Announcement: "What's in a Name?"
Announcement: "What's in a Name?"

What's in a story title?

Let's talk about titles. Any story needs a good title. Something that catches the reader's attention, yet broadcasts the themes of the story.

What does "Closed Circle" mean in the context of Closed Circle: A Girl's Frontline Quest?

It could refer to Sangvis Ferri as a whole, after the Butterfly Incident. An insular, militaristic group of androids, closed off from the rest of the world by mutual hostility, besieged from all sides, dependent on their wits and their cunning to survive as Griffin & Kryuger harries them and larger threats lie in wait to pounce.

It could refer to our protagonist's name. Ouroboros, the snake devouring its own tail, forming a symbol of infinity.

It could refer to her circumstances of origin. The never-ending chess games, played against herself for her very existence.

It could refer to Ouroboros' own self-destructive thought processes, her tendency to figuratively as well as literally be her own worst enemy, which caused her own downfall in canon.

And, by extension, the question of whether she can break out of those tendencies in this AU. Will she unlearn her old habits and learn to survive in this brave new world? Or will she fall prey to her insecurities and cause her own downfall, as in the canon timeline?

All these possibilities…

Are utterly freaking rubbish.

I mean, seriously, "Closed Circle?" What a booooooooring name. That's never going to get anyone's attention! Bleh.

This quest needs a new, better title! One that will simultaneously communicate what the story is all about, while grabbing the attention of prospective readers in seconds!

Henceforth, the title of this quest will be…

I Was a Chess AI Forced to Battle Myself to the Death for Eternity, but Now I've Been Recruited Into the Android War Against Humanity?!

Flawless. Truly, this new title will be remembered as my masterpiece.

(Also actual update coming later today.)

Skills
  • Offensive Tactics
    • Seizing a position from the enemy...and doing so with minimal losses. Maneuver, surprise, concentration of force, and setting of the tempo.
  • Defensive Tactics
    • Retaining decisive terrain, denying vital areas to the enemy, and attriting away their forces. Preparation in advance, disruption of enemy forces, operations in depth, and use of mobile reserves.
  • Artillery Tactics
    • Using long-range, (typically) indirect fire support as a force multiplier. Disruption of enemy forces, denial of potential bases of fire, support of friendly operations, or just bombing them to smithereens from afar.
  • CQC
    • Combat at knife-fighting ranges.
    • Comes into play when you are personally engaging at close range with your main body or dummy links.
    • Applies to fighting with infantry in room-clearing operations and some urban warfare situations.
  • Recon
    • Gaining knowledge of geography, terrain, roads and routes, enemy assets, and enemy activity. Can involve stealthy and passive scouting, and/or aggressive probing attacks to force the enemy to show their hand. Stealth is associated with the Recon skill.
  • Engineering
    • Construction and demolition actions to facilitate movement of friendly forces and inhibit that of the enemy. Construction of fortifications (foxholes, trenches, minefields etc).
    • Tinkering with, and modification of, standard-issue equipment (weapons, dolls, etc).

Mechasaurian's thoughts on "My Devil's Frontline: Dropkick on my PMC"
Out of curiosity, what with the latest event in GFL focusing on Ouroboros and some of her past, do you have any intention of integrating some of that into this quest proper?
I was going to need to explain my position vis-a-vis My Devil's Frontline: Dropkick on my PMC at some point. Might as well do it now.

Firstly, I'll explain my personal relationship with the Jashin-chan collaboration event. This was all the way back in August of last year. I had spent about a month making notes for Closed Circle - what it was supposed to be, what themes it would touch on, the possible directions it could go based on voter input, any mechanics, etc.

And then, out of the blue, the official GFL discord server dropped a fan translation of a CN collab event in which Ouroboros was the star.

I read it. I was surprised about how thematically similar it was to what I had in mind for Closed Circle. An examination of Ouroboros as a person, an investigation of her origins, and a posing of the question of whether and how Ouroboros could change and grow. But I took some issue with how it went about it.

For one thing, the entire premise is Ouro and three GK dolls being isekai portaled into the setting of a gag-a-day comic strip. This raises the issue of whether the events of the collab are canon to the main story proper, and whether it will be acknowledged in any way. So far, the only collab event that has ben acknowledged by other material is the DJMax event ("Glory Day") - I think it was Calico/M950's mod story that mentioned El Clear and El Fail. But that story was much easier to reconcile with the GFL setting, since it involved the GK dolls stumbling into an old server bank filled with AIs. The fact that My Devil's Frontline has the S09 commander find out where Ouro and the GD dolls have gone because he watches the Jashin-chan anime and they show up there seems one among many signals we're not supposed to take the collab too seriously.

But...well...if the events of the Jashin-chan collab "never happened," then that means there is setup for Ouroboros regarding her origins, but no payoff. Unless future, non-silly events/chapters mention Ouro, she simply remains forever in Persica's computer, forced to run battle simulations again and again, as seen in Cube+.

(Also, regarding what My Devil's Frontline is crossing GFL with - I read just enough of the actual Jashin-chan manga to know that I didn't care for the kind of humour it's going for at all.)

