[X] You'll be ok as long as you can patch yourself up, so if someone has a first aid kit, it'd be great
-------------------------
Lirra wanted to shake her head, but thought better just in time and simply raised a palm to decline.
"No, I… should be alright as long as I can heal myself," she said. "Does anyone have salves or bandages?"
"Here. Don't take too long," answered the severe voice as a pouch was put on Lirra's desk. "And don't waste any of it."
Lirra quickly started looking inside, and found a series of high quality remedies as well as bandages, all neatly ordered to take as little place as possible. She put aside a few shining vials that made her feel like she owed money to someone by simply looking at them, and finally found what she was looking for: a Frostsalve. She didn't know what it was made from, but had somehow learned how and when to apply it. She took the small piece of soft wood that was attached to the bottom of the pot - it was a bad idea to apply this salve by hand for some reason - and started spreading it on the swelling on her forehead. It felt like dumping her head in frozen water, but after the initial shock, the dull throbbing that had been persisting since the impact started to fade, and the cold that had initially felt almost painful became soothing. She then bandaged it so the air wouldn't dry it out before it could act fully.
Her head cleared up a bit and she put what she hadn't used as neatly as she could back into the pouch. A bronze skinned hand quickly grabbed it and she followed it to an older, one-armed woman.
"Now that you're back with us, tell who you are, your main skills and why you came here." She was the one with the severe voice. "The rest of them already did; you'll have to catch them later if you want to know."
Lirra looked around in a panic. The request was sudden and she, as usual, wasn't the most eloquent of people. The look in the woman's eyes, however, made her not waste any time in indecision.
"Ah! I- I'm Lirra. I'm good in the nature and, uh… can use a spear a bit," she answered quickly, her words - even the meaningless sounds she made hesitating - running over each other in their rush to get out. The technical part was what came next. She wanted to say she came here to protect the innocents and be a knight, but… "I came here to… um..."
The woman raised an eyebrow and her fingers started tapping on her belt as Lirra hesitated. With an "eep" she quickly continued.
"I came here because I wanted friends!" she finally blurted loudly.
A few laughs came from the other aspirants, but were silenced quickly when the woman started speaking.
"Well, it's a good thing I don't care about any of your motivations," she said coldly. "My job here's to make sure you can be of some use and don't die stupidly when you get out there, or worse, make your team die uselessly while you survive."
She paced a bit in front of her audience.
"My name's Aida Al-Wahid. Given this year's batch has a surprising number of women, I hope I won't have to beat as many idiots with their own broken limbs until you rid yourselves of stupid notions about who should or shouldn't be a warrior. Let me put it plainly anyway: strong is strong, weak is dead. Gender has nothing to do with it, and the first who forgets that and starts having stupid ideas like 'let's not listen to Aida'... well, what I said earlier was neither an image nor an exaggeration." A thin humorless smile appears on her lips. "Now that it's out of the way, let's get started on how things are going to happen this year."
She finally stopped walking around and leant back on her desk.
"The first month or so, you'll have plenty of different lessons, so you - and we - can see what you're good at. Given the sheer quantity of them, you won't try all the possible ones, only those that are judged useful for Swords. During what's left of the second month, you'll keep trying different things, or coming back to classes you have an affinity for. The choice between specialisation and diversification is yours to make, but you'll be able to take any elective at that point, not only the stereotypical Sword ones, so look around.
If you have no idea what you're doing or are hesitating, come to me, it's my job to guide you. Or you can go to another master if you don't like me. It'll annoy them and give me less work, so that's good too.
After that, you'll have to finally make your choice. There are a minimum number of Sword classes - the vocation, not the weapon, though it's an option - you'll have to take, but you're free to do whatever you want with the rest. As I just said, Sword is a vocation, an aspiration, not a specific skillset, so if you want to kill monsters with a fireball, go ahead, that'll surprise them. Want to stab them in the back? Less chance of being hurt that way."
Lirra's eyes narrowed at Aida's most unchivalric suggestions, but she didn't dare make a remark. She also didn't want to miss a detail about how the Academy gave its lessons; it was important, obviously.
"This Academy places a lot of importance in freedom in what its students learn. It tries to emulate the way adventurers and heroes came to be in the past, and most of them didn't have a speck of formal training. Of course, it does so in a safer way, or rather one with less consequences should you fail and die. For that reason, there won't be any actual tests or whatever any of you who come from Maath could expect. Just… expect a surprise sometime after the second month. Merek'Norr makes sure you get the full adventurer experience within its walls," she once again smiled humorlessly.
