Don't need the cat if we have another person with us. [] throw on your backpack, making sure to secure the straps. It's a damned good backpack; featherlight when it's empty, with a bunch of hooks and pockets and storage space.
The Foot traveler's suitcase.
Good starter bag, but apparently isn't super durable. The bottom isn't reinforced, so it's liable to wear out in a while. Bad if you're depending on it to survive the apocalypse. [] check your belt for your multi-tool. You know it's probably still there, but it makes you feel better to check.

These aren't sold super commonly, so we can't pick them up later. It'll also last for a while. The only issue is tires, and if we've got the pump we're set for a white. If the tires totally wears out, we can steal more from stores.

The house shouldn't be silent. Yet, it is.
You venture further inside, dropping your pizza box on the kitchen counter. It can go in the fridge later, after you're done finding out exactly why the house is quiet. Wormwood sticks close to you for once, not darting off to make sure the house hasn't changed, and that worries you more than anything. He's mellow - he has to be, he's a service cat - so for him to be on edge, something is seriously wrong.
The house is done in all tile, from the front door right through to the back door. The walls are just one shade off of the tile, and papered with washable wallpaper. It's a rented house, and you suspect the owner was trying to make it as easy to clean up between tenants as possible. The plastic shades and stone countertops support that theory, as does the utter lack of any trees in the yard. You've been here a few years, so you've probably blown the poor guy's mind as to his expectation of renters.
The tap of your boots echoes off of the tile and walls. You'd never noticed before - your house is never quiet enough to tell - but it's eerie. Lonely.
You knock on Sammy's door. No response. You knock again. A low moan from the other side. You pause, then call out, "Sammy?"
You get a whisper of your name in return.
[] Write-in for name, or a nickname your roommate would call you Jordan, but he calls you Wisely
That's enough to have you easing open the door, poking your head in.
Sammy looks awful. Ashen, sweating, tangled in his sheets, his eyes screwed shut and one leg hanging limply off the bed. The place is a mess, too; it looks like a wild animal rooted around in here. You haven't been in his room often, but you know he's an organized kind of person. You:
[x] step in, hold the back of your hand to his forehead to assess his fever. [+closeness to Sammy]
[] call out from the door, see if he responds. [no change]
[] close the door, call him in sick from work, and wait a few hours to see how he is. [-closeness]
[] Jordan, but he calls you Wisely
[] step in, hold the back of your hand to his forehead to assess his fever.
You move further into his room, side-stepping his overturned wooden dresser. One hand pressed against the back of his forehead reveals he's burning hot, skin slick with fever sweat. You frown and head back into the kitchen to get a cool cloth and some asprin that he'll hopefully be able to take. After all:

Wormwood trots at your side, a quiet brown-black mass of cat. He hasn't made a sound since you got here, and he stood on the threshold of Sammy's room while you were checking on him. His reaction just makes you more on edge; Wormwood really likes Sammy, and always cuddles him when he's having a bad day.
Speaking of Wormwood, you have him because:
[] you're suffering from severe PTSD, and having him with you is the only thing that calms you down some days.
[] you need a sense of purpose or you fall into black depressions that you can't pull yourself out of.
[] you have trouble relating to other human beings, but still need social contact besides Sammy.
[x] he used to be your mother's cat, and you got him when she died last year.
You fuss about in the kitchen a little, wetting a dishrag with cold water. Then, you make a stop in your shared bathroom, pulling some asprin out of the medicine cabinet. Neither of you get sick very often, but a house isn't a home without a standard set of asprin and calcium tablets, you think. (And the rest of the standard half-forgotten, stashed-away expired prescriptions nobody remembers to finish or check.)
When you've gotten the asprin, you close the mirror-cabinet, and catch sight of your reflection.
[] Insert (small) picture of yourself here. This is optional.
Huh. You've definitely looked better. The weather has been getting to you, you guess.

Edit: The reason why more options for people at the house would be worse is because they would all be sick with this thing, isn't it.

We have an incoming zombie apocalypse, don't we? Fuck.
(I'm holding out hope it's something closer to The Last Centurion - no zombies, just society mostly-collapsing on account of the sheer number of people that die to a super-virus)

I wasn't originally planning on taking the uppermost option, but I suppose it's the most optimal one for a zombie apocalypse.
