Chapter 13 - Interlude.
Hyuga Medical
A delicate hand slowly flipped open a thick folder, the name Hiroshi cleanly printed across its face. Stamped on the folder under the name was a simple shepherd's hook.
The woman lightly tapped her lips with the end of her fountain pen as she copied over the notes she had already written down.
Hiroshi's chakra network shows extreme abnormalities not present in anyone else in the clan nor in our recorded medical history. (Addendum 1 ~ 3, Abnormalities.)
Hiroshi's chakra network is strangely static and malleable to him at least. He has shown from the moment that it was awakened, an absurd degree of control over his chakra. (Addendum 7, Control Test)
His chakra network reacts strangely in situations that seem almost banal. In some situations, his chakra system will absorb blockages as though they did nothing, and in others, the blockages will stick around for much longer than the blocker intended. (Addendum 12 ~ 14, Foreign Chakra Tests.)
Chakra return is of particular notice with Hiroshi. Regardless of activity Hiroshi shows an abnormal rate of chakra return. Chakra return does not seem to vary regardless of physical activity or mental stimulus. Hiroshi shows an increased rate of return during sleep and meditation. (Addendum 15 ~ 24, Chakra Return)
Hiroshi exhibited an affinity towards Lightning chakra when examined. Though the affinity itself seems to be weak. No secondary affinities were shown during additional examination. (Addendum 25 ~ 27, Elemental Affinity)
Hiroshi's musculature shows extreme abnormalities in addition to his chakra network. His muscles do not react naturally to being trained. They do not expand and grow as normal, instead returning to how they were before they were torn during training.
Hiroshi has been the subject of the clans most rigorous pre teen toning regime for a year and his muscles show no sign of adapting or growing as normal. Recommend that he be removed from the regime as it's quite clear that his muscle growth is out of our control.
Hiroshi's pain tolerance and endurance are absurd. He exhibits initial response to pain but almost none afterward. His endurance limit was never really found as the clan deemed further testing to be egregious risks to Hiroshi himself. (Addendum 28 ~ 59, Musculature)
A frown crossed her eyes and she read over the next section, she had no intention at all of copying it over to the document headed to Hiroshi's new sensei. She felt it was pointless though, with an abnormality as exposed hard to hide as it was she doubted it would be long before Hiroshi's new sensei showed up asking about it.
Clan Head or Elder Approval Only
Hiroshi's body shows no sign of reacting to external stimulus. He has been punched hard enough to shatter stone yet he remarks that it hurt and little else. No bruising will come from it and Hiroshi himself seems to not notice it.
Hiroshi has been 'stabbed' before, and nothing remained afterwards. When cut, a small trail of blood would appear but no wound.
We do not understand it, and further testing has been deemed too dangerous for Hiroshi given his current age.
A slight smile crossed the woman's face as she read over the next section, Hiroshi has been an endless font of abnormalities since he was first brought to the attention of the clan's medical section, so why would his Byakugan be any different?
Hiroshi's Byakugan upon activation was listed at being able to see fifty meters. Well above average for first-time activations. Hiroshi's body showed an usually strong integration with the Byakugan. The veins and blood vessels around his eyes weren't engorged when he activated the Byakugan, nor did they show up when left on for extended periods of time.
This however was proven false as his range and expertise in its use grew, so too did the strain on the blood vessels around his eyes. This phenomenon has been noted multiple times in our history and is nothing to worry about.
Hiroshi's Byakugan has shown to have reached a remote-viewing distance of three hundred meters by the time he entered the academy. Well above average. Hiroshi's Byakugan has shown consistent and continuous growth since activation.
Hiroshi has also shown absolutely phenomenal increases in physical ability while it is active, almost doubling his physical ability while active. We have been unable to determine why. (Addendum 60 ~ 67 Byakugan)
The woman sighed gustily, that was putting it lightly, Hiroshi's initial Byakugan activation had been a point of contention between a few groups, and in the end, they had all be silenced when the results of his Byakugan testing phase had been done.
To be honest, she herself was in mild awe of its potential. Three hundred meters as an academy student? She couldn't wait to see what he had when he reached his peak… if he did.
