Hefusts Explores the Inner Sphere

Uh. Rebel? Is that some kind of relic from before Hefustian independence?

probably, remember they have to use exosuits to function on other planets due to their atrophied bodies. Actually that would make BA really appealing to them. We might be able to get something really valuable out of them if we help teach them how to make some.

They have a 400KG PAL/EXO suit. We haven't seen a 700KG or more Battle Armor suit from them yet. Thats significant because PAL/Exos cannot mount more than 2 points of armor. True that doesn't mean they can't make them...but if they could why wouldn't they?

Well, they actually do. The "Rebel Mining Exoskeleton" is heavy battle armor. I'm not sure exactly what doctrinal role it has given the loadout...perhaps gruesomely annihilating offworlder infantry who venture into Hefustian buildings or tunnels? But it's there.

As for why their marine armor is PAL? It's marine armor that presumably predates anybody else having power armor. So it's intended to fight at most conventional-infantry space marines, for which triple AP weapon mounts and a couple points of armor will do quite a bit, plus provide generous space mobility.

Huh, interesting to note that while Nukashuba doesn't have them, apparently LAC/2s have a long history in Papolris.
I love the ER Flamer on a Turret!

Coaxial Plasma Vent's are A Man's Romance!
A lot of Hefustian flamer installations (common on ASF) seem dubious, but I have no complaints at all about that one! Probably not going to make space to bring any though? I guess we could have a small craft tank carrier so that if we ever need to deploy marines they can have a ride...

Hefusts' forces are likely better equipped and trained for boarding operations than any in the inner sphere. That's how they got the Obelisk after all. They should definitely plan on doing more of them.

I'll have a plan entered in after work. Maybe two hours? I don't hate the current one, I just like the CIC more than the RSU.

My vote wants to be tweaked with some kind of passenger space which I haven't figured out yet, though something will happen inside the deadline there.

EDIT: I did an update. IDK if it's enough, those cabins are heavy. (7 tons for enlisted-grade, 10 tons for officer.) So I've been thinking of it as 13 cabins per 100 tons (3 nice ones, 10 not so nice).

I do too, but this post seemed to convey that going with CIC could significantly increase the risk of not getting satisfactory mechs out of it.

Prologue (3/3)
Setting forth

Acting Special Senior Commodore Henry Harrison walked onto the boarding ramp of the Suzerain with a sense of trepidation. The rows of BattleMechs to either side of him loomed enormously. The one formally assigned to him - as he did need to clearly belong to the Inner Sphere's knight-like MechWarrior social class - was already inside. If he had been simply taking command of the Suzerain, he would have been nervous enough. The ten thousand ton vessel was the only battleship in the Hefustian fleet, even if it was lightly armed for its size, and it had been fitted with extensive command facilities fit for an admiral and his staff. It also had space for six of the new style of light starfighters, twenty-four BattleMechs, twelve hundred tons of cargo space, and twenty passenger cabins.

The Divine Bench and Mallet were already in place to escort the orbiting Obelisk, which had been fitted with another twenty passenger cabins. The Divine Bench's BattleMech bays had been replaced with half a dozen old-style heavy aerospace berths, suitable for old-style starfighters or shuttles, but kept the eight principal light starfighter bays.

The trouble was that the secret of Hefusts launching an expedition wasn't very secret anymore - not that it could have been kept secret once the Obelisk started heading for a jump point. Perhaps it was a deliberate back-channel leak made for diplomatic purposes; perhaps the Ribbon Sea Union engineers working on producing the Banshee deduced one too many things from the urgency of Hefustian requests for the first batch of promised machines. Henry Harrison didn't know. What he did know is that his secret orders were to jump early, at Nuzhup's L1 point. The political risks associated with jumping at the expected Herald L2 point, or the "standard" nadir / zenith points now known to the Nukashubans, were too high.

The biggest indicator that the leak came through the Banshee project was the fact that the Ribbon Sea Union was the first to make a secretive request to come along on the expedition; they had a ship loaded and ready with a K-F boom; a destroyer-sized Leopard captured on the expedition to Dorman's World. Their close allies, the United States of North Nudezret, had a cruiser-sized Union they'd gotten on the same expedition. Everyone else wanted space aboard Hefustian ships, but the only ones that would get it were the ones who rendezvoused early and hastily with the Obelisk as it slung past Nudezret.

