Itinerant: A Pilgrim Quest

[X] Asked to be given the red-headed maid, then fainted.

Hey, hey Red. Remember when you lamented all angst like?

We're gonna fix that. A Pilgrim moves with the will of the Saints, and far be it from us to be leave a despairing soul in despair when we can help bring her hope.

That, or at least take some gold for our travels.

Also, okay, guys, after some deliberation, I think I need to make something clear here, regarding not accepting the gifts given: this is not going to sit well with Ulla. I understand that you associate the option with humility, but the MC, as a character should realize, in-setting, that this option is not going to be appreciated - it will read as something of an offence towards the head of the house. Receiving fine gifts is an incredibly honoured practice, it reinforces the status of both the gift-giver and gift-taker. That is not to say that you have no reason not to accept any of the gifts; the reason that you are a pilgrim, and do not want to burden yourself with the temporal is a good one, but it will not read as impressive or pious to anyone in the hall, maybe aside from Galen.

Huh. Thanks for telling us. So.. Shield, maybe? I'm still not keen on the girl, I admit, but if nothing is not a (good) option...

If you want a Super Piety option you can always give away what you have just received in the manner of Galen.

Well, in that case I'll ask for something of use.
[X] Asked to be given a shield, then fainted.
I just reread the Iliad and all of Agamemnon's posturing to Achilleus might have colored my stance on gifts.

Well, in this case it is very much the issue of a more, hm, vertical power relations. Ulla is rewarding you as a chieftain would reward his warriors; accepting his gift is a part of accepting or buying into a power relationship with him, where his military success brings wealth and good fortune to everyone that follows him. It is not servitude per se, but more of an opportunity for him to showcase his success and mettle by showering his men with rewards.

A shield's really heavy, and if the update's made it clear we aren't use to it in battle, much less while traveling.

Best we go for Gold instead.

I like the shield imaginary, and if it's too heavy, well, the solution is clear: grow stronger! (Or sell it :>)

I mean, gold is also heavy... (Not as heavy as a shield, I know, I know)

Shields are wood and leather and more clumsy to carry than heavy. If it's a particularly fine shield it might have more iron in it, along the edge, than only in the boss. I can't imagine it staying described as heavy for an extremely long period of time.

[X] Asked to be given gold, then fainted.

The shield is cumbersome and will attract to much attention. We can't "hide" it like we do the spear. Red is all around too much trouble, we're barely surviving as it is. We'll just get her killed.

Well, if we're going to complete the set, a shield makes combat FAR more forgiving.
Gold is of course, good, but we're not quite living in the parts where gold in the hands of a lone woman is going to be as valuable

What do we even need gold for? We have enough for a year of modest living, beyond that, Saints will provide.

Ah, "Saints will provide" self-quote was meant to be the answer to transport question. Also we have the money to give to a kind soul - it's the same fund that will feed us for a year.

Clinging to earthly wealth is not very Saintly, so away with material wealth, I say!

Saints help those who help themselves.

I literally cannot see how having more money just in case is a problem.

Something something root of evil?

I mean, we already have a "just in case" fund, it's what we looted corpses for. Asking for more 'just because' seems to me like the kind of thing that's getting way too close to greed for my comfort.

Mind, I like money as much as the next person, but hoarding funds doesn't seem IC for a pilgrim. Or proper, for that matter.

Looks like it might be one of those "agree to disagree " things. I don't have much more to offer, and I should be asleep anyway, so.

Goodnight, and hope our character doesn't get an infection?

It also helps convince people we're a witch.:V

It's not IC or proper for us to carry weapons either. As a pilgrim or a woman. Our IC reason for even having Cu's spear is to return to his people.

Traditionally, shields are carried on the back, not in hand. That it is heavy for us to wield does not mean it would be too heavy to transport, and it gives us an incentive to work out. We have a long journey ahead of us.

It's not IC or proper for us to carry weapons either. As a pilgrim or a woman. Our IC reason for even having Cu's spear is to return to his people.
Yet we still trained with it when given a chance (and I don't even mean the house of Ulla). The reason given was 'ok, since we have a spear anyway - why not learn how to use it?'

Now that we have the virtue of being a Warrior, it has become IC. We are not the same woman that left her home a few weeks ago - not even the same one that escaped Notker's boat a week ago. The journey is shaping our character anew, for better or for worse.

One issue worth pointing out is, hm, how to put it, inventory space. Your sack is of a limited size, most of it is taken up by the book and your food supplies (which are lower because of the book). Adding a few gold coins won't change that, but as you remember from the talk with Reik, gold is seldom made into coins anymore, and usually into more elaborate jewels. Of course, you could carry them outwardly - and it would be considered very proper and correct thing, particularly since gold-lust is very appropriate for your, hm, new profession, but it could also make others realize that you have gold. Which may prove troublesome! Note, however, that the gold of that kind makes you rather... rich? Poor choice of a word. It is not going to buy you a loaf or bread, but if you want a horse, a slave, or a house...

EDIT: Also the vote race is still very close! Remember, your vote may change a difference. Here, and outside of this quest too, but please, we shouldn't get political.

EDIT EDIT: Change a difference? Fucking hell, and I am pretending I can speak English. Make a difference, right?

Please kill me.