A grimace crossed her face as she thought about it.
Well, there went her good mood.
She sighed again before two warm arms wrapped around her, she leaned back and rested her head against her husband's shoulder, "Honey, what have I told you about sneaking up on me when I'm working?"
Her husband caressed her chin, "Not too, but I figure you could use a distraction."
His piece said, her husband removed his hands and slowly began to massage her shoulders.
She practically melted into it, mind going fuzzy. Her lips twitched in fond exasperation, "Oh fine. You win. I'll do it tomorrow."
Her husband leaned in again, "Well, that's good. I have it on good authority that the bed's nice and warm this time of night."
A gaily laugh slipped from her, as she gently slapped her husband's chest. "Oh? Is it now, I'll just have to check that myself!"

Kushina and her Apprentice
The doors to the mission office slammed open, permitting a woman with a head of flaming hair who practically begged the man behind the mission desk. In both tone and posture.
"Toshi! What's this I hear about a mission outside of the Land of Fire?"
"Stop calling me Toshi, my names is Satoshi dammit! And you wouldn't happen to be talking about the mission that I just handed out, would you?" A sly smile crossed Satoshi's face as they pointed to a brown headed man as he walked through the door exiting the mission office.
"Aww, but Toshi, I was looking forward to that mission. Come on, don't you have something for me?"
"You see that batch over here, D and C rank missions abound, pick any one you like and I'll sign off on it personally."
"Booo, that's boring. Come on, don't you have something interesting?"
"Take it or leave it Kushina. Take it or leave it."
They were interrupted when a messenger caught sight of them and hastily made his way over, handing Kushina a small paper note, even as he spoke. "Excuse me, Kushina ma'am, the Hokage is requesting your presence in his office as soon as possible."
"Understood, I'll be there in a bit. Toshi, this conversation is not over, I'll be back!"
Not even a minute later, she had arrived and the Hokage's smooth voice reached her.
"Ah, Kushina, it's good to see you. I'm sorry to interrupt your conversation with Satoshi but I needed to talk to you about something. You've been asking me for a while now when you're going to get a team of your own. Honestly, I didn't plan to give you one for a while yet, but something came up. Have you ever heard of Hiroshi Hyuga?"
Kushina threw that name around in her mind a few times before putting the name to the face.
"You mean the vaunted prodigy that has the Hyuga's strutting around puffed up like over preened peacock? And I mean like way more than usual too." Kushina's voice was disbelieving.
Hiruzen took a few puffs from his pipe before exhaling the smoke in a shape of a ring at Kushina. She had her face scrunched up, he knew that she hated the smell. The Hokage sighed.
"Though that's not quite how I'd put it, yes Kushina, that's the one I'm speaking of. You see, I've been going over the potential list of teachers for him and your name came up, along with that of Minato and Orochimaru. After some deliberation, I decided to give Hiroshi a choice and he picked you."
Kushina looked surprised.
"Oh, r-really? H-haha, the kid sure has taste, picking me over Minato and Orochimaru!"
While Kushina was laughing one could easily tell how awkward it was. Now she felt really pressured because the kid gave up chance to study under one of the Sannin for her.
"Don't be nervous Kushina, I have faith you. I'm sure that Hiroshi will turn into a great Leaf ninja under your tutelage."
"H-haha, t-totally, believe it!"

Kushina and Minato - After Test
"So, Minato, what do you think about those two?" Kushina probed as they were preparing to write their reports for Hokage's review.
"What about them?" Oh, that cheeky smile of his did things to her. A light dusting broke on her cheeks before she scowled to shoo it away.
"Did you notice anything weird or abnormal about Kakashi?"
"Like what?"
"I suppose you didn't notice since you paid more attention to your genin, but Hiroshi showed no signs of what we put him through. He didn't have a scratch on him. Which either means he's so skilled that he made me think that I hit him when I didn't or there's something more going on with him."
"Huh, I didn't notice that. Yet, I don't think we should dig much further into that. If they wanted us to know it they would've included it into his medical report alongside his other abnormalities."
