Iron And Blood: A Flying Circus Quest!

[X] Get into a part that is dirty, so he won't want to touch it.
- [X] Ask him to bring us a left-handed monkey wrench, we're holding this in place so we can't move.
- [X] Hope he doesn't know that one.

[X] Bluff the guards with a plane inspection
13, so that's a partial.

You stride across the airstrip, and one of the long-coated Loyalty Bureau men, Nurse-Subaltern Beckett, raises his submachine gun. "Halt! What are you doing at the hangar at two in the damned morning?"
"Inspecting the planes, Subaltern. I'm under orders."
"Colonel's nervous, then. I've a little experience with diseases of the machine as well as the body, and we've a lot to get through tonight. Hans, keep your eyes peeled, I'll help the fähnrich with his the planes."
He turns and unlocks the first hanger's side door, then turns and prepares to go inside

[X] Play into it, check planes. See if anyone has left something behind that you could use, and try to lose the attention of the Subaltern.

#3: Kobra's Den
Total of 20!

The subaltern snaps to his feet. "Left-handed? What, are you some kind of Fischer? Do I need to check your racial purity, herr Garen?"
Involuntarily, your hands tighten around the engine. Your face is an iron plate, and a little sweat drips down you. "No, sir. That will be all right."
He slaps you on the back. "I joke! I joke! With that brow and those cheekbones, there's no doubt in your heritage. You couldn't be more Gothic if you were crowned Kaiser. I'll get you your wrench." He turns away, looking through the hangar's toolbox, then heading back out the door.

You're alone with the plane now. The moment of truth. You've wanted a Kobra of your own since the fighting-creche, and now, it's finally yours. You look one more time over her clean lines, her rounded nose, her v-struts. Your heart beats like artillery fire.

What do you do?

Also, to everyone following the thread, we're ok with me doing the rolling? Nobody else wants to roll?

Double-also, for those with the book, she's a Kobra MD. For those without, she's well-armed (two machine guns, an additional high-mounted LMG, and a gunsight, which means she shreds at close range,) and pretty zippy (3 boost, where 2 is standard) but turns slowly relative to other planes of her general class (you'll be eating a -1 Agility penalty on dogfights against most other scouts. She's not a bomber or anything, she can still dogfight, but she prefers to fight with a nice speed advantage)

#4: Kicking Off
The hangar door slides open grudgingly, groaning in protest. You hear the Bureau men start to come running, shouting and waving their guns. They round the corner and enter the hangar.
"HALT!"
You throw your shoulder into the propeller, and the engine hums to life. A bullet smashes through your leg. You scramble into the cockpit, plane ploughing forward. Gunfire rakes your Kobra's canvas as you taxi, and you see the base windows light up as you speed away, blood pooling in your cockpit. Finally you kick up, air under your wings again, and for the last time you look back on Festung 808-Sigvird. It's a clear night ahead, and the light of the moons and stars gives you just barely enough to see the forest below by. They'll be after you, but for now you're free and clear.

WHAT NOW?
[] Speed away, and head....
[] North, directly out of the Occupied Territories. (6 segment Long Haul. A very long way, and it'll be touch and go with your fuel supply. Conversely, you won't have to worry about getting attacked.
[] to Bad Jungfer, a "town" that's mostly a few bars for soldiers a short way away, for medical treatment and supplies. (2 segment Long Haul, then 5 segments out.)
[] to Bernbroich, a farming town a moderate distance away. It's been plagued by partisans lately, so maybe they can help you, but they'll be on high alert. (3 segment Long Haul, 4 segments to leave)
[] to Marienstein, the last Goth town before enemy territory. Full of communist infiltrators and Loyalty Bureau men. (4 segment Long Haul, then 2 segments to leave.)
[] Double back, try to engage your pursuers for an easier flight out
[] Try to find a good hiding spot in the Wild to hole up for the night
[] Write in.....

Garen is on 1 Injury. His Kobra is on full fuel, 6 Toughness out of max 10, and 1 RPM out of max 7. Not bad shape, all things considered.

