What I find interesting is what Mari said at the end of the preview.
"No matter where you are, I'll search for you, just wait Little Puppy (Shinji)."
What's her endgame here?

What I find interesting is that

that line implies WILLE don't know where Shinji is. After all, if they did, Mari wouldn't need to 'search' for him, she would just go to wherever he is... which, knowing WILLE, would probably be the cell they've thrown him in to make sure he doesn't go for the Apocalypse Trifecta.

But why doesn't Mari or WILLE know where Shinji is? I admit, I'm mostly working off of SFDerbis' recap of 3.0 right now - I've been busy! - but Asuka and Mari were both present when Shinji and Kawrou removed the lances. Asuka was the one who dragged him out of the EVA after all.

So... what gives? Given the state Shinji was in at the end of 3.0, I can't imagine him managing to escape from Asuka and Mari after the credits role. My first thought was that maybe Asuka and Rei have gone AWOL with Shinji, but that doesn't seem like a natural progression from the previous film.

Unless it's meant as more of a metaphorical statement, and Shinji really is virtually comatose, in which case Mari is declaring that she's going to try and bring him back to reality? Though a statement like that feels like it would have more weight from Misato, Asuka or Rei rather than the movie-only character.

And thus, as usual, I am left staring at Evangelion not know what is going on. The more things change. :V

Didn't
Misato abort the mission and extract with Mari on the Wunder? I believe it's only Asuka and Rei Q with Shinji, as Asuka said something about finding back, IIRC.

Sorry, it's been a long time and I've only seen it once.

"Gaki Shinji," is all I really remember. :p

Hmm. Yeah, looking over the summary again on Evageeks, it does seem like it was just Asuka there, and she also mentions that they can't get rescued where they are.

Sooo, I guess Mari's line makes more sense? My bad. In case it hasn't been made clear already, I'm quite an idiot.

I watched the first four episodes with a group of friends most of them knew very little about it and the way they immediatly hated Gendo's from the first episode was pretty hillarious

This is reassuring. If they didn't, you might wish to carefully re-evaluate their place in your social circle :)

I used to see a lot of folks who said Gendo was awesome and it was a shame his son was such a pussy.

This was long before I watched Eva or knew really anything about it.

EDIT:
I still like my What-If where you replace Shinji with Light. Somebody on SB said "finally, a son Gendo can be proud of."

Seriously though I think it be an interesting dynamic.

But... Gendo doesn't hate Shinji? That is an incredibly important and obvious bit of information he gives in EOE right before he dies. He is standoffish to his son because he can't bring himself to properly emotionally connect with him. Hes terrified he will hurt him so he just cuts him off entirely.

I don't think he would even like someone like Light as a son, he would remind Gendo far too much of his own failings of the person he was (and still largely is) before he met Yui.

I'm aware, I jus remember these comments because they are good snapshots of how some people view the series.

It's all very ironic because Gendo and Shinji are a lot alike. Hence why I always remember how people likd Gendo and hated Shinji. The main difference between them is how they present their failings.

I don't like Gendo or Shinji much anyway. My favorites were Kaji, Kaworu and Rei. I'm surprised more people don't like Kaji. He has that cool, unflappable exterior that Gendo has but with none of Gendo's cruelty. The scene where he calmly waters his garden as death and destruction occur all around him and then convinces Shinji to go back is one of the best moments in the anime.

Didn't notice until I had it pointed out to me, but that looks like Unit 01's eye

This is true, but at the same time Shinji is also treated by Gendo the same way he treats everyone else: 100% willing to completely disregard him when he's doing anything that helps Gendo get further on the path to Yui. Remember his little smile while the Dummy Plug tore Unit-03 limb from limb, while Shinji screamed and pleaded for him to stop the whole time.

This doesn't make what you said untrue, though. It just illustrates a possible reason why Gendo was afraid he'd hurt Shinji: doing exactly that. He knew he was a monster and would do monstrous things, and so tried to keep Shinji out of the blast radius.

I was wondering the other day....do the eva unit control handle do anything? I'm pretty sure the button does, but part of me think the moving part don't actually do anything since the eva synch up with their pilot on a mental level and well they can only move up and down

If they have real functions, it's very contextual and highly moderated by software like the scroll wheel on a mouse

I thought it was super obvious: they're the giant robot Jesus Bar. The alternative is leaving the pilots with nothing to hold on to, which is awkward if they get too into things and start making motions themselves. (Mari)

I imagine you'd need a very high sync ration to just control the Eva by thought or personal movement. And since a high sync ratio is a bad thing, the controls are probably there for control under normal circumstances. Like all the other buttons and switches.

There's some force feedback - you have to push them forward to make the Eva push something, for example

May also be tied to making the Eva move, like gas pedals, while the sync business is the steering wheel - the better the sync, the better you move

I always assumed they were something kind of like Dumbo's feather.
Not quite; they do something, as they have buttons and the like. If they were like the feathers, their mere existence would suffice.

Personally, I always assumed that the buttons are for advanced interface and analysis tech, though.

Not that a virtual keyboard via HUD wouldn't make more sense....

It actually wouldn't though, because a virtual HUD keyboard or any other HUD interactive tool would require the Pilot to let go of the controls to operate, which is not a good idea in the middle of combat if we assume that the handles have even a minimal role in controlling the EVA. It's the same reasoning why modern fighter jets use the HOTAS configuration (Hands On Throttle And Stick), which have as many of the critical controls as possible crammed into the positions where the hands are so that they might be accessible during combat manoeuvres without any unnecessary movement.

Yes; though I was talking more about system analysis, which normally wouldn't be done in a combat situation, and would require more specific input.

Sure, tactical analysis tools and such should be controlled were the hands already are, but anything fancier....

A helmet, somewhat similar in function to that of a fighter pilot's, of some variety would probably help as well. Not just for "advanced built in HUD" which can compliment the Evangelion's impressive vision, but also something to cushion the head as you're being thrown around. Seriously, the fact that Eva pilots didn't get concussion due to whacking their heads against the backs of their seats is a miracle.

Controversial point now; given the above, a sort of armour would probably help more than a plug suit.

I don't disagree with that, but apparently the skin needs to be in contact with the LCL or a plugsuit in direct contact. Which shouldn't rule out some sort of padding made out of the same materials as the plugsuit, which is what they would actually want.

A helmet might actually give more space for a bigger, better version of the A-10s, too.

If I recall, the purpose of the Plug Suit is to cut down on interference between the Pilot and their Evangelion. Actually, that's what the Wiki says! So if that's their point, then more padding or actual armour of some variety fulfills this role and adds far superior protection. Who knows, a proper suit of armour might have allowed Toji to keep one or two more of his limbs!

Hell, a helmet could negate the need for A-10s entirely. If cat ear neural hair clips can amplify control over an Evangelion, then surely a helmet can do that too? And do a shit ton more, come to think of it.
