It was an exotic looking girl with sharp dark eyes and hair pulled in some sort of ponytail. She seemed nice despite her intensity, what with worrying about Lirra's state despite them not being acquainted with each other.
...Holy shit, did Furuta just get erased from our mind from the initial experimental meditation action?! What kind of trap option is that?! I'm so glad we immediately bailed on that instead of going deeper, and let's never sift among the Ashes again, who knows what else we'll lose.

And once again, a paralyzing array of options that we'll never come close to exploring. May as well follow through on the thing we've spent multiple updates pursuing.

Well okay then, let's not do that again. At least until we figure out this bowl thing... oh. Lirra forgot all the perpetration she did for the meditation. That kinda fucking scary.

I suppose we should just be glad we didn't forget about this.

When she woke up, it was to a balancing movement and some uncomfortable weigh on her belly. She blearily opened her eyes and saw the hallways moving around her and the ground far too low underneath. A thick braid of ginger hair danced in and out of her vision and she could feel a massive hand holding her. It seemed like Alvi had, rather nicely, decided to carry her to classes rather than wake her up.

"You weren't here when the hour was early at the mess, and now you come like so." A voice came from her right. "Are you fine?"

... we are NEVER doing that again.
We barely scratched the surface, yet we already completely forgot Furuta. If we dive deeper we might end up erasing half our memories.

"All right, everyone out and to the third training area." It was there that Lirra realized with horror that she'd heard her. "Time for some survival training."
Shouldn't a changeling be really good at survival training? Beloved by nature and all that? Or did we also forget we're a changeling? :p

The cup remained on the windowsill, still marked with traces of cinders and soot, its origin unexplained.
Well, we spontaneously created a cup and some ashes. I'm not particularly interested in this, unless we can investigate it with someone else. And even then, we have better stuff to do. Like hanging out with Chloe.

@Renu, question: this next update will be Saturday, right? And if we take the job from Melissa we'll work on Saturday we'll work on Saturday and have Sunday for something else (like talking to Chloe)? Also, we'll still be training barter while working?

So, assuming that we will have Sunday to talk to Chloe about magic, and that we'll train barter while working, here's my thoughts on the currently competing votes:
Working with Melissa is a means to an end (other than maybe becoming friends with Melissa). We train Barter (presumably), and get money. These are not what we want overall, but they do open up nice options for us. Options like getting a healers kit, buying weapons and armor from Melkorka, and buying ingredients and scrolls for magic. It has a very high opportunity cost, but will probably be worth it in the long run.

Looking further into Gravediggers is an end in itself. Some people here want to learn more about Keepers, and this will do that. It might even eventually let us get more echoes out of pyring bodies. This would have been a good investment if we could have finished it in one day, but if we take multiple updates to do it, we might as well just pyre bodies.
Part of what I don't like about this option is that we can't hang out with anyone else while doing it. Ideally, we should try to choose options that both give us more power (which this might? Maybe?) and let us hang out with a friend (which this doesn't) at the same time. Good examples of are training with Furuta (before we lost our memories), pyring bodies with Tanwen (might still be an option, if we do a write in?), and asking Chloe about magic (which is the single best option we can take. Chloe is awesome, and much more likely to open up when she's talking about magic, especially if she uses that telepathy spell to talk. Plus we'd potentially be greatly increasing our power by learning spells that can buff us).

Too many options, not a lot of choice.

Nah. We are going to a library, looking for mentors, and researching how do you do introspection without your mind falling apart. Then we are definitely doing it again.

We just had a suspicion that taking in more Echoes could mean losing one's self just the same. Are we 'never doing that again' too, even though it's a premise of our power?

Probably the wrong kind of survival. Alas, there are not enough Al-Wahids in the wilds for nature to prepare one for them.

What's the deal with Melissa, again? Didn't we take the job? Are we choosing to show up/not show up every weekend now?

Nothing can prepare you against an AL-Wahid.

And for the job, you did a trial then she told you to come back to decide the details (which day you work, etc.) next week-end (this one).

The difference as I see it is that echoes definitely give us power. We have never not gotten power of some sort for pyring bodies, and it's never taken more than a single day. We know that it's fully possible to completely waste time with this, while it seems much less likely that we would pyre bodies without getting anything from it. Time is a valuable resource for us. Every 1/3 week that we spend doing something that doesn't give us benefits is an update which we could have spent getting more powerful, hanging out with our friends, or (better yet) both. The reason I voted for meditation is that I was hoping we could get a large benefit in one update. Otherwise, I would have argued harder for something that both gives us more power and lets us hang out with someone. Right now, the past seems like it would take a long time to bring any benefits, and we can't hang out friends during it because it would probably tip people off that we're a Gravedigger (and Tanwen doesn't exactly strike me as the type of person to be interested in sitting around reading or meditating). If we eventually tell Chloe about our Gravedigger status, then we could hang out with her while looking through the library, but that will take a while. Maybe if we just don't tell her what we're looking for?
We should probably also get a lot more reading proficiency/experience before we try to look through the library, unless we want Chloe to read everything for us. We're barely literate, and these will be big history books that might also be written with old accents and faded handwriting. Possibly even other languages if we're really unlucky.

We're working on whatever day we go as well, right?

The cup is clearly an important clue, I'd like to look into it. It might give us better information than the general background without any real secrets we're likely to find in the library, although that's a backup plan.
[X] Find the origin of that cup.

In the medium term we should ask Chloe about whether there's mind magic that can keep us from forgetting things, once we realize just how badly that dive affected us. Maybe it'd be possible to protect ourselves from the backlash somehow by getting spells cast on us beforehand.

I like this idea. For Sunday, I want us to talk to Chloe about magic, so maybe we can slip Mind Magic in there as something to ask about?

Agreed. I'd actually be in favor of telling her everything, if she agrees to keep the secret between us. She'll be able to help a whole lot more if she knows exactly what she's dealing with and we don't have to carefully censor all our answers to her questions. Maybe she could also help us identify the mysterious cup and go digging in the library for further information, if it comes to that.

Also we should probably mention that promise we made to save her life at some point. She's not obligated to help us repay the debt of course, but I imagine she'd want to.

I think telling her about us being a Gravedigger is a bit premature for now, unfortunately. However, we'll be needing to hang out with her a lot in order to learn more about the different types of magic, so hopefully we'll be getting to know her well enough for that soon. I think that getting her help with the bowl could be a good idea, if we want to keep digging into our past. It could be a sort of lead up to telling her about us being a Keeper. If we really want to dig deeper, Chloe is probably the best person to get help from for that.

I'm not sure about the debt. I think she already knows about us saving her life, but I'm not sure what effect telling her about the debt would have.

Soooo, does anyone have any ideas about what to do about the Furuta situation? I'd like to become friends with her again, since she's awesome (and we can hang out with her while training).
We could ask Tanwen who that nice girl who talked to us before class was?