@Houndmoon , thank so much for sharing your writing! This looks like it's going be a very interesting quest, a can't wait see where it goes!
Now…

We've got a high hard stat, a collimated gun sight, a hole in our leg. I think it's time to start off a career of killing Goths with a bang:

[X] Double back, try to engage your pursuers for an easier flight out

[X] Double back, try to engage your pursuers for an easier flight out
I'm voting for this for a different reason. We're too merciful, and we'll never have a better chance of taking them out on the runway. Better there, or just off the ground, than in the air and after us.

#5: I didn't think this was going to be this long
this was meant to be a quick question before the update, I'll flip a coin if nobody replies in an hour or so:
[] Stay at Altitude 5. After your run, you'll be down at Altitude 2, pretty much flying on the deck, and they'll be able to climb above you if you don't climb to follow them. Your attacks will be at a base range of Knife since these guys are on the ground, so you'll be putting all 12 Hits into them provided I roll decently on Open Fire.
[] Climb to Altitude 10 before attacking. After your run, you'll be at Altitude 7, so still comfortably with the energy advantage in any ensuing combat. Your attacks will only be at Close Range, so you'll only get 9 Hits on each target.

Furthermore, would you like to Rapid Fire? It'll improve your odds of a hit (advantage on Open Fire,) but you'll be nearly out of ammo when you pull up, especially if there's multiple aircraft.

If nobody suggests otherwise, I'll assume you're going to use your talent and Draw a Bead on the biggest-looking plane for Time On Target and Clustered Shots.

Let's go low. The Kobra can climb fast, and if we hurt them enough, they may not be able to follow.

[X] Rapid Fire up to a point. We should reserve at least 4 ammo, just in case. So the number depends on how many there are.

@Tetragramm I love his plan, am excited be a part of it!

You'll attack at +3 Hard, +1 Gunsight, -1 Injury. Good luck, Garen.

#6: An Overture To Make A Career On!
You wheel around and dive, wind stinging your face, engine protesting at the brutal speed. Two light monoplanes, with the unmistakeable silhouette of a Kobra between them. Easy prey. You breathe deep of petrol fumes - see and visualize the entire battlefield - allow yourself to ignore the light of tracers surrounding you - and exhale. A single, perfect motion. One squeeze for the first monoplane, tearing canvas and snapping wire. One squeeze for the kobra, which lurches hard to the right, forcing its wingman to swerve on the beaten-earth runway, bleeding out black oil that turns to licking flame. One last squeeze for the other monoplane, and you know the shot is good. A propeller blade skitters across the airfield. You scarcely even notice the bullet which tears through the underside of your cockpit, punching out mere inches from your face, nor any of its cousins which tear up your aircraft, nor the grinding whine of your engine's overworked cylinders. You see the ground rushing to meet you and pull hard on the stick, slamming back in your seat but finally levelling out of the dive.

YOUR PLANE:
Altitude 2, Speed 29 (Overspeed!)
Toughness 0, Max Strain 22
2 RPM

YOU:
1 Injury
1 G-Force (will go away if you level out)
1 Kill

WHAT NOW?
[] Climb, regain the energy advantage!
[] Climb 1 Altitude. Speed 20, so you'll be going pretty fast, but only Altitude 3.
[] Climb 2 Altitude and Boost. Speed 18, +1 RPM, Altitude 4
[] Climb 3 Altitude and Boost. Speed 13, +1 RPM, Altitude 5.
[] Climb 4 and you get the dea. Speed 8 (dangerously close to stalling out!,) +1 RPM, but you'll be above them at Altitude 6
[] Turn back, and engage them as they climb! Don't let the pressure off! (Dogfight +Hard, but with worse handling, your wounds, and the G you pulled, you'll be rolling flat.) Specify if you want to Commit to the Turn, and how far you're willing to go - just avoid failures, avoid partials, or turn failures into full hits?
[] Ride your speed away into the night. They won't be able to catch you going this fast. You'll go down to speed 25.

Woo! @Houndmoon you do darn fine action scenes!

Ok, 2 out of 3 ain't bad (1 monoplane down, and the Kobra is on fire)! Unless I'm mistaken, that means we have would 1 (hurt) monoplane that would be in a position to pursue us, and I'll take those odds.

[x] Get while the gettin's good!
- [x] Ride your speed away into the night. They won't be able to catch you going this fast. You'll go down to speed 25.