There's another very big issue I have. Namely, the Jashin-chan collab retcons the nature of the battle simulations that made Ouroboros into the neurotic fruitcake we know and love. In Operation Cube, Ouro bragged to Hunter about defeating other AIs in "thousands of chess matches." Now, the chess thing is actually thematically important to Ouro's negative character arc in Operation Cube. It ties right in with the fact that Ouroboros thinks of and treats Hunter and Executioner as things, as resources to be expended. Which ultimately proves to be her downfall.

The Jashin-chan collab, despite pitching itself as something of a sequel to Cube and Cube Plus, and referencing both (it explicitly refers to Hunter's protestations that "War is not chess!"), it completely retcons the nature of Ouro's simulations. Instead of chess, it's now...PUBG.

Like, literally a PUBG-style Battle Royale game. 1000-AI Battle Royale game in which the AIs club (and possibly shoot) each other to death in a video game environment. Ouro's final battle in there is a purely melee affair.

And I'm sitting here with my notes for Closed Circle in hand and I'm thinking: really?

On another note:

While I think the writers got Ouroboros mostly correct personality-wise (though I think they might have softened her somewhat for the sake of the story), it's worth nothing that the Ouroboros of My Devil's Frontline and Closed Circle are in quite different places, emotionally speaking. Closed Circle Ouroboros just got out her hell-simulation and is feeling ready to take on the entire world. Devil's Frontline Ouroboros is years ahead in the timeline and, as anyone who has played the games knows, some stuff has happened in the meantime. Jashin-chan collab Ouro does seem...a bit more depressive. Just an aside.

Now, finally to actually get to your question:

Out of curiosity, what with the latest event in GFL focusing on Ouroboros and some of her past, do you have any intention of integrating some of that into this quest proper?

...maybe. :V

Obviously I'm not retconning Ouro's hell-simulation, even if MICA did. Ouro was made to play chess - that's important to me and it's important to Closed Circle, so it's not changing.

But let's be real. We both know you're asking about Jormungandr, and whether she will show up in Closed Circle. And my answer to that is a solid...

...maybe. :V

Like I said, my plans for Closed Circle's identity and possible paths was made before that particular character ever existed to me.

So, when I finished reading the fan translation of My Devil's Frontline, I simply went ahead and posted the first chapter of Closed Circle as planned a few days later. My Devil's Frontline released on the GFL EN server about a month later.

For me, one thing that really made me want to write Closed Circle is getting to see Ouroboros interact with and bounce off other SF ringleaders. As well as a general exploration of Sangvis Ferri's inner workings and what they do when they're not getting blown to pieces by the AR team and S09 commander. I won't make any definitive statements, but I'd have to find a place for Jormungandr in the quest's story before including her. Which isn't impossible - stories grow and evolve in the telling, especially quests - but I won't make any promises.

So...yeah!

The Skill system
So what was the probability of getting two failures in a row? I have no idea what sort of dice is being rolled, nor how much a skill level of "1" influences the roll, nor what is a good or bad result.
I believe I explained this a while back, but failed to put a comprehensive starting explainer on the front page of this quest. Something else for me to fix.

So:

This quest, so far, does not operate via dice rolls. It operates on narrative logic.

I didn't roll dice to determine whether or not Ouroboros crashes into the patrol. It was:

  1. There are military patrols in the woods. Intruder told Ouroboros about these patrols.
  2. Ouroboros (influenced by the voters) chose to go into the woods.
  3. Ouroboros (influenced by the voters) chose to charge straight for the checkpoint.
  4. Ouroboros, character wise, does not know how to properly recon ahead of her main force (Recon skill level: 0).
  5. Therefore, Ouroboros blunders into one of the military patrols (which Intruder told her about).
  6. Ouroboros' forces have a significant numbers advantage, which helps. But with [Offensive Tactics skill level: 0], Ouro doesn't really know how to efficiently press this advantage.
  7. Therefore, Ouro's forces are bogged down in a firefight.
That said, this kind of foul-up on Ouro's part was not inevitable. The voters could have chosen a different set of options, with different outcomes. The voters themselves can influence what Ouro's general strategy is even if Ouro herself is...not quite the tactical genius she likes to think she is. :V

As for skill levels: think of them as like skill checks from Fallout: New Vegas. You either have the necessary skill level, or you don't. There are no dice being rolled. Praying to RNGeesus will not help you here.

The exact impact of a given skill level will be context sensitive and ultimately determined by me, the QM.

There are some guidelines I intend to operate within. The jump from '0' to '1' is arguably the biggest, since it raises Ouro to "functional if somewhat basic" in a given proficiency. Each level after that involves an ever increasing degree of skill and effectiveness.
If assaulting a fortified location (such as a set of foxholes and a machine gun nest)...
  • Offensive tactics level 0: Ouro throws bodies at the problem until it goes away. She will probably fail unless she has a truly ridiculous numbers advantage, and even that will come at great cost.
  • Offensive tactics level 1: Ouro has the proficency to do some basic fire-and-maneuver, and takes the position with losses.
  • Offensive tactics level 2: Ouro has the expertise to take the position with minimal losses.
  • Offensive tactics level 3: Ammunition is virtually Ouro's only expenditure in taking the position.
  • Note: This is something of a spherical-cow-in-a-vacuum scenario. Other factors - like the size of Ouro's forces - can affect the outcome, and in turn be affected by interactions with other ringleaders.

