I don't like swords. I do like spears. Saying it's thematic is a bit strange since spears are used by warriors as well. We're also about the furthest thing from a noble so choosing because it's a status symbol is just weird.

Is my opinion.
Edit: Chivalry doesn't care about what weapon you use, only the reason you're using it for.
You're approaching this from the wrong angle. Chivalry as a concept emerged with Knighthood, and the image of a Knight is intrinsically twined with the Sword, Lance, Horse, and his Shining Armor. That's the image we're trying to provoke here. Any bloke with a week or two of training can hold a spear and fight, that's why it was so prevalent in history. A sword, meanwhile, is a symbol of Chivalry and is reserved for Officers and people of import.

A warrior can use any weapon be it sword or spear, but won't be linked to the image of Chivalry. A person who wields a sword meanwhile and follows the code of Chivalry, will.

Appearances matter if we want to get out of the shadow of our social stigma.
Spears are kings of war and battle. They and bows were guns before guns became a thing. The most easy and effective weapon to utilize. Minimum of fancy shit, just stab away! Everyone can do that.
Also, we need to remember to upgrade intelligence sometime later. In a contest where everything else is even, smartest fighter wins every time. Especially with something as versatile as a spear.
It's the fact thst anyone can do it is what separates it from the image of Chivalry. Those who follow the code of our theme are supposed to be exceptional, not the norm.

Excalibur, Caliburn, Durandal, Caladbog, Gram, Masamune... And that's just the ones from myths and legend.
Well, you can't really call swords vs spears a fair comparison when you have access to multiple types of swords while we're limited to one type of polearm. But there's also:
Gáe Assail, Rhongomyniad and the Three Great Spears of Japan: Tonbokiri, Nihongo and Otegine

Another thing to note: Knights actually used swords as secondary weapons. Swords were the knightly equivalent of handguns. The main weapon for a knight was either a spear or poleaxe. The sword wielding knight stereotype likely developed because they were used in tournaments.
Same for the stereotypical image of a lance, those were made for jousting tournaments to break and not kill the other guy; a lance for battle looks a lot more like a spear.

The thing is, we're not a knight, and as much as we might look up to the stereotypical image of one, trying to pretend to be one as we are now would just look ridiculous. It's not like we have armor, we don't have a steed, and we definitely aren't a noble. And there's no need to wipe away our "Social Stigma", because people come to the Academy from all walks of life as equals, the only person who knows about our real stigma is our accepting roommate, and no play acting at knighthood will affect how people see Gravediggers.

Also I don't think the large proportion of our warrior classmates who use weapons other than swords would appreciate this viewpoint, the name of the class not withstanding.

What we're picking here isn't locking us into a particular weapon type for the rest of the Quest, we're just trying to give ourselves enough skills so we don't embarrass ourselves by stabbing ourselves in the foot on our first day of training. And in that sense, the fact that "Anybloke with a week or two of training can hold a spear and fight," is an advantage, because it means we can quickly pick it up and become combat relevant, especially since we just got some real battle experience with it.

[X] You can totally do both if you hurry a bit.

[X][shop] Plan: General Improvement

I do not give a fuck if swords would be "more knightly" or what have you. Spears are amazing.

Which would be true, if we were in fact having to train up to real proficiency. We're not. We're changeling the fighting skills of dead trainees who didn't make the cut. We can pick up the sword skills and be useful with it just as fast as the spear. And frankly, that battle was embarrassing.

That's a disappointing statement on every level. No sense of style.

Swords can be cool, sure. Swords can even be awesome.

But claiming that Swords is the absolute best and that Spear is totally lame and disappointing just makes you look like a sword fanboy.

Fanboy-ism is never a valid argument.

Inserted tally

So, both and... general improvement, I think? won. (can someone confirm, given I've been known to be wrong about this)

-----------------------

Lirra stood still for a moment, before reluctantly putting the clothes back on the table. If she wanted to be able to do anything during that important first day, she'd have to eat, but still… maybe if she hurried a bit - or rather if she hurried a lot - she could both clean herself and grab something to eat? She clenched her fist in front of her, determination burning in her eyes. She could totally do both!

"I have to go now!" she announced, before running out of the room, her cape flaring behind her.

Of course, if she hadn't been so panicked and willing to do everything at once, she'd have realized earlier that she had no idea where anything was. Well, she knew where the mess was, that had been covered in the small tour the previous day, as it was outside of the building; a place where all aspirants could meet rather than a generally segregated one like the dorms. Still, that knowledge did little to guide her to somewhere she could clean.

