son you ask him about why exactly he wants to reach the warrior so fast and he gives you a look of pure confusion.

"But that is what cultivators do. We cultivate to become more powerful. The faster I become a warrior the better I will be."

You sigh and sit with him, "In a way that is true, but power is meaningless by itself. I do not doubt you could reach the warrior. Indeed I expect you could reach master in a few short years, but it would be an empty realm. You would have the Qi, but no way to utilize it. No understanding of other methods."

"Now it is true that in normal circumstances becoming a warrior first would allow you to train your other skills more effectively. But the Caged Sun is different. It is the foundation on which your cultivation will rest just as your Uncle Heng and Aunt Xia have their foundations."

"But they didn't focus on their paths before they ascended. They only did so until they could ascend."

It is not a distinction you expected an eight year old to make, but you nod, "That is true, but that was not the best way only the best that was available to them. They would have benefited from fully understanding their paths first, and you will benefit even more so from the Caged Sun. More specifically, being able to build a caged sun for each of your realms will greatly strengthen you."

"I know you do not truly need a sun at this stage, but I want what is best for you, and you do not need to gain power as fast as possible. Your mother and I will protect Longshan while you grow."

Li Chao considers this his face a picture of concentration. Finally he nods and you start walking him through the first volume. You might not specifically have trained in the school, but you are a monarch. Explaining an apprentice technique is easy enough.

Quest Note: I've been putting this off for a while. So I decided to just bite the bullet and get the first part out. It's mostly narrative since running the budget takes a big chunk of time by itself. I'll do that and the rest of the turn tomorrow.

Well, all of that seems to have gone pretty well. As does the rolled stuff we haven't seen yet (based purely on said rolls). In terms of votes:

[X] Talk with Lady Tianshu

I'm gonna be honest here, I have no idea which option is better, but this one seems more interesting. In the absence of knowing what's good, I'll go with that.

[X] Try to recruit wandering grandmasters

We, uh, sort of need our Grandmasters where they are. Skills can be trained (our existing Grandmasters are not high General characters for the most part anyway and we have manuals for the skill), loyalty can be instilled (we are, in fact, pretty good at that in several ways), and we can afford the price. I'd be more reluctant if we didn't already have a commander to put over them, but with Zan Yaling keeping an eye on them, I think we can afford for the others to be new.

not that interested in just materials. since We can get the ore for as well as we can craft. and we dont have people good enough to make use of high grade herbs to make anything with or even to potentially grow them (which I would be weary to do with the draught)
