Gundam Crucible - [An AU Universal Century Quest]

Wow, is that a Gaplant-style Methuss? I had no idea that was a thing, but what a slick looking MS it is. I'm so proud of you, Mort! Now just don't job this next mission and maybe we'll learn your last name! Woo!

You know his last name. It's Mallory.

And yeah, the reference image is of the X-2, the second Methuss prototype, envisioned as a hit-and-run ship-killer. It took inspiration from the Gaplant.
However, given that Mort's is cobbled together out of production models, his Methuss enjoys the perks of the improved production version, like a higher reactor output.
Also, his beam sabers are also beam guns. The X-2 didn't have Beam Guns, just the Mega Particle Cannons.

Fuck yeah fresh update!

I'm happy we got Mort out of that death trap, though I am kinda disappointed that Sicilia isn't riding shotgun with us. I hope that isn't permanent.

Aside from that I am hyped for some more mecha carnage, lets go!

I was just making fun of the poor guy. And dang but I can't wait to see it in action. Would have been nice to trash some ships with it but there's a decent chance that Alexandria has an i-field like the Wolf's previous ride.

I'm still chortling about how badly that damn cruiser got thrashed.

"But that's beside the point. What I meant is that your teamwork is good. You're one of three teams who managed to disable my BWS, and of them you were the fastest."

"Who were the other two?" Sicilia asks.

"Alex Team and Shezarr Team."
Just pointing out we're like, the second best team, maybe even the best team, being supported by the third best team. In an organization like Londo Bell, that's really saying something for just how dangerous our unit is. And that's before we factor in our frankly ridiculous suits.
"As you may have heard, Londo Bell has signed a non-aggression pact with the Republic of Zeon." Bright begins, "Talks have begun to finalize an official alliance, but until then we'll be unofficially working together. This will be the first joint operation between us and them, so I must stress that you are representing all of us. Don't do anything that would put us in a bad light."
Keep this in mind for later.
"You will leave Londenion with the Argama in two days." The screen displayed both ships entering high orbit, and another ship incoming from outside the Earth Sphere, "Your mission is to intercept and make contact with this unknown vessel and ascertain their allegiance. If they are hostile, you are to engage them in combat to gauge their strength. If they are friendly, you'll guide them to a safe location, protecting them from any hostile forces that may attempt to stop you. A Zeon Republic warship will rendezvous with you at the mission site and provide support."
Again, keep all this in mind.
"Ensign," she says, eyebrow twitching, "Would you care to explain why you had this trash pile delivered to my ship?"

"Oh, that's easy." You smile as you continue directing Sicilia to pull another Methuss out of the collection, "I'm making Mort a new Mobile Suit. We're getting him out of that old GM III."
"…What am I looking at?" Mort asks, thoroughly miffed as you and the rest of the team present the complete (albeit a bit skeletal-looking) MS to him.
I would like to point out Cybele, Eris, Theo and Sicilia built a Mobile Suit out of scrap in like what, three hours? And did a very good job of it. They're not just ridiculous pilots, they're plain ridiculous
You stare at the ceiling of your room, hugging your Amuro pillow to try and get your mind off of the absolutely devastated and disgusted look on Mort's face when you broke the news and he acted like you'd just taken one of your own family members off of life support so you could use the power outlet to charge your phone.

He… He took that well… yeah.

"…Am I that insensitive?" You mutter to yourself.
For a Newtype? Yeah, it's actually impressive how bad you screw things like this up.
"Yep!" She giggles in response, "My cockpit is all big, nice, and cozy! Rhea gave me pillows!"
Sicilia clearly knows a way to bribe Rhea that we don't.
From the Bellerophon's central bay, the massive repaired Mobile Armor from Axis emerges, clad in a brand-new paint job and made fully functional through Rhea's tireless efforts. It visually looks the same, but under the hood it's a whole new beast.
Our team has gotten a very solid boost in firepower. Mort's still the weak link, but if he keep's with upgrading, calibrating and picking the correct configurations he can be some very nasty support, and that's saying something given how nasty the support Team Alex can give us is. He'll just be behind here because this is a new, much more complicated machine. It's still better in every way then his GM III and he's got experience with better suits, but he's never piloted this thing. Trail by fire it is.
"Sicilia, Lord Frith, here I go!"
Meanwhile this thing should be everything the original engineering and design team dreamed it could be and more now. For example, it can shoot it's main gun! And not blow up! Amazing! And it's I-fields can take more then a few hits, it should be an able frontline and support MA.