Of course, her first idea had been to find a stream or something like that - she was pretty sure that one passed through the academy at some place - but now that most of the student body was up, she was somewhat reluctant. She'd have to get used to living around other people. While it sounded nice, there certainly were some habits she'd need to change unless she wanted to be embarrassed. As she paced hurriedly through the hallways, her eyes finally fell on a plaque on the wall. These were… indications? Apparently, the baths were that way, and the indications for several other rooms also were clearly inscribed on it. Useful.

Lirra decided to ignore the fact that she was certain she had passed by it earlier this morning and had had no idea what the strange symbols upon it meant, but she wasn't about to complain. She started running again, faster now that she knew where to go, and finally arrived in front of two large doors after a few minutes. Upon them were respectively engraved a man and a woman, in a simple and minimalist style. Well, she didn't need to be a genius to understand what that meant - she tried really hard not to think about what if she were wrong - and pushed the door marked with the woman.

Beyond it was a small room, filled with wooden lockers. Near the door was what probably once was a neat pile of towels, but had long since been ravaged by a horde of barely awake future heroes. Lirra picked one that looked untouched, then, after nervously tugging on the hem of her hood, a second one.

The lockers were mostly empty, but it looked like at least one person was still there; she'd need a way to hide her hair. She peeped further in, to be sure no one would come while she was revealed, then quickly slid out of her clothes. The patched and dirt covered tunic and pants fell to the ground, followed shortly by some thinner cloth in a thankfully better state after Lirra checked once more that no one was coming. Covered only by her cape, she wrapped herself in her first towel, so that both her hands would be free for the next step. Looking around her one last time, she took a breath, then quickly pulled her hood down. She took the second towel and started covering her hair with it, spinning it around until it finally felt like it'd hold. As the towel was intended to cover a body - and apparently the academy had decided to cover their bases and plan for huge bodies, given it was the Sword dormitory - it was pretty awkward. Add to that her horns and the speed at which she had done it, panicked as she was, and Lirra ended up with some strange, heavy abomination hanging awkwardly over her head.

Thus prepared, she put her discarded clothes in an empty locker, then slowly made her way further in, one hand raised to balance her makeshift turban. As she entered the second room, she could see only one other occupant, a rust-haired girl, who jumped at her arrival, covering her body with her hands while shouting.

"Hey, why did you come he-" she started loudly, before stopping. "Ah, you're someone else."

At that, she seemed to relax a bit and sank back into her bath.

"Didn't think anyone else would be here this late," she commented. "I certainly wouldn't if that idiot had woken up on time..."

Unsure of what she was talking about, Lirra nodded before making her way to the side, where an artificial stream of water ran. Given most of the room was taken by an impressive stone bath where the other girl was currently relaxing, she supposed that she was supposed to clean herself at least a bit so as to not dirty the calm water of the main bath.

"Still, we made it, uh?" the other girl said, starting to talk excitedly now that she had processed that the newcomer wasn't 'that idiot'. "This is going to be great! Becoming heroes in the best place in the world for it. People from all over the world came, and people from all over the world will want to be us!"

Once more, Lirra nodded shyly. The other girl seemed friendly, and on any other occasion, she'd have tried her best to interact with her given she came here to make friends in the first place, but… well, she was naked and had to try her best to balance the monstrosity on her head while cleaning herself. That took some concentration.

"So..." the other girl seemed to hesitate for a bit, given Lirra's lack of response. "How's Endercross? I heard it's pretty great. Got in any adventures in the city before coming here?"

"Uh… Endercross? Ah, I never went there," Lirra answered panickedly. "Uh, why did you ask that?"

"Aren't they the only ones who wear turbans? Well, it's true that you're a bit… well, a lot, too pale now that I think about it. So… why do you wear that, then?"

As she had finished cleaning herself, Lirra started walking towards the bath, her towel in front of her.

"Ah, to cover my hair."

The red haired girl narrowed her eyes at that.

"Well, obviously, but why?" she asked again.

"I… don't want people to see it?" Lirra answered, hoping that she wouldn't push further as she could only go so far without lying.

"Fair enough," the girl finally said after a sigh. "Well, I'll leave you to it, then. You should hurry too, classes should begin soon."

And with that, she got up and out of the water. Lirra hurriedly averted her eyes until a towel covered what needed to be covered.

"By the way, what's your name?"

"Ah… Lirra."

A "Dylis," came from the locker room and then Lirra was left alone.