"Other than that, it'll be the time when you'll be able to get some quests and finally start working with the other vocations. It won't be anything much at first - you won't get any actual requests until the very end of the year and that'll just be some minor mission. We have no qualms about sending you into danger - it's why you came - but we won't willingly send you to your death."
And on that joyful note, she continued on to explain various rules to follow - basic stuff that was basically illegal anywhere - and finished by saying to meet her in the field the field outside the classroom in one hour.
"Don't eat too much. It'd be a shame to throw it all up."
And on that ominous conclusion, they were free to go to the mess for a meal. The other aspirants left the room, some alone, others in pairs or larger groups. Apparently, some of them knew each other before coming here. That, or they simply were much more social than her, glumly commented Lirra in the privacy of her mind.
Head hanging low after her less than perfect first morning here, she followed them. She usually didn't eat three times a day - while the energy was useful on the road, she didn't have enough food for it - but she wasn't about to refuse an offered meal, especially since she had no doubt that the afternoon would demand a lot of energy.
As she walked, she looked around to see her classmates; after all, she didn't really had the occasion when she came in this morning, and she hadn't dared look away from the instructor once she started talking. She located the two she ran into - quite literally for one of them - this morning. It would have been hard not to. The man had seemed decent, even though his reflexes had almost knocked her out, but the girl hadn't sounded all that nice. She also saw the same few she had noticed the previous day: the Elf, who didn't look interested in any of those around her, the stern Svartalf, the sun knight and another giant of a man - they weren't side to side so she couldn't be sure, but she was almost sure that were he standing straighter, he would be taller than the one she ran into by a good margin - whose limbs weren't organic but looked like those of a golem.
Aida hadn't been wrong when she had commented that there were a lot of girls in this year. As for each man she could see, she could almost make out two women. Of course, given the fact that she was quite short and at the back of the file, it probably wasn't an accurate count, but still. In the stories, knights saved maidens. Would female knights save fair maidens too, or would they find gallant men?
There were both options in her class, she noticed. Although most of her male classmates would be better described as burly, a few of them broke the mold. One such pretty boy walked alongside Dylis, who was apparently annoyed at something he did, and another was alone and walked with his head raised high. Finally, there was another who was following an exotic looking girl, but her eyes had trouble staying on him or actually describing him. He was… probably average looking? Or something? He looked… nice, she guessed. She felt her head ache again as she tried to ascertain anything specific about him, and finally abandoned.
By then, they had reached the mess and most took the closest table to the door they came from. The large room had apparently built so that students could simply walk in from their classes and they would find a free table. This resulted in a surprisingly orderly arrangement, with different vocations neatly separated. At least, it was true for the first years, as older students apparently were more mixed, until it was all but impossible to assign the last years, as few as they were, to different groups. Of course, it didn't mean she had to eat with her class. This organisation resulted from smart architecture, not an enforced rule.
She should try to get along with her classmates, but she could also try to find people she already knew. That'd be easier and she could always try to talk to new people tomorrow or this evening, when she hadn't just passed a pretty bad morning.
-------------------------
[] At least Tanwen is a mostly known quantity, so...
[] You've obviously already met the one you ran into this morning. He seemed maybe somewhat decent?
[] You already talked to Dylis so it'll be easier sitting next to her than someone else.
[] That elf is sitting away from everyone. It'll be calm around her.
[] Go to the sun knight, he's… well, a knight, so that's a plus.
[] How does that knight eat with his helmet still on!? Well, knights are supposed to be nice, so...
[] You're curious about the half golem man.
[] One of the girls look like Chloe, if she were sharper. Chloe is nice, so maybe her too?
[] One of the girls is smiling and looks curiously at the other aspirants. That means she'll be happy if you sit next to her, right?
[] Go find Chloe. She's a good listener.
[] Go find Lucilia. She'll know how to make friends.
[] Go find Melkorka. You'll have a clear assessment of what you did wrong.
[] Go find that nice older student. She did say to go to her if you needed anything.
[] Take some food and eat outside, where there isn't such a big crowd. Trees are nice.
[] Write-in?
Once again, Avalanche beta'd. Honor Avalanche's sacrifice.
