A choice? Trying out electives!
[X] Just write the rest, it's been two months damn it.

--------------------------------

"Ok, that'll be enough!" Aida's voice cut through the air, to the relief of the students. A few could be heard falling to the ground, panting and wheezing. "Come see me whenever you get back on your feet. Pupa, Solaya, that means either of you two are first. When she wakes up, tell Tanwen what I said, and add that I'd warned her."

It had been a few days since Lirra and Lucilia had their heart to heart, but aside from a silent walk back to the Academy, they hadn't had the time to see each other. Lirra hoped the bard was alright. When they'd separated, Lucilia had been back to her old self, give or take some redness around her eyes and a head splitting hangover. The second one probably was the usual for her start of the week, however, just like it was for many other students. Still, she couldn't help but worry.

She sat next to the prone body of Tanwen and shook her head. The other Changeling really needed to learn when it was time to stop getting poked with a stick.

"So, thought about what classes you'll pick?" Dylis' voice came from over her shoulder as the redhead came close before sitting at her side. Carwyn followed a few steps behind, a hand in his hair to pull his darker strands out of his face.

"Mh..." Lirra shrugged noncommittally. "I… probably should have thought about it more, but these last weeks have been… busy."

Dylis nodded at that.

"They sure were. Well, I suppose miss Al-Wahid will be able to point you in the right direction. That was the point of today's exercise after all… well, that and she's a psychotic monster who revels in our pain."

At that, they both shuddered at the memory of her latest test.

"I don't think she does, though..." Carwyn cut in with his calm voice. "I mean, she certainly doesn't hold back, but as my father liked to repeat, 'better get hurt now than during an actual battle'... and she doesn't actually hurt us."

"Except if you're Tanwen," pointed the redhead, looking down at the girl on the ground.

"Well, yes, but then again..." He shrugged. "It looks like it's the only way to motivate her to work hard."

They stayed sitting there in silence for a bit as students came and went to Aida, until Dylis turned to Lirra again.

"So..." she started, hesitating. "What's happened between you and Furuta anyway?"

"Dy, I don't think we should-" Carwyn started.

"What, don't you think it's weird? She came here for friends and she can even put up with Tanwen! Whatever happened must have been bad!" she interrupted with large arms movements to illustrate her point.

"And maybe that's a reason why we shouldn't get involved." He turned to Lirra. "You don't need to answer her if you don't want to, you know?"

"Who's Furuta?" Lirra finally asked, though something felt odd about that question.

The couple winced at that.

"That bad, huh?"

"No, really, I don't know who that is," she insisted.

Dylis was about to start asking more questions - likely vehemently if her expression was anything to go by - when Carwyn placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Dy, please."

She grimaced at that, then sighed and eventually shrugged raising her arms high and got up to her feet.

"Fine. Fine! But it's still wrong!" She turned towards the building. "I'll go see Aida next."

And with that she stormed off and Carwyn followed her after a vague apologetic nod to Lirra, who was left alone and very confused.

"No, seriously, who's that?..." she asked dejectedly to the air.

Unsurprisingly, she got no answer.

===

"Ah, Lirra. Take a seat." Aida pointed to the lone chair in front of her desk.

Lirra had eventually gone to see her after relaying her message to Tanwen when she woke up. The teacher's office was a cluttered mess, filled with various trophies and weapons placed to hold down scraps of parchment. The only orderly spot was in a corner where a brass incense bowl was resting on a small carpet, facing an old tapestry depicting what seemed to be a massive verdant snake emerging from the sands.

The chair she sat on, for its part, was unremarkable and actually rather uncomfortable. She shuffled, trying to find a nice position while waiting for Aida to organize her notes.

"So… Let's not waste time. I have a few recommendations as to which classes you should take next month when you can try them. I won't force you to pick anything, but you should be honest with yourself and think about what you can do rather than what you want to do. Let's start by listing what you're good at then we'll get to the rest."

Lirra nodded nervously, hands clenched on her thighs.

"You're pretty fast and agile. With your size, it means it'd be hard to hit you. On the other hand, while you're stronger than it appears, well… you look very weak so it's not saying much. Your reach also isn't great. Since mobility's your greatest advantage, you should probably avoid heavy armor. You being a fae also makes it a bad idea." Aida passed passed Lirra a sheet parchment. "Weapons-wise, you have a bit more choice. Polearms are your best bet, and keeping a ranged weapon on hand is always a good idea." She pointed to the parchment with her one arm. "I've listed a few options there. I'd say a spear is your best option, since it's light and versatile, but my opinion might be biased."

The changeling looked at it and, indeed, cleanly ordered although in a slightly rushed handwriting was a list of various weapons, alongside their pros and cons with regards to her own abilities.