She waited a bit, then removed her makeshift turban. Her ashen hair fell down to her shoulder and the tips danced in the water. Keeper of Gray hair was strange. Most of the time, it looked like a mix of regular hair and ashes, but as soon as it fell in water, it behaved as if it were regular hair - at least, she wouldn't have to clean the bath, as an infinite reserve of ash dirtying the water would be quite bad - only to once more being covered in it as soon as it got out. Lirra shrugged and dunked her head underwater, passing her hands through her hair quickly before coming back out for a breath. At least, she thought, they weren't hard to care for.

As much as she wanted to keep on soaking in the deliciously warm water, she didn't have the time and so she got out and hurriedly dried herself, before putting her clothes back on - she should have thought about that and carried the new set with her too - and ran back to her room to get changed again.

She ran her hands through the clean, brand new clothes then shook her head and quickly got changed. Once she managed to pass her horns through the collar of the top, she was surprised to see that it was a perfect fit. She was used to somewhat baggy clothes, as most humans were larger than changelings and that she herself was a bit too thin even by their standards, but the uniform had apparently been made to her exact measurements. She adjusted her belt, who looked like they were waiting for several sheathes to be attached to them, and placed the sword emblem over her heart with pride. She waved her arms around for a bit to be sure her movements weren't hindered and then picked her cloak back from the floor. Finally fastening it around her neck, she raised her hood again and smiled, ready to take on the world.

At that moment, her stomach rumbled.

Well, ready to take breakfast, at least.

Speaking of which, she needed to hurry.

She arrived to the mess as most people were leaving. It looked like some sort of buffet, apparently, and she wolfed down whatever she found that was close enough to her, before grabbing a final slice of some sort of thin bread and running to class with it in her mouth.

"I'm late I'm late I'm late," chanted some part of her mind, but she tried her best not to listen to it. She was… well, certainly not early, but she was pretty sure she'd be here on time, as long as she didn't slow down on the way.

She only was one corner away from the classroom when she hit... a wall? She was pretty sure that walls weren't supposed to walk through the hallways, especially in corners. That'd be unfair. And dangerous. Still confused, she was picked by the neck from the floor, and raised back to her feet, where she was still held as her legs were still wobbly.

"So… hey, sis, do you know where the sneaky or magicky dudes go?" a voice bellowed. "I think I broke one… maybe I should rather find the healers first?"

Lirra blinked and when her vision cleared, she saw a massive face in front of her - wait, no, she was just close. She looked down and saw that her feet were pretty far off the ground and her legs started pedaling in panic. She was put down at that point.

"Here you go," the man - wait, no, giant, he had to be at least twice her size! - said. "You should be careful running around like that, you're too squishy to do it safely!"

And with that he let out a loud laugh, before calming down and saying again, more softly.

"No, but seriously, are you ok? I… may have put an elbow out reflexively." Even like that, the voice was overbearing.

That… explained things. Among others, why her forehead hurt so much and why her vision was still swimming.

"Move your ass, you're going to be late!" came another voice further in the hallway.

"Just a sec! I might have broken some mini-person," he hollered back. "I should at least try to dump her in her class instead of just leaving her here..."

"Look at her damn breast, she's a Sword, so you can carry her if you want, but get in here before you ruin your first day!"

The giant's eyes went down, then up, and he shrugged.

"Well, you can't blame me for missing it, it's not like there's much to see," he muttered to himself.

Lirra was then unceremoniously grabbed like a potato sack and entered her first class in the glorious academy of Merek'Norr under the arm of some giant of a man who concussed her.

Yay. Go, Lirra. Way to start things up…

She was put down on a chair, until a severe voice that half heartedly tried to sound nice asked her if she wanted to go to a healer before coming back.

[] Might be a good idea
[] You'll be ok as long as you can patch yourself up, so if someone has a first aid kit, it'd be great
[] Nah, you'll be fine
[] Write-in?

And so you've met the archetypical tsundere! I must say, it's quite strange to write someone who you pretty much only characterised as "tsundere" without her crush around.

By that, I'm not saying you should seduce Dylis, just that it'd make things easier for me.

As usual, beta'd by Avalanche. Thanks!

EDIT: Woopsie, apparently it wasn't finished yet. Expect a few tweaks here and there.

Dylis didn't seem very tsundere-like to me? Maybe if we had focused on the cleaning and had more time to interact with her, but she acted generally friendly IMO.

And then Lirra spent the next few months looking for suitable echoes to fix this.
While this is a joke, you can't actually change your body through echoes; it's only mental. The increased stats are subconscious optimisations "100% of your brain muscles" (and maybe a few other things, but you'll need to find some dead fae to know that and unlock the higher tiers).

inb4 "100% of your chest"

I just figured that the stats were "it's magic, I ain't gotta explain shit", whether or not they apply to other people as well, and that the Echoes just metaphysically empower Lirra without actually changing her body.