Dorman's World was a logical stop, and everyone seemed to know that, too. The Cretuans wanted to send a delegation to Dorman's World to reinforce their stranded detachment aboard the Prize of Cretu, which was too big to be shipped home and too valuable to abandon. The Union of Christian Socialist Republics also wanted to deploy additional support and technical personnel to Dorman's World, a hasty assemblage of personnel aboard a trio of shuttles; the Nukashubans had been stingy with their allotments.

Even those not keenly interested in Dorman's World wanted to send at least a few passengers.

The Confederacy of Independent Cities had assembled a collection of "scientists" - probably also spies. The People's Republic of South Nudezret wanted to send a diplomatic delegation along, an envoy with a dozen attaches well-grounded in Coxian doctrine. Nova Slake wanted to send an Elder of the Church with three of his wives and, if possible, several assistants. The Holy Empire of Xanadu and Sacred Republic of Xanadu each wanted to send official delegations as well, and urgently requested that the "false Xanadu" be barred from traveling along. Brighamistan wanted to send a team of missionaries, of all things. A favored younger relative of the Khan of Thriva and entourage.

Both East and West Numexinova wanted to send a token emissary along, more by way of establishing recognition by Hefusts than by way of accomplishing anything. And there had been literally hundreds of private requests for passage to the Inner Sphere from thrillseekers, scientists, monks, and probably spies, from North District to the Democratic Republic of the South Polar Region. And whatever the diplomatically-worded response had been, the only way they would come along is if they were scooped up in a sneaky rendezvous while the Obelisk boosted its way past Nudezret.

Features the following design quirks: Rugged (1 Point), Bad Reputation (Inner Sphere)

Why is there a CASE in the right torso with nothing explodable on that whole side?

Hmm. Bad Reputation IS is going to be regrettable. Is it worth driving a 95 ton monster anyway? My impression is that driving the biggest mech isn't mandatory as an IS status symbol...

Hmm. Bringing the northerners doesn't cost us any resources but it'll likely make a lot of bother for the whole exercise, they're not just freight. (And I don't think we could take only the RSU without actively snubbing the USNN, which seems like a bad idea. Just a thought because we've never really gotten personal with the RSU in any of our threads so far.)

Giving the UCSR some shuttle space to Dorman's World would be nice in a way but would also cost us bay space that we may really want for our own combat or utility small craft.

Of course, Hefusts can use whatever diplomatic credit we can earn them here...

What Cretu probably really needs from us is a lift home for the Prize, but we're not going to go out and come straight back.

Yes, we could definitely do without the PRSN diplomat.

...Where are the guns? I mean yeah, it's a Stealth Charger (that sadly can't turn invisible, which would turn it into max hilarity) that wants to judo chop whatever it's fighting to collapse the cockpit for salvage, but...

I admit to a yearning for the Tripod, but we don't have access to one. In that case, the Hefustian Ettin seems to do the same job so the Banshees can be used as an armored fist to literally overrun enemy positions.

Banshees are like that. But really, a PPC plus an AC/5 is a non-trivial amount of gun. Not for a more typical slow 95 ton mech, sure, but there are certainly a number of mechs with the same speed as the Banshee and less long-range firepower.

It lacks short range firepower. Against small targets, it makes up for that with hilarious melee power. Against other assault mechs, it probably wants to keep the range open and snipe from behind its massive stealth armor.

Only problem with grabbing the Ettin is that if we do we really have to send the commodore along on any force deployment, because it'd be a tragedy to not field the Battle Computer.

Yes, we could definitely do without the PRSN diplomat.

Not a diplomat, a Diplomatic delegation with a dozen attaches. Add the OG banshee deserves its bad reputation. There isn't an Assault mech that doesn't outgun it other than the charger, and the charger is faster so it can close to punching distance and beat it to death with its bare hands and small lasers and the Banshee could do little but try and stop it. This one at least has stealth, but its still not going to do well against an assault or heavy mech that is better armed than it by like double the damage?, and it doesn't have the F off close range firepower to prevent lighter mechs from running under its weapons other than melee, which requires having initiative to use.