"You're right."
Kushina paused to gather her thoughts.
"Do you think they're ready to be Ninja?" she probed Minato, a serious look tainting her face and her tone grave. Minato's cheery disposition seemed to slowly fade as a more thoughtful look stole across his face.
"They're small, they will have a massive disadvantage against enemy ninja due to their lack of strength, speed and their woefully short reach." Minato began as he started to hum, it always seemed to help him organize his thoughts.
"They're as ready as someone their age can possibly be. We both saw how they fought, it's astonishingly rare to see in Genin that are unblooded but the lack of hesitation was a massive point in their favor."
Minato paused to hum a little more.
"When they started to fight together… it was almost flawless, I have to admit that they have a great synergy. Even a chunin would probably struggle against them if they fought together. The only thing we can do to help them survive is to train them as hard as we can." Minato concluded with a frown marring his forehead. The massive undertaking that they were about to shoulder and the responsibility that was just dumped on them finally dawning on him entirely.
Minato was honestly a little scared but at the same time, he used that fear to galvanize himself to do better by himself and his now little apprentice.
He was right and she knew he was right, yet… she had to admit that she was a little reluctant to train them now that she had actually gotten to know them, instead of the hearsay from the villagers and more gossipy ninja.
They were children, they should've been out there in the park, playing ninja, not getting ready to become full fledged genin. Getting prepared to stain their hands and minds for the sake of the village.
Being a ninja was stressful for fully grown Jounin, how would those two handle it? Would they break like so many others did before them? Or would they excel in this blood soaked world? Honestly, Kushina wasn't sure which thought was more horrifying.
A warm hand suddenly slipped into hers and squeezed softly. Almost instinctively she moved to break that hand before she realized that she was home. She was safe. Another hand reassuringly squeezed her shoulder. She looked up into the eyes of her intended. The eyes staring back at her showed understanding and his smiling face was filled with compassion.
For a moment she wanted to sob but held it back stoically. If the war did this to her, a full fledged ninja and adult, she was terrified of what it will do to Hiroshi and Kakashi. Would Hiroshi smile at her and laugh at her antics as he had done today? Or would he become a stone faced killer, nothing but a tool to be pointed in the direction of Konoha's enemies?
Again, she didn't know which horrified her more.
And what about her and Minato, their future kids? Will the same fate await them? She pulled Minato closer to her and clung to his warmth. His hands started to glide through her hair, just the way she likes it, but something was off.
"Minato, dear?" she asked in the sweetest voice possible.
"Yes, Kushina?" there was a slight hesitation before he responded, something was definitely off.
"What did you do to my hair?" Minato's hand paused for a moment before resuming its work.
"I did no such thing." Kushina pushed him away just a little bit and looked into his eyes, his eyes refused to meet hers.
She reached out and gather her hair before bringing it before her eyes. She saw red, in more ways than one. It was shorter than she remembered it being in the morning. Who? When? How? And then something clicked. She grit her teeth and howled.
"HIROSHI HYUGA! YOU'RE DEAD!"

Kakashi's Thoughts
Kakashi opened the door to his apartment slowly. The image of a smiling older man with grey hair much like his own flashed through his mind, welcoming him home and asking him how his day was. When he blinked, he was again looking upon the body of the smiling man, a silver blade, the Hatake's famed chakra saber protruding proudly from his chest.
Kakashi shut his eyes and took a deep breath. He opened them again and looked inside his apartment. Nothing, there was no smiling man, just an empty apartment. Devoid of life, but not furniture. He took another deep breath before he walked in, heading towards his room.
Pushing the door open, he walked in and sat on his bed, worked his pouch off his leg and all his other ninja equipment. He set his pouch down next to three framed pictures on the dresser near his bed, the rest simply falling into a pile at the side of his bed.
The pictures were the only splash of color in his room. One was of him, a grumpy Uchiha and a smiling Hyuga. The picture was captured after they completed their survival test. The Hyuga's hands were wrapped around his and the Uchiha's neck, hanging from them like a demented animal, a horrifying smile plastered on his face that would stay with him for the rest of his life.
