I Used To Be The Demon Lord

Aw, I guess it just wouldn't fit into a lighthearted quest like this.

Even if sometimes, being a Demon Lord is kind of like being an evil shounen protagonist, so long as you believe in yourself everything is within your grasp. But the moment you let doubt enter your heart, the second you think "Maybe, I was wrong." you have already lost. It does not matter how great the strength of your arm or the might of your magic, for you have already opened yourself to the Hero's most insidious of weapons, compassion.

No, to win as a villain you must be without guilt, however ironic it may seem. So walk this path with no regrets! Laughing, to the very bitter end! And when the hand of Fate itself drives the Hero's hate honed blade into your heart, when your lifeblood spills upon the ashen remains of his friends, when the world grows dim within your failing sight, look him in the eye for one last time and tell him...Tell him! "It doesn't matter. It was fun."

After all what's the point of saving a world of ashes and dust?

Edit: Ninjaed?!

:V "It doesn't matter. It was fun."

The best video game ending. Bar none.

It also help that the entirety of the demon path was an hilarious trainwreck.

Basically, yes. They're either random or people who fit the bill.
And, no, they get no benefits.

Wouldn't they need to be fairly powerful to be chosen? Or it's on them to get strong enough not to be murderized in the minutes after revealing themselves to the world?

Generally, the people who get the Villain Roles are the ones who start the Main Quest.

Like, say, selling their souls to a demon to get powers unimaginable to destroy the world. Or something.

The World, which is always watching, goes "Hey, this is interesting, let's make this a Quest!" and starts grabbing random people for the job (assuming some spots aren't already taken).

As a whole, nobody usually cares about the Quest System because it lets ordinary people become Heroes and evil-doers to be as evil as they want. The problem is that the World can get bored. Like, say, having too much Heroes winning or not enough Villains (or vice versa, which is rarer), then it starts forcing people into a Main Quest.

That's basically what happened to Malice Ein. Just an ordinary girl who was forced to become the Demon Lord during a time when Heroes were on a winning streak. By the end, she became of the most infamous Demon Lords in history, having killed Heroes and Villains alike, and basically reducing both sides to nothing.

Ah... With all the demon lords running around, I thought being the reincarnation of one wasn't that big of a deal, but it seems our previous life wasn't just any demon lord. (I find it funny that even if Malice didn't want to become the Demon Lord, she proved herself to be so good at it)

That aside, the quest system doesn't sound as bad as it did at first... Sure inconvenient when the world fail to regulate itself, obviously, though.

They're pretty much guaranteed to die off, and then we can sell the book for mad dosh.

The role of the chronicler make me think of the Black Company's annalist.

Who know, maybe we will manage to survive two TPK only to rebound again and eventually complete the quest. (That said, I really don't want this quest to be Black Company-inspired, because holy shit every one can and will die pitifully).

It's actually one of my favorite novel, and I actually greatly enjoyed the way the author dared to have important characters die in anti-climatic ways. Nevertheless, the named characters death count is staggering. Most of the characters in the company by the end of the ten book only joined after what... book eight or nine? (Unfortunately, it's been a long time since I read it) Save for the Lady. At least, a few of the characters you were the most emotionally invested in ended in fitting ways like killing a god. (Others... not so much)
