In The Dust Of The Earth (Quest, Apocalypse)

[X] a non-commissioned officer. [+supplies, +1 Leadership, +1 DP]

[X] ask him how he's feeling.

Why is 911 so useless when the apocalypse is happening.

[X] just another soldier. [+3 DP]
[X] ask him how he's feeling.

[X] get him something to eat. Something light; he's still sick.

We, as players, are genre savvy enough to know what is likely to happen if we get near him, but our dear protagonist has no idea what is going on.
I feel that them getting Sammy some food, or taking his hand are the more in character responses considering we upped their closeness with Sammy.

edit: also, the answer to 'how are you feeling?' is probably going to be: 'hungry.'

Yeah it's nice to be pragmatic but we also don't know not to be a decent person. All we know is that our friend is sick (and hungry!) and somebody is screaming. It's unnerving but our MC doesn't know the name of the thread. :p

One of the options in the second set will go much better than the others.

Bit of a tough one- all of that delicious dp would be great, and would probably help out down the road when we run into something unexpected, but we've mostly been neglecting the supply end of things(of course, I'm as much to blame as anyone else, but kitties). NCO really looks like the best bet. Though I suppose that it depends on what, exactly, our rank was- above a certain point might give us some political connections- which might or might not be useless, depending on how bad the coming apocalypse is(we're probably smack dab in the mile of it all, but I've seen different works in the genre have the government do anything from "be overwhelmed precisely long enough for the plot to happen before rallying" to "immediately collapse, do not pass go, do position your head within easy reach of zombies").
[X] get him something to eat. Something light; he's still sick-
Seems like the best response, IC- I know that my own reaction to a close friend/family member being sick is to take care of them as well a I can, and even my blasted and shredded belief in humanity is still enough to make me assume that I am far from the only one to do so.

[] get him something to eat. Something light; he's still sick.

A smile tugs at the corner of your mouth despite the tense situation. Hungry? You can fix that.

Wormwood rejoins you when you come out of Sammy's room again, and he hops up to lounge on the table while you pry open a can of soup. It's chicken noodle, of course, and though it's not homemade, you figure even canned chicken noodle is good for you.

(The screaming hasn't stopped. Fuck.)

You head back into his room with a bowl of warm - not hot, he's still sick - chicken noodle soup and a spoon.

"Wise," he whines uncharacteristically, reaching out for the bowl of soup. When you give it to him, he manages to pull himself into a sitting position, bowl in hand. The spoon clatters to the floor, clattering loudly on the tile, as he upends the bowl and slurps the soup up. You stare, not quite believing your eyes, as he devours the contents of the entire bowl, occasionally stopping to chew a piece of chicken. The noodles get swallowed whole.

Sammy leans back, bowl in his lap. This time, when he opens his eyes, he's a little more lucid.

"Wise..." he focuses on you tiredly, most of his body limp. "Why is there screaming?"

You shake your head. "I don't know."

"Cops...?" He asks, eyelids dropping a little. (You retrieve the bowl of soup. It's more empty than not, but there's enough broth at the bottom that it'll make a mess if he drops it, or tips it in his lap.)

"I called." You say, then purse your lips. "911 is busy."

"Busy..." Sammy frowns, eyes closing completely and head lolling against the wall. "911 shouldn't be... busy...."

You watch him drift off. Your palm against his forehead reveals he's less painfully hot than before, but still not in the healthy range. You'd want to bring him to the doctor, only if 911 is busy, you don't think the hospitals will be much better.

The screaming from across the street tapers off. It's replaced by screaming from your neighbor's house. Shit. You can't just sit here while something's going on. You have to:

[x] secure your house. All the doors locked, all the windows closed. Stay out of sight; who knows what the hell is happening.
[] arm up and head outside. Grab your tomahawk, your gun, and keep an eye out while you do it.
[] stay with Sammy. He's in and out of consciousness, and if the state of his room is any indication, he's not always entirely in control of himself when he's awake.

What, can zombiness be prevented as long as the victims are taken care of a bit at the start? If so, that would be awesome.

It might not be zombies. It might be uncontrollable magical-mishaps caused by a magic awakening disease that just happens to result in zombies.

Edit: I think each choice will define (to some extent) how we are likely to react to events.
Securing the place might influence us to act more defensively and maybe more tactically. Rushing out has us being somewhat impulsive and quick to react. Caring for Sammy is being kind and helping our friend/s.

If it's magical: Chicken soup has been cemented in human consciousness as a cure-all when you're sick. Belief is a powerful thing, so it might be staving it off.

If it's chemical: The preserves they put in canned food is some serious shit.

If it's zombies: He wants human flesh. Flesh=meat. All meat tastes like chicken. Chicken is a viable substitute for human flesh.

It shouldn't take too long, unless if the GM forgot to mention that we live in a mansion. Rushing out means leaving a close friend, who is incredibly sick, alone while in the middle of... something, which is completely unacceptable, while staying with him without locking up goes against the paranoia present in all good roleplayers and soldiers.

Also, it just occurred to me that Sammy might not actually have the zombie virus/spell or a portal to hell in his spleen or whatever is going on- he might just have some sort of bad fever, an we're all chumps for going all "oh shit, zombie".

Wait a minute- how well do we know this neighbor?

It's also possible that with a little care he'll survive the disease and not zombify, assuming it's some variant on viral zombies...