The next picture was taken right after he and Hiroshi passed the test to become Genin. Most of their class was there with them. All of them were smiling at the camera with Hiroshi and him standing in the center. Hiroshi holding two fingers up behind his head and grinning.
The last picture had four differing people on it. There was him, Hiroshi, Kushina and Minato, standing together. All of them were standing on top of the Hokage monument with the view of the village behind them.
Minato to the far left, standing tall. Kakashi standing proudly next to the right of him, ignoring Hiroshi who was attempting to put him in a headlock and Minato's hand which rested on his head. Kushina was to the far right beside Hiroshi, bending forward slightly as if to get a better look at the camera while one of her hands were darting towards Hiroshi's side.
Kakashi took another deep breath and went to the kitchen. He was about to grab some instant noodles to make before he heard a voice in his head, admonishing him for even thinking about it. Come to think of it, that voice sounded suspiciously like Hiroshi's.
After sighing hard enough for it to be audible, he went to the fridge instead and opened the door, looking inside he found one of the lunches Hiroshi was always bringing him and grabbed that instead.
After his dinner he took a shower and laid down in his bed. Kakashi turned on his side and looked towards the dresser. He gazed at the pictures. He fell asleep within minutes, a smile on his face.
The man didn't appear in his dreams that night.

Hizashi & Hiashi
Hizashi meandered into the room and sat at the table Hiashi was sitting at. Directly across from him. Hizashi took the teapot on the table when Hiashi didn't respond to his presence and poured the tea for both of them.
Hizashi took a moment to appreciate the aroma of the tea while preparing for the coming conversation, Hiashi seemingly did the same before each of them took a sip.
"What did you wish to talk about, Hizashi?"
Hiashi gazed at his twin brother, his brow twitched slightly when he saw the bandages wrapped around his head, hiding the seal on Hizashi's forehead.
"I wanted to talk about Hiroshi actually, I'm worried. I know that most of us agreed that keeping him restricted to the compound as much as possible was better for his own safety, but I think it's high time for us to rethink that policy."
"I see… well I share you concerns, I fear that us keeping him under such strict scrutiny is what led to him developing his… eccentricities. Besides, as he is now a full genin we can't keep him cooped up with us no matter how much we wish that we could."
"Then I'm glad we're in agreement. That was all I wanted to discuss. I'll see you at the next meeting Hiashi." Hizashi began rising from the table.
"Wait Hizashi, we're not finished." Hizashi halted midway as he was trying to get up, he frowned before he sat back down.
"Lately, you've been avoiding both me as much as possible. Brother, what's wrong?"
While Hiashi's face remained as impassive as ever, Hizashi could feel the note of worry in his brother's voice.
"Don't play dumb, brother, it doesn't suit you."
Hiashi visibly winced at the note of accusation in Hizashi's voice.
"I'm not playing dumb Hizashi, I sincerely wish to know what's wrong with you lately."
"What could possibly be wrong with me, brother? Perhaps it galls me that you became heir despite the fact that I won the fight for succession, just because elders did not agree with my ideals?" Hizashi swiped his arm fiercely as if batting away some bad memories.
"Was it because I was branded like a piece of cattle and the only thing I have to look forward to is that the same fate awaits my children?" Hizashi's fist bashed against the table hard to enough to rattle the finery upon it.
"Tell me, brother of mine, what could be wrong with me?" Hizashi finished, almost growling.
There was none of the famed Hyuga stoicism here, just two people arguing animatedly in a closed room, two differing ideals and people meeting to talk. Despite the fact that the two were of the same family and of the same father, if one were to walk into the room.
It would feel infinitely more like two kings sitting down and meeting to discuss a treaty, neither willing to back down or concede anything.
"I see… You are as stoic as ever brother, you never showed so much as a single motion or thought to the contrary. I understand that you are angry with me and the elders council." Angry would be understating it if the look Hizashi shot him was any indication when he mentioned it.
Hiashi sighed and continued on, "I do not claim that what happened to you was fair, but we were at war Hizashi, Hyuga could not afford the upheaval that your ideals would've brought."