"Now, a few other things. Fae usually have some sort of magic, so it'd be a good idea to go have a look at some of the related classes. We don't have any Fae on staff, but there are lessons to get the most out of innate abilities, so it could be a good option."

Aida leant back on her chair.

"Also, just go take at least the introductory classes on deception. If only to understand it actually is a thing that exists."

At that, Lirra tilted her head in confusion.

"Precisely," was Aida's sole answer.

I say lets build on what we have
And what we have is knowing how to use a shield and a spear
So I would say Commander (I seem ont the only one with this idea)
Also deception was mentioned. If only so Lyra understands that is a thing
[X][Core] Improved Spellblade
[X][Secondary] Deception
[X][Secondary] Lore
[X][Secondary] Innate
[X][Secondary] Magic

My thoughts:
Commander as that support the spear and shield, which is what we already have some knowledge in. I think going for a supportive build is good.
Which is also why I went for tactics and Medicine.
Originally went for Lore but switched it for tactics. We can have a mage to whisper us sweet lore notes.
Innate so we know more about using what changeling stuff and Deception as it was mentioned in the suggestion and Lyra does not really know that is a thingu.
Edit: Convinced by a spoopy tree

Tanwen's "probably a dragon" counter increases by one.

Anyway, I definitely want to get Lirra workington some of her innate stuff as a Changeling. Also you may recall I wanted to take the magic gate back at the trial, so learning a bit to supplement our poor physical stats is a yes. Beyond that, Ettiquette is about making friends, which is the whole reason we're here, so that's a yes. And then I just added in useful side stuff that we night not get from a Pyre

And, of course, took her advice to heart when choosing a primary.

Here's a write in. It aims to take the best of each Core, making us a good leader and healer while maximizing our ability to fight. @Renu what does Command do, exactly? It's not in the shop to my knowledge.

[X][Core] Improved Spellblade
A Spear wielder adept at magic and tactics

It's made to order people around.

It's been long enough that I don't actually quite remember the Furuta thing, beyond that I think we fucked something up?

We did not remember poor Furuta due to the stupid magical ritual memory dive thing.
Put a lie to our friend shipping goal.

Let's take a look at Lirra's existing advantages: The physical track that we picked and the skills it taught us already, being a Keeper and the presumed resultant affinities for death and fire magic, being half-fae and the resultant affinities for nature and for illusion and contract magic, and her ability to grow stronger from Echoes which makes her uniquely suited to generalize by letting her pick up the basics of many different skills without spending a lot of time visiting all the different classes.
And her stated ambitions: To be a knight in shining armor who can protect and inspire others, as well as the desire to be a healer to keep people from dying.

All this suggests something of an all-rounder build, proficient with multiple different weapons and schools of magic equally, wearing light to medium armor as well as a shield to balance protection and movement (there are shield designs that leave the hands free for a spear or bow, such as the roman signifer's parma or the macedon hoplite's pelte), as well as multiple different support skills such as Alchemy (for healing) and Barter (Fae Contracts, and which ones not to make).

To this end, I'd propose to lay the foundations now with a focus on physical combat classes and magic theory, so that we can figure our how to integrate our spells into our combat style once we actually have both. A modified Ranger serves as a useful basis for that.

Short-term modifications to consider might be to replace the bow with either a crossbow or a gun, if we're going to to focus on agility. Proper warbows take a lot of strength. Replacing it purely with ranged attack spells may also be an option, but I'm assuming that magical endurance is going to be a more limiting factor than ammo if we're also going to be throwing around support spells, and also that magically buffed projectile attacks are more energy-efficient than pure attack spells.
Going up to a medium armor is also something we can do whenever, as long as we have the stats and a good enough armor for it not to inhibit us.
Note also that this build has some classes from each echo category, so we can either stack boosts ontop of those skills, or pick up supporting ones without taking the necessary classes.

@Renu, I notice that Deception is not on the list despite being recommended? Is that intentional?

[X][Core] Ranger +

[X][Secondary] Medicine

Alchemy to synergize with medicine and our wilderness affinity. Making our own salves and the like would cut down our expenses, important in the short term.

The last slot I'm undecided on. Options are
[][Secondary] Tactics
[][Secondary] Riding
[][Secondary] Barter
which in the long term seem roughly equally important, though admittedly riding slightly less so.
Tactics to teach Lirra which of the varied skills to use in which situation - long-term she's almost certain to also pick up the command skill, if only because we're a quest protagonist and are going to give commands to others when things heat up by default, but I don't think she has the confidence to purposefully go for a command track yet.
Riding in case we want to work with animals, maybe pick up a permanent companion or two.
Barter, as mentioned, because of Fae Contracts and which ones we shouldn't make.
