Hyrule Warriors

Hmm. I apparently misunderstood.
She wasn't 'a rejected crossbow training character', she was 'a rejected character that was a reference to crossbow training'.
My mistake.
Actually, as far as I can tell, the artbook she sources from makes no mention of Crossbow Training at all.
Claiming that is entirely you speculating based off her using a crossbow.

Linkle was in the Hyrule Warriors artbook as "girl version of hero Link" (勇者のリンクの女の子版) called "Linkle" (リンクル or "Rinkuru" in Japanese). Do you have a source for her as a rejected crossbow training character?
I totally dig her design as a female link, stupid name not withstanding, but she doesn't really strike me as a Female Link. It's unfortunate because a female Link is a concept I can totally get behind, but the fact that she's using a pair of crossbows instead of the Master Sword kind of ruins the feel of her for me for me. Throughout the entire franchise Link has always had individual quirks that sets that iteration apart from the others, time traveling, transforming into a wolf, controlling the seasons and what have you, but being a swordsman is a constant, and I feel like a Female Link should wield a sword, and indeed, be worthy of wielding the Master Sword when the time comes to use it.

That said, since Hyrule Warriors isn't a Zelda game in the strictest sense, I'd like to assume that she's only using the twin crossbows to set her apart from the other characters and hopefully we'll get a true Zelda game with a female Link (or the option for one anyway).

If 'female elven archer' wasn't such a huge archetype, you might have started to have a point.

...ignoring the different poses, weapons, and clothing.
Pretty damn similar. Green tunic, blonde hair in braids, thighhigh boots with some zettai ryouiki between it and the brown short shorts, short brown gloves with bare arms.

That's not a tunic. That's a green hoodie with a white undershirt.

Maybe she'll get it as a separate weapon? From what they showed it looks like she has some story content. It looked too elaborate to be part of her pre-fight thing.

Speaking personally, I would've preferred Linkle to have something other than crossbows because I can't stand Lianshi.

Still, at least she's not Naotora.

She isn't female Link though, she's Link's sister.

I think that it's cool that she still has a spin attack, in the form of some kind of spin attack.

She might get an alternative weapon, but not every character does. Link himself gets a pile, Lana gets three, while Zelda and Impa have two. Other characters only have a single weapon.

Zelda has three. Rapier, Wind Waker, and Rod of Dominion.
(Admittedly, she only had two initially.)

She isn't female Link though, she's Link's sister.
Where is this information from?

I'd imagine many potential backgrounds and origins for Linkle, from sister, daughter, cousin, other, something in between, or something else entirely. She could also just be an alternate timeline counterpart for Link before Link found the Master Sword, as Hyrule Warriors does seem to play with a multiple universe and continuity crossover concept.

I smell... PLAGARISM!

Pretty damn similar. Green tunic, blonde hair in braids, thighhigh boots with some zettai ryouiki between it and the brown short shorts, short brown gloves with bare arms.

There is some difference in the outfits. The upper body for Linkle is a white shirt with a green hooded cloak jacket over it.
Linkle's cloak reminds me of a few designs of Little Red Riding Hood.

The elf (not sure where she's from) seems to be wearing a flared green blouse or dress (skintight at the top and loose at the bottom), with a much longer, looser cloak that makes it look more like a cape.

Linkle also isn't sleeveless. Her white shirt appears to have very short sleeves. You can see some poking out from under her right arm as her cloak is shorter. The white shirt also appears to be relatively low cut. The elf's green outfit doesn't have shown details of the top as the massive cloak dominates most of her upper body, and even some of her torso and middle.
The elf's cloak is longer and looser, so she could also have sleeves for her green outfit and a possible undershirt under her cape but it doesn't appear she has sleeves from what we can see.

Their boots are similar but brown boots seem common, and Linkle's seems to have hers based off of some of Link's boots designs.
Linkle's boots also have a solid, perhaps metal ring near the top. Not sure what that is. Perhaps someone knowledgeable of shoe, boot fashion can tell us or maybe its a medieval design a historian would be better suited to explain. I think trailers show that her crossbows might attach to that ring.
The elf's boots have rope straps to help secure them to her leg's so they don't fall off. The elf's boots appear to be less stiff and solid then Linkle's, and less armored, but easier to move in as they appear less thick and heavy. As seen by the top of the elf's boots, as folded them appear to be thin fabric. Or the folded portion might be a hem for the boots made from separate material. It doesn't appear to be though, as the color is uniform throughout the whole boot, except for the top edge of the folded hem, and the soles.
The elf's boot's soles also are distinctly colored to draw attention to them, unlike Linkle's.

They're both have other similarities like hair style, but common hairstyles used in games don't have that much variation.
Pigtails with braids are a common style, similar to ponytails, and simple loose hanging hair from the back, or brushed to either side.
Those appear to be the most popular options for long and medium length, symmetrical hair.
Sidecuts and mohawks seem rarer.

With short hair of varying length being used for bob cuts, pixie cuts, or pageboy cuts.

There's also differences within the haircuts. Linkle's braids are tied with long, brightly colored hair tie ribbons. The elf's braids appear to be tied by hair looped back around and bound, so the elf is using her own hair as her hair ties.

Linkle also appears to have a compass and necklace for some reason.

Linkle appears to be wearing spats under her shorts or skirt. Perhaps its a skort.
The elf is wear shorts folded over on themselves once, or perhaps shorts with a hem design.

Both have differently designed belts too. Linkle's belt appears to be holding up her shorts.
The elf's belt appears to be holding her quiver.

Both are wearing medium thickness brown gloves.
That is a somewhat common trait in fiction for warriors and people in general, and breaks up a boring color pattern.
Though from my experiences with archery, those gloves might make it difficult to notch an arrow or fire.
I think a wrist guard might be a good addition to each of their designs since they are both dealing with bows, as well as adding a little color and something interesting to look at for that portion of their costume. Though it might make the design look too cluttered.

If Linkle is confirmed to be Link's younder sister who has decided to join her brother in the fight against evil, then I am renaming her Arryl in my mind and no one can stop me! I mean I get why Linkle is her name, she is based on the 'Female Link' concept art (and is probably the default name for Fem Link if gender selection is possible in future main games), but Wind Waker Link has a sister with similar enough hair to Linkle. Than there is the whole '-ul' sound both Linkle and Arryl have at the end of their names, it'snot that crazy a change.

I actually tried my hand at translating the Japanese phrase used to describe Linkle, and it literally, not figuratively, reads as 'female version of the hero Link.' If she ends up as his little sister you can probably blame it on Nintendo of America :V

And now I get to mourn my siblings managing to lose me the discs for both Sm4sh and Hyrule Warriors again.
And it's nigh-on impossible to find a replacement Hyrule Warriors where I live nowdays.

Oh hells yeah even more new characters.

Come on, Nabooru! Malon! Telma! You can do iiiit! (Groose is in, guaranteed.)

Well, I grabbed Legends. I transferred the characters to WiiU and immediately went to town.

LINKLE IS AN UNSTOPPABLE BADASS WITH THE COOLEST MOVES AND BEST COMBO POTENTIAL EVER.

Skull Kid is cool too. Will try Tetra next.

The 3DS version of the game runs pretty poorly on the Old 3DS hardware. Although it's in a weird camp where I'm like "This is not running well" and "HOLY CRAP I CAN'T BELIEVE IT CAN ACTUALLY DO THIS." at the same time.

Seriously I look at games like Final Fantasy Explorers that have a quarter of the graphical pizzaz and shake my head now.