"I know that as your elder brother I should've backed you, but that wasn't the right time." Hiashi's crossed his arms on the table.
"Your recent actions are worrying brother, forming a separate faction within the family, what are you thinking?" This time, Hiashi really did pound the table in a strange mirror of Hizashi.
"I don't think I'm the only one who needs to question his recent actions, brother. I avoid you because I don't wish to dirty your status among the other main branch members or lower my own among the side branch." Hizashi countered almost immediately.
"What enmity we have between us is our own business but what about Hiroshi, what about our little brother? He is innocent in all of this! And you're using your position as a clan head to prevent him from gaining support within the family? How could you!?" Hizashi pounded the table again, actually shouting at Hiashi.
"Hiroshi is innocent, yes. But do you have any idea power he could wield within the clan if I wasn't there to stop him? The Elders tend to automatically support him, almost unanimously in fact. Hell, he barely has to do anything, the elders would throw themselves on the ground simply so he didn't have to walk in mud!" Hiashi finished derisively.
"The main family's not any different, power is revered and he'll most likely be the most powerful person within the clan in a decade, if not earlier." Hiashi paused a took a deep breath to try and calm himself down, before continuing on.
"The side branch house is just the same, just because he shows sympathy towards them and has yet to use the seal a single time they almost revere the ground he walks upon."
Hiashi was panting hell he was gesticulating almost savagely too. Hizashi could tell this was something that Hiashi had been bottling up for a long time.
"Yes, I'm restraining his political power, because I'm afraid! I'm afraid that the fate that happened to you and your future children is the only thing that awaits me and mine should he grow into even half his potential political power!"
Silence reigned in the room, one panting almost like a dog and one wholly taken aback. Hizashi picked up his cup of tea and even though it was cold, he took a sip. Making deliberate eye contact again with his brother.
"He's out little brother." Hizashi spoke after Hiashi had gotten his breathing under control again.
"I know."
"It's really not fair to him."
"I know..."
"I miss the old days, when we were still children."
"Me too."
"Father lied, being an adult sucks."
"Agreed."

Omake
As Hizashi got up he noticed that his brother wasn't moving and his face was a bit red. After moment a smile appeared on his face.
"You sparred with Hiroshi didn't you?"
Hiashi's cheeks flushed with even more color and he refused to meet his brother's eyes.
"Where did he get you this time?"
"... the hip."
Hizashi sighted. Hiding from Hiroshi just how abnormal he is for most of his life, he never realized that unlike him other people can't just shrug off hits. So every time he hit, he hit hard, they had to rotate his opponents every day so that he won't notice all the bruises and swelling. The Hyuga became noticeably more stoic after Hiroshi started training, barely showing any signs of pain whenever they were hit.
"Can you stand up?"
"No."
"I'll call the medic." Hizashi sounded very commiserating.
"Thank you…" Hiashi sounded like angels had descended from above.
A.N
Uninspired: Ignore Golum, he's a filthy liar who lies. That is all.
Golum: It's all Uninspired fault. I'm innocent.
Uninspired: In all seriousness though, we do apologise for the… massive isn't really cutting is it? Uhh.. what's bigger than massive? Mind out of the gutter Golum. Well, anyway. We're sorry for the delay of over a year.
Between schedule clashes galore, finishing high school, dealing with the government and moving house on one end and working oneself to exhaustion, babysitting, training newbies and in general having not enough time on the other end.
We've not really been able to sit down and really work on the story for the longest time.
Never fear though, because we're back! Probably… maybe?
Golum: We're already working on the next chapter though, but whether it's going to come out this year or the next one… we've learned our lesson, never give dates again.
Uninspired: Yeah, we've hammered out a lot of the following story and we've hammered down a lot of the chaff we had floating around and ideas we wanted to use.
We spoke about it briefly, but we wanted to ask you guys. We've largely decided to completely forgo any form of japanese text and romanji in the story from here on out. We would however like to put it to a vote. Would you like us to use the word Sensei instead of Teacher?
We have both decided that we can't be bothered with suffixes anymore.
