I don't know why I imagined Treeko or the others on Lotad, using them as a surfboard. I just did.

Pastra the Noodle Chef?

The flying ban might have something to do with the podpeople vampires pale faced imposters taking place of young Pokémon trainers, performers, musicians, noodle chefs, other hard working humans, government officials like the Pokemon Champion, and various other positions of power. Other regions probably fear an outbreak of these sun challenged individuals infiltrating their lands, and as such, imposed quarantine mandated travel bans on flying.

The person next to you may not be who you think..

They took yer' jobs!

They want to socialize region owned land for the protection of Pokémon. Damn Hippies.

Turns out Astra was infiltrating a region that has already been completely taken over by several million mutually excusive psychic pokemon, all of whom are desperatly trying to maintain their cover from each other.

Obviously, because all psychics have a complete inability to detect psychics of a different species from themselves. Everyone knows this.

There are days I lament my lack of access to the Picard emote.

Well, while everyone is coming in for no reason I might as well say that I broke 7.5k today.

Progress is slow, I can't seem to do more than a paragraph per day sometimes. Also doubting the quality of the writing, but I got the first half beta'd and they said it was fine so w/e.

Same shit as always, I suppose.

This is good news!

Didn't you like my post when I made it? You clearly read it then; why are you choosing to reply to it a week later?

I like attention as much (No, it's actually much, much more) than the next guy, but this seems to be akin to 'bumping for the sake of subtly asking for an update' than actual discussion. I know that sort of thing isn't strictly 'illegal' on SV, but it still gets on my nerves a bit, you know? Especially when you've done it twice.

It will come out when it comes out [I broke 8k btw shit's gon be long]. Either find something to talk about (I in fact heavily encourage this), or... well, I don't appreciate empty posting, is all I'm saying.

Will Astra ever train herself to break out of pokeballs? I assume she could train her Pokémon to release her if she catches herself.

I'm not quite certain how anyone could train themselves to get bread out of pokeballs. Unless there's some new pastry pokemon I've missed in my collective ignorance of gen 4-8?

:V

As far as your actual question goes, the current mindstate of Astra toward pokeballs aimed in her direction is a hearty 'fuck no'.

One reason of many would be because Professor Birch more or less told Astra that any Pokemon that she catches adds to the repository of data at his lab.

This would include herself.

Perhaps not a good idea.

I think the only way for a Pokeball to actually hit her would be a) accidental mis-throw by another trainer or b) her disguise fails and somebody tries to battle her for capture. The first scenario, that would be pretty awkward afterwards but she'd be able to break out, right? In the second scenario, well... she has her own Pokemon to help. And May as well, hopefully. Unless things have gone very very wrong.

Actually, Pokemon are entirely capable of telling their trainer to fuck off if the trainer doesn't meet their standards, and I'm willing to be Astra would have some very high standards, and probably also some friends to rescue her.

It would be in Astra's best interest to befriend Birch and May. If i were her i would rather capture myself than risk my cover later. This has a prerequisite of being in Birch's good graces, but that would be a good thing anyway so she doesn't loose anythting either way.

Edit: Lanette too. Just in case. But pokemaniacs(is she a pokemaniac like bill???) are a bit unpredictable though.

But she has only met Birch once, and May she has only known for about 2 weeks, she should train with her powers before doing something she can't take back.

Well... these are things she should do.

However, I doubt she will do any of those, considering that she still believes her disguise will keep her safe until the end.

I'm not sure why people thought May's reaction to Steven was out of line. To me, it just read as good instincts. I mean, I'm sure he's not supposed to be evil, but that's only for meta reasons. The narrative tried really hard to hammer home that he was a bad guy, using the empath to clearly establish how everything about him was uncomfortable and wrong.

Perhaps, but when a shady character confronts you, the best option is usually not to challenge him to a Pokemon battle simply because he's a trainer and continue to antagonize him after he demolishes you with the first 'Mon in his lineup. Even if it wasn't unwarranted, which is debatable, it was unwise.

