Ah, no, I meant 'it sounds like the knife was embedded in her back as if someone had stabbed it there', versus 'it deployed from the shoulder pylon where it is stored, or came from a backpack or such'. Not any sort of body-image thing.

Eh, denial is a thing. And it's healthier than how Asuka copes.I find it hilarious that Shinji draws the line at Rei being a clone. The giant cyborg being used to combat space kaiju with an Electra complex ok. An embryonic fluid that retards aging and makes a person ageless why not.
To be fair, she's doing far better than she could be, and has in a lot of other Eva-universes. There are far, far worse coping means. Look at Misato's 'Alcohol and avoidance' method, for one.