Not to mention all the new toys Alex team brought with them.

Oh, and the Woundwart is probably still possessed. I don't know if that'll help or hurt, but it's a thing.

On the tatical side, our side has 12 units deployed. Mckenzie has her team, we've got ours. Cybele and Mort are in MA mode and Sicilia is just in a big MA. Theo and Eris are in a Gundam like and a Gundam. We aren't lacking for firepower or speed. And if we hold the Zeon team to what they said, we can count on them and take some risks.

That said, splitting up is not a good risk. If we all hit the carrier we could take it out pretty easy and drive off the Federation suits. But if the Jupitris is hostile, we're pretty fucked once they deploy and attack. And this is more then a simple recon mission, as noted above, this is part of feeling out an alliance. If we take risks here, they need to be smart ones. We don't know enough to know which tack to take yet.

[X] Splitting the teams is a bad idea. You're sticking to the plan.

Ensign Mort Mallory
Formerly a pilot with the Island Cascadia Defense Force. You saved his ass during the attack on your colony. Now he's a trusted and reliable member of Cascadia Team. You got him a shiny new Methuss to replace his older, shitty GM III.
Fun fact! His name means "Death Unlucky". Despite this, he is the sole surviving Mobile Suit Pilot from the ICDF.
Having read this, I get a real kick out of him piloting an MS explicitly made out of old battlefield salvage. Nobody probably had to be scraped out of the cockpit before he climbed in, but most of the suits his was made out of snapped in half at the least, and a good chunk of former pilots did not get out of those suits alive.

That said, Cybele wasn't kidding when she was talking about all the configurations it has, one of which is even a dedicated undersea fighter. Unlikely to come up, but if it does we have options. Plus as Eris noted, it's basically a prototype Zeta, meaning it definitely has a lot of room to grow with all the modern technology available to us.

I've got a question for this thread. I been wondering if we have any particular long term goals for Cybele to achieve? I'm pretty sure we want to avenge our bro. But is there anything else you guys have been thinking about?

There was that interlude about nobility a few updates ago, is that a possibility? Do we even want that?

Getting more Woundwart parts, configurations and equipment would be fun, and doing the same for the rest of team's mobile suits. Mort's suit in particular could get very wacky with it's loadout, and if he can handle it all that would probably make him the most versatile pilot in Londo Belle.

Continuing therapy for herself, Sicilia and her mother is important to. She should also be on the lookout for future careers prospects or she'll die in the cockpit. Fortunately she has lots of long term options with Londo Belle, Neo Zeon and probably Anaheim if she can stand it.

Maybe romance is in her future, but she hasn't seem attracted to anyone, so probably not happening right now.

I'd certainly like it. I don't have a specific end goal for Cybele, but I do have paths I find more appealing than others.

Nobility is definitely something I'd like to explore with Cybele, especially with the whole possibility of it leading to a storyline where cybele has to make up for that one time she interfered with a salvage opperation on Axis.

I'm just as interested in the Ple clones tho, and wouldn't mind shacking up with Zion in general.

Also, I wouldn't mind going down the deep end of Haman Karn headspace and have cybele end up the leader/defender of her own faction based out of a Cascadia 2

I'm not really into Londo Bell, and once Sicilia is done with the psychiatrist and Cybele's mommy issues are resolved one way or another, I'd be happy to leave and get away from the specter of Cybele's Amuro obsession. Seriously the that plus Amuro actually being there Londo Bell is completely ruined for me.