But wait - there's more!

Skill level weaknesses (such as Recon: 0) can be covered with the right choices. Some sets of choices in the last update would have resulted in Ouro not blundering into the patrol quite as hard, or even avoiding the patrol area entirely.

Or, returning to the "assault a maching gun nest" scenario from earlier - with Artillery Tactics Level 1 and a mortar requisitioned thanks to earlier choices, Ouroboros could substitute for her lack of small unit tactics by simply bombing the enemy position with shells, then running her units right over the half-destroyed, shell-shocked position.

TL; DR:
  • Determined by narrative and the QM, not by dice.
  • Higher skill levels = better. Raise Ouro's skill levels for more options and better outcomes.
  • Strength in one skill can cover for weakness in another. Multiple skills can synergize for a greater impact.
  • To get the best outcome, try to play to Ouro's strengths and cover for her weaknesses.

Ultimately, it may help to view the skill system as existing for a sense of character progression, rather than for strict simulationist gameplay.

And it's run on QM fiat because the alternative was doing the legwork to overhaul an entirely new mechanical system that fits the tone, themes, and intent of the quest. :V

Thank you for raising your questions, @Briefvoice. They were fair ones. I welcome more requests for clarification from anyone.

Girls' Frontline Cutscene Interpreter (read GFL's story without playing the game)
Oh yeah, if people want to familiarise themselves with canon without, uh, having to play through the game itself (plus there's a bunch of event story content that isn't accessible in-game currently), there are third-party tools.

Specifically, here: Girls' Frontline Cutscene Interpreter

The QM messed up the numbers
*sigh*

Okay. I messed up. Let's set things straight.

This is what Ouroboros went into the op with Intruder with:

24x Dinergate
3x Striker
3x Jaeger
6x Ripper
6x Guard
12x Brute

This is what Ouroboros emerged from the op with Intruder with:

11x Dinergate
3x Striker
1x Jaeger
4x Ripper
4x Guard (2x damaged)
4x Brute

These are the damaged and destroyed units which Ouroboros managed to salvage. She got the luxury of being able to collect every single piece of scrap. Note she may not always have that luxury.

13x Dinergate
2x Jaeger
2x Ripper
2x Guard
8x Brute
Assorted obsolescent WW3-era Dolls

This is what I've gone with as the repaired and refurbished units. Basically, between assorted battlefield salvage and Architect's help, she managed to restore about half of what she lost, give or take a little. Note that this is borne of ideal conditions for salvage and refurbishment - Ouro had the time to collect every last bit of scrap without anyone shooting at her, and she had help from Architect and her artisanal workshop with 3D printers and machine tools. Future conditions may not be so permissive.

7x Dinergate
1x Jaeger
1x Ripper
1x Guard

2x Brute

Which brings us to:

[CURRENT FORCE CONTINGENT]
18x Dinergate

3x Striker

5x Ripper

2x Jaeger

5x Guard

6x Brute

The force contingent in the update proper has been updated accordingly (though I had to work around the 50 image limit a bit).

I have decided not to restart the voting phase, because IMO the initial numbers were not that far off, and because I've seen some neat force comps and I'd hate to see them thrown away because of my mistake.

I invite the thread to continue voting.

Recommendation: "Architect's Workshop" (Sangvis Ferri design quest by Solark)
Friends, Sangvis, Ringleaders, lend me your ears!

There's been a lot of discussion going on in this quest thread, which I am very happy about.

A fair amount has revolved around ideas regarding the tweaking, customising, or wholesale from-scratch design and engineering, of gear to aid Ouroboros and Sangvis Ferri. For example, the long running thread of customising the Brute Dolls.

This is...not entirely, but mostly, out of the scope of this quest. I don't really picture Ouroboros as sitting in a workshop dreaming up design and engineering projects and putting them into action. Ouroboros herself wouldn't want that - she wants to be at the sharp end of things, mixing it up in direct combat. Doing some techie stuff is not out of the question - the Engineering skill is there for a reason - but it's a thing in this quest as I envision it, not the thing, and probably more focused on battlefield stuff.

However, I do have a a recommendation to make for those of you who hunger to aid Sangvis Ferri in design, prototyping, and the creation of new tools for the Ringleaders!

Presenting...Architect's Workshop! A quest featuring the titular Ringleader SPzH3000 Architect, in which she does her best to solve the myriad problems of the Mastermind's army and officers through the power of prototyping! By @Solark, a long running voter in this very quest.

The characterisation of all the Ringleaders in Architect's Workshop is on point so far. If you want more Sangvis Ferri-centric stuff, go read it. Also Solark is really showing me up with the update schedule thus far. 😖