As for the empath part, we don't know why Astra had that reaction. Keep in mind that she has no experience with anyone quite as intense as Steven. In the GBA games, Steven is described as having trained his Pokemon to "terrifying extremes", which says something about his character.

How about that new mechanic huh? (Adventures with Dynamaxing.)
How about that new mechanic huh

Astra stared down at May, squinting.

May craned her head upward, mouth agape.

Silence reigned.

"You know-" Astra started. She stopped, watching the trees shake.

"You know," she continued, much quieter. "I really liked that dress."

"What the fuck!?" May screamed.

Or, at least, Astra thought she did. It was a little hard to hear her.

"Could you speak up?" she asked. "I can't hear you from down there."

"Speak up!? I'll speak up as loud as you fucking want as soon as I crawl into your massive, cavernous ears, CARVE MY WAY THROUGH A RIVER OF WAX, AND HOLLER DIRECTLY INTO YOUR EAR DRUM."

"I really don't get why you're so upset, I'm the one who needs to find new clothes after this."

"Oh, what!? Am I supposed to be fucking calm when my best friend becomes the plot of a kaiju movie!? YOU'RE TALLER THAN A SKYSCRAPER."

It was true. Astra looked up and over the horizon. Forests and lakes spread themselves haphazardly in front of her. In the distance majestic, snow capped mountains rose to pierce the sky, and she saw a grand city sprawl across the plains to the north. All of it looked much smaller than about thirty seconds ago.

"I'm not even sure how this happened." she admitted.

"I dunno," May yelled, somehow still sarcastic at over a hundred decibels. "Maybe it was the giant fuckoff red laser thing!?"

"Maybe."

She took a few tentative steps forward. Trees were swept aside by the brush of her coat, the winds howled with her every breath, the earth rumbled and quaked at her passing, and a series of small ponds formed where she once trod.

She stopped.

"... I'd like to go back to normal now."

"Oi you cunt!"

Astra turned around very slowly. In the clearing where she once stood, a new girl was walking up to May. She was dressed in magenta and grey, a green cap with a white puff covering her brown hair.

"The fuck did you just call me!?"

"Och what's got a bee in your bonnet? Jus' wanted to ken if ye were gonna 'ave a go at the big shite over there!"

Astra mouthed the words 'big shite' to herself as May got more incensed.

"Wh- hell no! Why would I want to do something like that?"

"Bah! Well if yer no' gonna be of any help, I'll just take it myself then! Ne'er seen a beastie like that before, I'll be the talk of the town once I catch it!"

"Catch- oh no you fucking won't!"

*Thwack*

"Augh! Wha' was that for you fuckin' cunt!? You wanna have a go!?"

"You're damn right I do!" May roared, and then slugged the girl in the jaw.

Astra watched the scuffle with pained resignation. Even in Galar, May could not stop picking fights.

Abruptly, she felt a prick in her back. Turning around again, she spotted four unknown trainers lined up in a row a short distance away. Their pokemon were all focused on her, eyes gleaming hungrily.

"... I miss Hoenn."

I wrote this in half an hour.

I'm fairly certain that Astra is speaking to people entirely through telepathy at the current point in the main timeline, so given that Future Astra can make the land shake when communicating that implies she eventually will learn to speak English. Good to know.

This is pretty obviously Scottish Pokemon Trainer (Elsie Lovelock is one of many people to play with this), which as far as I'm concerned as somebody with almost no knowledge or particular interest in Pokemon (outside of this story, anyway) is the best thing to happen to Pokemon since Twitch had their radical experiment in democracy and came out the other end with a new religion.

It's really starting to become impossible to avoid Sword & Shield spoilers.
I have no idea what was going on (and will happily leave it that way until I actually play the games), but the chapter was fairly amusing nonetheless.