I never want cybele to be on earth. I'm cool with her seeing it and fighting in space around it, but let's keep the spacenoids in space and ground the federation on earth once and for all.

I'm not super into gundam and I've only see part of IBO, so I gotta ask what wrong with londo bell?
Nothing wrong, just not particularly interesting past the initial "wow it's bright! I wonder if cybele is about to get slapped?".

Also, Londo Bell is essentially be the next Amuro, which is fine, except Amuro was a great Amuro already. Like you said, it's boring, because be the next Amuro is gundam's bread and butter because it's how gundam made all it's money in the first place, so it's something they try to work into every protagonist that followed Amuro.

Finally, the "Amuro knows cybele is his fangirl" is getting old fast." unless something happens to completely destroy either Amuro's memories of said hero worship or the hero worship itself, I'm really just not interested in putting up with it in the long haul.

For further comparison I'll go in a bit deeper on my suggestions. For me, the main appeal of quests is, if I'm lucky, I can take the narrative down paths that the creators won't.

I'd rather have Cybele go down the less traveled path of becoming a space Noble and making it work despite the inherent flaws. It's interesting because it sets up the question of whats needed to make space nobility work the way cybele's been convinced it does, and put's it on cybele to find a proper balance and be an example of how to do it right.

With Zeon there is this big mystery of whats going on with the Ple clones. Who else have they been assigned to? Who is there master? What is there goal? Just a lot of threads to pull on and keep things interesting. It's a real rabbit hole and I want to find out what's at the bottom.

The Haman Karn ghost is there, and following in her footsteps is interesting and unprecedented. theirs a whole mess of issues with building a faction from nothing on the mix of ideals cybele has begun to collect, which keeps things interesting. We also get to really dig deep into a sense of defiance where she decides she doesn't want to be Londo Bell or Zion or Even a Space Princess. She wants her home back, and if she has to build it from the ground up herself so be it. Those appeal to me.

Hmm. It's been a while. I'm curious what would have happened if we'd fought alongside Zeon rioters?

Chapter 28: Jupiter's Second Coming-Part 2
"We are not splitting teams." You put your foot down, "Christina, I know it's tempting, but I'm sure you know that we could very well fail our mission if we chase other objectives."

She sighs, "You're right. It was just a thought."

"Alright then, we're holding course." Rosenheim says, "Keep an eye on those Feds. Once they enter weapons range, we might want to start hitting them."

Your group continues on in silence for a few more minutes as you anxiously watch your map of the battlespace. Both you and the Feds are on intercept courses with that Jupitris-class. If this turns into a three-way fight, things will get ugly fast.

"Ishi," You ring up the EWACS, "We in communication range with that Jupitris yet?"

"Negative." She replies promptly, "They'll probably see any flares we send up, though."

Flares, huh? Could be worth a shot. You quickly confer with Rosenheim and Christina and soon you're firing off a handful of flares, their shining combination indicating that you aren't seeking to start hostilities. About a minute after, the Feds do the same.

"…If they think that we aren't going to start shooting once they're in beam range, they've got another thing coming." You growl in irritation. As if that asshole in blue has any right to ask such a thing after what he did to your colony!

A series of flashes from the Jupitris draws your attention, and the Woundwort's OS quickly parses the flare's message.

"This vessel will defend itself if fired upon."

Well, you guess that you would be wary too. After all, the two of you may claim to have peaceful intentions, but you're both coming in with enough firepower to ventilate a colony.

"Feds have entered weapons range." Ishi reports as the data from her sensors steams into your displays, "Force composition is available too."

As previously thought, ten Mobile Suits. Four of them are High Mobility Jegans latched onto Base Jabbers, two to a booster. So, Oldtypes, probably. The others, though…

The Delta Kai in Waverider mode. You're not sure if it's the same pilot as before, but it kinda feels like it is, so they probably survived. Damn.

