"So, what exactly are we going to be walking into?" You ask. "Doesn't seem to be much in that area" The map you see just has major cities and highways. The area has pretty much nothing near it. No roads, no other cities. Just... nothing.
"I'm glad you asked" Kachuusha says. "We're going to be going to Traveler, Texas. It's a small town, less than a hundred people. It's surrounded by a lot of other small towns, but there probably isn't a Hero or two dozen police officers between them" She says. As for what's around there..." She takes out another map from beneath the state map she had already.
It's a satellite image, probably taken from Google Earth. The area around Traveler is flat, mostly grassy. There's a road that has a few buildings on it. You can't tell what they are, but you guess that they're stores, maybe a police station, or something. The rest of Traveler is made up of single houses with swaths of farmland. But... you notice something. You aren't an expert on farms, you've mostly passed by farms on your way to and from visiting family, but things don't look right. There's too few crops on the amount of land on each property, even if they were practicing crop rotation.
Other than that, you see an electrical substation to the south, several water reservoirs throughout the town, along with what looks like a slurry pit... and a small airfield to the northern tip of the town. Sure, the runway was made of dirt but the hanger was huge and better built than even a lot of the other buildings in the town.
"From what I've been able to tell, there are some small time gun runners and drug distributors. that have been operating out of here for years. They mostly just sell small arms, the occasional weaponized vehicle for aspiring villains. But apparently, they're trying to expand."
"By stealing the aircraft from an Air Force Base" You say. "I guess it's a way to raise capital, but that's risky, and a lot of things could go wrong." In fact, this is a military aircraft. The army should probably be handling this. Hell, even knowing about where this is and not telling them could get them in trouble. Legally, you're pretty sure you aren't required to let the government know about things like this, but it doesn't exactly look good.
"Yeah, but they're doing it anyway." Kachuusha says. Then, she flashes a grin "Or at least, they're trying to. And since this is really risky, they're probably gonna bring as many people as they can to protect the jet, but I don't know how many people they're bringing. Still, there's only about 60 or so people in the town. They can't have that many men." She says. "What I'm worried about is who Ordinance is sending."
"Who is she sending?" You ask.
Kachuusha furrows her brow. For the first time, you can see frustration in her eyes. "We don't know. We know that Ordinance wants to make sure that this sale goes through, but we don't know who she's sending. That's why I wanted to bring you. No matter what people throw at you, you always seem to survive, so I know you'll be able to handle whoever they send. Besides, you managed to fight Artillery and you didn't even take a scratch!"
"I suppose that's true" You say. Granted, that was more luck than anything. A Barrier flaring up to become a Reflect. But still, you've been building yourself into being a Stone Wall. "So, are we bringing anyone else?"
"Of course! We need to get the plane out of there. If only to stash it somewhere for the military to find. I can't teleport something that big. But great news, I just happen to know a former pilot. Have you heard of Morphic?"
You shake your head. You haven't heard of him before. You assume he was a Vigilante, but not one you've ever heard of.
"He has the power to copy substances that he touches. Rock metal, things like that, as long as it's solid. He used to be a Vigilante and more importantly, he knows how to pilot jets. He says he can get the plane to a safe place so it can be picked up later."
You nod. "So, when is this going to happen?" You ask
"In a week Meet me at the Hardford Executive Airport. I'll get you from there"
She looks at you for a few seconds after you shake her hand. "Hey, did we get it?"
"Yeah, we got it!" An unfamiliar voice says. You turn around and see a woman holding a large camera. She gives Kachuusha a thumbs up.
"FUCK!" You shout. "How long have you been there?!"
"Since you came down the ladder. C.A. probably got some footage of you driving, walking or whatevering up. I hope you don't mind" The camera girl says, in a neutral voice. Kachuusha rubs the back of her head, clearly embarrassed.
"Sorry. I get so used to my crew, sometimes I forget some people aren't expecting them to be there." She says, you can see her blushing a little.
You're about to say it's alright, but then you realize that the camera girl was filming. "Wait, were we streaming? Was all of that live?" You ask, worried.
Kachuusha's eyes widen. "What? No!" "Things like that, we upload later! A bonus for Patrons after we're already kicked the bad guy's butts. Sure, we'll start streaming when we're about to attack, but we would never upload something like this."
"Again" The camera girl says in a flat voice.
Kachuusha glares at the camera girl for a few seconds, an annoyed look on her face. But soon, her expression breaks out in a smile and she chuckles slightly. "Right, again. Anyway, there's aweek until we have to get moving, so if you could, please thinking about getting something new to use then. Something that you haven't done before if you can. A new weapon, spell, armor, or maybe even a logo on your shield. Something that can really stand out on camera."
"You know, speaking of cameras, I've been watching your streams and I don't think I've seen them take as much as a stray bullet. I gotta say, that's impressive."
"Thanks" Kachuusha says with a smile. "Though I I'll admit, my crew does a lot of the work on that front"
"Yeah, we edit out the parts where people die and dump the dead camera guys in the lake." The camera girl suddenly says in her same flat tone. When you look at her, she starts to crack a smile.
"R, stop it." Kachuusha says playfully before turning to you. "I don't know what I'd do without them."
"Thing is, I was wondering how you do that." You say. "I mean, they charge into a fight with just a camera and they manage to not get killed. How do you guys manage it?"
"Well, part of it is wardrobe and powers" Kachuusha says, gesturing to herself. "Between the lights and the colors, it helps keep eyes on me and importantly, off if the crew" She says, giving a pose. "But there are a few things I do to make their lives easier. If you want, I can give you a few tricks I use"
"But if you want me to give you a few tips, I can help you out." Kachuusha says.
You're about to accept the offer, when R pulls out her phone and looks at the time. Looking up, she says. "Kachuusha, it's almost 1"
Kachuusha's eyes widen. "Shoot, you're right. Sorry, Vigil. I have a stream tomorrow-"
"Later today" R says.
"-later today and we need to get ready. Breaking up a dog fighting ring in Arcadia. I hope you understand. Remember, Hartford Executive Airport, south gate." She teleports away suddenly and you see a flash underneath a door further down the hall. In a second, she's back and she gives you a card. "Show that to the guard and he'll let you in. Remember, one week. Half past 1800"
Kachuusha grabs R and they both disappear in a flash of light, leaving you alone in the boat.
---------------------------------------
You're riding back to your own neck of the woods later that night. Even when you avoid major roads, you occasionally see cars pass you by. but they ignore you
"So, what do you think of all this?" You ask Jasmine as you ride back home.
"Well, most of what Kachuusha said was legit. A few days ago, a jet went missing from an Air Force Base. The military isn't commenting, and you can barely get any info on it, but rumor is, it was a soldier that stole it"
"Well, if he was, and they know who he is, I assume he won't be a soldier for much longer" You say. "Do you think we might end up fighting them? The person who nabbed the jet, I mean"
"Maybe" Jasmine says. "But depending on what skillset the person had, they might want to keep them away from the deal, if they aren't a fighter or a talker. He might be burned from the military, but he might try and steal something else."
You nod. "True. Though I have a feeling that whoever Ordinance is sending will be the biggest threat there whether the thief is there or not. Do we have any idea who she might be sending?"
There was a pause as Jasmine pulled a window up. "There isn't really much info on Ordinance's inner circle" She says. "A few of them have records, so we know their powers. There's Ballistic who has Telekinesis, Battery can apparently enhance weapons while he's wielding them, Stamper's your basic brute with strength and toughness. But we don't know know how many more people she has, or even if she has any more people."
"So, we need to get ready for anything." You say. You start thinking about how best to prepare.
