You don't know his reasons for leaving you and you don't know if your imagination can fully recreate what it must have been like for your father. But you'd like to give him the benefit of a doubt and say 'it must have been hard for him to do'. Since it seems like your father wants to be a part of your life now, you'll do your best to not be awkward.