There are two MP Nus with four Fin Funnels each, all painted in that pale blue common to the Newtype Division. They are each riding a normal ReZEL, which are probably piloted by Oldtypes. There is a third MP Nu, but it has a different backpack… and it's painted a deep ocean blue.

You don't need to ask who that is. You know.

From their position on the back of the Delta Kai, you can feel the Blue Wolf turn in your direction. His presence brushes against yours with hesitant familiarity, and you shove back. He immediately recoils and bristles with apprehension. Yeah, that's right asshole, you know who you're looking at. Time for round three.

Before you can act on the rash impulse to rush him, the beeping of your sensor readout draws your attention.

"Um, guys?" Theo speaks up nervously as a Mobile Suit takes off from the Jupitris and jettisons a small cloud of debris-wait, no. They're actively maneuvering. That isn't debris. The display is quick to correct their designations.

Funnels.

30 of them.

It's a Qubeley MP Type.

"Big Sis!" Sicilia's voice chirps over comms, "I can feel her! She's-!"

"Another of your sisters, right?" You warily eye the Funnels as they begin to orbit both your group and the Feds in unpredictable directions. Shit, well, you're not going to start something now. The Blue Wolf gets a pass for the moment.

More Mobile Suits launch from the ship, and a few begin to herd Alex Team closer to yours. Before long both Alex Team and Cascadia Team are flying tightly together, with the Zeon SpecOps team brining up the rear. This isn't good if things turn south, but they've had plenty opportunity to light you up so far… hopefully that means that you can avoid fighting.

You get a good look at your escorts. The Woundwort can't match them to any existing variants, but you recognize a Nemo under those modifications. They changed the head, added thruster binders to the backpack too. You think those are beam cannons on the tips…

Still, Nemos…

"Cybele!" Eris speaks up suddenly in excitement, "Look at the Mobile Suit standing near the bridge!"

What's got her so worked up? You magnify the area she indicated and… oh my.

Staring directly at your group is the imposing silhouette of a very famous Gundam, one that hasn't been seen since the end of the First Neo Zeon War.

The ZZ Gundam.

Restraints lock down your Mobile Suits in the Jupitris II's hangar, along with the rest of your allies and the Feds as well. You really didn't want to, but the Jupiter Fleet pilots didn't give you a choice. You could have tried to fight your way out, but you would have lost people…

The Lord Frith was too big to fit in the hangar, obviously. Which is where Rhea's absolute batshit refits come in handy. The woman had the original cockpit gutted and replaced with a docking cradle for a Primrose II. Armor plates hide the unit during normal operation, but Sicilia was able to undock and fly into the hangar with just the small Primrose. The larger MA itself is maintaining relative velocity to the Jupitris II, and almost certainly making people onboard it sweat a bit.

You slowly unbuckle from your seat and set the Woundwort to idle… and then it hits you. Everyone is disembarking from their MS. Which means that you're about to see the Blue Wolf himself face to face. That has you about as anxious as meeting these Jupiter Fleet people. Although, if this feeling you're getting from them is right, they're anxious about meeting you too.

In the interest of diplomacy, you probably should leave your sidearm in the cockpit, but… the Feds are probably thinking that too. If you snuck your pistol with you and got a clean shot on the Blue Wolf…

He'd never see it coming.

[] Hide your pistol.

[] Leave your pistol.

QM's Notes: Sorry for the very short update. It kind of stalled due to writer's block. Next update should be longer.

[X] Leave your pistol.

I think it'd be faster to force an airlock and yeet ourselves, our team, Team Alex, the Neo Zeds, the Feds and a few of the Joivens into space. It'd be a far more elaborate suicide.

Besides, we can still beat the shit out of him. Don't need a gun for that.

Concur with the others. I also hope to continue to enjoy Cybele's track record of fucking up the Blue Wolf then never finishing him off.

Also, Nemos? Looked more like a Nero after having mugged a Rick Dias for his pistols.
